Title: [RP] Soul Eater: New Earth
Post by: Tickles on February 19, 2015, 09:19:41 PM
BREAKING NEWS

DWMA, a school for meisters and weapons has expanded outward, creating an identical school on a remote island located in the Pacific. The reason: Lord Death has been receiving an extreme amount of  applications in the past few years, and the old school is starting to get crowded. In an interview with the Shinigami, he stated "My establishment has been around for centuries, training warriors to fight the Kishin threat, teaching the three R's: Reaping, Raising, and 'Rithmatic, and above all protecting the lives of mortals across the globe. Death city simply does not have the room to house all of these applicants. That's when it dawned on me. Open a new school! With a new town! And now, six years later we have an exact copy of the city and school."

The school's headmaster will be Carter Faehald along with his weapon Merlin. He had this to say at the grand opening. "I hope to lead our first years into the path of greatness. Though the school may look the same as the former, I plan to take it to greater heights. I have selected an elite group of faculty, all regarded in their fields to take on the task of enlightening these young minds. If any of my potential students are watching, be warned: You have only to realize your true potential. I will see you all soon."

Will the new headmaster be able to live up the the DWMA's reputation? Who will these new students be? We will be watching closely as events progress. Stay tuned!

Plot You will be playing a pair of students (or student if playing a lone weapon) at the new DWMA. Each day you will be dealing with classes, and some nights missions. Your goal is to raise your weapon to death scythe level by collecting 99 kishin eggs, and one witch soul. During your time here, you might see the rise of a greater threat, or you might not.

Rules

All General Role play rules apply to this rp. However, the following rules are necessary for this RP

-You must write a full paragraph per character, or two paragraphs per post. You have two characters, you will be able to achieve this. You will receive three warnings before being kicked from the RP.

-In the case of lone weapons, you must have two lone weapon profiles to adhere to the previous rule.

-You have a maximum of three days to respond to any post. No response after the third day will result in being kicked from the RP. This will be excused so long prior warning is given for any prolonged absence.

-All arguments are settled by the GM. This will be enforced. Further note, all arguments are to be held in the OOC thread of the RP, unless the argument is dialogue by characters.

-Your character has a life in this world. That means maintaining a schedule that makes sense for them and the environment around them. This means READ ALL POSTS IN THE RP. This will prevent confusion for the most part.

-Have fun. Rules are meant to be a framework, but you still have freedom to write in any style you wish.

-Extra thing: Everyone must claim a color to use for dialogue. No copying anyone's color for their own character.

-Mature content is allowed so long as it is not excessive

Side Note

It's been a few years since I hosted an RP, and joined as well. Bear with me, even I can make mistakes.

BladesEdit: Approved.

Rp has started. If ya want to join, there is still room.

Outside of the new DWMA, a large amount of students recently accepted into the school gather around a podium, ready to meet their headmaster and teachers. Carter was preparing mentally behind a curtain set up to hide him from any person that missed his tv news debut.

Carter, how long are you going to keep them waiting?

Just a little longer. Speeches are dreadfully stressful, and I want to make this as perfect as possible.

Well, fine. I'm going to scout the crowd and see if I can fin...

You will do no such thing. I need you to stay here with me. I don't need another mishap this week. I'm still trying to forgive you for the three headed cat running amok in the aquarium.

Merlin laughed at his last venture. The crowd outside waits.

"How long are they going to keep us waiting?"

Alex was toying with the end of her long, braided hair when Jessie spoke. "Hmm?" she asked and looked up at her sister.

Jessie rolled her eyes and sighed briefly. "When are they going to do something? We've been standing here for ages."

"I don't like it any more than you Jessie," she replied and leaned in a bit closer to her, speaking a bit softer now. "You know I don't like crowds."

She smiled and wrapped her arm around Alex. "I know Sis. Tell you what, when we get to our dorm room I'll let you just chill for a bit while I see what's here."

Alex smiled. "Thanks Jessie."

"Anytime."

"Hey Warren, what do you think the new headmaster is like? ...Warren? Hey, are you listening to me?" Silene glanced over at her meister to find him with his hands shoved in his pockets, staring off at nothing. "Hey, wake up you lazy bum!" She shoved him lightly.

Warren barely stumbled, glancing over at Silene through half-lidded eyes. "I dunno, I heard one of them's pretty goofy. Other one's a bit of a hard-ass though, if you believe the word of the street." He slouched, looking back up at the clouds and absent-mindedly chewing on his gum. "Why don't you just chill until they come out to greet us?"

Silene shook her head, bringing her hand away from her mouth to rest at her side. "You're so lazy! Do you get excited about anything?"

He half-grinned in response. "I like blowing things up." Before she could respond, he held out a stick of gum decorated with cartoony skulls."Chew on this, it'll help calm you down."

Silene sighed, then smiled and popped the piece of gum into her mouth. He was right, it really did help.

...Welcome to hell. That's the only thought that persevered through my mind as I walked through here. Guess it's not too far off, huh? The only solace is I'm assured food and 'safe' refuge, but... I don't know. I know it's fear talking, that much is obvious. It's just, I guess I'm not too keen knowing that if I slip up once... Well, I'm gone. Dead. My story's over. I know have Soul Protection, it just... Feels off. It doesn't hurt. But it's almost like a numbing sensation. I know what it's doing; It's suppressing my magic, both causing my soul to appear normal, and locking my abilities down. It even disabled my sense of electricity, though, I have to say, that's actually nice here in the city.

Why... Why are we gathered here, just... Waiting? This is an Academy, shouldn't he be finishing his speech so we can get to 'witch and kishin killing classes' or something? I mean, I don't really want to go to a class about my kin being killed, but if I'm here I want to learn damn it... Guess I'll go find my partner, see what he's up to, huh?

Steven

Steven was near the back of the crowd, a bit ironic since he had shown up fairly early. That was... Out of character for him, he was never one to get places early, but, circumstances can change when you can't sleep. It wasn't the atmosphere, it wasn't the lack of warmth from cats, no, that had already worn off, after all, they had been there for about a week at this point. What had gotten to him, and was causing him to cease sleeping, was that he was genuinely nervous, unsure as to if he would be able to make it here, that, is what kept him awake at night, and was currently eating away at him.

However, I wouldn't say he really looked nervous. No, I'd say quite the opposite, as he looked rather excited, like he couldn't wait for it to get started. This was exactly like him, wasn't it? To never show the fact that he was terrified, or that something was bothering him. Hell, if it got too bad, he'd just run away, like he always did. Either way, he would soon lose any opportunity to run, as his partner had approached him, speaking shockingly calm, and laying out her thoughts and points with ease... Jeez, how was she not nervous?!  "Hey, Steven. I figure since we're partners, maybe we should travel together, don't want you running away after all. Also. Heard anything about the guys who run this place? I've not heard much, but you're bound to have heard something."

Shit, she had him. He had his chance, and didn't take it, and was sure to pay for it now. "Yeah, I've heard some stuff. A little bird told me one of them was pretty chill, possibly even as relaxed as I am. The other... Not sure on him. Word is, he's strict as hell, not really looking forward to meeting him, to be honest."

The girl merely smirked at the first, however she didn't refrain from voicing her opinion on the second, her voice having a hint of... Actually, he wasn't sure what it was a hint of. It was like... Anger? No, that wasn't it... It was like, Sarcasm, detest, and disappointment all had a baby. That was her tone, at least from his point of view, though, he wasn't sure he understood why her tone was that. "Ah... I hope he's not too bad, or else I'll have to be right there with you in not wanting to meet him."

Carter stood up finally, ready to give his speech. He had the focus of a thousand warriors in his mind. He stepped out and looked upon the students, the crowd silencing once they seen him. Just beside him appeared Merlin, and some cloaked figure. Carter stepped up to the podium.

"Greeting students of NDWMA. I am Carter Feahald. It is my pleasure to welcome you to the opening ceremony, and out very first day of classes. I am sure there are bright minds and powerful warriors waiting to be realized among you. When Lord Death asked me personally to take on the role as headmaster, of course I couldn't refuse. I, as well as the faculty, have one mission in mind: Use any methods necessary to make you the top meisters and weapons in the world.

Each day you will be attending your respectful classes, and each night take on a mission to test your abilities, as well as acquire the necessary kishin eggs for weapon growth. These in combination with our new worldwide transport system should ease the tediousness of travelling between the island and the outside world.

Now, I know you have all heard some rumors about how I plan to use unconventional methods to train you guys. I assure you, these rumors are true. I ask nothing but near perfection from all of you. Anyone not willing to make the cut will simply be expelled. I will not accept any excuses. You will work until you break past your potential.

As for the staff, all of the faculty have been hand picked for their various skills. All are highly regarded meisters and weapons, some of which have agreed to forsake pay in the name of molding young minds for a greater cause. I have also taken the liberty of matching each and every one of you to a specific instructor, one who I feel is the best to unlock your true nature. If there are any arguments about your instructor, rest assured, I have a backup who would be more than willing to train you."

The cloaked figure seemed to perk up at the sound of that statement.

"Now to conclude this speech, and before I keep you any longer, I want everyone to report to their assigned classroom in the next fifteen minutes. Any lateness will result in punishment. Have a pleasant day, and make me proud."

Carter left the podium. There were barely any applause, let alone a golf clap.

(The players will be in Mortecai and Archie's Class.)

It seemed Jessie dozed off on Alex's shoulder, who wasn't paying much attention herself. She elbowed her sister in the ribs when the crowd began to rustle. "Looks like we're moving."

"What? Did I miss something?" She scanned the people around her.

"Yeah, there was a big speech or something I think."

"What did he say?"

"I dunno."

"Uhh . . . crap. What do we do?" She tapped a black-haired boy on the shoulder, who barely stopped to look up at her. "What did the guy giving the speech say? I wasn't paying attention."

"Get to class," he said and hurried off with the crowd.

"He sounded pleasant," Alex said sarcastically.

"Hmmph. I hope everyone else isn't like that." Jessie shrugged. "I guess we should get going."

Alex nodded and let Jessie lead, shoving her way through the crowd in their effort to get to class.

"Hey Alex," she hollered over her shoulder.

"Yeah?"

"Where's our class?"

"I thought you knew."

"Have I ever been good with directions?"

"Have I ever been much better?"

Jessie let out a heavy sigh. "We're going to be in so much trouble . . ."

As the headmaster and his band of goons... Is it proper to call them goons? I mean, they work for him, b-Ah, y'know what? Screw it. All that's important is that they left, and because they left, all the students, including me, had began to walk to our respective classes. Though, I guess I wasn't fast enough huh? As I walked, I noticed Steven was already ahead of me, staring at a piece of paper as he walked, as if squinting at the paper in disbelief. Naturally, I followed behind him, not even bothering to look at my schedule. After all, it was obvious that a Meister and their Weapon would most likely be in the same classes, right?

As we walked through the hall, and neared our class, I noticed a sign on the door as we entered class... And in that moment, I felt all hope I had towards this not being true hell be crushed, ran over, stomped on, and for good measure, fed to the vultures. The name was so outrageous, that it even caused me to read the piece of paper we had been given for our schedules, and it was there. 'Mortecai's class of awesomeness. Any arguments will result in pain.' The time we had this class for didn't help either. I mean, this was our only class, but... Six hours? Seriously? The teacher better be damn good at his job. As I took a seat beside Steven, stuffing the note in my coat, I noticed that the teacher wasn't even here yet, so I couldn't even try to draw a conclusion of how this would be off of their appearance.

Steven

Steven was among the first to leave, and take off towards his first, and only, class. The look on his face when he read his schedule was priceless, as he was squinting at it almost the entire way as he walk. He noticed something as he walked, something that intrigued him. The entire school was built slick and nice, and everything looked so... New. It was entirely different from what he was used to, and while it did intimidate him, it was also rather interesting and exciting for him.

As he entered the class, about six minutes to spare, there was somewhat of a smirk upon his face, masking the fact that he was terrified. The name had shocked him at first, but he had figured the teacher couldn't be too bad. I mean, the name was interesting, so maybe they had a sense of humor. Steven watched as his partner walked into the room, taking a spot beside him. He began to speak, but quickly stopped himself, noticing the fact that she seemed... Pissed off. Was it the name? It had to be the name... Or was it the fact that they had a single, six hour class? Truly, he would never know, as she quite obviously wasn't in the mood for a conversation.

Warren's jaw dropped, his wad of gum falling onto the cement below with a 'splat'. "A mission every night? Are you fuc-"

He was cut off violently as Silene grabbed him by the wrist, pulling him towards the school. Her face was buried in a crinkled paper, but somehow she still navigated the crowd. "Come on, we have to get to class! It says here our first class is..." She suddenly jerked to a halt and the paper fell from her hand, drifting to the ground a few feet away. "... That's terrifying."

Warren shook himself free of her grip, walking over and picking up the discarded paper. Blowing a strand of stray hair out of his eyes, he glanced over it. In big, bold letters it read 'MORTECAI'S CLASS OF AWESOME: ANY ARGUMENTS WILL RESULT IN PAIN'. "I say we go hom-"

"Warren!"

"Fine, lets just get to class. It can't be that bad."

Following the map on the back of their schedule, they made it to class pretty fast. Surprisingly, it was nearly empty. The pair took their seat at the front of the class. This was going to be interesting.

Time passed, and the bell rang. The students were waiting for their teacher to come in. Five minutes passed, and everyone was into a conversation, introducing themselves top each other, showing off their weapons. Then they heard a noise outside the door.

WHO THE FUCK LOCKED THIS DOOR

A loud thud was heard, and the door was launched across the room, through the window. A thin man wearing and blue bandana with an eye on it, and a really large man wearing full armor walked in.

Ok, I'm going to ask you little bitches once. Who in their now shortened life locked my damn door?

The entire room pointed to the kid on the corner of the class, closest to the door. Mortecai walked up to the kid, and choke slammed him through the desk.

You, maintenance, tonight. Report to the lab when class is through you little zit faced, no dick bastard.

Mortecai walked up to the board, and wrote in large letters 'ANY AND ALL STUDENTS IN MY CLASS SHALL NOT LOCK ME OUT! Also, THIS IS MY CLASS!'

Hello victims, my name is Mortecai, and this large man is Archie. We're your instructors. Now, I know that hardass Carter might have tried to scare you about who we are and what we do, but let me tell you one thing. Ain't no one in the world scarier than me. Got it? Good. Now, I don't want to hear your names, I don't want beginning of the year horseshit introductions. Instead, you're going to show me what you got. Now, follow me through this door. You're all getting your first kishin egg today. You have the whole class to kill the kishin you choose. Why am I telling you this now? Cause it's better to just tell you that half of you are going to fucking die. I'm not kidding. It took me a week to collect all of these things, and most of yesterday to get them in their boxes."

Mortecai opened a second door that led to a large field. On it were strong looking boxes, neatly in a row.

Here's how it's gonna work. You will take a key from that table, and go to a box. All the keys open all of the boxes. The kishin that pops out is your target. You are not allowed to attack your classmate's kishin under any circumstances, even if they are about to die. You do that, I kill you myself. And if none of you believe me, ask sleepy currently napping in his desk.

Mortecai gave the signal to go.

Last thing, I will be evaluating you all during this. Have fun.

Silene stared at the wreckage where the boy had been slammed through the desk, slightly concerned. "Is he alright?" The wood had been completely shattered, and she hadn't seen the kid move since it happened. She hoped he was just unconscious, he hadn't even done anything.

"Probably." Warren shrugged, popping a fresh piece of gum into his mouth, still sitting at his desk and listening to the teacher lecture about collecting kishin eggs. "I don't see why he bothered rounding them up, seems like too much effort." As the instructions drew to a close, he slowly rose to his feet."Lets get down there and get this over with."

"Oh, so now you're eager to work?"

Warren nodded in turn, eyes glinting darkly. "I'm not gonna work,." His wavelength suddenly took a darker, more violent vibe. "I'm gonna blow it to smithereens."

Silene laid a firm hand on his shoulder. "Warren..." Through their connection she felt the tempo of his wavelength slowly lull back into its normal tempo. "You okay?"

"Yeah, I've got it. Hurry up and transform, before we get called out." Warren held out his hand. In a flash of blue light she changed into her scythe form. Warren spun her expertly, kicking up a small gust of wind around him. The familiar feel of her soul pushed back the last of his clouded thoughts, leaving his mind completely clear. He selected a cage at random and took his place in front of it.

