Title: Americans! READ THIS
Post by: Urmel on November 26, 2009, 12:28:58 AM
So since we're planning on getting a server in the USA to support our big american userbase, we would like to know if most of the Americans on here live on (or closest to) the east coast or the west coast. If you live EXACTLY in the middle then you can just vote what you'd like. Please vote on the poll on this page :D

Carbon -- Added the midwest to the poll. :3

And for the people who DO NOT live in the USA, don't try to be funny just vote on "Neither, I'm not an American"  :-*

Hmm. I live in the Midwest. Get a server in Chicago. It'd be good for central US people. :o

Also, if anyone knows a good and cheap (Dedicated Server) hosting provider please tell us, because we have absolutely no idea what to look for when it comes to USA hosters.  ???

Midwest here, so... Yeah. What Carbon said. A Chicago server.

It'd *possibly* reach both coasts, but... Not sure. I don't know any specifics.

I live in Fairbanks, Alaska, and yes, I do not live in an igloo and ride a polar bear to school. Oh yeah, I live near the west coast.

Well, geographically speaking, a majority of the U.S.A. lives in the *East* side of the country, but you would have to check the statistics of how many people play from what areas, which would include checking ISP zoning to find out where ISP connections come from.

For a west-coast area, here's two:
http://www.pacificrack.com/
and
http://www.webnx.com/

As for the east coast, I haven't a clue.
Thanks,
DJ Spire

Ok thanks, I'll look into those. It's going to depend on how many USA players we got, because we might have to rent 2 servers (if our money allows it ;)). If that's the case I might buy one on the west- and east-coast.

I added the midwest to the poll options. If you live in the midwest, and you voted on either the east, or the west, you are more than welcome to change your vote to the appropriate section of the United States.

Damn, people really need to vote then. If more people vote, we will be able to add servers in the areas that need them the most. Maybe we should set it up as a global announcement? It may attract more people to it that way.

If you don't vote, i'll rent a server in China and'll make it the US server.
Yes, you will be lagging big time.

Oh my, I laughed so hard. xD

I assumed that each server would connect into a pool, kinda like an IRC server. Would be easier when it comes to moderation. However, it could cause problems with traffic and being over crowded. This will be an interesting thing to discuss.

PU has a total of 611 members (and growing), but only 31 have voted? Hmmm..  :-\ Is there a way to get their attention? Perhaps you guys can send them all an email linking them to this thread? I dunno, it sounds like a good idea. I just feel that this is very important and we need everyone to vote.

A server in central U.S. would be best for all of us. The less lag the better.

east cost, best place to put the server because most of the US's population is on the eastern side of the country (and i don't want lag...)

Yeah, that and because the players in the west coast (and central U.S.) don't matter at all and we just HAVE to make sure you don't lag even the slightest bit. You're just that important.

Well we don't really know how bad the lag is when we place a server in the middle. So if anyone has access to a server on which we can test, please contact Urmel or me on IRC (Chat)

XD I gotta friend who needs a project you probable don't want some kid hosting your sites game but he's quite a fine techy. He's the nerd that linked every computer, ps3, printer, cellphone and watch to his home server. lol But I'm just throwing that out there he can give you advise on what to do will your servers if you like it. I talk to him alot in person so I don't have his e-mail but i'll try to get on tomorrow and send his e-mail to one of you GMs. Umm... yeah, ok. o.o'

i still say that the server should be in central area just because it would minimize lag for every1

edit: I am also curious about the GM factor for the american servers any ideas on that?

We don't know if a central server would reduce lag for both sides, maybe it's not playable... We'll never know unless we buy a server there or we get the opportunity to borrow a server to we can test.

You do not need to be smug.
Instead of trying to render images, he can maintain your server and never, hopefully, be out of things too do. I really don't like the rendering farm idea. Hosting a server won't take up so much room or make as big a mess... I hope one of the GMs has AIM, I can get you his AIM now and his e-mail a little later. He is the techy brain not myself so for the sake of pokemon just chat with him. The sooner pokemon is up the better for EVERYONE!! ^^

We don't have AIM, our main way of communication is our IRC channel or e-mail.

OK so is that 100Mbit down, up, or split 50/50. You would need more upload then download of course. I can handle the connections. 50Down 25Up. This works perfect for all the web/game servers i host. ~Mcfly~

100Mbit up & down. We've calculated and if we want to host 1000 players on 1 server we're going to need that 100Mbit.

And besides that, we don't want some home server running our game, we need reliability (power/network outage)

I have to say the I agree with Mr_Dark a home based server wouldn't be the most reliable place for a server as the person who actually runs it could also go and just completely wipe it, then what? Every one on the american server would be sad and I'm sure the developers don't want that

You need someone to explicitly tell you that you have to take this poll seriously? Otherwise you just vote crap, which makes the poll less accurate? Geez.

I am a Canadian But i live in the Gmt eastern time zone I amd next to Ottawa city but live in gatineau which is right next to it. So I and closer to east coast than central geographically.
And voting Neiter makes that less accurate, it should be more like if you dont live in the north american continent. But i play on a lot of USA servers so it don't matter right now....

well sorry if this is off topic but in my opinion a negative karma shouldn't be taken back if the person who gave said poster felt that poster deserved it because the poster just explained or complained about it in some way but again this comment may be completely irrelevant because of the fact that i still have -2 karma ^ ^ but just my 2 cents

We let Carbon test the client from the USA connected to our server in The Netherlands. Our conclusion is that servers in central America will be good enough for both the west and east side.
