'm pretty sure there was a topic about this on the old website... Anyway, I think the conclusion was that there probably would be more than one method of transport.
To be perfectly honest, after getting the HM fly (Hopefully this will work like in the GBA/DS games) I only use a bike to get to new towns.
but there will be difference of speed between these?
i think that you should be able to ride pokemon like rapidash as a form of transportationThat will take a lot of sprites to realise, so I'm almost sure this ain't gonna happen ;)
....Maybe it's an idea to put a cooldown system on the HM Fly? In other MMORPG's you can go from point A to B by;

Not really, just make like 2 or 3 Pokemon to be ride able, like not all 293, or maybe use the legendaries in this way since they wont battle.
I am talking to a member of the staff and they said its put on the "shelves for later", and There are only like 5 pokemon at most that are even possible to ride
no1 is going to request a Spiritomb or a Snorlax or something like that

Okay. ::)
Let's get back on topic people.
In terms of the Skateboard/Skates thing, it might be a good idea to have those cost less then a bike. Yes, they might go slower but they'll leave the bike to higher level trainers.
Like in terms of speed and price:
Running Shoes
<
Scooter
<
Skateboard
<
Skates
<
Bike
I think they should all be at the same speed. This should be a preference. Some people might like skateboard more than bike or vice versa. Maybe only have shoes with the least speed. No, every transportation vehicle will have it's own speed.
I was thinking about the usage of transportation. Think you should have some stamina bar so you can't over-use the bike/skateboard/whatever. When your stamina bar is empty you just have to walk (the bar will fill itself slowly).
The higher your player level is the more stamina you get so you can use your transportation longer.I think they should all be at the same speed. This should be a preference. Hm, then maybe with their own speeds, comes different stamina limits. Err--like the bike can go faster, but it takes stamina away faster. The running shoes are the slowest, but they last longer.Of course that really wouldn't make sense in real life.
It's more like the other way around. You'll get tired a lot faster when running then when you're on a bike.
I thought that this area had already been discussed a little... ???

Sounds good... powered by an electric type pokemon ;)
or that sun pokemon, I forget its name...Sounds good... powered by an electric type pokemon ;)
Actually, it would be powered by the sun. Note how i said Solar powered.

Yeh that one, maybe if you had it in your party you would get a small speed boost or something whilest using the car?or that sun pokemon, I forget its name...Sounds good... powered by an electric type pokemon ;)

solrock?
Hmm, just a thought, but perhaps you will only be able to use the HM Fly to fly between the main cities of different islands (after you have visited them)? And on the island you use bike, shoes etc. to get around?

About FLY, might be a nice idea you can only fly between big city's so you still have to walk to reach certain towns and city's.

Yes, that's a nice idea. Although, I think it shouldn't be possible to FLY overseas. It's a big distance and it would take away the concept of boats and air planes to travel between islands.
I realize someone asked about riding a pokemon earlier and though it would be fun its not realistic because of limitations and such. That got me thinking possibly later when tournaments and special events get figured out maybe a prize like a mechanical rapidash where it looks like a rapidash but its an item. Now for obvious reasons there should be a poll to maybe choose 3 or for 4 types of mechanical pokemon and keep them as extremely rare prizes. I like the stamina concept and I hope to hear more details on it.

Yeah I'm kind of liking this idea. A mechanical pokemon you win in a pretty tough contest; that doesn't run out of stamina, but here are the restrictions and positives on it.
Restriction 1. You can only use it in the region you won it from.
R2. It's not trade-able or sell-able.
R3. Must have a certain player lvl to ride.
R4. Must have the best mode of land transportation before it.
(example: So if you want to get a skateboard, you need to have running shoes first.)
Positive 1. Faster than all the other modes of transportation.
P2. It's rare so only like 1 in 20 people would have it.
p3. Stamina doesn't run out.
So there would be like 4 different kinds of riding mechanical pokemon, and you could even make a poll about that later to determine it. and if you ever won the contest again, and happened to have the same mechanical pokemon you already had won, you can trade it in for a different one.
The way this thread looks as though the PU team is really considering skateboards, scooters, and cars and "mechanical rapidashes????? (WTF?) so I would like to suggest having the transportation system simlar to Counterstrike or games like S4 where there is a certain amount of time you can use a certain item.Wrong, we're not considering skateboards, scooter, cars and a mechanical bull-ride. If it was totally up to me you'd be walking most of the time with an occasional use of a bike.

