Title: [PC] Lord of the Rings Online
Post by: Urmel on September 28, 2010, 04:47:59 PM
This MMORPG recently became free-to-play. You can download it for free and play it for free. Some extras are locked though and you have to pay to get them. However, it's very cheap and it's possible to play the game without them.

The gameplay is similar to games like World of Warcraft: questing, crafting and raiding. The gameworld is huge, looks nice and is fun to travel in. Video of a dungeon run (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKDdEhdbSU8)

The reason I'm posting this is because me and Mr_Dark play it pretty often for some nice entertainment. We will start a guild soon and it would be nice to have members that are also involved with Pokemon Universe! So yeah, totally join us there. We play on the US server Vilya (so EU players; be sure to download the US client if you want to play with us!).

Oh god, the combat noises... I'd have to turn those off. I think I would cry in a raid situation like that. Way too much side noise for my liking. Otherwise, it seems like a decent game. I'll have to look more into it. Honestly, I've been playing games like WoW and FFXI for so long, I might have higher expectations than I should.

So, we'll see.

You don't have to know anything about LOTRO. It's just a LOTRO themed MMO :)

I am curious...

I would like to know what else there is to do in the game aside from fighting?

I get tired of doing the same old thing just running around and beating on things. If there's more to do, I'll give it a go!

You can also craft. E.g. cooking food, farming ingredients, forging weapons etc. It's a nice way to make some coin.

Okay, I'm having a problem.

I created my character, did the beginning quests
but when I'm supposed to follow that dude outside it messes up
I go through the door, and the loading screen comes up,
then it just like, crashes

Anyone know what the problem is?

My computer can run World of Warcraft just fine, so I don't think it's my computer..

P.s. you don't have to greet at the end of every post. We think that is default here at PU :)

Yeah, I restarted it a few times, but still the same thing.
However, my windows updater has some updates for me, so I'm going to go ahead and do that, then hopefully it will work

I'm a minstrel aka healer. The real fun starts at level 20 and higher when you can do dungeons, skirmishes and more challenging quests. Would be nice to have a captain in our group  ;D

Nah 1 main healer and 1 dps/off-healer works very well. At some bosses it's even better with 2 healers. Groups are 6 people instead of WoW's 5, so there's room for that 2nd healer.

No the limit for a fellowship is 6. A kinship (Guild for WoW players) can be like 1500 people.

Solo = 1
Small Fellowship = 3
Fellowship = 6
Raid = max 4 fellowships

----------

oh and my char is a Champion class (off-tank).

Alright.

I'm in.

Right now (have to go to work) I stopped as a Level 6 Lore-Keeper named Keanan.

I forget where I am though.. It just outside the starting area for an Elf... (the option on the top when creating a character, I think... More details later)

So far so good.

I've updated the start post with the people who are playing LOTRO including their in-game character name and class.

Seems like we have enough people to start a kinship, the only thing which is left is for everyone to be online ;)

Anyone started crafting yet?

Quote
Crafting in LotRO is unique. In other MMOGs, a player would simply choose a crafting profession and then proceed with making “stuff”. The profession would come with a basic set of recipes with the number of available recipes (and their complexity) increasing as the player’s crafting level increased. In LotRO, we have the concept of a Vocation which is made up of three Professions.

More info: http://lotro-wiki.com/index.php/Crafting

I've chosen Armsman, so I create weapons :D Since we're going to start a Kinship, it might be nice for everyone to have a different vocation. Like when I'm mining copper/tin/iron I also get gems which can be used by the Tinker vocation (Jeweler). But also looting mobs will get me stuff I can't use because I don't have that profession.

I'm sure there are more vocations who get stuff other vocations can use, so that way we can help each other out. And also, it's a nice way to make some extra money ;)

I'm an explorer. I make light and medium armor, and can also turn raw wood into carved wood (But can't make things out of wood.) I can also collect metals, but I hardly ever do that, as my main focus is crafting armour for myself.

Virtue Traits
Why didn't you add one of the following virtues:

Honesty
+123 Max Power
+270 Armour
+7 Fate

or

Empathy
+430 Amour
+15 Fate
+609 Fear resistance

From what I see you focused on in-battle morale regeneration but think of this, when playing in a fellowship there is always 1 healer (is possible 2).

Race Traits
Looks good

Class Traits
Think you've chosen the most suitable traits here. Lots of aggro generating traits, so the DPS'ers (hunters, rune-keepers) can deal the damage without worrying about getting aggro.

Legendary Traits
Same as above.

+609 Fear resistance

From what I see you focused on in-battle morale regeneration but think of this, when playing in a fellowship there is always 1 healer (is possible 2).

In this case I have focused on Vitality - thus Morale (Health Power).

Code: [Select]
Vitality increases your maximum morale, your out-of-combat morale regeneration, resistances to Wound, Disease, Poison and Shadow effects. It also reduces incoming damage from non-weapon sources like Fire, Frost, and Shadow.
1 point of Vitality = 3 point increase in maximum Morale. 5 point for Guardian and Warden.
1 point of Vitality = 2 point increase in Wound, Disease and Poison resist ratings

And with 'Virtuous Dwarf' as a Race Trait, Loyalty gets increased by 1 (to a stage of maximum 11 instead of 10), meaning that I'll get +33 Vitality. That's 165 to maximum Morale.

I guess that I could use the fear resistance from 'Empathy', but is it worth it?

As goes for power: I don't really need it due to my looping shield threat.
Title: Re: [PC] Lord of the Rings Online
Post by: Mr_Dark on October 07, 2010, 02:23:20 PM
I was more looking at +270 and +430 extra Amour. Since you have constant aggro (thus you receive all the damage) some extra amour points can help dealing with this.

As for fear resistance, that's just extra. But if you get too much fear it eats from your morale.

I started crafting as well. I chose to be a Tinker...

I was not aware that Jewelers created "Runes" though, for Rune Keepers... Idiots.

Anyhow, Tinkers do Jeweling, Prospecting and Cooking...

I haven't gone too far into it, I'm at like 32/200 from where you start. But once I get pretty far I can come up with some nice things.

==========================

Changed vocations to something else! Check the crafting post to find out which.

Before i make a decision to download it, what are everyones opinions on the game, such as gameplay, user freindly, graphics etc etc. I've been on too many MMORPG's which all claimed to be unique, but they all seemed pretty much the same to me, in graphics and gameplay. What makes this game unique, other then it being LOTR?

I'm trying to talk my mom into letting me download lotro. If I had my own computer, I would already be downloading it. Hopefully, she'll let me eventually.
