Ideas & Suggestions / Re: Tournament winners make items?
« on: August 16, 2011, 11:13:18 AM »
Yeah, well obviously throwing unregulated items into the game for anyone to take has drastic consequences (It's happened quite a few times in MTG), and so they would be tested, but still, I think it could be a valid idea to consider. :)

I actually have an Intet EDH deck because I love him too!
Unfortunately it sucks because I suck at EDH...
My favourite dragon (or more accurately, dragoness) is Dragon Broodmother. She was my favourite card for a while, and I never got tired of playing her. With 2 Crucibles of Fire she gives you a 7/7 Flier every turn, even your opponents'!
I really want to make a mono-red ramp deck using Seething Song, Rite of Flame, Pyrettic Ritual, etc. And then dragonstorm for amazing dragon-playing.

I understand that it would be difficult to balance, and that's why you would only let the top-level of players do it. They'd know what the game needs (and I guess the devs would too, but the players might think of something the devs didn't), and they wouldn't abuse the right. And even if they did, the devs have every right to say 'no' and give them money or a shiny or something instead.
Also, it wouldn't be exclusive to that player. It might be a quest reward or something similar, or a prize in future tournaments if it was really good (although I doubt that sort of item would be approved in the first place).
Anyway, it was just a suggestion I thought of that might make things more interesting.

Ah, I see. My mono-blue myr deck just uses Paladium Myr and Galvanizer, since I only have 2 non-colourless spells (Fabricate and Rite of Replication). I love kicking my Rite of Replication on Myr Battlesphere; it makes 5 more 'spheres, which gives me 20 more Myr! I also have Myr Matrix which is good when I get infinite mana, and a Master Transmuter thrown in there, just because I had it spare and I wanted to make more myr with Battlespheres, as well as prevent targeting on my artifacts.
I really would like a Myr Turbine but I'm too lazy to buy a few at the moment...
I have a deck on MTGO I'm quite fond of which I call my 'Death Shuffle' deck which forces my opponents to shuffle their decks, and then kills them for it. I think it's really clever!
I also have a less original deck based around another card I like, The Cheese Stands Alone (Or more accurately, it's legitimate version, Barren Glory). They're both fun, but they're no tournament winners.
And I agree entirely with you, Silver, on EDH, but I'd still buy the decks, purely because of the colours of some of the generals, and obviously Sol Ring.

Ideas & Suggestions / Tournament winners make items?
« on: August 15, 2011, 01:17:24 PM »
So, I had a little think (and a quick search in case someone had posted this before (I couldn't see anything)), and I thought, 'Maybe tournament winners in-game can make their own items'?
People who win higher ranked tournaments (I'll assume for the purposes of my idea that there will be a ranking system of sorts so players who're relatively new to the game don't come up against experts) and have a knowledge of competitive battling are the kinds of trainers who know what kinds of items need to be added to the game.
As an example, in Gen V, the Eviolite was introduced. This was my absolute favourite item in the whole generation, as it introduced an amazing way of making previously unusable pokémon usable in competitive play. I had a Dusknoir for a while (I didn't really like him), but when I heard about Eviolite, I immediately bred up a Dusclops with Will-o-Wisp, Pain Split, Curse and Substitute, and I love him to pieces! He's amazing in NFE, takes hits like a tank and deals damage like a boss!
Eviolite is the sort of item I'd like to see more of, the kind of item that makes you go, 'This can work if I do x, y and z to pokémon w, with v ability...' That kind of thing, in my opinion, would be the kind of item that not only has people blindly spamming buttons and grinding, but also thinking about their game and how they can improve, and thinking of new strategies that make interesting pokemon (perhaps like Dunsparce) worth playing.
Now, granted I did note that you guys were 'balancing' the stats so we can use lesser used pokémon, but I think an innovative item creation system (obviously for the people who know what they're doing and not the kinds of people who go 'Hold item deals 9999999999999 damage to my opponent when they attack me') would keep the game interesting and keep old players on their toes as to what they might face, as well as introduce new players with interesting and more bizarre items than they're used to.

Yes, Niv is a pain in EDH especially (Sorry, but I'm not fond of 'commander'). There are so many UR EDH decks, especially on MTGO.
Ah, okay, I can see how red might work now. As far as artifact destruction goes, though, you might as well be playing green (ie Naturalize), and that gives you your ramp, but I guess you do miss out on the burn spells.
I did make a mono-blue illusion deck around Lord of the Unreal, but I don't think it was very good. I guess it was okay, but I'm not great at standard because I don't like playing aggressively. Swinging at them every turn makes me feel like an a-hole...
Also, Legacy is even more fun with 4 dark rituals, one swamp, lightning greaves and Phage the Untouchable. Problem is, you need a godhand/4 demonic tutors to pull it off...

Yeah, as I said, probably meant to favourite the site and just forgot! In fact, I forgot to yesterday when I first posted as well, and had to google to find it again! T_T
That's my fault, though. I tend to forget important things and remember useless rubbish...

