Title: Best Steel Pokemon
Post by: jshep85 on February 14, 2010, 07:22:40 AM
This cannot be a legendary pokemon, example: Jirachi. Some candidates for this could be Aggron, Metagross, and Skarmory. I have chosen none of these. My selection is steelix because his defense is off the charts, 2nd only to shuckle.Another reason for this pick is when in battle, STEELIX can use screech which lowers the oponents defense, making it easier for STEELIX to defeat the opponent with earthquake, double-edge, or iron tail.Lastly, steel is in his name, therefore making him the clear winner.

It's probably Bronzong tbh.

Post by: jshep85 on February 14, 2010, 08:49:35 AM
I considered Bronzong because he's well rounded and his secondary type is psychic but I consider myself more passive and defensive and since Steelix has the 2nd best defense, I had to pick him.

I kinda like Skarmory, but my fav is Aggron.

IRONic that BRONZ(E)ong can beat STEELix.

I choose Steelix too - not sure if he's the "best" steel-type, I just like him.

Steelix's shortcomings are its low Special Defense and Speed, as well as a really shallow movepool... IMO

I would have to say Metagross. Its a very awesome poke, great typing, a great many sets you can use.

Mawile, because it has those huge pincer horns that just look totally awesome.

I have to say Lucario, although t=before the game came out I never though he would have been steel but hey :S
Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon
Post by: FaridXZA on February 24, 2010, 02:24:11 AM
i would choosed lucario since he's half fighting type, he can take on many pokemon on himself regardless his resistance...
Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon
Post by: Eslin on February 24, 2010, 05:29:33 AM
Lucario actually has a lot to worry about because he is part steel. No good steel moves for STAB either.
Best steel is Magnezone because they can not escape his fury.
Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon
Post by: FaridXZA on February 24, 2010, 06:13:11 AM
well, i agreed lucario has not much steel type moves but it's only for his defense or weakness, not for STAB... his fighting moves is good for STAB isn't it?

Metagross bcuz i owned steelix in a duel with him
Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon
Post by: marijan2 on May 01, 2010, 11:26:39 PM
magnezone because of his mix of electric/steel(12 resistances) + very high sp.att... it is unbeatable unless you have fire or fighter type(ground can be negated with magnet rise), if you dont have one you can just restart the game and weep
Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon
Post by: Raikt on May 02, 2010, 01:07:38 AM
Best at what, really? Bronzong is the best support steel. Aggron is the most powerful steel type, next to Metagross. Skarmory is one of the best walls, and Forretress is one of the best utility 'mons. Scizor even fills a niche as the best revenge killer. Magnezone is the best steel trapper. There are even more than that, I'm sure. Steel is one of the best types period.

My favorite is Jirachi, even though you said no legendaries.

Its not pure steel but i'd say Foretress should stand near the top of the ladder, great addition to any shoddy team and a decent variety in it's movepool.

Offensively; yes, he is pretty weak, though his attack score is enough to warrant Iron Head and Earthquake. He has an amazing Special Defense though.

Metagross is amazing with the Steel Phychic thing going on.
Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon
Post by: Silver on May 15, 2010, 10:04:16 PM
Gonna have to say scizor becasue hes only weak against fire, and resistant to 9 different types, base of 500, so not bad.
Extremely high attack, second highest next to metagross, and can learn x-scizor and iron head naturally, which make him a great sweeper.

So in general, its a great well rounded pokemon that can take out nearly anything quite quickly.

There is one in the RSE series. Go to the route between the Berry Master and the place where you get the pokemon graveyard (Mt. Pyre was it?), and a Cool Trainer should have a Mawile.

Okay, that's freaky. Have you stored every single piece of knowlege about the pokemon games in your head? :O

Post by: Jerry on May 24, 2010, 06:06:09 PM
Uh no, I restarted the game a couple of times, and recently to migrate the Regi-golems into my platinum to get Regigigas and I hate leaving unbeaten trainers around  :P

Nah, I remember it particularly because I was looking for Mawile in my pokedex in early game so that I could have it's location to catch it in Emerald. As soon as I found that trainer, I check my pokedex, but it was not obtainable in Emerald. I had to trade over, which was not possible at that time.

