Title: Pokémon Universe Music
Post by: Hiteryan on January 25, 2010, 03:29:26 PM
Since everyone's looking forward to anything PU, let's assume many of the people here would at least want, for instance, to get a taste of what the music in ths game will be like. I have added a few (just a few) pieces of music that will probably be in the game to my YouTube account. Go check:

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL364095E3344D38CB&feature=plcp

While the full first volume of the álbum isn't available on bandcamp, download a few mp3 tracks by clicking HERE (http://www.last.fm/music/Hiteryan/Pok%C3%A9mon+Universe+Original+Soundtrack+Vol.+1).

Do leave your feedback on this topic or on video comments. And subscribe if you wish, for more songs will be added further.

The music is fully original. However, it has obviously adopted a composition style similar to that of original Pokémon game music composers Jun'ichi Masuda and Go Ichinose, for part of the songs. And the music utilizes some instrument sounds similar to those of the 3rd and 4th generation games, so the resemblance can be deeper, and much more Pokémon-ish!

Enjoy!

Also, in regard of anyone who'd like to compose music for the game, I will give them the same answer I've given to someone else:

"Me and Mr_Dark have very specific ideas in terms of what we want to do for this game. Perhaps about 1/3 of the soundtrack has been composed, and it follows some particular defined leitmotiffs, as well as the composition styles used by original Pokémon game composers Jun'ichi Masuda and Go Ichinose. Also, each piece of music is proccessed through the Gameboy Advance synth, which is a frustrating proccess when things go wrong for no reason, because there's a limit of 5 notes at the same time and there are specific groups of instruments that can be used for one song. I've been composing since like, September 2009, and it still messes me up sometimes.

Nothing against you in particular, you're not the first person to want to collaborate with music for the soundtrack. The only reason we never really defined that nobody else could join the job is because I always tend to think about it from my own perspective of when I discovered PU. But to avoid more situations like this I'll just set the job position as locked.

If you do want any of your music to appear in some form in the game, maybe we could do something about that, I don't know. There have been ideas such as an in-game radio or something, but we have to think that through."

Yeah so I guess people would really like to know what the music's gonna sound like

Since I'm a cool guy

And you deserve it

For a freebie

Here's the full strings section of one of the cave themes of the game. Yay! ^.^

The is a free-trial program called http://www.sibelius.com/ (http://www.sibelius.com/)

If you have the time, you can download it and reproduce the notes onto the bars. CHoose the instrument then listen to it.

I think I'll download it too sometime.

I can read the notes, but I can't get the tune to 'sound' in my head, lol

Thanks for the link ghostman!

I think it would be cool to have someway to put your own music on as certain themes songs, like upload my own song for when battles come up, just an idea

Yeah like be able to set your music for when you enter caves, or are entering a new city that is actually a pretty good idea, but I bet it would be heck for the creators

This game looks great and I can't wait until it comes out!!! But I do have some questions about it if they can be answered. Is it a third person, or first person game? Do you get to pick a starter or do you have to catch the pokemon on your own? Can you play side-by-side with your friends (I'm guessing yes as it is a MMORPG)? Are the pokemon just going to appear or will they be seen from distances and actually be "wild"? If these questions are answered that would be a great help. Thank you

You can't quote me on this, but from what I've been reading...

It's a third person game.
You get a starter. You can check out the starters from this: http://pokemon-universe.com/index.php?action=announcement;aid=2 (http://pokemon-universe.com/index.php?action=announcement;aid=2) thread.

I'm not sure how the pokemon will appear. I assume you'll get them like you do in the games... but I can't be sure.

Back on topic please!

Sitenote; You have to encounter the pokemons (not starters) in the tall grass ingame.

Well. Regarding the custom soundtracks, everyone is obviously able to just mute the game sound and play whatever they want while they're playing the game. This is likely to happen with a few games, for instance, PWO in my opinion, which I got to play a couple of times and the music was just plain...what? :-[ No offense really but that was just plain weak. They were very weak remixes from a few Red/Blue musics.

The music in Pokémon Universe consists of an entirely new and original soundtrack, carefully composed and proccessed in a way that will fit the game and sound just as "Pokémon" as any other original gameboy/DS main series Pokémon game. Everyone who digs the games' music, especially from Ruby/Sapphire, will be pleased with this soundtrack. ^.^

But then again everyone's free to do what they want when playing the game.

I'm looking forward to hear them! I loved all of the different songs in the game, well, not exactly all to be honest, but most of them, especially the remixes. Hearing the new processed ones should be awesome!

I don't understand how people keep on asking if they can put their own music track when they can listen to their music through their computer (eg. media player, or you tube). ::)

Ok I'm not gonna be an asshole and I know you guys wanna listen to something lol.

