Ideas & Suggestions / The big pvp thread (suggestions here please)
« on: February 07, 2010, 09:08:20 PM »
Hello there Pokémon fans!
Alright so we have had a lengthy and heated discussion on the forums lately about using items etc in pvp battles.
http://pokemon-universe.com/index.php/topic,339.0.html
Please read this before postig your suggestions since we dont really need the same suggestion twice :D.
We have been talking about keeping it the way it is in the games atm, hence no items at all.
But since this is an mmo I and other people feel like there should be more depth in the PVP battles.

After some back and forth I came up with 2options:
1. Designing PVP specific items
2. Designing usable cooldowns that are obtained through levling.

So now im here asking you guys to help me complete my idea!
You got a good idea for an item that could work well in pvp? Great post here!
You have been thinking about a "skill" that could work in pvp? Cool, post here!
I want to create a scenario where players have a hard time choosing between attacking or using a skill/item, this way the match becomes allot more interesting, instead of having players use all their skills right of the bat. Get my point?

Now here is some examples:

Gammal

Skill1 - Pokémon Crusade lvl1
Info: Instead of using an pokemon ability this turn, you instead boost your entire party´s morale, making the next attacking move have a 50% extra chance to crit.
This effect lasts untill an attacking move is used or 2turns, effect transfers if you descide to switch pokemon before attacking.

Item1 -  Resisting potion
Info: Throws a potion at your Pokemon, making them take 15% less damage from unresisted attacks.
This effect stacks with natural resist, taking 30% less from a "not very effective" attack
but remains at 15% from a "super effective"

Scout - You scout the area carefully instead of attacking, you now know the area as the back of you hand (hey is that a new birth mark?) making your Pokemon have x% chance to gain the upper hand making them get 1+prio when attacking. Lasts 2turns

Change to sleep,poison, burn and leach seed.
I was thinking guys, maybe there areas need a bit of updating to?
Pokemon is burned, enemy uses water attack; the effect is removed.
Pokemon gets leach seeded, enemy uses fire attack, leach seed is burned away.
Pokemon gets frozen. Attacker uses fighting move, the ice shatters (dont wanna stack effects on fire here)
Pokemon gets slept. Attacker uses any attacking move, user wakes up the NEXT turn but if confused.

Let the brainstorming begin!
You like?

Summary of suggestions (I will update this as much as possible)

Kuhns:
[Pokemon Type]Guard Spray: Guards against type moves for two turns, no matter the Pokemon Type.

Example:[Geodude Vs Mudkip. Player uses a Water Type Guard Spray on Geodude. Mudkip uses Water Gun...the attack is only 1.0x effective.]
--
Skill-Last Stand

Info: The active Pokemon gains a 95% chance that they will survive the next attack. [Can't use unless Pokemon has 10% or less health--With a 100% chance their next(last) attack will hit.]
--

Copy-Catch [Item]:

Info: Effective until an item or skill is used, or the active Pokemon in which the item was used is taken out.

Effects: Covers the active Pokemon in a sticky spray, enabling the Pokemon to steal the next item or skill the opponent uses.

Declan_23
weather effects, e.g. if fighting your friend in the arctic (or snow arena), all Ice attacks get +10% boost

Impwadman
Skill - Rapid Attack

Info: The active pokemon has an 80% chance of attacking first and a 50% chance of getting a critical hit.

Effective Until......

The enemy pokemon uses a speed lowering attack or....

The enemy pokemon uses a water, poison, or ground attack that will essentially lower the speed even though it doesn't say it did.
--

schindle

suggestion:
for winning pvp battles you get equippement for your trainer. clothes etc. Those special clothes got effects for all of your pokemon.

explenation:
when a trainers pvp master, he got clothes that impress your pokemon :-D
or that scare the enemys pokemon. :-)
item:
cloak of quickness
your pokemon got an 50% higher agility for the first turn it gets in the fight.

bracers of xxx
your enemys pokemon are scared of your aura. they lose 10 stages of health.

