Title: Paperdoll Competition
Post by: Bryan on May 10, 2012, 01:59:17 AM
Alright, most of what is going to be shown has not been seen by the community and some staff. There are a lot of things and developments in the art department, that will be released in small segments. The purpose of this competition is to lower my work load and get the community more involved. I think this should be in announcements, but I'll let the big guys figure that out. Now let me get to it.

I'm going to release the male sprite in this thread, and allow the community to paperdoll them. There are 12 positions, at the moment, that need to be paperdolled. The rules are simple, as followed:

- You will only be allowed one entry. You may substitute an old entry for a new one.

- You may use any palette, but it will be judged on how well it blends, creativity, and uniqueness.

- Try to stick to 3-4 shades of one color. You can use as many colors you want.

- You will have two weeks to create a fully paperdolled male sprite. Then a community poll will began. The top three entries at the end of the one week poll, will then be sent to the staff to make the final decision, and the winner "could possibly" have a position in the art department as a Paperdoll Artist.

If you have any questions, then post here or send me a PM.

Seems pretty awesome in my opinion.
They will add their own ideas for appearence and give inspiration for clothes/accessories/etc. :)
I'll give it a try.

Nice idea getting the community involved. I  might also try it, but once i fail at what I'm planning, that's when i'm gonna re-realise how much i fail at art ;D

Paper doll artist as in creating the different layers to fit on the sprite?

Anyway, for the contest itself, does that mean that contestants will have to post the 'accessory' layer separately? Or maybe it'd be best to have one picture of the 'accessories' on the sprite, and one picture of the accessories alone?

Great idea. I hope our community comes up with some unique and awesome ideas.

I've added a link in the start post which will show you out of which different parts our characters exists.

Ah yes you're right. That example is from the old character which had the eyes on by default. But with this one, be sure to include the eyes :P

Even if you have no artistic ability what so ever, you can still participate. It's fun, and to see what everyone comes up with. It doesn't even have to be good, its the creativeness and how unique it is. I can always fix up whatever entries players submit. So think of it as a creativity challenge.

We also have eight(?) differently colored eyes, I'll get a image up here soon so players can see the eye placement. Also, if you want, you don't have too; but I'll separate the images from each other.

You have til May 25th to have your entry completed, before the poll begins. Good luck, and have fun with it. Staff my edit my post if anything needs changing.

Because the hardest part is organizing the pixels on the worksheet. Bryan did the hardest part...Now it's like a dress-up game.

Hey all,

As I joined PU as software developer I actually love to do also different things. So last week I installed GIMP to do some pixel art for fun, but GIMP has too many functions which I can't handle! So now I tried paint, which is easier to understand (for me at least)!

I've just uploaded a WIP already, just the hair is done. Tell me what you think :)

The eyes on your side views need to come back a bit. 1-2 pixels. I can't remember what it was. I'll get a sprite sheet with the eyes on it. The hair looks sweet, is it a mullet?

Yeah, I had to find a solution for the eyes myself, but I will change it in the next version. The hair is indeed a sort of a mullet, thought that would be funny.

It's because your saving your image as a .jpg. Need to save it as either a .png or .gif. I would say .png because .gif is used more for animations.

Also, I will be giving feedback to everyones work when I get off work.

Wow some nice entries already! Trying to work a bit on my paperdoll this weekend. But what DragonOfSky mentioned, what to do with shoes?

I've also some feedback:

@DragonOfSky: Yours is great already, try to add the eyes. Not looking that difficult though, but that actually doesnt really matter. Maybe the hair on the side views should be longer to the ears, because it isn't matching the front/back views. Also the lighting on the side views hair is in my opinion a bit to low, should be a few pixels higher. The outfit is great, I like the kind of bag. Also some pixels are from the template underwear, maybe you can fix that too? Nice job.

@lubbies: Also very nice, but maybe also like DragonOfSky a little bit basic. I don't really like the shadowing/highlighting of the body, because it's just an inline stroke. And for the looks, maybe you could try a bit fancier outfit?

@Meowth: This one's kinda weird, I don't get if the head contains hair or a cap. Or both? I like the idea of covering the eyes, but it isn't worked out that good. It's a nice try, but I think you can make better if you put some more time in it.

Good night!

I made Gangplank from League of Legends with the sprite.

I'm not too happy with how the back and sides of the hat turned out, or the side facial hair, so suggestions to improve are requested.

When did everybody get good at pixel art?

That's the same thing I was thinking. Our pixel skills aren't that good, but if you take into account that we do this for the first time (like lubbies just said), then it's very good! It's pretty easy to create some pixel art, if you have the right inspiration! Choosing the right colors is probably the hardest part.

I think I'll try to make one, seeing as how for once, I have a free weekend.

Edit: I think it turned out pretty well, considering it's my first attempt at pixel art ever. I think it looks more like an NPC more than a main character, but I'm working on one of those...

Everything thing looks great. I had a whole list of criticism for everyone, thought I posted it. But I didnt, iPhones being weird. So now I have to type it all up again. I'm gonna make a few examples myself to get everyone an idea of how things will look and a direction for lighting and what not. Keep up the good work, you can always replace an entry with another if you think its better.

I also think I am going to make a small challenge for the three winners of this competition. :)

I say you should redo the shading a bit. It looks like pillowshading now. (Shading begins dark fromout the outlines and end up lighter in the center.) For myself I'm usually quite bad with male characters since they mainly turn out quite... Gayish. Why would you think I made my male sprite look a bit... Angrily?

