Title: Starter Pokemon... Do you always use them forever?
Post by: Pubbles on September 03, 2010, 07:11:16 PM
I've always seen a lot of... Well, interest and hype about which starter is better and who likes them most, etc...

But I've always found it somewhat difficult to include the Starters in any of my past Teams for many reasons or their types (be they single or dual type). Personally, I like to keep them as long as I can as a part of my active team... But it's mainly for sentimental reasons and not preference, with the exception of very few starters. Even then it's because some have a great use further on as Dual types or with necessary strong attacks/uses...

So, the question is...

Do you always include your Starter as a major part of your team?
or
Do you switch them out for something you feel is more useful (either in battle or for RP)?

Well, I use all the pokemon I catch at first until they hit the maximum level. Once they got there, I try to find other pokemon, those which I'm not familiar with. At other times, I breed the pokemon I kept and try to get one with better stats and train it though all over again. :)

I pretty much always keep my starter pokemon in my party and i'll admit that it is due, in part, to sentimental reasons. In fact i get so attached to my starter that i feel guilty if i leave them out (except pikachu, i've never had this problem with pokemon yellow)

I always keep my starter and I it's usually the highest leveled pokemon.

Always keep my starter,  they grow so fast and always obey me.  Plus they are generally stronger than most Poke'Mon.

I always stayed with my Sceptile from Sapphire version and passed it on to Emerald then Diamond and Finally Platinum, now Im waiting for x-mas to get both HG and SS and pass on Sceptile, but I just don't know what will happen onced Black and White comes out =\ ...

anyway thing is I always stick with my starter no matter what.. but I also have some other pokemons i've keep since Sapphire and still have them like Irongross (Metagross).. and no I never leave either Scepty or Irongross in my box NEVER!!  >.> although onced but it was only to immigrate it to Diamond >.<

I tend to build my team around my starter, so of course I keep it. Starters tend to have relatively good all around stats, and some evolve into types you can't find anywhere else. Charizard is the only nonlegendary fire/flying type, Blaziken and Infernape are the only fire/fighting types in their respective games, ect.
Title: Re: Starter Pokemon... Do you always use them forever?
Post by: Ryan Matthews on September 12, 2010, 12:30:09 AM
Usually I will, since usually they're the strongest Pokémon I have.

The only exception were the Sinnoh games. I immediately stuck my Sinnoh starter in the computer after I caught a Starly and Bidoof... they're just so dumb.

Infernape is basically a rip-off of Blaziken, which was a rip-off of Typhlosion, which was a rip-off of Charizard.

Empoleon, durr... water-type tank? We don't have one of them do we? *stares over towards Blastoise, Feraligatr and Swampert*

And Torterra is just Venusaur's drugged up brother.

For real, yo.
Title: Re: Starter Pokemon... Do you always use them forever?
Post by: Chad29 on September 12, 2010, 01:30:33 AM
Feraligatr isn't a tank, and how are any of the other starters a rip-off of Charizard? None of them are part flying, or lizards, or have anything in common except their main type. I suppose you think all fire types are rip-offs of Charizard because he was the first fire type?
Title: Re: Starter Pokemon... Do you always use them forever?
Post by: boyben10 on September 12, 2010, 05:39:59 AM
If you Ask me, Meganium and Torterra are more rip offs of Venusaur than Fire starters 2-4 were of charizard. they are all reptilian four-legged defensively oriented pokemon.
Title: Re: Starter Pokemon... Do you always use them forever?
Post by: Chad29 on September 12, 2010, 05:43:11 AM
Yeah, that I can see. Sceptile is a reptile as well, but at least he's a speedy and bipedal sweeper.

Though all the fire starters are bipedal. That's something I didn't mention before. I don't really fault Infernape for being the same type as Blaziken, though mostly because I heppen to like him better.
Title: Re: Starter Pokemon... Do you always use them forever?
Post by: Ryan Matthews on September 12, 2010, 12:23:55 PM
You can easily make Feraligatr into a tank.

I just find the fire starters are all mainly offensive, I'd like to see in Black and White a huge ass fire pig that serves as something other than just main offence.

Anyhow, the Sinnoh starters are still awful in my opinion.
Title: Re: Starter Pokemon... Do you always use them forever?
Post by: Chad29 on September 12, 2010, 05:04:01 PM
Fire is supposed to be an offensive element. Is there a media where elements are used, and the fire element controller is the "mighty glacier" or "stone wall" type?

Well, there is that smoking turtle with quite high physical defense, but I just don't see fire as a tanking type.

I like all the fourth generation starters, actually, especially Empoleon. There's only one pokemon line that has more resistances than it does, which makes it easy for him to switch in.

I agree but only for chimchar and puplip, but Torterra is Grass|Ground and learns Earthquake and other ground moves witch defends him from fire pokemons and will destroy a steet type pokemon like Lucario.. for me only Torterra is usefull in the game

Has to be the 1st Generation.
I don't think anything can beat Charmander, Squirtle or Bulbasaur. They rock.

My starter was a major upholder in EVERY gen up until D/P/Pt. Turtwig and Piplup were cool, but I personally hated the other seven pokemon availible from picking your started.
So, to answer the question... If they're cool, which they normally are, then yes.

