Title: following pokemon
Post by: Counter Bug on December 27, 2009, 12:44:07 PM
My idea is that you could create an area inwhich the first pokemon in your party follows you on the map. Like the pikachu in Pokemon Yellow edition. I think this would be more fun.

And maybe you could challenge other people's pokemon, which you can see on that area. And you would have to use your following pokemon.

Thats my idea. What do you think about it?

Of course we would like this too, but the hard part is creating sprites of all the pokemon :(

8 sprites for one pokemon. Other people might do that job.

Yes but that would eventually lead up to more than 8x400 sprites  :P Cause IF we do it, we shouldn't limit the possible pokemon that can follow you.

8*493 sprits... that's almost 4000!!! sprites  :-\
But yeah if we find someone who is willing to make them all, sure why not.

Maybe it is just me. But is'nt 3 sprites per direction needed?

(3*4)*493 = 5916

Why do you need 3 pics for the steps? Do you give your sprites three legs?  ;D

Well, but I understand its too much work and you need the time for other stuff.

If you don't use 3 sprites (minimal) for walking it'll look like they're hovering behind you and that's just cheap.

try visiting spriters-resource(dot)com
someone just ripped Over-World pokemon sprites for HGSS
just ask that dude for the permission for the sprite so PU can use them

That would be a very very easy solution to the problem. However, any sprite you find on the internet is most likely 16*16. Pokemon-universe is using 48*48 tiles to get a more detailed look.

easy fix all you have to do is use the HSSS sprites as a guide to making the 48x48 ones yet stil would take forever

I'd assume we'd give them a hover effect, which would still mean we need 3 sprites.

HG/SS overworld pokemon sprites are variable in size (pokemon aren't all the same after all) but the good news is they are the right size for PU. They use two frames, and it looks fine in-game, so we will probably use them. There are a lot more possibilities for this than just following pokemon. An example would be wild pokemon (though not as a replacement for regular encounters), and I have a few interesting ideas for how this would work ;)

wouldn't you need 2 sets of sprites for each pokemon, to include the shiny forms?
Title: Re: following pokemon
Post by: Alais on December 30, 2009, 12:13:59 AM
Recolouring isn't hard, I don't know if the shiny forms are available for ripping from HG/SS but if they're not I'm sure I or another member of the team will recolour them.

Recolouring is very simple. More so when you have Photoshop. I'd help recolour them, if need be.

For the following pokemon effects, why don't you just take what its like from yellow?

I own yellow, and the pikachu turns around when you're at a standstill, and you can check it's feelings, too.

just ideas people, they're just ideas ;D ;D

Maybe you could just limit it to starter pokemon? I don't think many people would mind it and 3*4*12 is only 144 :)

I like that idea... but random question... what will be the options for starting pokemon? (~Directed to PU team or anyone that knows~)

Will it be the original three? bulbasaur, charmander, squirtle?
Johto three? totodile, cyndaquil, chikarita?
or others?

I dont know the other landmasses or any pokemon after Johto.

Thease are the starter in the original Pokemon Games. Who knows which pokemon will be available. I suggest fighting/psychic/dark pokemon.

We will use the starters from the original games (except for Eevee and Pikachu), like Declan_23 has listed.

There is no reason to limit it to starter pokemon, overworld sprites are available for all pokemon.

so you'll also be able to have the option for eevee or pikachu as a starter?

To PU Development Team,

A question about pokemon locations, ( i know this topic has strayed a bit, but I just thought of this)

Pokemon like pikachu have been in every game, so are there certain areas to where it can be found,
or can you find it in obvious areas like FR/LG, (forest, power plant,) S/R/E (Safari Zone, speakin bout it, will we have one?)

Also, a suggestion, if/when you decide to make the pokemon movement sprites, have a team for each type, ( Team 1 gets Water, Team 2 gets Fire, Team 3 gets Grass, etc., etc., etc.)

Yes we will try to put Pokemon in their "natural habbit".

Yes, but not in the first beta

if i may elaborate for the poster Mr_Dark I think by teams they mean like a team of real people could be assigned to make a certain type instead of having 2-3 people making all the pokemon over worlds them selfs

I'm pretty sure (and I said this earlier) that we are going to use the overworld sprites from HG/SS. I'm also wondering where this huge number of pixel artists would come from if we were gonna make them original. Currently we only have one for the whole project, and that's me, lol. Let alone 2-3 just for the overworlds, or 2-3 per type !

well i am a pixel artist if you check under my post in the pokemon section... unfortunately i am living in Northa America so i am out of luck in being part of the team...
