After 2nd generation it seems that they gave up on the idea of things that you can find in nature like really were would you find a lotad, or a spoink

Where would you find a dragon (Dragonite)?
Where would you find a big dinosaur (Tyranitar)?
Where would you find a big rock snake (Onix and Steelix)?

Pokémon aren't meant to reflect real animals... just cool battle creatures. :)

Just about every pokemon is based on something, and Bulbapedia gives details about that. Some are just more obscure than others.