"Be careful, Warren."

"Will do."

"ShIt ShIt  ShIt ShIt ShIt..."

"We're going to be fine Jessie-"

"We're going to be late!"

Alex grabbed her sister by the wrist and brought the two to a stop in the middle of the empty hallway. "Look at me. We're going to be fine, trust me. Remember what the guy said?"

Jessie was bent over trying to catch her breath. She may be a demon weapon, but even she needs to stop running once in a while. "N-no."

"Of course not. He told us that there's always someone who shows up late to class - just like school at home - but Mortecai is one of the best teachers here." She gave Jessie a comforting smile. "We'll just explain to him that we got lost, we're really sorry and stuff, and we'll never do it again and he'll let us off the hook!"

Jessie smiled back. "Yeah. Yeah, we will be fine. But it doesn't mean I like being late."

"Same. Now let's get going."

And the two resumed their jog - which was faster than the average human's sprint.

---

"Why is this school so fucking huge?!?" Jessie asked the air like it actually cared.

"Look, there's the class!"

The two came to a stop beside an empty doorway.

"Where's the door?"

Alex shrugged. "Hmm, Mortecai's Class Of-"

Jessie grabbed Alex by the wrist and pulled her through the doorway. "Doesn't matter, this is his class. Hi Mister Mortecai! Sorry we're late!" she yelled as they entered the classroom.

I had been staring my schedule, when I heard a loud voice echo out. I looked up just in time to see a door fly off its hinges, hit the ceiling, and even slam through it. I even heard an audible 'OW' from the room above me... This would be interesting, or so, I thought. Sure I was right, It was interesting, however not in the way I had wanted. I had watched two people walk in; A shorter man, and a taller man, however, the mannerisms, look, and even... No, especially the speech patterns of the shorter, thin man who walked in made me uneasy. He immediately asked who locked the door, to which we pointed at a kid in the corner, who thought it would be funny to do so.  I felt my heart skip a beat when the instructor slammed the child's face through the desk... Did he kill the kid?

Not really wanting to find out for myself, I simply sat there, silent as he explained what we would be doing. It seemed we would be getting our first Kishin egg, and I noticed that Steven, who was beside me, was noticeably tense. It was only natural for him, wasn't it? After all he's shown me time after time that he's a bit of a coward, and I would be throwing him at our enemy for half of this. I couldn't help but grow a somewhat soft smile. Sure, this was going to be terrifying, it would hurt, and I could even possibly die here... But, it would quite interesting, would it not?

When the instructor gave us the signal to go ahead, I arose from my seat, nudging Steven as to get him to follow, which he did, though, I have wonder if it was willingness or fear that drove him to follow? After all, I'm sure he wasn't too keen on this situation. As we took a key, I motioned towards the field, speaking as so.
"Go pick a box, and then transform when I get there. Alright?"

His response wasn't verbal, which I found rather odd for him. He was really tense, wasn't he? I mean, I guess he did follow my instructions, but it's unlike him not to comment with sarcasm. As he picked a box,  I began to carefully select a key. Sure, he said they were all the same, and would open any box, but I at least had to check and make sure they were similar in nature. I picked up the key in my left hand, before walking towards the field, to the box Steven was standing in front of.

When I got there, like I had instructed him to do, he transformed without a word, the hilt of the weapon appearing in my hand. The chain was limp, and the large chakram was laying upon the ground, waiting for me to sling it into the air, and at my opponent. I stuck the key into the slot, but, before I could turn it, I heard an audible voice from my weapon.
"Hey, be careful when swinging me at them, alright?

My response was quick, and had a hint of sarcasm in my voice. He knew I would take as much care as I could, but hey! I should have fun with this.
"I wont." And with that, I turned the key, quickly stepping back and dragging the chakram back as I began to await the box's inevitable burst.

Steven

He felt... Tense. The teacher hadn't even walked in yet, and he was already tense. The door flying off of it's hinges and going through the ceiling didn't help either. He watched the instructor intently, pointing at the kid who had locked the door when it was questioned, however, he couldn't expect what would happen next. He tensed up as the other, around the same age as him, was thrust through his desk, breaking the wood into thousands of pieces. He couldn't help but wonder if the kid was alive but... He wasn't going to say anything and risk the same fate.

Steven tried to fake a smile, however it quickly left his face as he realized what the instructor was... Well, instructing them to do. He knew it was going to happen when they signed up for it, but he still wasn't sure if he and Hason would be able to do it... But hey, he couldn't really run right now, so what could he do but obey? As his Meister nudged him, he quickly got up, following her over to the table with the keys, where she began to speak, a monotone voice coming from her. Ah, she was back to normal now, wasn't she? "Go pick a box, and transform when I get there. Alright?"

He simply nodded, following her orders and going towards a box. He felt his heart begin to pound, nearly bursting from his chest as he stood in front of one of the boxes. He wanted to run... He needed to run, but he couldn't very well do that, could he? So he simply waited. When Hason neared him, he quietly transformed in a flash of light, turning into his weapon form, having the hilt appear in her free hand. Before she could even open the cage, he spoke, a bit of a cautious tone to his voice.  "Hey, be careful when swinging me at them, alright?

However, her reply didn't exactly reassure him. As she turned the key and quickly stepped a few feet back, awaiting the contents of the box to make themselves known, she spoke in a sarcastic tone that made even him uneasy. "I wont."

Mortecai heard a voice behind him.

Did you really have the balls to come in the class late? And did you really think apologizing was going to save your sorry ass life today.

Mortecai walked up to the two girls, grabbed the two by the hair, and dragged them to the field. He flung them as hard as he could, and dual missile kicked them each right in the face. He then spoke, with pure rage.

YOU TWO. KEY. BOX. MAINTENANCE. LAB. KAPISH?

All of the students are lined up at their boxes. With a simultaneous turn of the key, every kishin came flying out.

Well children, you get to fight the most evil people in all of history. Have fun.

@Blades

Hitler, wearing what looked like a mech suit powered by souls. "ACH, YOU HAVE ANGERED ME, ZE GREAT HITLER!" He armed his cannon, and fired at the two battlers. He knew that if he tried to do anything else, he would come after them instead.

@Lunartic

Out of the box came Mussolini. "In all of great Italy, I shall turn you into my new pasta." He pulled out twin blades, which were attached to his arms. He was fast, really fast, He zeroed in on the one who opened his box.

@Desbear

Stalin, in an iron suit with red fists, came exploding out of the box once he heard the key turn. "By Mother Russia, all this school will bend to.." he looked at Moretecai, who was thrusting the air and pointing. "Nevermind, I shall kill you for my freedom. RED FIST" He let loose a massive punch.

Warren whirled the scythe around, bringing the blade up and slicing straight through the missile. The two halves split off, flying to the left an right of the meister, destroying two chunks of grass behind him. "... That's all zhe great Hitler's got? I'll show you a real explosion. Silene!"

"Right!"

Warren pumped his wavelength through her, channeling it around the point of the scythe. He dashed forward, swinging the strike at Hitler's side.

"Explosion point!"

The fuck? I'm fighting Stalin? This... Just got weird. As the iron communist finished speaking, he immediately rushed at us, attempting to punch us. I... Regret not being ready, as I may have been able to prevent him swinging in the first place, but hey? First time. I immediately dropped the key, and jumped to the left, whipping the hilt of the weapon back behind myself, the chakram blade beginning to rotate counter-clockwise, at impressive speed. As I landed, I ceased movement, whipping the chain, and the chakram around myself and towards the kishin egg.

". . . yes?"

Wrong answer.

"Ow ow ow OW OW OW! Jesus CHRIST that hurt!" She rubbed her head and tenderly pulled loose hairs away when she turned around. "Was that really necessary?" Apparently it wasn't enough either, because the next thing Jessie knew she was on her back and five feet behind her.

Alex didn't fare much better. Her feral scream sent chills down Jessie's spine. It reminded her of the day they . . . did something she would rather not reminisce over. It coincidentally stopped when he kicked her in the face.

"Alex . . . Alex, are you alright? Oh my fucking nose..."

She grunted.

"Yeah . . . maintenance, what the fuck is maintenance?

Alex stood up - eventually - and helped up her sister. "Doesn't matter, let's just get this over with. Go get the key."

The tone in her sister's voice made Jessie shudder. She never spoke like that, not to her, not to their parents, only once when . . .

"Key Jessica."

"Yeah, I-I'm going." She fought to keep her hand from shaking. Alex looked no worse than her - hair misplaced, bloody nose, lowered eyes - but Jessie knew how well her sister could hide her emotions. Most people would think she simply shrugged it off as best as she could. Jessie was scared.

Alex crossed her arms. "Everyone else is getting some crazy person from their box. You go open ours then come to me and transform."

"Why do I have to do it?" she asked.

Alex her sister in the eyes.

"I'll open the box," she said quickly. "Okay, just put in the key, open the box, turn around and run," she whispered under her breath. "Oh god I don't want to die oh god oh god oh god..." The key slipped into the box and turned easily, with Jessie standing as far as humanly possible from the box. The lock clicked and an angry, Italian, iron-clad man leaped out. Without second thought, Jessie turned and flew across the field, leaping at Alex and transforming mid-air.

Alex caught the slender bow and drew an arrow, lining up a perfect shot. If the great general of war hadn't screamed at her, she would have fired at the other maniac without a second thought.

@ Blades

Hitler blinked as his missile basically became a two front explosion. His thoughts were interrupted as a scythe barely missed him due to his dodge, hitting the ground. "You missed me Fraulein." An explosion erupted under him, launching him in the air. "Deus ex machine. Look it up. Hitler always has a plan." His jet pack activated, and he let out a missile volley at his target.

@Desbear
Stalin grabbed the chain, and pulled as hard as he could, bringing the meister to him. "Checkmate. My manly fist will hit you, one way or another." His fist flashed, and a large amount of fire was around it. He was going to end it here.

@Lunartic

Mussolini burrowed underground, and came up under the archer. "I see London, I see France"  He took a massive swipe, cutting the area around them, trying to bring them underground.

One of the fighters attempted to run away past Mortecai.

Nope!

A loud smack was heard. Everyone, kishin and fighter looked at the area the sound came from as the meister flew across the field. All they seen was Mortecai zipping his fly back up. With the happiest smile on his face.

Long John Masterbomb says you have to go to maintenance.

Mortecai turned into a hammer, and Archie grabbed hold, killing the kishin that the runner was trying to escape. Mortecai greedily ate the soul that popped out, having stayed half transformed into a hammer.

Warren twirled the scythe in front of him, catching the volley of explosions. It pushed him back several feet, his heels digging into the ground, smoke drifting off his clothes. "Now that's more like it!" He swung his partner toward the ground, using her as a pole vault to sling himself higher up. Halfway through the air, his train of thought was lost completely.

Nope! Long John Masterbomb says you have to go to maintenance.

For a second he blanked out and it looked like he was going to collide with Hitler full force, but at the last instant he brought the scythe around to slice at the kishin egg's jetpack.

Well then... Gonna have to play this a little differently, aren't I? As he pulled on Steven's chain, I felt myself get pulled towards the Iron Fist... Heh, this'll be interesting. As the gap was quickly closed, I felt a power rise up in me... I guess I gave in. I threw all caution to the wind, and disabled Soul Protection. It was time to go fish. I reared back my right fist, what seemed to be the maw of a shark opened up around my fist. I swung my fist towards the iron fist, attempting to meet his fire with my water... Damn, if this doesn't work, it's gonna suck.

Alex ran toward the kishin egg, leaping before the ground fell beneath her and landing on his shoulders. She aimed the bow between her eggs, the arrow poised to fire into the man’s skull. ”I see a dead Blackshirt.” Her fingers were about to release when a loud smack resonated across the field. On one side was a rather limp meister, on the other a rather proud Mortecai. Between them was utter stillness. And something about maintenance. Using the distraction to her advantage, Alex cut the silence like a knife as her bow let out a satisfying thwump. She leaped forward, behind Mussolini, and spun around to face her opponent once more, readying another arrow as she did.

@Desbear

A large burst of steam exploded or the field from the point of contact. Stalin was immolated almost immediately, leaving behind a kishin egg soul for the taking.

@Blades

The jetpack was sliced, and Hitler flew around the field wildly. "ZIS CANNOT BE. I AM THE GREAT..." He exploded, leaving behind a kishin egg that floated slowly into the steam.

@Lunartic

The arrow flew into Mussolini's forehead. He grasped at it, trying to pull it out. His body soon became a kishin egg that rested at the bottom of the crater.

Mortecai

Where the fuck did this shit come? HAMMERTIME!

In a few seconds, the steam was cleared, and kishin eggs dotted the field, all except for the still closed box. Mortecai and Archie made quick work of the eggs, all except the three defeated by actual students.

I don't know what the hell just happened, but I don't like it. You three, take your fucking eggs and get your power up already. What were your names?

Archie handed him their records.

Let's see. Warren and Silene, to maintenance. Warren, I heard your dumb ass chewing gum. Silene, you should try better to stop your man whore. Hason and Steven, I don't know what you did, but that steam bullshit ruined the lesson. Maintenance. And the two bitches Alexandra and Jessica. Indecent exposure for the both of you along with being late. double Maintenance. The rest of, get out of my sight.

Mortecai and Archie left the class. Archie let out a friendly wave to the students as if to say "Welcome to hell."

Warren landed on the ground softly, smirking. "Now that was an explosion." The small, shriveled red soul of Hitler drifted down in front of him. He yawned loudly, pulling out another stick of gum and popping it into his mouth. "There you go, Silene, soul number one. Told you it wouldn't be hard."

Silene shifted back into her human form, stretching. Staying in her weapon form too long always made her stiff. "Did you really have to block all those missiles? Couldn't you have just dodged? That stuff hurts." She punched his shoulder lightly, but she was smiling. "Good job on beating him, though."

Before they could do anything else a thick blanket of smoke covered the air. They both broke into a fit of coughing, unable to see what was going on. When the smoke cleared, kishin eggs floated all over the field. Mortecai and Archie made quick work of devouring them, save three of them. The soul of the one they had defeated, a soul hovering by a young teenage girls, and one floating by someone holding a chain chakram.

I don't know what the hell just happened, but I don't like it. You three, take your fucking eggs and get your power up already. What were your names? Warren crossed his arms but didn't respond, so Silene went to for both of them. Before she could the tall man, Archie, handed him their records.

Ignoring it she turned to scold Warren, but he motioned for her to take the soul before they changed their mind. With a nod she picked it up and tossed it into her mouth, chewing twice and swallowing. It didn't really have a flavor, but the texture going down her throat felt amazing. Even with the addition of a single soul she felt more powerful, sharper even. She giggled, but was promptly interrupted by Mortecai.

Let's see. Warren and Silene, to maintenance. Warren, I heard your dumb ass chewing gum. Silene, you should try better to stop your man whore.

Warren blinked twice, swallowed his current gum, then popped another piece into his mouth. Silene flushed red with embarassment, but before she could say anything the two yelled at two more groups of students and left. She was speechless with anger.

Warren turned to the other two pairs that had been addressed, eyeing them lazily. The first pair was a girl dressed like a shark with a rather pathetic looking guy as a weapon, and the other pair was two teenage girls. "Anyone know what maintenance is?"

Jessie transformed back to her human form and stood beside her sister in the crater. ”Are you okay Sis?”

Alex nodded.

”You don’t look okay. How do you feel?” she asked, putting a hand on her shoulder.

Alex instinctively pulled away, but then fell into her sister’s embrace. ”I don’t like our teacher,” she whispered into her ear.

”I can tell,” she replied softly. ”We’ll get through this, I promise.” She pulled back and smiled at Alex. ”Together.”

There was a moment’s pause. ”. . . together.” She motioned to the glowing, red orb in the middle of the crater. ”You should, y’know, do something with that.”

”. . . oh yeah.” Jessie walked over to the egg and crouched down to inspect it. ”So this is what they look like.” She picked it up. ”Not very heavy.” She smelled it.

Alex raised an eyebrow.

”It smells like the shittiest pasta ever made.”

Alex cracked a smile. ”Worse than Dad’s?”

”Oooohh yeah.” She stood straight tossed it between her hands. ”So, what am I supposed to do with it?”

”I dunno . . . absorb it some how?”

Jessie looked at it bewildered. ”Absorb it . . . how the hell am I supposed to do that?”

