I agree with Jerry on Photoshop. I use the CS5 and it's outstanding! I love it.

Photoshop, GIMP and MS Paint are your friends.

Mr Pokemon:
I've used GIMP some. It is a nice program, but takes some getting used to after using MS paint for a while. However, Paint works well for pixel art.

Ok if you want a pixel art program I can help. This is a program designed with pixel artists in mind.
