Title: Naming Pokemon?
Post by: Zatrei on April 11, 2010, 11:21:25 PM
Are you going to be able to name your Pokemon? I would personally like to be able to, and most Pokemon MMOs don't let you, and I know someone who will only play a Pokemon MMO if they can. Will you be able to?

You could in the old games, and it doesn't seem too hard, so I don't see why they wouldn't. The only small problem I see is during PvP, would your enemies see the nickname you gave, or the name of the actual pokemon?

I wouldn't see why they couldn't see the Nickname. It would make having good names worth it, and add a bit more uniqueness and customization to the game.

Oh my god I can totally sense a funny moment using this feature. Jeremy101 sent out YOUR MOM! (snorlax) What will you do?

Hey, I'm all for customization of names, but it will probably have to go hand in hand with some sort of profanity blocker.

Really dude? Come on, you can do better, I know you can. This one is just way too cliche, everyone uses it.

@Spirit: Yeah, that's the only problem, then you have to factor in all the misspellings of the words, like a $ instead of an S or leaving off letters, adding letters, etc.
That could take a long time, even the really popular MMO's like Runescape haven't completely perfected it, there are still people running around saying the F word spelled differently..

I would be willing to make a list of differents spellings of the words, purely because I have nothing better to do..

I personally love nicknaming my Pokemon; it adds a whole new layer of depth when playing. However, as stated before, people would easily abuse that feature and use inappropriate names and profanity.

The problem still plagues many MMO's. I would love to have the option, but realistically, I don't see it being implemented.

suggestions:
1: you can name your pokemon on your own name, but it will be like in pokemon games, a square with letters, and you can't use any other than universal who can everyones computer can read
2: if you call your pokemon inappropriate it will automatically change name into originally pokemons name
3: another player see that name you chose for pokemon, but when he put pointer on name it will change name into originally, and when pointer removed from pokemons name, it will change again into player-made name

Surely it wouldn't be hard to add a report name feature and if a pokemon was flagged enough times the name would be changed back to default? Of course then you'll get people abusing the report feature. It's a shame the level of maturity of most people online is so low, I would really love to be able to give my pokemon names, that was one of my favourite parts of the games, making all my pokemon MINE, it was the only customisation you got.

a high maturity level on the internet is something that is rare among most communities

Note: all pokemon will have 'talent trees' so essentially each one will be different :)

What about you need to have some (real) 'accomplishments' before being able to name pokemon, to filter out the 'people with low maturity'. Once done, you have the option to ask for the possibility of naming pokemon.

Now, to narrow the filter, there can be a sort of survey among the players who came to battle/chat quite a lot with the concerned player (without the latter knowing; (s)he'll be told to wait for some time before the feature will be available). Some mods can keep a close watch on the player during this time. If the survey and the player deserves the feature, then (s)he'll get it.

Once a mod see that the player is misusing the feature, then the feature will be permanently removed (a record can be kept for that).

I know, it's somewhat complicated... but I'm trying to find a solution to implement the feature, without allowing the 'people with low maturity' have access to it.

i think that you should be able to name your pokemon,

but it would be hard to block all bad names, so made after fighting or see a pokemon with a bad name there should be a report button, where u can click and report all sort of problems

for example you could select, report bug, report bad pokemon name, report trainer,

and it will then open a box for you to write in.

after completing that u click send.

and then admin will get an e-mail like
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
to [email protected]

from trainer tomgregory200

subject: report trainer

while in battle with a trainer called ash010 he send out a charmader with the name FU**

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

a simple way to sort problems out in a MMo

cheers once again

Tom

I hope that we will be able to name our own pokemon. I think that's what the Name Rater is for lol. If not, I would be so surprised  ???

The problem I see here is that people might abuse of this feature. What will happen when the PU team receives an avalanche of reports concerning bad pokemon name? :(

What if the ability for naming your Pokemon came as a reward for something difficult to achieve?
That way, it will get rid of some of the newbs who will be stupid and name their Pokemon stupid names. Plus, there should be some sort of profanity blocker.
                       ~Just an idea~

Right, similar thing to my earlier suggestion :)

How hard would it be to put a list for blocked words, like most games do. I'm sure that you can find a list somewhere on the internet.
Title: Re: Naming Pokemon?

Not quite a bad idea, but I think there are too many ways to write the same word.
Title: Re: Naming Pokemon?
Post by: Raikt on June 02, 2010, 04:29:38 PM
This is just me talking, so don't take it for hard fact. The easiest thing I see, in terms of implementing, would making the player have to achieve the ability to nickname their Pokemon. Showing that they are worthy of doing it. Otherwise, we could just put up a filter that blocks out keywords.

Of course, people would find a way around that so we'd have to rely on catching it ourselves or having the community report Randomuser1 for using "lulzpenorz" in a battle.

Yes, okay, this is the third time this main idea of getting to a certain level, where the trainer is worthy of nicknaming the pokemon is pointed out, by three different people.

I think therefore that could be what the PU team implements, well, if naming pokemon is made possible.

What if, when naming your Pokemon, you could only use letters or numbers. That way, if a profanity blocker was implemented, it would be easier to make. With all the symbols, there might be 100's of ways to spell the word. But with only letters and numbers, maybe about 10.

Is the game itself going to have a chat filter? Because if so, you can use the same words as that uses.

I always thought the problem with naming your pokemon was that it stayed the same wehn it evovled so unless you gave it a generic name like Carl it wouldnt fit i mean Zard is an awesome name for a charizard but for a charmander?

That may be, but I've run into a couple of Pokemon MMOs where you cannot name your Pokemon. Which is why I'm wondering about this one.

Along with the aforementioned filter and restriction to only using letters and numbers, I see it like this:
If there are loopholes in the chat filter, then people are going to be able to curse, amirite? imrite. I do so on rare occasions in other games to punctuate. So, if people are going to be able to curse in chat, then why would we take out an entire awesome feature from the game just so they can't curse without actually typing every time? Furthermore, while the maturity level may be low in mmo's, that also means that few people will really care if they see some sick abomination that vaugely resembles the F bomb. Those who do care are likely to be mature enough to correctly use a 'report' feature.
On the topic of abusing the report feature, we can do this: Every time somebody reports a nickname that is not innapropriate, they get a strike. For the duration of having the strike (Two weeks or so), they will be unable to report ANYTHING. If they continue to get strikes exeedingly often, then their ability to report can be disabled entirely.
