By TYPE, maybe not, But its design is very clearly based off a chinese dragon, as well as the fact it learns mostly dragon type moves. It also has the same crazy-ass stats of a dragon type, and even happens to be one of the pokemon of Lance, the Dragon-type member of the elite four.
So... in a way... Garydos is more like a dragon than most dragon types. Especially Flygon and Kingdra.

My personal favorites are Flygon, Kingdra, and Dragonite.
If you play Flygon right, he can really help your overall party.
Dragonite has great Defense, has Superpower AND Extremespeed (one of my favorite moves)
And Kingdra is just bloody SCARY. I get terrified whenever someone throws him, so he definitely makes my favorite list.

I really hate Garchomp. He's just ugly, but I do like salamence. Although, both still should remain banned in the b/w metagame.

Either the new pure dragon one (can never remember his name), or Sazoranda (It think that's his name. not sure.) they are sweet!!!!