Anways, I'm making some progress, although the back of the hair can be done better:

I'm no good at pixeling, so I can't provide constructive criticism. To prove how much I suck, here is what I made this one, hopefully it sucks enough to inspire someone to make it better.

They're his hood, but it doesn't look like one...

I think yours is really good. I'd make the edges around the horns a little darker

GAAAAAAAAH....

That being said... I'm jealous you guys can do this pixel art stuff. Most art I can do is food presentation art. And the model that was from Declan, when i saw it i was thinking this:

Biker + Swimmer(M) =Declan's model

It's not bad, it's vividly imaginative. Gotta know how to think like an artist eh?

@Monzta: Looks great already, don't know what I would change.

@Darkstar64: I had the same idea for the hood, but since it looked like a blob behind his back, I decided to put some lines to set it more apart. You could try it as well.

@Ice Warrior Astral: Maybe make the hair a bit longer or add hair below. Right now it looks bald from behind & sides. Also try adding some shading.

I don't know what is wrong with my shading skills. I just want to know if I got this right with this.

@Ice Warrior Astral: The main problem I see in your shading is Pillow-Shading, meaning that your shading goes from dark to light fromout the outlines this can give a weird effect to how 3d-ish the sprite looks. next to that the sprites going sideways look a bit odd. Although the design is quite fine it looks like they shaved his head from underneath and they stopped at the middle of the headheight making longer hair hang over it. While the front sprite shows some sort of spiky hair texture in the front of his head, while I can't see the spiky hair back in the side sprites. Apart from that the clothes look fine.

@ Monzta: The main outlines of the body are dark to black. Making the helmet with horns' outline stand out being too light for the sprite. you should make the outlines a tad darker. Further it's quite good.

@ Darkstar64: At first I thought those things were supposed to be some sort of earrings. But I reminded myself that earrings should hang on ears, not on the neck and gave myself the idea that it was supposed to be some kind of hoodie. You probably wanted to show us clearly that your design was supposed to have a hoodie but it's should be made a bit flatter. Otherwise I see a hoodie in my mind being supported with iron thread so it stays straight backwards. It doesn't mind if the hoodie can't be seen properly in the front sprite. In the side- and backsprites you can show it some more. Next to that I really like the design of the sprite so far.

@ Lubbies: Just as I trold Astral, the hair has pillow shading making it look a bit odd. Also the trenchcoat seems to be lacking shading. and you shouldn't use pitchblack as part of the shading.

Darkstar, you should kind of make the hood wider and make it join the shirt by making the separation lines much lighter, or just delete them altogether. Look at genbor's sprite, for example, the hood blends in perfectly.( If that even is a hood :P )

I use paint to do all my pixel art. I use Photoshop to set transparency for my art, and to set the file type. .png is best. .bmp and .gif are okay. Don't use .jpeg or .jpg please.

Another program you can check out is GIMP. Just google it. I dont't use it, but it has a lot of features that are helpful while doing pixel art.
Title: Re: Paperdoll Competition

I use either Paint or GIMP. Although I like paint more since GIMP is sensitive to the pressure on my Pentablet when I use it. Not that I use my tablet often for pixelart.

You can do two things at this moment, Fret how much you suck at pixelarting or try to practise. I used to be pretty bad at pixelart. I've been pixelling for quite a long time now.

Sometimes I also feel down when someone's making amazing pixelart, but I'll usually try to turn it into inspiration to become a better pixelartist and is mainly my motivation to keep on trying to make something nice.

A majority of people think pixel art is something you can do real quick or simply don't have the patience to sit there and swap out colors until they get the right match. It's something you develop over years, and takes a quite of bit of time to master.

Here are a few tutorials that helped me out.

http://www.derekyu.com/?page_id=218

http://wwww.drububu.com/tutorial/

http://gas13.ru/v3/tutorials/sywtbapa_almighty_grass_tile.php

http://www.exotica.org.uk/mirrors/gfxzone/articles/goblin_pixelling_tutorial-article.html

http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=922.0

http://mistraal.wordpress.com/2008/04/19/tileset-tutorial-english/

Another thing you could do is use reference pictures to give you idea's. Ive seen, and created, many pixel artists that were not good what so ever, but after time became better than me.

Color is the biggest thing that most amateur artist have trouble with. And something I still struggle with to this day. Even with 13 years under my belt. If you take the time, you could be great; and that is directed to everyone. :) Enjoy.

HURRY LIGHT OUT THAT FIRE ON HIS HEAD!... jks the jacket looks a bit pale on the left of the frontal view 1 and 2 on the side views theres that wierd shininess going around the ear that looks a bit out of place but overall it's great (although could use a little more shading) Not bad for your 2nd try and the eyes dont look right, look at the front page for reference.

Better but still a tiny bit funny. The jackets shades don't meld that well, either find darker colors to suit the outside or lighter ones for the interior, I only noticed this now but the standing back views pants look very strange. The jackets arms look too much like the skin color. I must say though it looks much better. ;)

Ok I edited it again I still see a few things wrong with my pants but didn't notice till after I posted it but yea the most distinct thing you will see I changed is his hair....Lol....I was sitting there thinking what was wrong with this sprite then it hit me....There sure was a crap load of orange on him...Soooooo I changed it :P

Only thing I can comment on is the hair. Try to make the black lining more natural, ex. make it a color that matches the hair.

yeah those black lines are standing out WAY too much. make it a darkish mustard or just take the yellow and darken it so it blends well. Don't make it too dark though.

I wasn't sure about the height of the sideward view so I just did two different heights.