The spikes on its body will conduct electricity... Maybe... I dunno... =3=
Cool though..! :3!
Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon
Post by: Jerry on May 26, 2010, 07:17:47 PM
Lol, Aggron is rock/steel, so it gets x4 damage with fighting and ground (the move types which I consider as very common among competitive battling). From electric though, it gets normal damage, the steel doesn't make it weaker to electricity :)

Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon

Yes... but I think since the only move super effective on electric type pokemon was ground, they tried to limit the super effective coverage of electric type attacks... that's just my opinion.

Best steel type?
skarmory is good. covers his bases with the flying type, but is way weak to fire.
aggron's def is off the charts a lil too. i have one lvl 50 and his def is around 220, so he can take a hit unless the hit is a ground type or fighting type move. in that cases he is pretty much wasted.
personally, i prefer metagross because of the damage he can deal, but if you are looking for a steel type that can cover himself, empoleon is probably what you're looking for

You guys are forgetting about special defense. One it from a special attacker and most of your favorite steel types are done for.
I choose Metagross because it has some of the highest overall stats, and its special defense isn't that low. It is also good in attack, but lacks speed. Other than that, Metagross is a good, powerful Pokemon with a good type.
Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon
Post by: Raikt on June 05, 2010, 12:54:40 PM
As I said earlier, each steel usually has a unique something about them that makes them better than others at a job.

Aggron has an amazing attack stat, and with STAB no-recoil Head Smash, he can really lay down the hurt. Metagross makes an excellent Agility user, having a pretty hefty attack stat underneath him. He can also learn explosion. Steelix makes a very great tank or physical wall. He's also not a half bad Curser, but don't expect it to happen often. Registeel, on the other hand, is a fantastic special wall. Scizor is a beautiful revenge killer with Choice Band STAB Bullet Punch. Bronzong is practically the ultimate utility 'mon. There is not much he can't do.

So, it depends on what you want.

I find it hard to believe that one of someone's favorite types is steel. It has a lot of weaknesses and almost no strengths. I guess the Pokemon that are partly steel type can be pretty good, but steel itself is not.

Steel is easily the most flexible type in the entire game. There is literally not one other type it can be combined with to produce a bad result. Steel / Bug? Scizor. Steel / Psychic? Bronzong and Metagross. Steel / Fire? Heatran. All of those Pokemon are in OU because their typing gives them a huge advantage.

How many Pokemon do you see running around with Flying slapped on and rolling with it? Plus, Steel has the biggest resistance in the entire game. Dragon. Without Steel, Dragon would be such an overcentralising type it would be ridiculous. Not to mention that it can always make good use of its resistances with its hardy defenses.

And the argument for "bad attack" really can't be put on steel. It's put on the BST that GameFreak gave them. Most steel types have a ridiculous attack stat that can't be associated with their secondary typing.

TL;DR, I herd u dun liek steelz. I do, though.

Okay.. I was just mentioning that steel itself was bad. A Pokemon with just a steel type is weak to a few common types. Steel moves are also not good against anything except ice and rock. That's the point I was going for, but you took it above and beyond and now I can't really argue with you.

Metagross is by far the best steel type for me. It's an excellent physical sweeper, and nothing beats pulling the last ditch effort card that is Explosion to wipe the grin off someone's face (Mine doesn't have it though, due to the competitive clauses and such that I think work well for battling).
Scizor also has some competitive worth from what I've tried and seen, even though it's not on any of my teams. Plus, it has one of the cooler designs of the 2nd gen. :D

As for Steelix..... there's much better walls from my experience, I can tell you that. And that's all I can really ever see it being any use for.

I'm surprised so many people are saying Registeel when the first post clearly said no legendary pokemon...

But anyways, my favorite steel pokemon would have to be Forretress. It has solid stats defense wise and can have some pretty good move sets considering the attacks that it learns.

(That, and I'm pretty sure nobody has picked it yet).

Adding the fighting type just adds more weaknesses to Pokemon, and doesn't really add many resistances. However, Lucario does have good stats.

These are all great suggestions. I'm trying to become an amazing Steel trainer.

My fav is Aron, because he is the cutest little thing, until he grows up and rapes your face! "Iron Tail!"

but I guess the best would have to be: Metagross.  Because I think he can levitate, and he has a high SpDe stat to help counter the fire

Aggron is a good steel type. It gets STAB base 150 power head smash with no recoil because of rock head. its only downside is 4x weakness to fighting and ground.
Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon
Post by: Chad29 on August 04, 2010, 05:58:38 PM
There are several good steel types in my opinion. Skarmory has great defense and is a well known physical tank. Bronzong is also an excellent tank. Metagross is a heavy hitter with a priority move that can take a few hits as well.