--

items that say:
increase the damage of the attack by 1%.

its an item that can be used on every attack, and will increase that attacks damage by 1%.
There should be also special attack-items like:
'hydro pump only item':
increases the damage of your hydropump by 2%. in Addition every Hydropump got the chance to trigger 'water strenght' that increases all your water damage by 10% for the next 3 turns.

Game Features / Re: Pokemon Tournaments
« on: February 07, 2010, 02:26:16 PM »
Dunno if it'll help... but i have an idea on how to make points...

how about doing it like the style of tennis?? :)

each battle wins gives you points, like 10 points per win.
So highest person points will be seed one, and so on.

Also, for a tournament,
we can schedule a top 128 or just 64 seeded person :D

Tournaments will also have points... example:
64 -> 32 : winners will get +20 points
32 -> 16 : winners will get +30 points
16 -> 8 : winners will get +50 points
8 -> 4 : winners will get +70 points
4 -> 2 : winners will get +90 points
2 -> champion : champion will get +100 points

therefore, champion will get 360 points :D

but... there's also a catch:
Seeded will have an increased point level, like if I defeat the seeded 1 person, i will get instead of just 10, maybe 50 points

its just an idea... :D

Why make it so complicated? The end result is the same anyway.
Keep it simple. Nuff said

My suggestions are a couple posts up if you didn't see them before.

Why not? Players use them all the time in battles with NPCs. If restricted right, items can add a new twist and layer to PvP battles. Although, yes, I wouldn't want to debate on what items to use/not use before the battle. My thought was banning the use of some items altogether, while continuous use of others raises the chance that those items will fail.

Yes I have read them, but I think in my personal oppinon that they are very vauge, however you might be on to something.
How about making a totally new set of items designed to work in pvp battles?
Or something in the line of "talents" as you level up, some once in a battle usable cooldowns.
For example: lvl50; Pokemon crusade; Used instead of a pokemon ability.
Boosts the morale of your pokemon making the next attack to have 50% chance to critical hit.
Something in that along that line.
This would remove the whole "no items/more items!" argument and still adding a bit of extra depth to the PVP in PU.
This could ofcourse also be an item that you obtain ingame, but a PVP designed one.
But I still strongly belive that adding potions and other items normally obained through questing and grinding would destroy the fun in pvp.

I think you misunderstood me.
 I was talking about generall pvp. If someone challenges you, you should just be able to press "accept" without having to start a big conversation about what if any items are allowed.

And its not that im not willing to comprimise, im simply asking what exactly the use of items would bring to the table, and to respond to your comment:

Im astonished by your ability to argue against my suggestion by completely avoiding my arguments and not adding any of your own.

So to help you out a bit here, im going to re-frace my response into a question(s).
Why should there be items allowed in battle?
Is pvp going to become more fun?
More balanced?
Are we going to see more Pokemon in the meta game?

I would also refer to my above post about the item use in combat and how it would affect the meta game, if you do not agree with what I have posted, please do tell, but argue your point so that I can understand you point of view.
Just saying "items should be allowed!" is not a proper argument.

::)

Then how about this: only certain items are allowed AT ALL in the PvP battles. No revives, no full restores, none of that. Potions through Hyper are allowed, Heals are allowed, Held items are allowed, stat boosters are allowed.

Item Stat standing:

Use of a Hyper potion: 75% rate-->down 10% at every use (all the way down to 1%) etc.

Or how about this: Just put the use of items as a PvP option that both players decide on before the battle.

OR we could just keep it the way it is... hence no items at all
What would being able to use items bring to PVP? More fun? More strategies? More balanced play?
no,no, and no.

In the end (PvP) battles will be as fun as you make them ;)

I do not agree.
With the possibility of setting up a baton-pass chain and also being able to HEAL the Pokemon with items does not sound fun to me at all.
Also the use of items will remove allot of strategies to the game itself.
What is the meta game going to be like in PU if we allow items?
A team of 6tanks...
Stall wars
Baton pass chains
A lot of careless stats boosting that will be hard to stop.