Alex crossed her arms and twirled some hair around her fingers. ”Well, Mortecai eats it . . .”

Jessie did not look amused. ”I’m not eating this stupid thing.” She rattled her fingertips against the orb - it sounded hollow. ”Hmm . . .” She held the kishin egg in front of her with her right hand and crushed it in her fist. It disintegrated into a fine red dust that absorbed into her. ”Woah! Did you see that?”

Alex looked up. ”What?”

”The egg! I crushed it and it was like, woosh, it turned into dust and then I had this . . . this feeling in my arm that just surged across my body. It was so cool!”

Alex giggled at her ecstatic sister. ”Alright, c’mon Jessie, let’s get going.” The two of them climbed out of the crater, Jessie still going on about the kishin egg, and when they reached the top Mortecai yelled at them some more. Neither of them paid him much attention.

A tall boy greeted them afterwards. Alex shrugged in reply to his question.

”Mortecai must like giving it,” said Jessie. ”The same boy who told us he was an ‘awesome teacher’.” she said with air quotes for emphasis, ”said maintenance wasn’t all that bad.”

I...I'm alive? It actually worked? I began to stand up after the instructor had cleared the mist. Judging by the instructors speech, I wasn't completely exposed, but that little stunt did get me maintenance... That word, maintenance... Why was it, that the moment he said that, I felt fear spark across my spine? Bah, I shouldn't worry about it... It can't be too bad, right? Disregarding the maintenance for now, I began to kneel, pick up the Kishin egg that Stalin had made, placing it beside Steven.

When Steven came back into his human form, he spoke, a bit of a sarcastic tone to his voice.
"That was...Fun, I guess. It was at least exciting! Though, it would be nice if you didn't let them grab me."   I could tell by how he was standing he wasn't completely back to normal, but that was most likely due to the whole maintenance thing... I don't think he saw my little shark trick. Shit! Speaking of which... Ah, there we go. The numbness is back. Soul protection is back on. I hope no one noticed.

Aaaaanyways, I watched as Steven took the Kishin egg, and halfway transformed back into a weapon. I don't know how he knew how to do it... But he sort of consumed it, I guess? He turned his waist down into the part of the chain and the hilt, and disconnected the chain from the hilt. I then watched as he placed the egg in between the chain and the hilt, pressing down as if to connect them both to it. Much to my surprise, the kishin egg seemed to... Disappear, in its place a small link, connecting the chain and the hilt. I should have asked him how he knew to do that. Before I could however, a question rang out from one of the Meisters who was left. I simply shrugged before answering, a bit of a confused tone to my voice.
"I don't really know what maintenance is... But it can't be that bad, right?"

Steven merely shrugged. I don't think he responded verbally, but I knew I would be able to get his opinion on everything in a bit. We normally had lunch in town, making it from whatever we could afford. It was a system, and it worked. I don't think he even said much before leaving, it was strange... He always had something to say. Something had to be bothering him... Eh... Guess I'll find out later.

Steven

After their instructor had finished clearing the steam, he transformed back, cracking his neck. He wasn't sure where the steam came from, but he knew it originated from her... Eh, he'd ask her later, around lunch when they met up to combine their funds for lunch. Though, for now he began to speak, sarcasm lacing his voice. "That was... Fun, I guess. It was at least exciting! Though, it would be nice if you didn't let them grab me.

As he finished speaking, he began to stare at the soul beside him, and felt instinct begin to kick in. He didn't know how he knew, but he knew how to absorb it, or use it. He half transformed into a weapon, and began to disconnect the chain from the hilt... It felt weird. Like really weird, as he dislocated himself from the rest of himself, and placed the soul between the hilt and the chain. He felt power begin to flow into him... And to be honest? It felt amazing. As he transformed back, he stood up, and began to move towards the door. He didn't say anything, he merely shrugged. He didn't have an answer, so why act like it? Even then, he still felt off... He was probably gonna go off and check on the cats, make sure they hadn't killed themselves.

Silene walked up to stand beside Warren, still flushing lightly. "So we're all in the same boat then." She smiled brightly at the group. "I'm sure we'll be fine. I mean, what's the worst that could happen?"

"Well, they could kill us and bury our bodies beneath the school, that'd be pretty bad." Warren paused briefly, seemingly pondering the probability of what he said. "Doubt that'll happen, though."

Silene rolled her eyes and lightly shoved him. "Shut up, we wouldn't even be in this mess if it weren't for you!" Recieving only a shrug in response, she turned back to the other three girls. "Anyways, I'm Silene, and that lazy bum," she motioned over her shoulder at Warren. "Is my meister, Warren."

Warren held his hand out, holding three sticks of gums. "Want a piece?"

"Warren!"

Jessie giggled and popped a piece in her mouth, smacking it with a smile. "Aah, minty. Anyway, I'm Jessie," she tilted to the shorter girl beside her, "and this is my meister, and sister, Alex."

Alex smiled and gave the others a little wave. "Hi. Oh, um, no thank you," she said when offered the gum, involuntarily wrinkling her nose as well.

Jessie gave her sister a curious look, chewing her gum loudly as she did. Then she stopped. "Oh yeah. " She looked back at the other two. " Alex doesn't chew gum."

Alex gave Warren a sympathetic look. "Sorry, I just . . . don't like it."

"She doesn't like mint either.

As I watched my partner leave, I turned to the others. 'I mean, come on! If we were having maintenance together, we might as well know each other first. Right?' Anyways, upon approaching the group, I began to examine what I could from them. I began with the two girls, the ones with long blonde and brown hair. 'Not much to see here. Most I can guess, is that the way they're standing and talking though, I'd assumed they're close, possibly more like siblings than friends... Not much else to see here, other than the fact that one of them isn't wearing too much when it comes to a top.'

The next one I looked over was the girl standing near another, if I remember correctly, she turned into a scythe during the fights. 'Hm... She looks a bit more upbeat than some of the others here, her smile shows that. She seems to argue with her Meister, even describing her meister as a 'lazy bum'... I would probably say the same about Steven actually, but I'm just as bad as he is...'

I then looked to the last one, the only present male, and the one who had been wielding Silene as a scythe during the fights. 'He looks a good bit taller than the rest of us, I wonder if he could use Steven's head as a armrest..? And... What's that smell?' As I looked him over, my eyes began to water... There was the distinct smell of wintergreen coming off of this guy, and he was offering me a piece of gum. Reluctantly, I took a stick of gum, a smile growing on my face. I began to speak,  "Ah, thank you! My name's Hason, and my weapon who decided to be a jackass and leave, is named Steven."

As time went by and the smiling sun turned into a smiling moon, all of the students that were sent to maintenance waited outside the lab doors. There were ten students in all, all from Mortecai's class it seemed. The kid that was slammed through his desk had a swollen face.

"So, anyone else think that Mortecai guy over reacted? I can't smell anymore."

"Yeah, he was kind of intense. I didn't even get a kishin egg."

"Oh shut the hell up, at least you didn't meet the end of his dick!"

The door slowly opened up, and a voice beckoned.

Come in students.

Warren leaned against the wall behind him, hands buried in his pocket, eyeing the crowd languidly. Most of them had taken one glance at him and backed several feet away, grouping with the rest to stay away from him like he was some feral beast. He didn't seem care- if he did it didn't bother him, chewing on his gum sluggishly. "Do you feel that, Silene?"

Silene nodded and unconsciously scooted closer to Warren, wrapping her arms around herself nervously. "This place... it feels wrong."

Warren agreed silently, noticing how much more it affected her. Maybe it was a female thing.

After a few more minutes of waiting, the door opened.

"Come in students."

Hovering close to each other, the two walked into the the strangely eerie lab.

Jessie stood at the back of the small, chatty crowd, her arms crossed and foot tapping, looking back over her shoulder every few seconds and checking her phone even more frequently. It felt like hours when her sister finally arrived. ”It’s about time you showed up. Didn’t you get my text? . . . You were sleeping, weren’t you?”

”How can you tell? Aside from me almost being late.”

”Your hair is kinda puffed up, especially on this side,” she said, running a hand over the left side of her head. Alex mirrored the action on her right side. ”You don’t normally sleep on that side. Are you alright?”

”Mostly. Better, but my shoulder hurts.” Instinctively, she put a hand on her left shoulder and rolled it back a bit. ”It wasn’t until after that class earlier when it started hurting. I don’t know why, I’ve done crazier stunts than that.”

Jessie shrugged.

”You don’t look so good yourself.” She tugged on Jessie’s sleeve. ”You don’t normally wear your sweatshirt like this.”

Sigh “I know. I just . . . I have a bad feeling about this. Like, I really, really don’t want to go in there.”

Alex put an arm around her. ”Look, we’ll be fine. I promise.”

It was as she said that when the door opened and a voice invited - no, more like summoned them inside. And the two sisters, side by shivering side, followed the nervous group of students into the chamber before them.

As we stood, I began to think back a bit to the day prior to this moment, trying to... Sort my thoughts, to say. 'Today's been... Interesting, hasn't it? It started out with us collecting our Kishin egg, and nearly peaked at lunch... Since, it's been a bit sketchy hasn't it? Even during lunch, the air was tense, as we both had multiple questions to ask, but were unable to gain the courage to ask them...  I remember we had made jokes about maintenance probably being like kittens and rainbows compared to some of the things that we had seen in town... So why am I tense now?'

So here we are now. Standing behind Steven, just sort of... Waiting. Beginning to think about now, rather than earlier. 'It seems that all of those that Mortecai gave Maintenance actually showed up... Including Steven, which is a bit of a surprise to be honest. Even now, he seems to be swaying from side to side, with a bit of a stupid grin on his face, as if trying to hide the fact that he was uneasy about this... To be honest, I thought he was overreacting, but I can't blame him. The entire thing is quite unnerving.' As a few of the others discussed what was going on, the door began to open, an eerie voice saying to come in, and so, we did... Though, it would have been nice had I not have to grab Steven's wrist and pull him in.

Steven

Steven stood near the front of the crowd, as he had arrived earlier than some, however... He had began to wish he hadn't. As he stood there, waiting, and watching as others arrived... He couldn't help but feel this sense of dread, this sense that made him want to leave, to run... But also something made him curious. It felt off, he couldn't place it, but this wasn't normal for him. He was almost always tense, nervous, and somewhat afraid of what was going on. But this felt off, even for him. This felt... Stronger, and while it could have been just his nerves and fear getting the best of him, he didn't believe it to be so.

This was why he was curious. He had even began to forget, and ignore what had happened earlier in the day... As other's arrived, he noticed the feeling began to feel stronger. He felt fear begin to creep further into his being, and he even began to shift where he stood, yet he did something he usually did not; He stayed. Truth to be told, he couldn't move even if he wanted to, his legs refused to move. Even when the doors opened, and they were called in, his partner had to grab him, and pull him along... Earlier the feeling had made him curious, yet now... He just wanted away.

A man floating in front of the children, wrapped in a tattered cloak that flowed around him. There was no wind to speak of. The machinery and vials lined the lab, a few tables merely said "experiment" with varying numbers, some crossed out with a red X.

So, you all angered Mortecai? That man has a serious problem. Makes sense though, seeing as he used to be a boomerang. I helped him becoem the hammer he is, and I may or may not have touched the brain.

The Stranger floated across the room, looking at each student. He looked at Warren and Silene.

You there, explosive stranger. Your soul quakes with raw energy. You want to watch the world burn don't you? You and I share that, although I have a much cleaner way to go about it and you must be his weapon. My, what a beautiful soul you have. So vibrant, and fiery. A perfect match. The short fuse and the hot flame.

He looked at Hason and Steven.

Something is off about you. You too share a need to destroy. But you're afraid aren't you? Why are you so afraid of your potential? Is it because it's naturally terrifying? No, that's not it. It's because you're afraid of who you truly are. And the chakram. Don't be nervous lad. You can be at ease with me. Your souls are in perfect sync with each other. At least, for now.

He looked at Alexandra and Jessica

You two are very peculiar indeed. It's pretty rare for a human to be born into a demon weapon family. And for you to resonate with your sister is even more rare. Such raw potential. Too bad you're wasting it. There is so much more to you two than you realize, so much more you could offer.

The stranger commented on the others. The air felt cold as he spoke, something in his voice seemed to warn them, and invite them.

Such potential, such life. A shame you have to go to "it"

The floor crumbled beneath all of them. They fell for what seemed like thousands of feet. Upon landing, all they could see was a burning landscape. Molten magma flowed in rivers. The sky was as black as the abyss. The only thing within the area was a large structure. A tower made of flesh and bone.

You see children, I have been working on a special experiment. I will be the first to study a full kishin. And your souls will be the final pieces to awaken it. One of you in particular is the final ingredient. Now let's see

He grabbed a hold of Jessie, feeling up and down her arm.

You will due nicely.

He used his soul distortion and forced her into weapon form. The arrow he had in her quiver flowed with an electrical current. A volley of lighting bolts was shot at each of the students.

THOR'S WRATH!

"Shit!"
"Aaah!"

Warren recovered from the shock of the floor collapsing first, twisting himself around to face Silene. The harsh air rushed against him, but he managed to find. "Silene, transform!" The wind drown his voice out, but the motion from his hand was clear enough.

"Got it!"

The explosive meister hit the ground hard, the force of it bringing him to one knee, and he gripped his weapon tightly. Through her wavelength Warren could feel Silene's apprehension, and looking around, he didn't blame here. The place was blisteringly hot, the only source of light the rivers of magma that flowed all around them, and a structure of flesh and bone extended to unseen heights in the black sky. He shivered slightly. "Don't worry, I won't let anything happen."

Silene frowned inside her soul room. "It's not me I'm scared for, you lazy bum! Be careful, that guy... It was like he could see our very being." No sooner had she spoke the cloak appeared in front of them, grabbing the Demon Bow from earlier, Jessie, and somehow forcing her into a weapon.

"Wha... Damn it! Hold on Silene, this is gonna get rough!"

"Warre-"

Warren cut her off, flowing his wavelength through her and slamming the butt of the scythe into the ground. The moment it made contact the base exploded, sending them arcing into the air and over the electricity, his foot extended in a kick. "Drop the girl!"

Alex was shocked. Stunned. Her normally floating gaze was cold and unwavering. Jessie could see the words forming on her unmoving lips: human born into a demon weapon family. It wasn’t possible, surely . . . but nobody knows who her real parents are. Does he know? Would he ever tell them?

Jessie was ready to blare out question after question when she was flying, falling, faster and faster down and down. She landed flat on her back, winded but not dead, and gratefully took Alex’s outstretched hand as she came back to her feet.

”Are you okay?” she asked, brushing dirt off her sister.

”Yeah, yeah I’m fine.” She looked up and down Alex while straightening out her shirt. ”You seem to have fared better.”

Alex smiled and brushed a lock of hair behind her ear. She opened her mouth to say something but all that came out was a scream mirrored by her sister as she was pulled back by the hooded figure.

His touch was a strange sensation, a burning cold that made Jessie want to curl up in a ball and pray she didn’t exist but all she could do was stand there and watch him examine her, grope her like a precious little doll, a new plaything for him to do as he pleased. She wanted to do something, anything, but all she could do was scream. And his face, she knew his face wasn’t there, only darkness, but she could see the face of a man she swore on her life she would never come close to again. Yet here he was.

Alex saw him too. He saw the man who she would have killed to protect her sister, and here he was thinking he could touch her let alone be near her. ”Leave her alone!” cried the normally quiet Alexandra. ”You get the fuck away from her you backstabbing piece of shit!” She charged forward at them, but the others held her back. ”I’ll kill you! I’ll fucking kill you! Get your god damn hands off of my sister!” Her throat was hoarse and tears were streaming down her cheeks but there was nothing she could do but stand by and watch.

And she watched her beloved sister Jessica perform the most painful transformation she’s ever done.

It was impossible for her to move. Jessie’s scream was nothing Alex had ever heard. It lingered in her mind, blocked out all senses, brought her world to a standstill. There was nothing left for her but pain.

Something about the room we entered was off. The man was even floating, and his cloak was... Odd, to say the least. I noticed multiple machines, and there were vials in a line. However, the most intriguing part of all of this, had to be the tables that only said 'Experiment 003 004'. As he began to speak, I felt my blood run cold, however... I don't think I could have predicted what came next. When he spoke... When he spoke to me, I felt myself begin to tense up... 'Does he know? No... He can't. He can't know. He can't know. He can't know...'

