Gameplay-wise I would probably go with squirtle as it is more my style, it has high defense and has some decent water moves...
In real life (if it was real), I would pick charmander because it eventually turns into charizard which I could train to fly me places.

I choose Charmander, he is so awesome looking, amazing Pokemon, and it's last evolution is Charzard, which is also amazing.