Chains are and SHOULD be tricky to set up.
Easy chain (from the top of my head)

Note: the * would be how it would work with items

Ninjask - Sub, protect untill at max speed  * sword dance since you are getting to full HP atleast once.
6+speed and +2attack (you could prolly get more but lets keep it at that)

Baton pass ->

Venusaur - +6speed sleep powder, ingrain on the swap  (I realize that venusaur doesnt learn baton pass, but this is just an example, you get the point. If someone feel like complaining about this and not looking at the big picture I will just move a grass pokemon to the last slot on the chain and then have it use ingrain)
(the pokemon cannot be phazed by roar etc)
Baton pass ->

Vaporeon - Aqua ring, wish, Acid armour, * sub  full restore
Sub does NOT break by even 2attacks

Baton Pass ->

Scizor - Swords dance x3 + Just heal here if he takes dmg

Baton Pass ->

Rhyperion:  Ingrain heal, Aqua ring heal. 6+attack, 6+speed 6+Armour GG

I could make the chain 6pokemon long but at this point there is really no need for that.

Ok you might argue that you can use Haze to remove the +stats
Yes indeed you can, but you are then once again limiting the amount of Pokemon allowed into the meta game.
I bet we would see allot of Weezing´s running around.

So yes, every player has the same option, but is that really what you guys are after?
making stat boosting moves even more powerful?
The big DOWNSIDE to the moves in the current games is that while you boost your stat, you opponent gets a "free" turn without any damage from the set-up Pokemon, hence you can counter it if you play smart.
But with allowing potions that downside will no longer exist.
If your buffed sweeper takes damage since you used stats boost instead of attack, you can just heal it.
Please explain to me how this would make the battling (pvp) process of the game more fun.
It sounds to me like people like this idea because they cant handle the switching part of the match, which is a big part of being successful in Pokemon.

On that note. Say you switch in a Pokemon to take an attack you think the opponent us going to use. But instead he choses a different one and takes your Pokemon down to say 20%, "Hey I made a mistake in my switching, but who cares? FULL RESTORE."
You might argue "yeah but he took 80% hence hes going to do that much dmg to you again"
IF I keep the pokemon switched in yes, but items are not only usable on the pokemon you are currently using.

Or how about this scenario:

I use Charizard versus a grass Pokemon
Sub on the switch
Belly Drum on his attack (lets say he doesn't break sub, or is asleep)
Sallac berry activates, thats +6attack +2speed ( I think)

Now I only have 20%ish hp with my Pokemon and it can be taken down with sandstorm or simmilar.
Now what happens if we throw a full restore into the mix?
+6attack +2speed +sub 100% hp.

Or how about the effects of toxic spikes / toxic?
Get a bulky pokemon with toxic, toxic all pokemon and begin the stall
Even if both sides has unlimited Full restore to use the one using toxic will win since sooner or later all pokemon die from 1tick, further limiting the pokemon allowed into the meta game of PU

Thats the type of strategies you are encouraging in PU`?

With the permission of the moderators I would like to copy this post and make a new thread with a poll.

Nah, I prefer it the way it is, that is you don't have the TM anymore in your inventory after you used it, unless you get/buy another.

I agree... If making all moves to easy to get, the game will get booring fast, I say make it hard to get new TM´s, but not impossible!

I dont think there should be ANY items appart from hold ones in pvp.
If someone is using a curse lax, cursing, cursing, cursing, down to very low hp, you can kill it since you are faster... But wait.. FULL RESTORE! GREAT! GG... NOT FUN

I somewhat agree.
I find it sad that some pokemon even in their last evolution state are not viable to use at all.
But then again, balancing EVERY single pokemon in the game would be a huge undertaking, and just the balancing process would take years, and if you add the "finishing move" and poisen stacking that would require even more balancing.

It WOULD be great if everything was perfectly balanced, but I think the road to get there might be to long and to hard.

yeah, if implemented, it would be more for records

i don't think this is necessary, but kinda cool, like having randomly placed flowers in towns, they have no real purpose other than to make it more pretty

But then, people do like pretty things ;)