So I've had this on YouTube and MySpace for a long time and some of you have already listened to it, but many new people around here haven't.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8gBByTisP0

The background music in this video is just one of the route themes from the game. If you've played Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald this will sound very familiar in terms of composition style.

Let me know what you guys think. :)

Title: Re: PU Music Update
Post by: Tymid on February 13, 2010, 03:43:08 AM
For a cave, this sounds good. I was thinking for the first measures of the 4/4, it could be doubled, or surrounded with a repeat bar; starting with the original chord, and slowly adding in the different instrumental parts until the main cave theme is formed, ending in a dissonant chord that sforzandos to a fermata, and then go on with the main theme that can be repeated. (Was looking at the top piece.) HOWEVER, that follows my writing pattern, and could be a little to complex for the mood you're trying to achieve. I may be in the mindset of a theatre production instead of pixels. xD It sounds wonderful, as is. It has a profound sense complicated simplicity, if that makes ANY sense. It really painted a picture for me.

The second piece is just...awesomesauce. I don't think it could be ANY closer to the original melody without being copyright infringement. XD Basically, you did an awesome job. Keep up the good work!
Title: Re: PU Music Update
Post by: Hiteryan on February 15, 2010, 03:24:38 PM
LOL Tymid. Are you into music theory more than I am? XD I never had any music or theory lessons, I just kind of go and compose stuff using my own knowledge and experience so in terms of technical terms and mumbo jumbo you probably are way better than where I stand ;D

But I'm the kind of person who finds that the most I understand things, the less amusing they seem.

Just because of that I might let you have a peek on the actual music. As far as the second one goes, the melody is completely original. I just made it in triplets, used a recurring motiff from the original Pokémon theme for the intro bit and (as I've said a billion times) proccessed the midi through the gameboy advance synth. All that combined just makes it sound like a song ripped off an original game :b
Title: Re: PU Music Update
Post by: Tymid on February 15, 2010, 09:01:20 PM
Really? I'd love to see more of the original manuscript. You're a fantastic writer, so there's not much I can add except for some smoother phrase transitioning and such.

But since you did ask, I'm a music education major, so I am taking music theory classes. xD My ear is what I use to compose, though.

One random question tho, I was curious to know if there was going to be  different music for each building (as there is in routes, cities, and so on) as well or will all of the buildings be subject to a similar score?

Err... all I can say is that in terms of that it will generally follow the same formula of the main series games.

Your music is incredible, Hitey. I've been playing violin for 4 years now, so I know some stuff about music, and it is a lot harder than it looks. Plus, you have to go through everything to make it sound like GBA music. The least I can say is wow.

It's really hard to compose a song like in Nintendo DS pokemon game.
Pokemon is a big big company, and we are just 20 - 30... We need to find a lot of people to help the music composers.

I guess it could be one of the starting towns though, but I can't imagine this in a city similar to Goldenrod etc.
                                               Cheers, Genbor

Yes, much probably for one of the starting towns. You got that right. I got different stuff planned for urban cities planned :3

And thanks for showing me this soundrack, this sounds pretty cool.

Yes I used to love it. Unfortunately they changed it in Dofus 2.0 with a new soundtrack. Still, my favorite among them is Astrub City's Soundtrack.
                                                                       Cheers, Genbor

Ahah. I'm flattered :b

Link repost: Download mp3 files from a few PU music tracks by clicking HERE (http://www.last.fm/music/Hiteryan/Pok%C3%A9mon+Universe+Original+Soundtrack+Vol.+1).

If you guys would like to help out, if you're gonna download the mp3 files and listen to them, it would be a great deal of help to me if you had the last.fm scrobble app or at least some mod to the application you use to listen to music that would scrobble to last.fm, so you could scrobble my tracks, making me somewhat more popular through the complex mechanisms of music listening.

Check this out regarding the scrobbler: http://www.last.fm/download

If you use foobar, grab the audioscrobble plugin somewhere.

Regarding the music, availability for download, I will split it by at least two albums (hopefully not more) so there will be volume 1 and 2. This will make it easier and faster to have the first volume ready. When the first volume is entirely available (it should be pretty much mostly done already, but it can't be made available yet due to the actual progress of the game itself), I will make it available for download on my bandcamp page. Until then, one will have to do with this :) I'll add some more stuff eventually.

*Shameless self-bump to give the impression that there are new things happening in PU by bumping the development forum*

*Double bump because some new people want updates and are not aware that there's a bunch of music available online*

Pokémon Universe Original Soundtrack Vol. 1 will much likely be released shortly after the public beta is released. Yay! :)

I love the music you've created man. It's unique and yet still so very Pokemon-like. Great stuff!  :)
