Sorry, it must be 48x48, because otherwise it won't fit into the resolution. You simply need to add more details for it to look better.

 lol, I laugh every time I see it. I suck at making sprites, so about halfway through I decided I would make it look like that, just because I was bored. At the end I laughed, and then entered it.