As he moved on, I began to just... Stand there, staring off into a seemingly vast nothingness. When the floor began to crumble underneath me, it reflected how I felt, and I thought it to be my head. as if the world was crumbling underneath me. I wanted to believe he didn't know. I wanted to believe I was still safe... But that was a feeling I wouldn't feel again, for quite some time. I was no longer safe the moment I stepped into this room... When we hit the ground however, something made it self very apparent; I had more pressing matters to worry about. 'I... Need to calm down. I need to focus. I need... To live.'

As I began to look around, I didn't even notice that my legs hadn't sustained any damage from the fall; I just moved on, my legs unharmed. Steven had landed a few feet away, farther than when we had been standing there. I noticed his eye's began to change very quickly, as if fear had overtaken him, and he had realized something. He quickly ran towards me, sprinting even before jumping, and turning into weapon form midair. I reached out my arm, and grabbed Steven's hilt out of the air, watching as one of the other's was forced into a weapon form... 'He just... Forced her into weapon form... I didn't even know that was possible...'

When he drew an arrow, I notice one more thing... Earlier, I must have turned off, or even forgotten to activate my Soul Protection, but I could... Feel it.  The electricity, everywhere as he fired... I could sense each individual shot, and feel  their movements... I could feel that overwhelming sense of dread as the shots hurtled towards me... I was going to stand still, I was going to hide, but... A voice rang out, and reminded me of something. "Hason! One of the other's isn't moving. We can't let her get shot here. He reminded me... Reminded me that I wasn't the only one who would be shot by these bolts. That I wasn't the only one who had to live through this. I moved in front of the girl, the one who's partner had just been taken from her... And I did something I didn't even know possible. I began to swing the chain and chakram in front of me and the girl, a translucent shield in the image of a chakram blocking the electric shots. 'I... How did I... You know what, let's not question it... Let's just play defense for now.'

Steven

The Weapon felt uneasy, and it only worsened as the other said not to fear... However, what might have been eating at him further, was what he said about Hason... What did he mean by that? What was he saying she was? She was a Meister, wasn't she? She was his partner... So what was he talking about when he said that she was 'scared of her potential'...? He would have thought on it longer, had the ground not opened up under them, swallowing them...

Upon landing, he noticed the heat almost immediately, and the landscape wasn't a sight that instilled him with confidence.. He only felt more, and more uneasy by every second, and the fact that Hason was visibly bothered by what he had said, wasn't helping... However, when the cloaked figure spoke again, he thought that he knew why he was uneasy... This guy really was shady, and the notion that they were going to become Kishin food wasn't too helpful.

When the figure took hold of one of the weapons, and forced her into a transformation, he felt fear begin to spark up to new levels... However, he also felt anger. He didn't care for the feeling of Transforming in the first place, so he could only imagine what a forced change would feel like... So he did something. He ran. He ran towards Hason, and transformed, allowing himself to be caught out of the air by Hason... He could feel it. She was tense, scared. He could tell that something was getting to her, but to be honest, he didn't care about that for now. Instead, he had noticed that the girl, the one who's partner had been taken from her, was just... Standing there, even as the figure let out a bolt at her, she just stood there. And they had to help. He did something he normally wouldn't do, but he thought needed; He told Hason what to do. "Hason! One of the other's isn't moving. We can't let her get shot here.

To his surprise, Hason moved. She had placed herself in between the bolts, and the girl... And then she did something that also surprised him. She began to swing him, faster, and faster, until a translucent shield in the shape of a chakram appeared, and he felt as each shot slammed into the shield, being blocked... And more importantly, keeping both of them safe.

The other students tried running, but the bolts hit the ground, launching them close to the magma rivers. Cowards, all of them. The stranger, having grown bored, simply threw the bow aside. The girl returned to her natural form upon hitting the ground.

What's wrong friend? Don't like my technique?

The stranger let out an arm from his cloak. It was halfway rotted, but the bone that shone threw shined like iron. He moved too fast for the flying meister, punching him in the gut with a right hook. He then grabbed Silene, still in weapon form, and tuned her to his soul. He placed the blade at Warren's throat.

I always wanted to try this experiment. How much can a soul break when a weapon is used on its meister? You're the very first to recieve it. Be glad you're helping the pursuit of science.

The Stranger Raised Silene up in the air. Her blade was surrounded by a massive amount of soul energy, and it elevated to large proportions.

Prepare for the ultimate attack. SHINIGAMI DESTROYER

One of the other students finally sacked up, and revealed himself to be a sniper rifle. He shot at the strangers hand. Though it didn't hurt him, it interrupted him enough to stop the attack. He let his arms to his side, still holding Silene in a death grip.

Please refrain from interfering with the experiment. Perhaps an arm will due.

The stranger slashed at Warren's right arm.

The stranger threw aside the bow and pulled back his sleeve to reveal a rotted, decomposing arm with solid, protruding bone. Warren's brief sense of satisfaction quickly turned to horror and he attempted to turn away, but he was far too slow. The blow smashed into his solar plexus with enough force to send him hurtling back towards the ground, Silene falling from his grasp.

"Warren!"

He hit the ground hard, struggling for air and clutching his stomach.  "S-Silene..."  Warren struggled to sit up, then collapsed in a coughing fit, hacking up blood into his hand.

The sight of her meister in pain, his wavelength screaming in protest as he tried to push himself farther than he could go, combined with the unfamiliar, menacing presence terrified her. Helpless, she screamed out in protest as the blade of her scythe-form was leveled with Waren's throat, wavelength fluctuating wildly in panic. Every fiber of her being screamed that this was wrong, but she couldn't do anything to stop it. She was going to kill her best friend.

"Prepare for the ultimate attack. SHINIGAMI DESTROYER!"

"I-I'm... I'M SORRY WARREN!"

She didn't hear his voice when he responded, she felt it in her soul. "It's alright... I don't blame you." He smiled in the face of defeat and she felt a little piece of her slowly slowly dying as her blade arced down.

Then, like the chime of a church bell, a shot rang out. It hit the stranger, stopping him in his tracks, and for a brief moment hoped dawned within her. It was immediately squashed.

"Please refrain from interfering with the experiment. Perhaps an arm will due."

The scythe blade whistled through the air, cutting clean through Warren's arm. It rolled several feet away, hand still clenched into a white-knuckled fist. Warren didn't react for an instance, staring at the stump that was now his right arm and the bloody scythe-blade above him in confusion. A second later, a blood-curdling scream rang out in the chamber, but after a moment he realized it wasn't him.

Silene was screaming, weapon-form shaking violently. "No, no, no, no! I'm sorry, I didn't mean to..."

Warren stared up at her and, using his remaining hand as leverage, hauled himself to his feet. Blood spewed from his once-arm like river, leaving a trail as he stumbled toward the stranger, struggling to keep his balance. Once he reached them, he smiled. "Don't... Don't sweat it Silene. I have two arms, but only one of you." Weakly, he wrapped his good hand around the bar of the scythe and tried to pull her free.

He tossed her. He fucking tossed her aside like a used rag, washed up and old and beyond its life.

"Jessica!!" Alex ran over to her sister, lying limp on the ground. ”Oh my god Jessica are you alright?” She turned her sister over so she was turned upright. ”Oh my fucking god please alright.”

Jessie moaned.

Alex breathed a sigh of relief. ”Oh thank god you’re alive.”

She coughed, then said, barely audible, ”H-how bad is it.”

”You’re not bleeding. How do you feel?”

Jessie swallowed and closed her eyes. ”Like fucking shit. I feel like every part of me was . . . was . . ." She broke out into tears.

Alex wrapped her arms around Jessie, comforting her, whispering soft, kind words into her ear, promising her that everything will be alright.

Alex hoped she sounded convincing, because she wasn’t proving that to herself.

As the figure threw the bow aside, I let the chakram fall, and with it the shield... I'd figure out how I did that later. I sorta have to live to be able to figure it out. As I began to look up at the figure, I watched as the being took the Meister's scythe, and swung her into him, chopping off his arm... As you would expect, this caused several emotions. However, the greatest of all, had to be a combination of anger and despair, fear nearly having been crushed by those two. Reason would have told me to run. Reason would have told me not to fight back, to stay on the defensive. However, reason was overruled by one thing, one force, that influenced by actions more than the other... Steven. His voice cracked out from the weapon form, seething with rage. "Hason... This is gonna sound like a really shitty idea... And it could go very badly... But, I need you to do something... Fight him.  Throw me. Attack him. Do. Something... Anything."

This... Inspired me. It wasn't the best idea. But my mind was so... Overwhelmed with emotions, that I couldn't really think at that moment. My wrist changed positions, and my arm followed suit, whipping the chakram behind me, and then whipping it around my side towards the figure... 'Please... Just... Work.'

Steven

Steven watched as the figure simply... Threw her aside. As he just discarded them as if they weren't useful to him anymore, and then snatched the Scythe from her partner... He felt rage begin to well up inside of him... However, nothing would match the feeling of anger that was created when the figure used the scythe to attack, and even harm her partner... He had to do something. He couldn't run... He couldn't defend... He wouldn't do either if given the choice. They needed to go on the offensive... And he made his stance on this known, a voice of pure anger and rage echoing from his form. "Hason... This is gonna sound like a really shitty idea... And it could go very badly... But, I need you to do something... Fight him.  Throw me. Attack him. Do. Something... Anything."  And so she did. She swung him with great force and speed. And the chakram's blades even seemed to begin moving faster and faster as his rage continued to build...  All Steven knew, was that they had to do something. That this had to work.

And like that, he let the scythe go. Again he was bored. Not the reaction he was expecting.

Guess you're next.

He caught the blade, and stopped the spinning with his fingers. He then pulled the chain as hard as he could.

I know you're quite familiar with this feeling. I think you last dodged a burning fist.

With a final pull, he brought the meister to him, opening his cloak to reveal an expanse of nothingness. A void he would call it. Waiting inside could be anything he imagined, anything he wanted for this meister to experience. She was brought closer and closer until, poof, gone.

So Steven, tell me, does it hurt when I do this?

He used soul distortion on the poor weapon, causing it to tense up and lock his chains. Inside the void, one voice simply said.

"I know you're a filthy witch"

Warren pulled his scythe closer to him when the stranger released it, trying to shelter her from the enigmatic man with his own body. "Got...gotcha." The last of his adrenaline ran its course and his knee buckled, sending him crashing to the ground.

"Warren!" Silene shifted back to her regular form, catching him and gently lowering him to the ground, resting his head in her lap. The sight of him, clammy and barely conscious, was enough to make her sick. She tenderly stroked his cheek, afraid if she pressed too hard he would break like a porcelain doll. "You idiot... You stupid, stupid idiot..." Her voice cracked on the last word and she pulled him closer to her chest, crying and praying to whatever God was out there he would be alright. "You can't die, not yet."

Warren weakly raised his hand and brushed away her tears. "Don't worry about me, I'll be fine." His words weren't very reassuring considering his arm shook when he even lifted it, but he had to try. For his sake, if not hers. If he admitted he was probably going to die down... wherever they were, it was all over.

Part of Silene wanted to hit him for being an idiot,, but a larger part of her was just overwhelmingly happy he wasn't dead yet. She was tired, hurt, terrified and sickened by the thought of what she had done to her best friend, but as long they were both alive things would turn out alright... Reigning in her emotions, she applied what little medical knowledge she knew. "We need to staunch the bleeding, Warren."

"Yeah." His voice was weaker than normal, even to him.

Silene morphed her arm into a scythe blade and sheared through the midriff of her shirt, turning the sweater into a belly shirt. "This is gonna hurt. You ready?"  Warren nodded and she began, wrapping the stump of an arm up in a nice, tight bundle with the cloth. Warren grit his teeth in pain, his blood seeping into the shirt-bandage. It was already maroon, so the blood only darkened the red color.

"....Thank-"

The scythe meister was cut off as the girl from earlier, the one who had wielded the chain chakram, whipped past them with a shout. His face paled when she vanished into the darkness of the cloak, anger resonating from his very core. "Silene, help me up."

"You don-"

"Help me up, now." Something about him visibly changed. The color in his skin started to returned, like energy rushing back to him, and Silene felt his wavelength strengthen. She nodded and helped him to his feet, slinging his good arm over her shoulder and supporting his weight, not for the first time shocked at the inhuman endurance her human meister possessed. "Just don't push it, Warren. Please."

The meister didn't acknowledge his weapon, limping forward with her aid to stand directly in front of the foremost of them, which happened to be Jessie and Alex. "Hey!" Warren's grin would have made Hason proud, predatory and shark-like, revealing his bloodstained teeth. It made him appear less weary, despite the bandaged arm and clammy skin. "I'm gonna blow you apart!"

Silene involuntarily flinched at the sight of the stranger and the memory of how it had felt to be wielded by him, unable to stop herself, but Warren's arm tightened reassuringly around her neck. She wasn't alone. They could do this. She switched into her scythe form, landing in his good hand, and it felt different. She didn't feel weaker than him, she felt equal. Their soul wavelengths complimented and strengthed each other, giving him the power to throw himself forward in one last explosive attack. "Die!"

Steven

His heart nearly stopped, and he only grew in rage as the blades were caught... It was that feeling again, that feeling of having failed his partner... As his meister was flung into the void, he felt rage continue to build, even as the soul distortion was activated, his anger broke through... He had to do something. He couldn't fail again... He wanted to do something. Anything... But he couldn't. His chains were locked, and he was firmly stuck there... He had failed. He couldn't do anything to stop the one that held him... He was stuck there, and there was nothing he could do about it... And that hit him. A wave of despair began to wash over him as he realized, that all he had done, for his partner, or anyone else... Was fail them.

Hason

When he yanked on the chain, this time... I didn't let go. I couldn't, it was as if my hands were locked in place. I just... Held on, until I was flung into what seemed to be a never ending void, full of darkness and open space. I floated through this void for what seemed like an eternity, before a voice rang out... One that would haunt me forever. It was... His, saying that I was a 'filthy witch'...  I felt a knot tie itself in my stomach, and I felt my eyes begin tear up... A voice cracked out, the person saying it being very obviously teary, possibly even crying as they spoke... It was my voice... "No... No no no... I'm...I'm not..."

I felt my chest begin to feel heavy, and my breathing becoming strained... An image of *him* appeared, as if running away... Running away from... Me... I extended my arm, as if trying to go out for him, as if to... Grab him, and stop him from running away... I spoke, a voice broken by sadness echoing out... "No... Come back...!" And then something I hadn't expected happened... I fired out magic, water, in the shape of a shark's maw, from my hand, towards him...  The bolt quickly caught up with him, biting off his legs... Another voice rang out, once again his, full of anger and hatred... "Ah,  shit! Get away from me, ya' fricken' monster!"

Those words... I felt my...My everything begin to crash down on me... I felt my emotions begin to be thrown around willy nilly, and I just... Fell. My knees gave way, and I fell to the floor, the image disappearing subsequently... However I didn't see it's departure. I just... Sat there. Crying... Thinking... My voice rang out, however the tone was quieter, being hushed and strained, as the words echoed into the vast nothingness..."No...no. I'm not... I don't want to... I'm not a monster... I didn't want.... I didn't do... I'm...Sorry Steven."

Whatever the hell Alex said made Jessie feel a lot better about herself. She took a deep breath, steadied her shaking body. Another breath, dried her cold cheeks. One more, pulled herself from Alex, looked her in the eyes, and together they stood. It’s a special feeling when two souls resonate so deep and strong, pounding with every adrenaline-charged heartbeat. And they felt it.

One look at the two standing side by side before them was all it took to bring them forward.  ”We need to get Hason out of there.” Jessie was shocked that she could recall the strange girl’s name. ”If we can get back Steven we might get somewhere.” And again with the names! How was she doing this?

”Get ready Jessie. I want you in my hands the moment he makes a move.” Alex's voice was quiet but strong. This is the voice Jessie was hoping to hear.

Out of the corner of her eye, Jessie watched Silene transform and fall into Warren's hand - holy shit he lost an arm! - and she reacted without hesitation. "That move is now!" she yelled as she transformed.

I meant the cloak thing, Jessie. she whispered while drawing an arrow.

Jessie shrugged - almost ten years and it still amazed Alex that she could see that. Close enough. Now let's go!

