Soviet fell because of economical problems. They wasted all their money on nukes, military and weapons, instead of supporting the country. Lack of food, among other things made it impossible to continue the direction they were at.

With no leader, there would be many different political powers competing with each other for ultimate power, as Stalin wouldn't have thought about what would happen when he is gone. The people would be split, either taking sides or not. Those who did not take sides would be forced to. Everything would be a disaster. However, Stalin as leader would probably be worse.

I wouldn't go THAT far...
He WAS smart enough to side with the Allies after Hitler backstabbed him.
Stalin was a paranoid leader that killed off entire towns to preserve his leadership, but no leader would eventually rot Russia into oblivion.

I used to have some neighbors who were Russian. The mother would get excited when she was talking, and suddenly she would start talking in Russian, or whatever the proper name for their language is. We would just smile and nod like we could understand.