@Amphi
Ah, I see. Well, everyone starts somewhere! I've been playing for almost 2 years now, though as far as play is concerned I haven't improved much! Mostly I play slowly to play my combos and see how my opponent reacts.
So, RW artifacts? I love artifacts... Just off the top of my head, this is probably a Scars block starter deck that you've modified? Might I suggest adding blue or black, as there are many cool artifacts in these colours, especially from Shards of Alara block. Blue also has awesome spells for artifacts, like Fabricate, Tinker, and March of the Machines. Bar that, I'd add some cool artifacts like Scourglass and Ethersworn Canonist, as well as Open the Vaults/Roar of Reclamation, if you're running purely artifacts.
My artifact deck is WUB (White, Blue and Black, that is), and I like to think it works pretty well. I can post a link to where I have a cardlist on Blackborder.com (Where I buy my cards) if you'd like to see it!
@Bing
Izzet colours? Love it! I have myself an Izzet (UR Control/Burn from Ravnica, in case you didn't know already) deck that I love. I'm hoping you've got 4 Lightning Bolts and 4 Counterspells, as they're the staples of such decks, and they're just great spells! Also, Gelectrode is a very useful creature for the decks, as the damage it can cause racks up pretty quickly, especially with 2 or more out!
Eldrazi can be a pain a lot of the time in formats that aren't Commander because it's difficult to create that much mana. My favourite spell is Explosive Vegetation, but Harrow tends to be the favourite. Also, a nice mana loop in RG is 2 Cloud Keys+Grinning Ignus if you're only after colourless mana, but you can throw in a Skyshroud Elf for Red if you really need it.

Actually, I've had this username for almost 8 years now, and I use it for everything!
Basically wherever you see 'Television17' on the internet, it's me (Except YouTube. Someone got in before me, apparently...).
Long story short, it was an in-joke between my friends and I for about 24 hours, and it stuck to me when I made a character on Runescape with that name as a joke.
And I don't like to post one-liners, so if I'm going to do an intro thread, I'm going to make it count. :)

I'm not sure that a RB bloodthirst would work in standard; wouldn't it be better to go with mono-black vampires and use that one whose name escapes me who gives other vampires bloodthirst 3?
Personally I don't follow Standard much as the cards are too expensive for so little time to use them, particularly when you live in a small town where the only card store went out of business.
I tend to play older cards as they work better with my combos. My favourite deck is probably my saproling deck. The combo involves Terra Eternal (Lands are indestructible) and Life and Limb (All Saprolings and all Forests are 1/1 Forest Saprolings) in conjunction with Mycoloth (GG3, 4/4, Devour 2. At the beginning of your upkeep, put a 1/1 Saproling into play for each +1/+1 counter on ~) to pump out loads of saprolings which are indestructible and tap for G. Then when I have a ~100/100 Mycoloth or greater, I Overwhelming Stampede and swing with +1000 +100/+100 Indestructible Tramplers.
I actually have a mono-black rat deck in the mail (if they'll ever ship it) which works with Memory Crystal and Lab Rats to pump out rat tokens for as much black mana as I can spare, then use Mirror Gallery to put out 4 Marrow Gnawers and make loads more rats.
Do you have many non-standard format decks?

Hey Ez,
I like your banners! You do a really good job!
My question is, do you just do pokémon stuff? Or can you do a banner with anything on it?
Also, could you maybe have a template or form to fill out to submit to you? Rather than just saying 'Can I have this' or whatever.

So, I play MTG (more IRL than online), and like to talk about it quite a bit! I thought perhaps we could get a general discussion thread going.
So, Maybe if you decide to post, talk about one of your decks? Or yourself as a player?
I'm a Johnny player (combo player, that is), and my favourite colour is blue. I'll post some of my decks, but only if this thread gets a little interest. If not, I won't bother writing it all out...

New Trainers / Welcome / Hi all
« on: August 14, 2011, 08:05:21 AM »
Hey there everyone. Television17 introducing myself.
I did make an account here a while ago but I forgot about this place until today...
So, I thought I might introduce myself to the community.
I'm... Well, I'd like to say I'm a veteran of competitive battling, but that's probably not true. I know a lot more than I put into practice, and I haven't been battling for ~1-2 years competitively. Most of my evenings have been spent hunched over my DS, crying in frustration as the Battle Tower/Subway/Frontier endlessly wallops my carefully selected and fine-tuned teams. >.>
If anyone has a good strategy for getting that last star I'd love to hear it (Got it once in Diamond, gods know how).
I digress. I like to think I have a fairly good knowledge of pokémon in general (although it does sometimes get a little rusty in my gaps between games), and I'm probably a breeder first (involuntarily as it may be), a trainer second, and a battler third.
I'd like to get involved in this community a little more, as I think this game looks very promising (provided Nintendo/Game Freak/anyone else doesn't have it taken down), and if the updates and patches are as community friendly as I'd hope, it should be really awesome. The screenshots in the given section are looking very well polished, and I'm liking the character customization very, very to my liking (I didn't enjoy playing Battle Revolution for 40+ hours just to get blonde hair...).
I'm looking forward to see what the developers of this promising game end up using in place of EVs (Yes, I do read the FAQs and such!), as well as seeing functions which would make the game more community interactive.
For example, (and I'm just throwing my two cents into the ring here) I think it would be great to see some new items which might be quest rewards, or the winners of tournaments getting to make their own item for players to use in-game, as innovative incentives. I also like the idea of getting new trainer abilities that make playing the game almost seem like a class-based system in and of itself.
I think it would also be quite cool to be able to ride pokémon not just when using fly or surf, but as mounts to travel faster in game (Possibly using new moves or abilities to do this), as I've always wanted to be able to do that sort of thing.
Anyway, perhaps a little more about myself, no?
My first game (not just pokémon, but at all) was Pokémon Gold version, and I've been hooked on the franchise ever since. I own every main series game, bar Silver, LeafGreen and Yellow (In English, anyway; I have two Japanese versions), and my most played-through version is Emerald, totaling 6 times, I think. My most-hours game is my Diamond version, on which I've racked up 750+ hours. Across all my games, I've spent more than 3000 hours capturing, trading, training, evolving, and breeding every pokémon, and have completed the pokédex in at least one game in every generation (Though the first two have been done on VBA so I don't lose my saves from internal battery death).
Seeing that the open beta is being released in December has made me very excited, and I feel I'll be active (hopefully) in the lead up to the release.
I think that's all from me for now. Thanks for reading.
Regards,
