I'll probably be a follower and pick Charmander, but my overall favorite pokemon is Squirtle. I just don't like his evolutions, for some reason.

Although there's a chance I'll pick Cyndaquil. I'm going to answer that for now, he needs some love.  ;)

sliux109:
chimchar is the best because everyone likes an offensive starter that sweeps opponents

vs squirtle - blastoise has low attacks and maybe higher defenses but i can't even think of a recovery for it
vs charmander - charizard is alright sometimes....
vs venasaur - is good staller with leech seed and toxic

vs totadile - feraligator has average everything with no good stats
vs typhlosion - i like him with speed and potential solarbeam but has simple counters
vs chikorita - best for dual screener and bad attacks

vs swampert - is really good possible lead and attacker
vs blaziken - though lower attacks, its speed dominates blaziken
vs sceptile - good sweeper too but has better special attack though is better with physical

vs piplup - outspeeds empoleon even with agility
vs torterra - so easy to beat torterra

The only reason I would pic Squirtle is for Blastoise! :p Always cool with his Hydro Cannons

Raktoner:
Either Squirtle or Totodile. Pure water types that can learn ice type moves to get help them defeat their weakness to ground type pokemon. Mudkip's full evo (Swampert) is Water/Ground, so it becomes 4x weak to grass and probably won't get any ice moves off, and Piplup's full evo (Empoleon) is Water/Steel, and since steel is weak to fire it loses that advantage.

You mean grass type (bold) I assume?
In any case, I've always thought Mudkip/Swampert were awesome because grass types typically aren't that common, are they? Or at least I personally hate them, except for Chikorita/Treecko. I figured electric types would be more common for some reason.

I also think that fire neutrality isn't much of a weakness for getting rid of grass-types. After all, I probably wouldn't want my Typhlosion going up against an Empoleon. The fighting type weakness is notable, though, so the steel dual-type does probably hurt more than it helps. (runs away from Blaziken)

^The above is very much based on opinion. I know absolutely nothing about competitive play, so take that with a healthy dosing of salt.