I mostly keep my starters accept for HG/SS. Once I transferred Leafeon from Platnium, Megamium was sitting in box. But in any other games, I stick with starters, mostly because od the whole sentimantall stuff...
And you know what? I think Piplup isn't bad at all!

Meh, since you can pretty much beat the game with any pokemon, I really just look for cool-nes when choosing my starter. I found Chimchar's evo path, Grotle, Torterra, Empoleon, and whatever stage 2 piplup is to all be rather fugly.

Because his final evo looks cool.

The rock type's evolutions look like the rock version of metagross.

They apparently made a pure electric type with levitate. Also since no known ground types to my knowlege can learn gravity, it could switch into just about any of them.

It's going to be 649 now. Good God.

I can safely say... three Pokémon look appealing to me;

Otter (will definitely be using), rock-Metagross thing, and pseudo-dragon guy.

The green evo path looked fine, the entirety of fire was devoured by fail, and water sucked until stage three, which looked pretty good.
>.< I can't focus... I accidentally fell asleep with my contact in, and now I have a really bad headache.
Title: Re: Starter Pokemon... Do you always use them forever?
Post by: Chad29 on September 17, 2010, 12:15:55 AM
I know that feeling. I wear contacts too.

I too feel the grass line looks fine. The fire starter looks alright, but not the evolutions so much. Plus I'm really turned off by it being part fighting. The second water evolution looks better than the first, but still not impressive. As stated before I do like the final evo, though.

I was looking it over again, and I noticed a water and ghost type. Nice. So all that's really lacking now is a water and fire type which probably won't happen.

It might look something like blue fire or maybe something that is separated by two halves. Sort of a yin/yang creature, except with fire and water instead of light and dark.

I always keep my starter and i always use him/her. I always make my starter the strongest in my team as well. I seem to like water type starters for some reason. Maybe because they learn ice moves(to beat grass of course) and some may learn ground type moves such as earthquake(to beat electric).

<1>Infernape. Fire/Fighting -Vs.- <2>Blaziken, Also Fire/Fighting

Both have their Strengths and weaknesses.

<1> Strengths
Can learn Grass Knot. (a very helpful move)
Close Combat
U-Turn
EarthQuake

<1> Weaknesses
Cannot use Fly-Type moves.
Is more susceptible after CC.

<2> Strengths
Brave Bird
Blaze Kick
Poison Jab (again, useful)

<2> Weaknesses
Cannot learn Grass Knot, harder to defeat Ground or Water types

They arent Copies. Hopefully, Neither will Pokabu.

Yes the movepools and stats are different. that's expected. however, it gets a little old after the third of one single type pops out.

Though honestly we're looking at the third pure water type starter. It's a little less boring, though, because Blastoise has tankish stats, while Feraligatr is a sweeper. Then we have different dual type starters before the next pure water sweeper starter.

Yes I do. The only exception was SS; where I use my Emerald starter. And its still technically my starter, so then it comes down to what your definition of a starter is. They usually have good movepools and growths, as well as it just gains sentimental value over time.

Yeah, apparently the starters have average stats, though :/ I don't get that, because my grovyle could always beat fire-types 5+ levels ahead of him.

Well it depends, at first you're forced to use your starter, so it gets EV's you dont want, so I tend to ditch that one later, but if I can breed it and train it properly, that's another story.
Some starters are cool, usually above average stats, but in PU, starters will be wayyy too common, so I doubt I'll use them lol

I only use my starters as long as I have to. Normally, I make a set on my pearl and swap em to my platinum the moment I have started. Not always though. Mostly use them as HM buckets, especially the water ones.
Except for Blaziken, that was the best damn starter. Shame his speed stat isnt too high, Id use him all the way.

Don't feel bad his speed is covered by his ability to learn moves from almost every type, he is a good sweeper, he is also my favorite gen 3 stater

Most times I do keep my starter on hand, but I usually box it if I find the same type Pokemon with better moves etc.. Like I prefer Sunkern/Sunflora to Meganium because they (Sunkern and Sunflora) can learn Grasswhistle, Leech seed, Leaf storm, including 7 more damage dealing grass moves. While Meganium only learns 4 Grass Type Attack moves; Razor Leaf, Magical Leaf, Petal Dance, Solarbeam. That's why I kept my Sunflora and deposited Meganium in SS.

I remember when I was younger I got my mum to buy one copy of Silver and one copy of Gold just so I could get all 3 starters xD.

i think thats not onli by a sentimental cause you keep it, it is also because at the begining there are not much pokemon to atrap, and you must face a lot of trainers, so you figth with the starter primary because it has an bigger level than the rest of your party from the begining and you try to use it to the hardest figths because of its level. And wen you have the oportunity to catch other pokemons of the same tipe, you have already habituate to your first pokemon, so you dont want to change it

In DPPT, I turned torterra into an HM slave because he's just so freaking ugly.  Other than that, the only time my starter wasn't the highest level in my team was in Ruby, when I had a Kadabra six levels higher for a few weeks. Even then, Grovyle still hit 100 first.

Well, when it comes to training, I try and evenly balance ALL my pokemon, only cause I think it be fair to them.

Though, when it comes to GYMS and such, I usually try and keep my starter in my party, unless I didnt like any of the starters lol, like ruby and sapphire. I hated those starters lmao.

Still, regurdless of if I liked them or not, they were my first in the game, so I usually use their elemental type depending on the battle.