Two attacks coming in form either side left the Stranger with a couple choices. Eat the attack and lose all the work he has gained, or dodge it and lose his two captive. He got out of the way, dropping Steven on the ground. Hason was ejected from the void in a random direction, though she fell on solid ground.

There we go, that's what I've been waiting for. You will make great meals for my creation.

The Stranger disappeared into the shadows to regain some strength. Torturing victims takes a lot of energy.

"I'm...sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry..." That was the only thought that echoed through my mind. That was, until I was thrust out of the void-like area. Upon hitting the ground, I just sort of... Curled up into a ball, resting my chin upon my knees, confusion overwhelming me... I began to think about what had happened in the void, images of the bloody, and mutilated Steven flashing into my mind... And then I heard a voice. "...Hason... Hason!" The voice echoed out... As I opened my my eyes, I saw him standing there, shaking me... He began to speak, his voice sounding concerned.  "Hason... I... Don't really know what you saw in there, but... We need ya', and I believe in ya'. I mean come on, I'm gonna need your help to stop this monster."

I... Don't know why, but those words filled be with hope, with... Energy. I began to stand up, and wiped the wet liquid from my face... I... Had been crying, it seemed. He gave me a small smile, before putting his hand out. I took hold of his hand, and he transformed, the hand I had been holding becoming that of a hilt. I felt an... Energy, begin to flow through me. As if we were... In sync, per-say. It was similar to that of when I would normally wield him, but... Stronger, and the bond felt like it would endure even the thickest flame. 'I... Need to put my doubts behind me, at least until we make it out of here... Until we get out alive.'

Steven

As the attacks hit the stranger, Steven felt a feeling, one of comfort, as he was released to the ground. He quickly turned back into his human form, and began to look for his Meister, he had seen being thrown out of the cloak, and land on the ground a few feet away. When he arrived, what he saw was... Odd, to him. She was balled up, and just... Sitting there. Crying. He wasn't sure what she had seen in there... But he was going to have to break her out of it. As he neared her, he kneeled down to her, and took hold of her shoulders, lightly shaking her, before speaking. "Hason! Hason!" His voice was a tone of concern, and he only continued to speak when she opened her eyes, tears streaming down her face.  "Hason... I... Don't really know what ya' saw in there, but... We need you, and I believe in ya'. I mean come on, I'm gonna need your help to stop this monster."

He didn't tell what it was that he said that helped, but he could tell it did. He watched as she slowly got up, and wiped the tears from his face. He would have to ask her what she saw later, but for now... They had a monster to at least help kill. He held out a hand, that she took, prompting him to transform into his weapon form, for her to hold. As she stood there, holding him, he felt a somewhat overwhelming power begin to flow into him... It was like the bond of when she would wield in him combat, but it felt... Stronger. Was this soul resonance...? Only time would tell.

The stranger reappeared, but not in his usual form. He was massive, monstrous, and more terrifying. The students that cowered before seemed to have run off. To where was anyone's guess. His body was covered in rotted flesh. His bones like living armor. Steam rose from the exposed muscle. He no longer needed a weapon. He was the weapon, a living behemoth whose goal was to get rid of these pests and raise the Kishin.

Few mortals have stood before me and fought back. I normally have them so broken they simply give up hope. You have done well to prove to me your species has a small chance. I'll be sure to pass on your story.

He attacked with his large fists. The force of the swing alone could be felt before it would strike.

Warren grinned up at the towering figure like a madman, crouched to keep his balance as the ground trembled, his scythe held precariously in his only hand behind him. Only one thought ran through his half-functioning, pain addled mind; "Just more to blow the fuck up!"

The sheer joy that oozed from his wavelength at the thought of destruction threatened to overwhelm Silene, but she held her ground. Despite her exhaustion and his wounds, they had never resonated more. Even so, Warren was playing a dangerous game, hovering on the brink of insanity in an attempt to amplify his strength. One misstep and they were through.

"Nuh-uh, you don't get to crush me before I blow you up!"  Warren launched himself from his position on the quaking ground, landing firmly on the stranger's massive forearm, wobbling and smirking. "Where should I hit first?" He spotted a thick, bulging vein on the beast's neck. "Oooh, wonder what kind of mess that would make if I blew it open!" Still excited and barely in control of himself, he ran up giant's arm surprisingly fast, drawing his scythe back and preparing an explosion to end all explosions.

Wavelengths gathering, souls drawn together, they achieved what Silene had only dreamed about: Soul Resonance. The power she felt was overwhelming, unbelievable, and very, very terrifying. It coursed through her like electric wire, lighting her up as it went. Her scythe-blade grew larger and serrated, flames roaring down the steel expanse. "Warren!"

Warren wrapped both hands around the newly formed weapon as he ran, reveling in the familiar, musky scent of fire and smoke. When he got close enough a dark crimson orb materialized at the tip of his blade, audibly crackling with explosive power, and he brought the scythe down."TIME FOR THE BOOM!"

Hason

I... Should have felt fear. I should have cowered at the form I saw... But that wouldn't matter now. As I felt the the being begin to swing, I began to do something I had proved I was very good at; I ran. As we ran, I felt a power, one... Just out of reach, but different than I had felt before... And so, I continued to reach for it, expending energy as I did so, and then... Seemingly receiving it back, and I could feel Steven doing it too... And then, I felt energy begin to be noticeably drained from my body, and as what appeared to be energy encase the chains. The hilt even changed, to that similar to the end of a serpent's tail. The head of the weapon, the chakram even changed, to that of a serpent's head... This was when I realized something, what was going on; This, was the power of Soul Resonance.

As I ran, I noticed the chains extended fourth in front of me, keeping up, and even beginning to pull away, growing in length as they began to drag across the ground... And then, I noticed as the head of the serpent began to hover across the ground, speeding up as it moved. I quickly jumped up, and onto the tail of the weapon... Had it always been this large? Bah, I would figure out what was going on later... As the weapon wove through the air, I began to hunch down, clutching onto what seemed to be two handles...

As the body of the serpent was dragged across the ground, I watched as the snake reached a point of safety, much closer to the behemoth with ease; Dodging the large sweeping attack. I then watched as the head of the snake seemed to... Latch onto the leg of the behemoth, and then snake its way up, circling the being's body as they rose in hieght. I was somewhat fearful as we rose, but I saw something that confused me greatly; For some reason, the chains followed the path the head made exactly, not whipping around wildly bellow, but raking across the monster, sticking to the path set.

As we neared the head of the being, I heard Steven call out to me, his voice a bit concerned.  "Hey uh, Hason. I'm sorry for suddenly taking off like that, but I wasn't really expecting it either. You okay back there?" To this, I merely chuckled, nodding my head, and replying with a bit of an excited tone. "Yeah, I'm fine! And it's no problem, I wasn't sure what was going on either, but... What's your plan?" There was silence for a few seconds, before he answered, a bit of a embarrassed tone to his voice. "I uh... I was gonna go with a choke hold method, either separate the head or cut off his breathing for a bit... Gotta at least try, right?" To this, I chuckled a little bit. I gave a bit of a reassuring nod, and then allowed him to go on with his plan. After all, I didn't have a plan myself, and he was doing most of the work anyways; I was just the battery.

Steven

As Hason whipped him out in front of her as she ran, Steven felt something just out of reach... Something he felt he had to reach out for... He quickly attempted to grab onto the power, but in turn expended energy... And then receiving it back, and then receiving it back once again... As he did so, he felt his weapon form... Changing. He felt the power of resonance changing his form. The chakram blade changed, growing in size and changing, to where it resembled that of a snake's. Next, a thick, soul energy began to coat the chains, and the chains began to extend farther and farther, also growing in size and length. Finally, the hilt changed from a leather bound hilt, to that of a serpent's tail, with two holds for a person to hold onto.

As the serpent was whipped in front of the meister, he felt as the head began to hover over the ground, as the chains began to rake across the ground. He felt as he gained control, able to change the speed and the direction he was going, right or left. He increased the speed to the max almost immediately, narrowly dodging the large swinging attack as it began to sweep across behind them. He then, began to do what felt natural; The weapon began to snake up the leg of the monster, the head seemingly beginning to hover off of the monster, and the chains dragging across the beings body as they were led around.

As they began to ascend up the beings body, and grow closer to the head, he realized something; He should probably check on his meister's fate, or at least, see how she thought she was faring. "Hey uh, Hason. I'm sorry for suddenly taking off like that, but I wasn't really expecting it either. You okay back there?" A smile grew on his face within the weapon as she replied, with what he would have considered a rare tone for her; Excited. "Yeah, I'm fine! And it's no problem, I wasn't sure what was going on either, but... What's your plan?" His reply was a bit... Paused, or stalled. He was trying to figure out how to say it, without making it sound completely insane, however... That proved to be difficult. "I uh... I was gonna go with a choke hold method, either separate the head or cut off his breathing for a bit... Gotta at least try, right?"

Her response actually caused him to grow confident, as she merely nodded, and didn't say anything against it... And so, he continued. Beginning to tighten the chain around the being's neck, trying to cut off breathing or... Really do anything.

Alex put Jessie over her shoulder and hurried over to the other pair, but stopped short of a few feet. They deserve a moment. That moment didn’t last long as both meisters brandished their weapons, Alex’s an instinctive reaction to . . . something. A strange feeling that she - no - that Jessie had felt. ”He’s coming.”

And she was right. He emerged from the shadows enormous and disgusting, a beast spat out by the gates of Hell. Many of the few students that were still present and conscious had seemed to disappear, and for good reason. A humungous fist came careening towards them.

Run!

No shit.

Alex did exactly that, and the massive hand barely missed her heels. ”So that’s how it’s going to be, huh.” She set Jessie on the ground and stared at The Beast. ”You want to play rough? Than let’s play rough.” She peeled off her gray-green overcoat and tossed it aside.

Finally shedding your outer layer?

Alex gave her sister a sly grin. There’s more. She kissed the silver medallion around her neck and stuffed it down her knit tunic, which was then pulled off and placed with the coat. Only a sleeveless white undershirt covered her top.

Jessie laughed and applauded. Now that’s more like it!

Alex picked her back up and ran once more. She could feel the air behind her as The Beast’s hand came down once more. She ran over to the only other four that stuck around - or at least to where she could talk to them. ”Anyone have a plan?”

Don’t die.

”Oh shush. Anyone else?” Alex didn’t receive an answer, because the next thing she knew Hason was riding a giant snake up The Beast and Warren was at his neck shouting about “The Boom”.

Alright, aim for the neck. Sounds like a good plan to me.

KKRrrr-thwump.

Hey Alex.

KKRrrr-thwump.

Yeah?

 KKRrrr-thwump.

How are you feeling?

KKRrrr . . .

Good. Really, really good.

Having fun?

Alex grinned. Hell yeah.

thwump.

That was a huge understatement.

Each heartbeat was charged with adrenaline, pulsing in time with their wavelengths, surging back and forth, weapon to meister, meister to weapon, each in synch to a silent drum. The name touched their lips: Soul Resonance. They felt each other grow stronger, two of a whole together, side by side, drawing a single arrow on a massive bow. A seemingly demonic aura glowed from the limbs, the arrow black and solid. And together they released The Barrage of Athena. From one came hundreds of thick and heavy arrows, each finding their mark in The Beast like dots of paint on a canvas, embedding in his skin and bones. Not a single bolt was wasted.

The Stranger was being held down, possibly revenge from the weapon he had cause to tense up and lock. The explosive meister ran up the right arm, the same arm he lost. His scythe grew more menacing, and was engulfed in fire. He aimed a strike at the strangers. The two women, seeming to brim with confidence, launch a barrage of arrows, increasing the pressure on him. All the attacks hit in combination. The arrows pierced through the stranger, yet seemed to miss the creatures on him. The scythe hit his jugular, and the blood exploded out of the vein that drenched the field. He felt the snake squeeze as hard as it could, crushing his body. No, this was his world, he could have stopped it, but found he couldn't. Why couldn't he alter the path? Was this their will overtaking him? No, they were resonating. They learned their hidden talent.

So, they really are special. Carter, this had better be worth it.

With the last breath, the beast let go. He collapsed to the ground, and a massive soul was left before the three pairs of children, no Warriors. The soul spun around, faster and faster, and then let out a bright light.

The students woke up from the illusion, finding themselves sitting at regular desks. The lab that looked menacing was replaced by a modern biology lab. The stranger, still wearing the tattered cloak, was sitting at the front of the classroom. His face was hidden by a scarf. His hands were folded on each other, wrapped in surgical gloves.

Congratulations. You all passed your first day. A+ work. I have a report ready for Carter.

The only students in the room were Warren, Silene, Hason, Steven, Alex, and Jessie. The others were gone.

Surprising as the others were simply let go. They proved to weak for the standards of this school. You six are quite incredible, achieving soul resonance, even within my illusion planes. I apologize for anything I had to subject you to. I needed to prepare you for moments where an opponent will truly be past your abilities. So, you're all free to ask any questions. If not, then you are free to go rest up.

”Where’s my shirt?!?”

Five heads turned to the back of the group where a very embarrassed Alex in a white sleeveless undershirt was trying to make herself less and less noticeable.

*sigh* “Borrow mine Alex.” Jessie stood up to take off her gray tunic and toss it over to her sister, who accepted it gratefully.

 ”Thank you so much Jessie.”

She shrugged. ”No problem. Besides,” she looked around at the other five  before sitting back down, ”I’m used to wearing less than that.” It was only after she sat down did Jessie realize how flirtatious she just acted. How were the other two girls going to see her now? Did her eyes linger on the two boys for too long? Ah Hell, what do I care?

Stop embarrassing yourself Jessie.

She looked back at Alex, who smiled and waved to her. Jessie raised an eyebrow. What? Alex mouthed in response. Jessie just shook her head and turned forward.

Hason

I... Wasn't really sure what had happened. I heard loud, crunching as the being fell, and with it, we did... And then, it was over. When I awoke, I was sitting at a regular desk... It was all so confusing. 'What just happened...? Was... None of that real? As the instructor, teacher, or even cloak elaborated on what had been going on, I just sort of... Sat there. Silently thinking about what had gone on. 'I have to ask him about that... I... Also need to know if I'm safe.'

As I continued to think, my thoughts were interrupted when one of the girls asked about her shirt. To be honest, she would have been fine if she had said nothing, as I doubt anyone would have noticed. I heard a rather loud sigh from the desk near her, and watched as one of the girls took off their tunic and gave it to her... I then heard her drop a comment that sounded like she was trying to sound flirtatious, but... I honestly don't think anyone was going to notice, or really care. Especially after what had just happened... 'I guess I'll have to wait until the rest have left... After all, I don't want Steven or any of the others to know about that, and get me killed...'

Steven

When each of the attacks began to hit the large behemoth, a smirk had grown on Steven's face... However, it only grew in size upon the crunching noise he heard as he began to crush the neck... As the large, massive glowing soul appeared, he began to grow more and more excited... And then, it was over. He woke up, his head on a desk... Was that all a dream? Bah, he'd find out later. As he looked around, the rest of the class was doing the same, however, there was something he noticed; The group was smaller than it was when they entered the original room, and the cloaked man's voice seemed... Calmer, and less demented... He had several questions he needed to ask, yet, either none of them were for the cloaked figure, or he didn't feel confident in asking them... However, he did have one for Hason, and he would have some form of an answer that night... Either way, he remained silent, just sort of... Thinking.

The silence was quickly broken however, when a few desks over, a girl asked about her shirt, wondering where it was. He glanced over, but just shrugged and proceeded to look back to his desk, then to the cloaked figure at the head of class. He heard more conversation from them at the back of class, something about one of them giving the other a shirt to wear, and then from what he could tell they dropped a comment that could have been taken in less than a flattering manner. He had to wonder what kind of person they had to be, to at least appear completely fine after that...

The explosion rocked the chamber, throwing Warren away from the beast and splattering him with warm, sticky blood. He hit the ground hard enough to bounce and roll several more feet, laughing hysterically the entire time. "Where's your fist now? Oh that's right, over there, over there, and over there! AHAHAHAHA" He didn't notice that his scythe wasn't there, nor the fact that he was now alone in the hell as he laughed to himself.

A familiar voice sounded far off in the back of his mind, but he couldn't remember quite place it."Warren..."

"Hey voice, did you see me blow him up?!" It was like... BOOM!

"Warren, wake up..."

