There is a lot of fan art out there that is better. Just look at Spirit's post on the previous page.

I think for the first time I may choose the Grass starter on the basis of how damn ugly the other 2 are. I guess we have to hope they get some cool evolutions...

They are all hideous; this coming from someone who frequently works with sprites. I honestly think these are the ugliest starters we've ever had.
They better evolve into something freaking amazing to make up for it.