Scizor is an excellent sweeper that can also tank a bit with its many resistances and recovery through roost. Empoleon has one of the highest number of resistances out there, and also a good movepool.

Steel is a good tough type, and one of my favorites.

Gah, all steel types are batsh*t annoying to fight without water-based attacks! I say Bronzong, only because it was by far the hardest steel type I ever took out.
But if we want to be technical, it would be Arceus as a steel type.
Title: Re: Best Steel Pokemon

Arceus is kind of an exception because it can be any type, but I consider it a normal type because it's the default type.

Listen, as much as I'd love to instigate comraderie with one of the only other people here with a food item as their account name, I need to say:
If you aren't going to elaborate on why you think what you think, you're not being very helpful.
For instance, in my personal experience, I found Bronzong to be a consistently tougher opponent than skarmory. Have I been doing something wrong? If not, it seems to me that Bronzong is better. Is it stats? Move pool? Something else?

Skarmory is just a wall. A thick wall of steel and needles.

A big smelly jerk of a thick wall of steel and needles.

Now now. Don't fault something for being good at what it was designed to do.

Skarmory was designed to be a big smelly jerk of a thick wall of steel and needles?

Scratch out the smelly and jerk part, and yes.

I find that Bronzong would be a much more effective Physical and Special wall if it just had one thing Skarmory did: a reliable healing move. It does have Rest, and Sleep Talk for what that is worth. Still, playing the advocate, Resttalk does have a few advantages.

Roost: Instant healing move. Consistent. It only requires one turn to use. It actually sheds Skarmory's secondary typing. It also only takes up one move slot and leaves a lot of flexibility for move set options.

Resttalk: Instant healing for a full 100% health. Removes all permanent status effects and grants immunity to them. Makes Bronzong extremely durable against a slower team or a team that has been heavily paralyzed. Doesn't need Sleep Talk to work viably.

Moving on past that, however, I still believe Bronzong to be the better wall. Overall, I think it's higher dual tanking ability, amazingly diverse movepool, and sheer unpredictability make him the better candidate. It's also extremely resilient if you have a Wish user on your team.

MAWILE.

Mawile has always been a weird pokemon to me. It's a steel type that looks like a grass type, whose most powerful learned attack is the dark move crunch. Though I haven't really looked at it in a while and it may have learned a move more powerful than crunch by now.

Yeah. It's a weird one. I just love how cute it is though!
...huge monstrous jaws are cute, right?

Anyway, mine - on Platinum - knew Steel Head, Crunch, Brick Break and Swords Dance.
Probably the weakest Pokémon I had, but it wasn't bad at all. Just all my other Pokémon were God-like.

I rest my case. Mawile is the best Steel-type Pokémon.

Oh, also, it's the only non-legendary steel-type Pokémon so far.

When Black and White come, that stupid double-gear Pokémon will also be a pure steel-type.

That double gear pokemon makes me think it's the gen V version of Magnemite. You know how Gamefreak likes to come up with new versions of older generation pokemon to pad out the numbers.

...oh.
Yeah, but Venusaur is cool and torterra sucks.
Venasuar is my badass grandpa, but also has a flower on his back, making him that much more awesome.
Torterra looks like Venasuar's retarded brother.
Anyway, I change my mind. The best steel type is definitely a FEMALE probopass.

I'm curious.
Why "FEMALE"?

Think about it. What's the one thing probopass has that nosepass doesn't. Here's a hint: It's right under the nose, and the female has it, too.

The flower on Venasaur's back does look better than the tree and what looks like a mountain on Torterra's back. I think grass and ground is an interesting combination, though. Plus wood hammer and earthquake make him a hard hitting pokemon.

Probably one of the most obvious instances of just reusing the same pokemon idea is the trio of Persian, Delcatty, and Purugly. Did we really need three normal type felines?

Oh, also, it's the only non-legendary steel-type Pokémon so far.

There are only five Legendary Steel Pokemon in the games: Registeel, Jirachi, Dialga, Heatran, and Arceus holding a Steel Plate. The rest are not Legendary.

well, if I had to be obsessed by spelling, 'S', 'D' and 'D' in stupid, don't and dumb respectively should be in small letters and not capital letters...

Just saying...

I still think that Lucario and Metagross are the best steel type pokemons though...