Hearing it again caused him to hesitate, he wasn't sure why. Why would they want him to wake up? He didn't think he was asleep, but the more he looked around the less things made sense. The rivers of lava turned into desks and chairs, the tower of flesh became a tower of old books, and he realized his arm was back. He wiggled his fingers. Yup, all ten fingers were working. That meant...

None of this was real!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Warren woke up just in time to be smacked in the face. Hard. He jerked up, eyes spinning around the room wildly. Yeah, they were definitely in some kind of lab. He saw that pile of books that bad been the tower of flesh off in the corner, and he saw a very pissed off Silene in front of him. The pale expanse of her stomach was visible to the world, along with the lower half of her bra.

Silene hugged him fiercely, squeezing the air out of his lungs with surprising strength. Then she smacked him again, leaving him with a hand imprint on both sides of his cheeks. "Really, Warren? 'Did you see me blow him up'?" She was angry that he had scared her, but mostly she was overwhelmingly happy that they were both alive and had achieved Soul Resonance.

Warren shrugged, rubbing his cheek and tossing another stick of gum into his mouth. "That was a damn good explosion, even if it wasn't real. Speaking of which..."

Meister and weapon simultaneously turned towards the front of the room to demand an explanation, but he had already launched into one. He explained that it was a test and that the others had failed and that was why they were gone (Silene hadn't noticed in her effort to wake her meister, but sure enough the only other people there were Jessie, Alex, Hason Steven), but they had passed by performing soul resonance.

Warren blew it off, unphased by the revelation, but Silene was pissed off. 'They put us through that... that hell as a TEST?!' She was ready to stomp up there and give the stranger a piece of her mind when Jessie suddenly spoke up from the other side of the classroom.

"Besides, I'm used to wearing less than that."

The comment made Silene realize that the entire class could see her bra and she blushed brightly. Warren held something out to her.
"No, I don't want any gu-"

"Just take it, it's my fault your shirt is ripped up. I'll buy you a new one before we go home." In his hand wasn't a stick of gum but his trench coat. She took it with a small, thankful smile and slipped it around her small frame. It swallowed her completely, dragging the ground and sliding up over her hands. Either way, it covered her up.

"Thanks, Warren."

"No problem."

The Stranger got up and walked around the room, reading their souls once more.

Alex, you shirts are on the floor. You barely threw them away. Jessie, please put yours back on. That is highly inappropriate. Warren, yes it was not real, except for the soul resonance. I suggest you practice more. The form was a tad sloppy. Silene, top notch first aid work. Hason, see me after, I have some concerns to share with you. Nothing seriuos. Steven, I think your cats are hungry about now. Might want to stop and get them some food. I'll loan you some cash, but I want it back by the end of the week. That pretty much sum it all up for you? It was a test, you were put through hell.

The stranger seemed to switch.

Now, leave my sight before I make sure your minds never recover.

Have a nice night.

He went back to the front of the room to fill his report. Elsewhere in the academy, Carter was on his way to the bio lab to recieve stranger's report. Merlin was not too far behind, though he was looking for a way out to go meet these special students.

Alex looked around the room and found her shirts in the back corner.”What? Oh. Umm . . . thank you.” She put her knit tunic on and carried her overcoat over her arm. Jessie took her grey sweatshirt back and tied it around her waist. The two then seemed to have a conversation purely through subtle gestures which ended with Jessie putting her sweatshirt on properly - although unzippered.

They must think we’re crazy.

Jessie smiled as she pulled her arms through the sleeves. Let them. “Well, shall we get going?” she asked while already in the hallway. ”I don’t know about you guys, but I’d like to keep my mind intact.”

"My thoughts exactly." Silene grabbed Warren, pulling him unwillingly through the hallway, past Jessie. "You owe me a new shirt."

Warren slouched his shoulders, letting himself be dragged along. "Can we at least get some food first? I'm starving. Besides," he gave her the once over. "I think you look good in my coat."

Silene smirked at the compliment, her cerulean eyes twinkling mischievously. "No, that was my favorite shirt you lazy bum. We're getting a replacement before we do anything else."

Warren heaved a sigh, but he was smiling as she dragged him out. He regretted a lot of things in his life, but the choice to leave his family wasn't one of them. This kind of life was a lot more fulfilling than the one he had lived before all of this, before Silene. "Hey Silene?"

"Yeah?"

"Want a piece of gum?"

As the figure began to walk around the room, all the while talking, I began to get up... And then, he got to me. He stated that I should see him after everyone left, saying he had something to tell me... I felt myself begin to tense up at this, and my breathing becoming slightly strained, however I attempted to return to my normal manner as fast as I could... I would say I wondered what he was going to talk to me about, but... It was rather obvious, wasn't it? He was going to ask me, before I could ask him...

Steven

Steven was almost reclined in his chair, still a bit tense after the whole ordeal... Something about the figure caused him to feel off, as if still cautious, but he attempted to ignore that feeling for now... He was rather curious about what the cloaked figure wanted with hason, but when the stranger reminded him about his cats however, his eyes seemed to widen... He had forgotten to feed them! Or at least, he had forgotten to feed one group. When the cloaked figure offered him money to go get the cats some food, he nodded, taking it quickly, a joyous and grateful tone to his voice as he thanked the figure. "A-Ah, I forgot... Thanks for reminding me, and I'll try to pay you back as soon as possible...!"

Upon the stranger seeming to switch, and begin to urge them to leave, he complied; Getting up from his desk, and moving into the hallway. He began to almost sprint down the hallway, after all, he had to get to somewhere with cat friendly food, before everywhere closed.

The Stranger put up a hand to calm Hason. He then reached into a small fridge under his desk and pulled out a water bottle. It had Lord Death's face on it, with a giant cranberry in his hand.

No need to be afraid Hason. I know you're a witch. I'm not going to kill you.

He tossed the flavored water to Hason, and pulled out another for himself. He briefly uncovered his face to take a drink, seeming satisfied.

Instead I want to study you. Carter is on his way here, and he may have some reservations. Do not worry, I just want to run a couple of tests to gauge how far into magic you are. I promise nothing bad will happen. Of course, you have the option to refuse, and I can simply tell him you're an exemplary student. Unfortunately, you only have a good three minutes to decide. He walks briskly.

The Stranger returned to his book "Experiments in Dissection" by Franken Stein, awaiting an answer.

I must have tensed as he spoke those words... He knew I was a witch, he truly did. As the other tossed the bottle, I caught it, examining the bottle. It was flavored water, cranberry to be exact. I unscrewed the cap, and took a quick sniff of the contents to check for anything...Malicious. Upon there being no ill contents, I took a quick sip of the drink, promptly screwing the cap back on... As he began to speak again, he proposed an offer; He wasn't going to kill me, or simply let me die here, but he did want to see how far into the magic arts I was. He assured me it would just be harmless tests, and... I believed him. After all... 'What's life without a little risk?. As I spoke, there was a lack of emotion, save for a small amount of caution in my tone. "I... Guess since you're going to let me live, allowing you to run a couple tests is the least I can do, huh...? You have my permission."

Carter entered the room. Merlin however, disappeared.

For the life of me, why did I choose him again?

Because you used to be a nice little boy before you graduated from DWMA. Let him be, you're not going to need him tonight. I wanted to show you this witch...

Carter got into a battle stance, but the Stranger put up a gesture to assure his safety.

Calm down, she's harmless...mostly. She is a rare one, able to wield a weapon without trouble, while holding a deep well of magic within her.

No.

The Stranger looked at his boss in confusion. Did he actually just say no without hearing him out?

You know how it works. They're evil. All they want to do is destroy. It was thanks to a witch that a Kishin was revived in this world. Or did you forget that in history?

Carter, I have a firm belief that not all witches are evil. This one shows great resolve not to use her powers unless it's life or death. And one with her abilities is even more rare. Imagine the possibilities.

Carter lowered his guard.

You make a good point. I'm not going to like it, but I'll allow you to do what you need.

The Stranger clapped his hands together.

Wonderful. Now, all I need to do is see you power. Hason, I want you to launch your Maw attack at me. Don't worry, I'm well aware of the risk. Carter, you may want to get out of the way.

Carter had a seat in the back of the room. Merlin was following Warren and Silene, making sure to stay out of sight. He seen something in Warren that he liked in particular.

As the headmaster, the one who had told a speech in the beginning of the day, entered the room, I tensed up, and began to sit... Rather still. Throughout the conversation, be it an argument, or just a heated discussion, between the two, I was careful as to not make any sudden movements... After all, I'd like to live, and the headmaster seemed... Rather jumpy. As the cloaked figure requested I fire an attack at him, I have to say I was rather shocked at this. Though, I guess the best I could hope for at this point was living through this night, huh? As I got up from my seat, I lowered my soul protection, cringing a bit as I did so, as all of the electricity in the school was very quickly making itself known to me. After a few seconds however, the feeling seemed to pass, and I held out my hand, water beginning to form from nothing in front of my hand. As it grew in size, I began to count down, hoping that I was clear in the fact that I was charging it to it's fullest power. "Five...Four...Three...Two...One...Go." And with that, it was off, and I watched as a rather large maw, similar to that of a shark's and about the size of the desk I had been sitting in, was sent from my hand, hurtling towards the cloaked figure.

The Stranger kicked up his desk and blocked the attack.

Soul Protection and a strong projectile attack. Water based, aligned to a shark. This is rather exciting. Not only do you know an advanced technique like soul protection, but you're able to generate an attack from raw magical power. I can also see the pull it has on you for using it. Just like a shark, you can see electrical currents, though the effect seems to wear off when you cast your protection. You're not too far into the magical arts. It's just a large well of magical energy. May be to dangerous to test further. Thank you Hason.

Carter was stunned. He never seen a witch with this much power. Was she really an amateur?

This is a rare opportunity. To be able to study a living breathing witch. I already have a thesis: Is it possible to remove the pull of magical destruction without ridding you of your abilities? Hason, if you wish to continue on other days, I will be glad too. Meet me once a week, every friday right here. I will have the room set up in a way for you to use your abilities...

ENOUGH! I will not allow a witch to grow stronger in my school!

Can you imagine the strength she would have as a meister that can wield magic? She could possibly become the greatest warrior in the world.

While risking our well being. Stranger, we have first years here. If she grows out of control, who knows how many lives she would take before either of us stopped her!

The two debated back and forth, throwing reasoning after reasoning. There seemed to be a stalemate.

Merlin walked up to Warren.

Hey, kid, want some gum?

Merlin held out a piece of special gum. Anyone who chews it feels a rather painful explosion of flavor. He smiled like the joker he is.

Silene shuffled through another rack, trying to find a new shirt. She had her shopping method down to an art, cursed gifted with the ability to tell how an outfit would look on her with a single glance. Nothing really stood out to her. 'Too skimpy, too revealing,' she stopped on one outfit, taken aback that anyone would call what was basically a lacy bra a 'top'. "Hmmph, this is pointless! This store was made for whores!"

Warren looked at Merlin, slightly surprised one of his Headmaster's was at the store, much less offering him gum. He could tell just by the scent of it it wasn't a regular stick (he had memorized them all), but either way... What could go wrong?

"Sure, thanks."

He popped it into his mouth.

'Okay, two more racks. Hopefully they have somethin-' Silene was ripped violently from her own thoughts when an explosion rocked the store and Warren went flying by, knocking over half of the stores product line. "Warren!" She bolted over to his side, her left forearm already a scythe-blade, but he didn't even notice her as he rose. He was the most focused she had ever seen him as he rose like a zombie, stomping over to... their Headmaster?

Warren shoved a finger in Merlin's face, his hair disheveled and his face dark. "That was," His violent appearance suddenly changed completely, turning into an extremely wide smile that revealed his soot-stained teeth. "the best gum I have ever tasted! What brand is it and where can I get it?"

Silene stared at him in amazement for a moment, her arm slowly reverting back to the normal. Afterwards, she just went back to looking for a shirt with a shake of her head, done with her meister for the night. "You're still paying for the shirt."

As the figure talked, I realized something; He hit the nail on the head with... Well, everything. I was about to agree to the cloaks terms, hoping to rid myself of that wretched effect... And then the headmaster spoke, saying that he would not allow it, alluding to my death being the only solution. I... Should have stayed quiet as they spoke. But... I couldn't. Something wouldn't allow it, something in my head just... Egged me on. Something snapped within me, as my emotions were flipped on their head at every turn today... And I was going to at least attempt to put an end to it here. As I spoke, I felt my head begin to pulse with pain, and my tone sounded... Off. Not malicious, nor aggressive, but my voice sounded somewhat defensive, with a monotone base to it."Headmaster. Your reasoning is based off of the assumption that a witch only destroys, and is inherently evil. That they start off this way, and never cease to follow this this path. For the most part this is untrue, as what makes them this way is a combination of the world around them, and the pull of magic. As you know, or should know, the pull of magic grows with their age, time, and power, and effects their behavior and nature, tilting to be destructive. The Instructor here, is supposing that he strip the pull from me, and possibly even other witches, allowing less blood to be shed."

As that last line was uttered, the pulsing pain seemed to... Dissipate, however, I wasn't done speaking. As I continued, a somewhat more fearful tone kicked in, however I attempted to eliminate it. "I... Would also like to bring up, that based on what the... I paused for a second, recalling to what the headmaster had called him, before continuing on. "...Stranger, said a few minutes ago, that he can sense the pull it has on me, right...? Wouldn't that allow him to sense, or see if it were growing too strong before he could remove it, and stop me, prior to taking any lives?"

Jessie ran over to where Warren and Silene were. "What did Warren do this time?" At the mention of "gum", Jessie stopped chewing hers - Warren had her craving this stuff now. After a few seconds, she shrugged and spat it out. "How's the shopping coming along? Doesn't look like you've found anything you like yet." She took a pack of gum out of her pocket and put a piece in her mouth. "Y'know, I heard that 'whore' comment earlier. I could've told you that. I mean, I shop here all the time, and look at what I'm wearing," she said while turning to give Silene a profile view of her skimpy green top.

Carter was stunned by the young meisters sudden outburst. He felt rage well up inside of him, and surprisingly, respect. He looked to the stranger, who shown his eyes for the first time. Black as the abyss, yet calming.

Fine. You can go on with the experiment. However, If she gets out of control, it's your problem.

Carter got out of his seat and left the room. Merlin was shocked at the boys reaction, then started to smile. For the first time in his long life, he found the one who would carry on his legacy for all time, or at least until he passes it on himself to infinity.

Here, you can have all I got on my. I have about three full packs left. What's your name, son?

He handed the gum over to Warren.

Warren took the pack of gum gingerly, like one would a newborn child. His eyes were filled with soft, unadulterated love as he marveled at the package - decorated with biohazard symbol symbols and bold red characters that read "DANGEROUS! NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION!". 'God is real and he is merciful...'

He was broken from his reverie when Merlin spoke, jumping in surprise and shoving the package into the deep pockets of his sweat pants. "Warren Renniger, scythe meister." He normally was not this respectful or attentive, but anyone who would gift him explosive gum deserved it.

Silene shook her head in exasperation, still watching Warren's antics from across the store as she shopped and talked (yes, she was a very good multi-tasker thank you very much). "Being a lazy bum, like usual." Her words were insulting, but by her tone it was obvious she didn't mean it.

"Nope, haven't had much luck here." She blushed heavily at the whore comment, struggling to find an answer. "I-I didn't mean it like that! I have nothing against revealing clothing, your top is fine, I just don't wear it myself!" She tried to change the subject, rummaging through the pocket of Warren's coat and pulling out his wallet triumphantly.

"I have his card, we could go shopping if you know any stores. I don't get much girl time, so it'd be a fun way to get to know each other!"

Jessie laughed at Silene’s comment about her clothing. ”It’s fine. I get shit for it all the time.” She cracked a smile as Silene took Warren’s wallet. ”And you’re sure you’re not dating?” She giggled. ”I know a few places you might like. Hold on.” She pulled a bright orange and very skinny bikini off the rack. ”I do need a new one of these…” She turned over the price tag and her gum almost fell out of her mouth. ”A hundred-fifty for this thing? I don’t think so.” She put it back and grabbed Silene by the wrist, dragging her out the door and down the street with a huge grin. ”Anyway! Alex found a place just down here, it’s where she got her red and blue sweater. You’d like it more than Death’s Tops and Bottoms. Speaking of which, have you seen her? I think she wandered off after we left the school.”

