Title: Map Showroom (PKMN)
Post by: ameyathed on March 08, 2010, 05:16:02 PM
Its basically some of my originally created maps with the help of PWO map editor.
If you do have some time to spare, please comment on my maps, the areas I need to improve and other unpleasant things you find in these maps. Both of them are routes, I assure you they are originally created by me.Will add more maps as I make them.I know I need the fix the patches in-between the grasses, will update it as soon as possible.
Have a nice day! ^^

hrmm, I think I would cut down on the tall grass a little bit, and try not to make the trees look so linear in position, other than that not bad  ;D

Well... stephenkill just said what I would have said. There are too much tall grass.

Then, in the first picture, there is a narrow passage there, which seems to be useless since there is a rock blocking the way. It's not usually possible to move those rocks nor break them.

In the second one, there is a rock (at the bottom centre) that can be moved by strength... I don't quite see the use here. Oh, the steps between the higher and lower ground seems weird to me.

I love it, it looks great, but i agree with the tall grass also. Maybe put a path into it so if people dont want to battle they dont have to but if they do well go into the grass lol. But also the more grass there is the more challenge so if thats the goal then its fine.

I'll try to modify the maps as per your opinions guys.
But I don't agree with the tall grass thing. There has to be tall grass for pokemon.
The smaller trees could be removed.
Thanks for your reply guys! ^^

No doubt, tall grass is what makes it a pokemon game. But you have tall grass everywhere. Only allowing small squares to be tall grass-less. t Thats really the only thing thats "wrong".

lol, I was bored, so I created this 'screenshot'  :-X
I used some tiles from the internet and edited them (like changing the colors).
the only program I used was Photoshop.
It isn't great, but /care ^^
It's a 'city' in the mountains and it hasn't much residents ;P

It's nice I would say.

The building at the upper left... I could bet it's the one in RSE in which you enter to take the cable.

Oh, and I find it somewhat funny that the people doesn't seem to be warmly clothed :D

oh, and ameyathed, on the second map, those stairs are backwards, according to the layers of how you tiled it, the little cliff is higher than where the road is , therefore the stairs should be the other way.

Ghehehe,, even I didn't think 'bout that  ;D
However, I'm not an pixel artist, the only thing I can do with sprites is to give them all colors of the rainbow ;P

It looks good to me. It's very clean and the theme is constant. It would be great if little pokemon icons were on there, interacting with the people and everything. Keep up the good work.

I have to disagree with some people. I think it looks best with the tall grass everywhere. It makes the area looked untouched and more natural. I think if more buildings or signs were added it would ruin the picture... But that's my opinion. I prefer nature maps over city maps.

why would buildings be added? It's not a town. And without city maps, you're just a kid living in the wilderness, no gyms , marts, pokecenters, etc.... >.<

Maybe you could reduce the amount of grass (cause the wild pkm may have eaten it) and have patches of taller grass. If the tiles are availble.

The only place I imagine you might have consistant grass of the same would in fields or farmland.

Can we get more info about the route? the terrain? Is that a lake or a river?

I don't know if this is any help.

That's true, but I'd rather want to be living in a little shack in the forest than in a smog infested town :D Bahahaha.

The first map is a general route which leads to a city.
The second one is also a general route but there is no city up, left, right or down in that map.
Also decreasing the tall grass could make the map look bland..just imagine it as a really grassy untouched area  :D
Also the stairs can be as we wish, they aren't backwards those are the correct tiles.
Thank you for all your reviews!

The maps look fine for general routes with no points of interest,  but I'm afraid that stair tile in map 2 is definitely wrong.

One has to wonder why there is a random fountain in the middle of the residential portion of your town. Furthermore, why isn't the water in the fountain frozen over?

....

But mainly, why is there a fountain in the town at all?  :P

Water from a hot spring is usually turned into an attraction to lure in travelers. Not to mention the fact that the 'hot water' isn't steaming, looks like water (and not lava), and is coming from a fountain.  :P

Well, not if the hot water passes through cold passages before coming up, where it is the much less hot, but neither frozen. ;D

::just kidding::

never questioning the logic of a gameworld ._. i mean think about all the times you played a game underwater and dint drown. or all the times you walked inside a volcano and dint die from the extreme heat and toxic gass's. or the floating peaces of land that should be falling but somehow are suspending in mid air.

dont mean to sound like a science nerd or anything but. if water is in movement its not going to freeze. thats why rivers and some ponds and lakes stay all liquid like. lol :P

Not bad, a lot of little mistakes, mainly layering problems, make sure to 1st layer grass where it is needed, you messed up a few corner tiles, and it doesn't look like water would pour out in that manner from those holes XD hrmmm...those stairs don't belong there >.< Those are supposed to be jumpable, so why would one need stairs. Yeah, just a lot of layer things, especially the mountains. oh , and sooo many rocks XD

Good for a second attempt though!

The only things I saw was no entrance to the water, the water pouring out of the holes incorrectly, and the tall grass looks like little trees with three leaves on each side. I'm not an expert on this, so I wouldn't know how to fix it, but I'm sure someone could find a way. Other than that, it looked great at a first glance  :)
You should continue with making maps Latios, they are looking awesome  =D

I noticed that there was only one streetlamp. Normally street lamps line the streets. Also, There shouldn't be grass in a city, as cities are safe places with no wild pokemon or trainers.
However, this is a good map and I think you should keep it up ;)

Hi there!
I started to realise that Photoshop isn't the right program to create maps (only for editing tiles, colors, etc.), so this time I used Game Maker  :D
Again I used the setting from the wild going over into the city. This time the map/screenshot takes place in a forest and above the city you can see a piece of the lake. No trainers this time, so don't bother mention it xP.

@Dvys, i'm sure you have noticed by my post, that in fact, there are two very simple ways to talk to one specific person on the same thread :)
Or you could just go ahead and PM them, but wouldn't you want everyone to here your opinion?

Edit: To the author of the topic - can we post mapping images that aren't for pokemon games?

Yes Jallas, in 2D. I don't know if the PU team has released a public map editor. But you could always download a software called "tiled" which is an awesome map editor. And if you have RMXP you can map in that. Otherwise just search on google. It almost always has an answer to your questions. I hope I helped ^^

I have mapped some before, but not for a while but still I think I cooked up something nice.
And the pokemon map editor I had to deal with was tricky...
Anyways!!! Check my first ever ->POKEMON<- map out: :)

I don't know man, I just downloaded some map editor and the tiles where there. But it's the tileset for ruby/saphire if that is what you're asking.

No has posted a map in a while. I quite enjoyed looking at them, so I finally decided to try making one. Let me know what you think of it. :P

Looks really nice Aon, but on the cave to the left, there is no way to get to the upper level. I'm assuming there would be one to the right? Also, the town is kind of empty. You may want to consider adding some object to fill some space. Otherwise, nice map =D

You can download a program called RGP Maker XP. Once you do that, and install it, then you can google and download a program called Pokemon Essentials. It comes with basically everything you need to start making maps in the RSE style of gameplay. You can also add in new tilesets you find online relatively easy.

Ok, here's a map done with my own rombase.
Special thing is I used a 10-tile tree.

Uhm, didn't need lots of time to map it. But inserting the tiles in a rom was hard work =/