Just another thought about the HM fly, perhaps you could only fly a small distance at first and there is a cool-down to use it again. As your player level becomes greater, you can fly longer distances/have a shorter cool-down period.
Oh... and here's a random proposal, After doing a psychic-related quest (Its all on you Spirit), One of the rewards could be that players could attain 5 teleports to the closest Poke' center.
I know boats have been implemented in games before... but how about a luxury cruise ship with a pokemart, pokemon center and possibly other stores and rooms... I believe this would be innovative.
i agree with Phosphorous this game is going to be fun and will have loads of players but going to far into transportation would unapealing to older crowds.
personally I'd say it wold be best to have basic modes of transportation, such as, bike(possible acro and mach), maybe a skateboard, roller blades(ice skates for icy areas), maybe a snow mobile for snow cover areas but anything more might just be over kill, but again just my two cents :)
yea I completely forgot about secondary modes of transportation, but anyway secondary transportation shouldn't be player controlled maybe, it should be a path finding type AI thing where it will take you to where you ask it to bring you, like rent a car, or buying a plane ticketpersonally I'd say it wold be best to have basic modes of transportation, such as, bike(possible acro and mach), maybe a skateboard, roller blades(ice skates for icy areas), maybe a snow mobile for snow cover areas but anything more might just be over kill, but again just my two cents :)
I would define those as the primary modes of transportation.
There should also be secondary modes: planes, trains, andautomobiles, large boats.
But you're right, much more, is too much more.

I'm not really a big fan of fly (for our game) since it's going to be an adventure game. So if you can fly everywhere you're missing out on the real adventure and you'll miss nice quests and stuff.
IF we would implement fly, I think it can only be used on the isle where you are so you can't fly from isle 1 to isle 2.
Teleport will only send you to the latest PokéCenter. If that PC is NOT on the current island you'll be send to the nearest one.
I'm not sure if this has been asked but regarding the transit system, will this be a real time system? As in will there be a train timetable, planes/boats leaving at certain times?oh wow i never thought of that good question ^ ^
OR will it be a case that you just go to the station, buy a ticket for a certain cost, then you travel immediately.
In either case, will some amount of playing time be lost to travelling? And will this depend on distance?

Yes, we're already planning to implement such a ship. :)
Okay, I'm just going to put some Ideas out there and let you read them:All posts made by Pika are actually me. I decided to change my name because, well, I didn't like it :P. Also Mr Pokemon is an awesome name!
-What if trains/subways/ships/etc. left at small intervals like 5 minutes. It takes a minute or 2 to reach the destined city. However, that city must be relatively close. This gives riders time to communicate but not so much that it gets annoying. The riders may then chose to stay on or get off. Or board a different transportation system going to another city.
-Fly should only be able to take you so far before your pokemon gets tired. It should have a cool-down time of approx 5 min. as well. This should get rid of instant, across the world travel, and add an aspect of realism.
-You should be able to buy transportation vehicles such as bikes, roller blades, and skateboards. They should also be different speeds and prices as was discussed in previous posts.
The order of price and speed should be like this:
-Running shoes
-Roller blades
-Scooter
-Bike
-?Moped?-super expen$ive
Maybe game creators can get little cars ;D
heh-heh, maybe not...THANKS FOR AT LEAST READING!!

(i.e. a level one hunded Charizard could take you around the world and back and be ready to fly again in like two minutes, while a level five pidgey would takke ten minutes of recharge to takeyou two cities away).
Okay, I'm just going to put some Ideas out there and let you read them:Oooo i just had a (possibly) great idea!

pokemon themed gokarts ingame! Such as pikachu or mario!
i think that you should be able to ride pokemon like rapidash as a form of transportation
i think that you should be able to ride pokemon like rapidash as a form of transportation
Pretty much this. Instead of bikes, you can ride a pokemon.
lol, if following poke' sprites are considered time consuming.
I'd hate it for the person that'd have to make the riding poke' sprites
lol, if following poke' sprites are considered time consuming.well currently i dont think riding pokemon would ever be worth it but thas just my opinion ^ ^ and as for following pokemon sprites, im trying to make those on my own, just for fun of course

Ditto'd just transform into a dodge viper!i think that you should be able to ride pokemon like rapidash as a form of transportation

i agree that riding pokemon would be good but not instead of bikes because some pokemon will be unrideable (ditto or some ghost types ect).
I read up to page 5; so, if this has been mentioned, forgive me.
However, the idea I had for transportation borrows from a few other games. I'm not saying that it should be a direct replica, but if it works, it works, you know? For flying, I do agree that it would detract from the overall game experience. Being able to fly between towns on the fly would make the game short, even with an abundance of content. So, instead, why not move along the lines of World of Warcraft and make it so that flying can happen between preset points. You would have to meet up with whoever was stationed at both of those points and pay to fly between them. That way, you would still have to travel everywhere on foot. It would just be more convenient for players who have already explored the land. The price would keep it from being abused, as well.

That's the idea, "something" like that.
We will have planes, trains, and automobiles
....and boats
Okay, I can't confirm any of those, but you get the idea.
Basically, as far as game play goes, they are very different, but when it comes to game code, transporting your character from one location to another, is all the same.