Merlin laughed at Warren's Earnestness. He wrote on a small piece of paper "One week , meet me after your class outside the school. I will teach you how to not only make the gum, but a few other fun things." He wrote it fast, and it came out sloppy, but almost readable. He handed it to Warren. He had to be quiet because his meister was probably looking for him, and anyone in the city would alert him immediately. He walked away as if nothing had happened. He didn't notice that some people were looking at the MASSIVE hole in the wall.

The stranger got up and started to head out of the room.

We can start our tests as soon as you're ready. I'll give you three days to prepare, but you can ask for longer if you wish. I need to prepare some things before we can start.

He left the room, disappearing into he night.

Warren took the paper and shoved it into his pocket, staring at the hole the man left in the wall with admiration. 'Maybe this school won't be so bad after all...' He turned, scanning the now desolated store for his weapon partner, but he found nothing. Shrugging, he reached into his pocket for a new piece of gum, fingers fumbling around to carefully extract a stick from the package- and he froze. "Where's my wallet...? SILENE!"

He tore through the night like a bolt of lightning, knocking over several pedestrians in his rush. "I JUST GOT PAID!"

"Good, you're here. Help me carry this stuff!"

Warren whipped around fast enough to give himself whiplash at the sound of his partner's voice, eyes dark as the thunderstorm they were usually compared to. He flinched back when he saw what she was wearing. Silene's old clothes had vanished, replaced by a purple t-shirt, tight black jeans, and glossy purple sneakers. In both hands she gripped big bags, filled to brim with what he could only assume was more clothes. "How much did you spend?"

"Four hundred, give or take."

"F-four hundred?" Warren fell to his knees, clutching his chest. So this was how he was gonna die, a dumb-ass weapon induced heart attack. His family would rejoice that the bastard was dead, throw a grand old part. He supposed it was for the best.

"Oh, stop being a baby. It's your fault for leaving me your wallet, you know how I am." She toed him with her new shoes, motioning for him to get up. "C'mon, this stuff is heavy and we're still a few blocks from home." She dropped the bags on top of him, sighing in relief.

"Man, I wanted to relax tonight." Warren cracked his neck, a strange gust of wind kicking up the tail of his coat. "Did you have to spend all the money?"

"Shut up, it's your fault for leaving it in your pocket. You know how I am." Silene was nervous, hugging herself and rubbing a circular, comforting pattern in her arms. The entire assignment felt wrong. The building in front of them looked like it had been abandoned for ninety-years; the paint and shingles were rotted and peeling off, the windows were boarded up with splintered slabs of wood, and the once-bright red door hung from one hinge, creaking eerily as it swayed in the wind. The weeds in the yard were wildly overgrown, roots traveling into the house itself, and an abandoned tricycle missing a wheel lay under what was left of the archway, streamers flapping wildly. "Can we just get this over with?"

Warren nodded, picking up on her unease. "Yeah, the drive back to New Death City is gonna take long enough, so we need to kill this kishin egg fast. I want some sleep tonight." He shoved his hands in his pockets and walked up the cracked, cement path. The closer he got, the more the wind seemed to pick up until, blowing his hair and cloak around willy-nilly. It abruptly stopped when he stepped onto the porch and shoved the door open, causing him to pause. Something was wrong.

"Warren behind you!"

Before Warren could react, something smashed into him from behind. His head felt like it had been split in half; vision swimming, he struggled to locate what had struck him before a big, grimy hand closed around his throat. He almost puked at the sight of what held him. Had he not been raised around Third Degree burns and explosive wounds, he might have. The creature behind was his height and roughly humanoid, wearing a black-and-red sweater, brown trousers, and worn work books. A clawed-glove was on his right hand, the blades grating together like nails on a chalkboard. The worst all though, by far, was his skin. It was charred completely, filling the room with the stomach churning scent of burning flesh, and muscle tissue showed through more of the severe spots. A sadistic grin light up his face, a snake-like tongue slithering out. "It's Kreddy, bitch!"

The blade of a scythe suddenly ripped through one of the kishin egg's arms, forcing him to release Warren. The meister leapt back, floorboard creaking underneath him. "Are you alright?"

"Yeah," he murmured, slightly winded. "Thanks, now transform."

"Right!"

Warren spun the scythe around him when his hands closed around it, immediately forcing Freuger to step back to avoid being shredded. "Lets end this fast." He lunged forward, swinging a sideways strike.

"Not so fast," Kreddy blocked the strike with his clawed hand, grinning. "Die bitch!" He jabbed at Warren's stomach, blades pressed together to resemble a thick knife.

Warren stepped to the side, the blow shredding a piece of his coat as it grazed by him, and brought up his fest directly into the kishin egg's chest. "Hexanite strike!" The explosion from his palm discharged directly into Kreddy, lifting him off his feet and sending him flying directly into the stairs, which shattered them.

"It's over now."

"I don't think so." Warren glanced around cautiously, eyeing the wooden wreckage for his opponent. It didn't move, but somehow the burnt man appeared behind him, claws arcing down in a slash. He didn't have time to block, so he braced for impact. The claws dug scoured over his shoulder, slicing through the skin, but the rusty blades weren't sharp enough for anything fatal. "Now it's over!"

He spun around, scythe blade lopping off the marred head of Kreddy Freuger. It rolled to the ground, coming to a stop several feet away, eyes looking directly at them, and winked. Then the entire body dissolved, leaving nothing but a dark red soul. Silene transformed into her human form, walking up and crouching down to pick it up, then consumed it. After she had, she turned back to her meister, eyeing his wound. "We have a first aid kit in the car, I'll bandage it up before we leave."

Warren rolled his shoulder in attempt to blow it off. "I'll be fine."

"Tough talk for a lazy bum."

"Last I checked, you were bumming money off me."

"Ugh, you never change!" Silene motioned towards the door. "Lets go, this place is giving me the creeps." She walked out the door, Warren following close behind her. Two souls down, ninety-seven more and a witch's to go.

Hason
I...Don't know what came over me, but something caused me to... Snap earlier. I wasn't sure why I had spoken like that, to the headmaster of all people, but it felt... Good... I couldn't' do that again. As the Stranger left, I slowly left the room, and began to head back to the dorms... This had been an interesting night, hadn't it? I had three days, three days until we began to find a way to stop it...

The next night
Steven and Hason

The atmosphere was quiet, and calm as the waves washed up along the shore... Steven and Hason had been directed to this city, called Wilgebater. It was said that this was the city where a Kishin Egg was going to strike next; The name we were given for the egg, or criminal, was named Naut Ilias. The city itself was a port city, with a large beach, but the buildings of the city itself were run-down, and would break easily if anything large was to come into contact with them...

At this point, all that they were waiting for, was for it to make his appearance, standing on the dock away from the shore. Steven was even already in his weapon form, and Hason in a stance, waiting for a sign... They had to stop it. As they continued to wait on their target, Steven began to talk, a questioning tone to his voice. "Hey, Hason... I've been meaning to ask, what was The Instructor talking to you about after maintenance yesterday? It took you awhile to get back to the dorm." Hason began to respond, her voice a bit hushed. "I... It was about... I'll tell you l-"

As she went to finish her sentence, they heard an earth shattering noise... Footsteps, from the water. Hason immediately began to walk towards the water, trying to get a better look at their target. What she saw wasn't pleasant,  an anchor larger than the meister herself slamming into the soil, and digging in. There was a chain attached to it, and a being... No. A suit of armor pulled itself towards it at blinding speeds, glaring around the city, glowing eyes only pointing to a being inside the armor... The armor itself appeared to have been through a lot, being rather rugged and broken, including that the tubing that would have held it together was long gone, a blueish glow in its place... As the being looked around, it locked eyes upon the dock, eyes meeting with Hason and Steven's; It had found it's next target.

As the being began to walk towards the dock, Hason jumped off the dock itself, landing on the shore. As her feet touched the shore, the being raised a leg, before stomping on the ground. The force of so caused the ground to begin to crumble, and water to shoot up with great force around Hason, however it didn't land. She stopped moving for a second as the being continued to near, and reared Steven back, before throwing him with great force towards the being. In response, the being did similar; Throwing his anchor towards her, the anchor knocking Steven aside with ease. Hason was forced to begin running to her right swiftly, as for the anchor not to plow into her completely. As the anchor collided with the dock, the being pulled himself to the dock, slamming into, and through it, causing the dock to begin to crumble around him.

As Hason continued running, she pulled on Steven's chain, bringing the large chakram back behind as she ran. She was going to have to play a bit differently, as he would simply block her attacks with the large anchor... But she had a plan. A grin grew on her face, and she began to taunt to the armor as it began to climb out of the docks. "Hey, Jackass! Try and hit me with that Anchor this time, you gave me way too much time to r-"

Her sentance was cut off as the anchor was once again propelled at her, to which she once again ran; However, she did something different this time. She turned around as soon as the anchor collided with the building behind her, throwing Steven with all her might. Steven worked in sync with her, the blades beginning to rotate faster and faster as they neared the chain, draping over the anchor's chain and sawing through it with speed unmatched, disarming the large suit of armor. As Hason whipped Steven back, she wasn't met with the pleasant voice she had expected; No. She heard Steven's voice... Quivering, afraid. "Hason...I...I heard it... I heard them... There were people in that house. Innocent... People."

At this, she realized something; She wasn't still on the shore like she had thought. They had somehow made their way to the edge of town, and the being was simply... Walking through houses. demolishing them to get to his anchor... And to them. As he picked up his anchor, he turned to them, watching as Hason and Steven began to move back towards the shore, a bit of a disgusted look on her face. Something had egged her on to continue fighting in the city, to watch as the being continued to cause destruction... Something brought her pleasure, watching the armor plowed through the buildings just to follow her... She had to get away. She couldn't give in into it.  "Here, go check for survivors and get people out of the city... Don't worry about me, I'll be fine.

As she spoke those words, she threw Steven. He normally would have gone back to her, he felt like he should have... But, something in her words told him not too. Something in her words filled him with hope, even as the being followed her to the large body of water...  He believed she would follow through with her words, and so he did as he was told; He went off into the city, and began to gather the survivors from each house, and brought them to safety at the other edge of town, ready to escape if it showed back up.

As Hason stood at the edge of the water, she watched as the dive suit continued to grow nearer to her, and then, it did something she hadn't expected; It slammed the anchor into the ground, and a shock-wave was sent out towards her, water and earth shooting up from the ground as one. She jumped back, disabling her soul protection and noticing something; There wasn't much electricity in the area, the town barely had any, however, the armor... Had a good bit. The blue glowing joints, along with the eyes were where the electricity was most notable, and it was going to make her job easier. However, that wasn't why she disabled her soul protection. See, the shark that she had summoned, and landed on, and was now floating on was why she disabled it.

This shark confused the being, and caused it to follow, until it was about waist deep, and the shore was barely in view. This, would be where the fight would end... Or so she hoped. As she neared the being, it swung the anchor rather slowly, giving her time to dodge, and even get behind it. The shark's maw opened as it closed in on the beings back, ready to dig it's teeth into it... And then, what appeared to be a translucent green shield appeared around the being, causing the shark to impact with it, and continue to push. It pushed, and pushed until the being was barely visible, lifting itself and and removing itself from the being's shield. The being seemed to walk farther into the water, causing her to follow overhead on the shark, waiting to see... Well, anything. What she wasn't ready for, was when an anchor slammed through the water, hitting the shark and her, sending her flying and causing the shark to disappear.

As Hason began to float through the water, she began to sink, closing her eyes as she did so... She had to locate him; She had to see the largest mass of electricity. She felt something, something strong walking towards her... Fast. It was fast. She began to channel something in the water; She wasn't sure if it would go off since she was in the water, but it was her last hope to kill this thing... She wasn't even sure if she wouldn't drown. As the being neared her, she heard it speak for the first time as it reared it's fist back towards her... The voice echoed through the sea, reverberating off of every point, a deep rumble to it's tone. The sound almost assaulted her, slamming into her with a force much like a blow. "Fear the weight of the ocean."

This was her signal... This was the do, or die moment, as she unleashed a maw larger than she had seen before, ripping through the water with force greater than expect... And with that, the electricity disappeared. She could no longer feel the being, however, there was something smaller; Something... Warm to the touch that she felt, and clutched it in her right hand. It was a soul, a Kishin Egg she had to get back to Steven, or this would have been for nothing... With her left hand, she summoned a shark, and gave it a command; Saying for it to take her to the surface. To take her to the shore... Return her to Steven. And so, it did. She grabbed onto it with her left hand, and it did... And as it neared the shore... Everything went black for her, as she lost the last of her oxygen as the beast neared the surface.

As she neared the shore, there was Steven was waiting for her, and collected her from the shark... He wasn't sure where that sea creature had come from, or why it would help her, but he would question that later; He had to make sure she was alive. As he dragged her onto shore, he began to check for life, checking for a pulse and listening for breathing... He realized he was going to have to do something he didn't want to do, but would possibly save her life if she had almost drowned; He was going to have to perform CPR.

Skipping the details on how exactly it was done, Steven's face lit up with a grin as Hason began to breath again, coughing a bit before taking heavy breaths, and then steadily breathing... As she began to breath again, there was something he noticed, something was glowing... He hadn't noticed it earlier, but she was clutching a Kishin egg within her hands, and his grin only grew wider at that. She had done it... She had killed the beast. He slowly removed the kishin egg, and consumed it as he did; Adding it to the length of his chain. After that, he did the best he could, and merely transported him and herself to their dorm, where he then began to await her awakening.

Upon Hason's awakening, she was surprised to see that she was alive at all, and was pleasantly surprised when she was in her bed, somehow dry. She looked around for a bit, a bruising pain in her side where she had been hit with the anchor, and began looking around. Across the room, sat Steven, on his bed staring at her, a bit of a... Smug look on his face. "So, I'm just gonna jump right in with these questions. All right? All right. So, first off, I'd like an explanation of how you defeated the Kishin egg. Then, I'd like to know about the shark that carried you to the shore."

To this, he was met with a bit of a disappointed look from her, however... She knew something. She could keep lying. She could come up with excuses... But why? She could trust him, couldn't she...? He was her partner after all. She spoke, a bit of a cautious tone to her voice. "I can answer both of those with...A single...Sentence..." Her voice turned a bit quieter, to a hushed tone as she continued. "I'm...A witch.

The reaction she got wasn't one she expected; it wasn't of fear, hate, or even laughter as if he was joking. His face changed; To one of a bit more serious of a tone. There was a quiet moment between them as he placed his words around in his mind, but he spoke a sincere tone to his voice. "...I uh, I guess you're expecting me to lash out, or somethin' huh?" At this, she merely nodded, but he continued nonetheless. "To be honest, had it been someone else... I probably would have. But... Here's the thing. I'm here where I am... Because people are afraid of Demon Weapons. Afraid of our power, and the death we bring. You're here... Because witches are hated, because of their power, and the death they bring... It would honestly make me a hypocrite to say anything against ya', especially, if you're trying to make the world a better place. So, in other words, much simpler words... " His face changed to a more normal grin, a happy tone to his voice. "Money's in the desk over there, and I was thinking we could try lunch at  this really cool sea-food place I found. You up for it?" And with that... She nodded, a sincere smile on her face.

The rest of the night's not really of importance though, is it? They simply went to bed, trusting their partner a little bit more than before.

Jessie giggled at the sad, defeated man known as Silene’s Mule Warren. She thought about tossing her own bags onto him, but decided against it. Not in pity for him, though. He’s just not her slave. She stopped for a moment and put a hand on her hip. I should get a boyfriend, she thought. Then I’ll have someone to carry my shit around for me too. “Hey, wait up for me!”

”So Alex.”

”Yeah?”

”Where are we?”

”I have absolutely no idea.”

She reigned the horse in to a stop and lept off with Jessie following. They were at the edge of a fairly large city in the brown-green foothills, with small houses covering the incline. The roofs seem to flatten out into taller and taller buildings in the lower grounds. They were all so closely packed together, it almost seemed that you could run across them.

A large man with a glorious fu manchu sat in a decorated room with a book and cup of tea, channeling the great tactics of a great man. A god in his eyes. After hours of waiting, he closed the book and left the room, which was really a garden shed, and into the bustling city streets.

”Who are we fighting again?”

Alex rolled her eyes. Her sister was leaning against a wall with arms crossed over her chest. Bored, as usual. But Alex couldn’t blame her. She was about to braid her hair for the third time when an arrow flew into the wall beside her. The two reacted instinctively. Alex rolled towards Jessie, who she caught mid-air after transforming, and came to a crouch with an arrow drawn, aimed in the direction the first came from. It was probably a warning shot, so Alex sent out one of her own and bolted down a nearby alleyway.

Was that our target?

Probably. I don’t want to lose sight of him, though. I wonder where he-

Whoo-crunch

There! She let a return arrow fly, and this time she hit someone: tall, armoured, and carrying a bow of his own. The shaft had barely scratched the leather on his shoulder. Damn. We’re going to have to aim for somewhere between the-

He’s getting away! Run Alex!

He was fast for such a large man, and although Alex was faster, she had trouble keeping up with his knowledge of the city: turn this corner, avoid that crate, avoid getting run over by a car. All the while they fired at each other, and each time the shot went wide. Alex finally smartened up and gave up stopping to shoot. She couldn’t do it while running, not here at least. Too many things to trip over.

The man ran into a building, and Alex followed him up and up and up to the roof. Alex had him cornered - or so she thought. An arrow sailed right towards his head - and missed completely.

The fuck? He just leaped off!

Then go after him! He’s getting away Alex!

She peered over the railing. It was a good 15-metre drop, which wasn’t really that far. The target didn’t seem to have a very nice landing, as he was flat on his back on the next building. He landed a bit farther than Alex thought she would’ve been able to on her own. But with a bit of help . . .

”Jessie?”

She transformed into a human. ”I’ll kill you if you say that stupidly cliche line.”

Alex gave her a sly grin. ”Are you thinking wha-”

"Alex!"

”Hey, I deserve something after you scared me shitless last night.”

”This is not the time.” She put her back to the railing and crouched down with her hands in front of her. ”You can get me back after this, now hurry up and jump before he gets up!”

Alex nodded and took a few steps back. ”Ready?”

”Ready.”

Alex ran towards her sister, put a foot on her hands, and lept off them and over the railing. Jessie pushed up with all her strength and almost fell over backwards after doing so. She caught her balance and, like her sister, leaped over the railing with a running start. Their plan worked perfectly, because now the target was surrounded by two walls and two girls trying to kill him. He drew his sword and looked back and forth between the sisters. “An unfair battle is a battle without honour,” he said poetically.

”Well Mr. Kenkhis Ghan,” said Jessie as she casually strolled towards him, ”we don’t give a shit.”

Alex wrapped her arm around his neck - she had to jump up to reach him - and pulled his head down so his back arched backwards. While he was comprehending this surprise attack, Jessie gave Kenkhis Ghan a swift kick to the ro sham bo.

”Well, that was easier than I thought it would be.”

Alex nodded. ”How was his soul?”

Jessie made a sour face. ”Bitter. Old. Kinda dusty.”

”How was his soul dusty?”

”I dunno, you just have to experience it for yourself I guess.”

For a moment, the dull hoofbeats on the dirt road could be heard. Only a moment.

”So Alex.”

”Yeah?”

”Where did we get a horse?”

Mortecai looked a little more pissed off than normal the following morning. A couple days have gone by, and the class was smaller due to some students failing at maintenance. The sign on the door now read: Only I have an opinion. If you have one, it will be crushed out of you. It was rewritten on the board along with other rules he added over the last few days. Now he sat there, head in his arms, a vibe of fucks not given and asses needed kicking.

Alright, I have a hangover. Them hoes down at the death bar don't know when to quit. Anyways, I'm supposed to inform you of three new students. They can introduce themselves.

He waved at the door. Archie opened it, and was followed by three new people. One was a woman wearing some kind of officer uniform. She was smiling as she enetered.

Hello, I'm Malencia. Nice to meet you all!

Keep it the fuck down! I don't want to have to introduce you to Long John Masterbomb.

A slightly taller young man walked in after her. He was wearing an open shirt, showing off his carved chest. The women in the room seemed to all take notice instantaneously. He flashed a smile at a few of them, but stopped smiling once he laid eyes on Warren. Inside, he felt rage, but he regained his composure.

The names Dagen. I look forward to getting to know a few of you very soon.

He winked at some of the girls in the front, who swooned over him.

Jessie thought the girl was pretty cheerful. Kinda cute. And had really big . . . eyes. Yeah. She wasn’t jealous of her endowment anything.

The first guy . . .

”Jessie? Are you okay?”

She made some odd noises that sounded somewhere between a moan and a giggle. Alex could see why. I mean, I guess he is pretty handsome, but he’s not even wearing a shirt. Like, really?

Then the second boy walked in. ”I’m Dean,” he said, just loud enough to reach the end of the room, and then sat down in the closest empty desk he could find. He didn’t do or say anything else, just sat down.

Alex nudged her sister. ”That boy who walked in, he’s the one who . . . Jessie?”

Now she was resting her elbows on the table and her chin in her hands, staring at Dagen, taking in how strong he was, imagining how those muscles would feel . . .

”Jessie!”

”Huh?”

Alex pointed at the corner of her mouth. ”You’re drooling.”

Jessie sprung into action, wiping the entire bottom half of her face with her sleeve. Which was dry . . .

”Funny,” she said sarcastically as she leaned back in her chair.

”It actually was. Anyway, that boy who . . .” Alex sighed and shook her head. Jessie was off in her own world now, which probably consisted of herself and Dagen’s washboard abs.

Warren leaned his chair onto its hind legs, his feet on the edge of his desk to prop himself up. The injury on his shoulder had healed over quickly, so he had spent most of the time chilling in the apartment (save the couple times Silene had dragged him out). "Back just in time for the new students, huh?"

Silene nodded, seated beside him, staring intently at the door. The first girl that walked in was pretty, with big round eyes and short chopped blonde hair, dressed in a mustard yellow button up shirt that barely contained her breasts. She introduced herself energetically, but was quickly shot down by Mortecai. Typical.

Warren whistled low in appreciation at her... figure. "Look at those..."

Silene crossed her arms over her chest huffily as the next student walked in. He was significantly less noticeable, though he looked considerably like Warren (except scrawnier). He said little after his introduction, shuffling over to his seat. The final guy that entered was as flashy as the girl, wearing an unbuttoned red shirt that showed off his rock hard abs.  Slightly as a joke, slightly in spite, Silene slyly commented, "Look at those ab-"

BOOM!

Warren's jolted to his feet, the smoking remnants of his chair in a pile beneath him. His normally relaxed disposition was gone, replaced by the threatening aura one would expect from his clan. He stomped down the isle hard enough that each footstep was heard, the students nearest to the edge flinching away from him. When he reached the bottom, standing eye-to-eye with Dagen, he smiled and shook the man's hand, leaning close to his ear and whispering, "What the fuck are you doing here?"

Silene resisted the urge to follow her meister, on the edge of her seat biting her nails. She didn't sense the normal impending madness in his wavelength, he wasn't in real danger. This was pure, unbridled anger. She couldn't help him with that.

WILL YOU ALL SHUT THE FUCK UP! Warren, maintenance!

Dagen looked back at his old meister with a slight smile. He enjoyed what was going on. Malencia looked on in confusion, but her hands clenched, preparing to fight if needed.

Simple, I heard there was a new school, and I figured someone with my skill would make a good fit. Besides, I'm not here for trouble. I just want to learn. Like you. Right Warren?

What could barely be heard as a maintenance from Mortecai, who's head was buried far into his lap it seemed. Everyone assumed he was talking to Dagen.

Dagen, is everything alright?

Another maintenance shout was heard. Malencia didn't care. Her weapon was in trouble. Dagen didn't hear her though. His hands seemed to get hot, as if a flame had been starting up.

The sound of an explosion made Alex look up from her phone with a heavy sigh. Now what did he . . . he blew up his chair and got maintenance to shake this guy’s hand? She stood up - and got maintenance for it - and walked over to the boys to see if she could find out what the hell was going on between these two. ”So.” She leaned up against an empty desk behind her.

”Hey, my abs!”

”Maintenance.”

”God damn it!”

Alex pushed Jessie out of her mind and tried her best to focus on these two. Not easy for someone with ADD.  “So,” she said again, ”what’s the story between you two?” Whatever it was, it obviously wasn’t good. If eyes could actually shoot daggers, neither of them would have faces anymore.

Warren forcibly grinned, though he didn't look at Alex. It took all of his restraint not to let his wavelength loose and blast the smug smile off the arrogant bastard's face. Here to learn? Ha! Dagen couldn't learn anything if they glued a book to his face. "Dagen here was my weapon years ago," he grit his teeth as he spoke, turning his attention to Malencia. "He ever tell you about that? He's got quite the interesting past. His family sure did ki-"

"Warren, chill." Silene grabbed his shoulder, pulling him back from Dagen and inspecting his hand. There were small, light burns on his palm, but nothing that would severely bother him. She glanced back at Dagen, looking at him in a new light. So that was his weapon before her.

Frankly, she could see why Warren was pissed. The man just came off as arrogant, now that she was close to him. "I'm Silene, Warren's current partner. It's nice to meet you two."

Dagen calmed himself a bit to respond to Silene.

Thank you Silene. I must say, Warren has always had good taste.

He quickly looked her up and down, then met her eyes again. Malencia looked a bit peeved from this, and tapped his shoulder. Dagen looked to her, and looked at his hand. It looked like a miniature blast went off, but he ignored it.

Nice to meet you as well, Silene. I'm sure our boys can have a play date another time. Dagen, it's time to pay attention. She sat back, cross armed. Sure, they weren't together, but she wished he wouldn't hit on so many girls.

No problem. Silene... He winked. Warren, I hope we can all be good friends. He looked past them to see Jessie, and gave her a suave smile for good measure.

Jessie fell out of her chair with a soft thud.

Alex turned around for a second to watch that happen. She’s not really sure why she hasn’t simply decided to pretend her sister doesn’t exist for the time being. Speaking of which, she wasn’t feeling very acknowledged in this conversation. ”I’m going to make sure she’s okay,” and got up from the desk. Of course she’s okay. She’s more than okay staring at Hot-shot over here. She bent down and shook her sister. ”Jessie. Jessie, get up.” She turned Jessie onto her back - and immediately flipped her face-down again so she wouldn’t have to look at that stupid grin she had on her face. ”I’ll never understand you sister,” she muttered under her breath.

Warren growled at Dagen. "Don't wink at her you son of a bi-"

Silene cut him off. "Yeah, nice to meet you too Malencia. Sorry about Warren, he's generally not like this." Without further ado she dragged her meister back to their row, taking her seat.

Warren slumped into the seat beside her, fishing into his pocket and pulling out three sticks of gum. When he bit down, the explosion was audible, and a few people around him jumped. He munched away angrily, ignoring them.

Silene elbowed him, whispering as not to attract Mortecai's attention. "Hey, what was that about?"

Warren shrugged. "I'll tell you after class."

Silene hesitated, impatient, but she settled for responding, "If you put that much enthusiasm into work, I'd be a death scythe by now, you lazy bum!"

Warren did his best to ignore her, kicking his feet up, his eyes drifting shut as his head lolled back. He was suddenly very, very tired and in need of a good, long nap.

Mortecai shot up from his desk.

I was going to take it easy on you guys today. I really was. I was going to take a nap, and let you all fuck around until the bell rang, or let you go early. I decided that is bullshit, and I'm tired of all of your faces, especially you, Tits. So, Archie is gonna be your instructor today. He may not talk, so I'll help him out. See that orange. You get it, you can go. Good luck. I'm outta here.

Mortecai walked out of the room. Archie looked in stunned silence, then looked at his orange. Did his best friend really tell the students to take his orange?

You hear that Malancia, it's an agility test. Judging from this guy's build, I would say he isn't fast, but he's hiding something.

This should prove to be enlightening. Although, I'm not sure if the skinny man is actually fit to teach. Did he really refer to me as Tits?

Be proud of what you got. Now, let's see how everyone else responds to this test.

Right.

The two took a seat, watching, waiting. The previous few minutes were far from their mind. The other students seemed to be at the edge of their seats.

Alex lifted the limp Jessie into her chair and let her slump onto the desk, then sat down in her own. She stopped feeling embarrassed for her sister when she got maintenance. Wait a minute, Mortecai gave us double maintenance yesterday, which means we have maintenance today, and he gave us maintenance again so we’ll have it tomorrow too! She took a good, long look at Jessie, then sighed, stood up, and walked over to Warren. He reached into one of his pockets and pulled out a pack of gum. ”I’ve gotta cope with her somehow,” she said to a confused Silene, ”and I’m sure he won’t mind if I take a couple pieces.” She put a piece in her mouth on her way back to her desk and almost threw up right in front of her, but she kept on chewing. If it kept her mind off what a complete bimbo her sister was acting like, she’d do just about anything.

Dean, who had gone completely unnoticed throughout the entire class, transformed his limbs back to their proper form and placed them on the table. This is going to be an interesting class. He turned in his seat to look at the short, frustrated brunette going back to her seat, then down at his phone. I wonder if she’s busy after class...

Hason

I watched from the back of the class as several new students were introduced; One was a rather tall, busty looking chick with a somewhat light build. The other was a guy who sort of... Angered me, even caused me to feel somewhat disgusted. He was really showy in the way he dressed, and something about him just... Pissed me off entirely. I would soon find out, that I wasn't the only one who disliked him. Or so I thought. I watched as Warren jumped from his seat, incinerating his chair, and began to stomp down to the guy. I had assumed he would do something drastic; Do something violent, even. But instead, from what I saw, he just shook the guy's hand, and began to talk to him... I was somewhat curious as to what they were saying, but I would find that out later. Didn't really want to risk getting maintenance again, especially since I already had to go to the Stranger today.

As this went on, Mortecai began to speak, his words were loud, and angry as always... He said something about how he was done, something about how he would have let us just mess around, but they pissed him off or something, and that we could only leave if we got the orange. I assumed that he wasn't going to allow them to merely take it from him, but I did have to wonder... What would happen if we were to just... Ask for it? I guess doubt, is the only reason I didn't find out; Instead, I got up. No one else was going for the orange, everyone else just... Looked on in fear. All things considered, I should have just asked... But instead, I began to pace around, watching the orange... Waiting for the time to grab the orange from the instructor. As I walked, I noticed Steven was mirroring my pattern, and we were meeting on either side of Archie at each turn... About five rotations in, we made our move simultaneously; Both jumping towards him, and reaching for the orange, rather than continuing on the pattern.

Steven

Steven was sitting within the near middle of the class, a bit away from Hason. There wasn't a particular reason, he just sorta... Felt like sitting somewhere else. To his surprise, this was actually somewhat nice, as he got a better view of the 'action' that was about to take place. Mortecai had said something about three new students, however he only saw two. One of them, was a girl with a rather light frame, but was rather large in... Another area. He just sorta shrugged, and began to look around a bit to see just how many of the others were looking at her... Assets. The other, was a male, one who he thought was rather showy in his mannerisms and in the way he dressed. Steven himself, just sort of ignored what he had thought at first, figuring that maybe he should wait to get an opinion until he had met the guy.

One thing however, that caught his interest, was that Warren had jumped from his seat, the chair being left in a hulking mess. He watched as Warren stomped down, and was a bit interested to see the beating that he was about to give the guy... And then, he stopped. He gave the guy a handshake even. He watched as he began to tell the guy something. He couldn't tell what it was about, but they seemed to be getting a little... Heated. And then, Mortecai began to speak. Steven sort of... Slumped down into his chair as he said they had to get the orange from Archie. He watched as is partner walked from her place at the back of the class, and and began to pace at the front of class... No one else had gotten up, and he knew that she would most likely get annoyed if he didn't at least try to help her, so he did. He slowly got up, shaking as he did so, and began to mimic her pattern, going the opposite way... About the fifth rotation in, when they would have passed, instead, they jumped from either side of the large hulking man, arms outstretched to grab the orange... What fools to think it would be this easy.

Archie took note of the dual attempt by Hason and Steven. He spun on his heel, swinging his available arm into both of them, knocking them away. He then jumped back, keeping the orange in his hand. If this was going to be the lesson, then he might as well make it worthwhile. Dagen and Malencia stopped watching, and got up.

You see that Malancia?

I did. You have a plan?

It's a long shot. Hey, girl and guy, get up. Let's all go for it at once.

Some of the other students began to leave their seats. They surrounded Archie, circling him like sharks in the water. Dagen and Malencia were on opposite sides on each other, keeping an eye on the orange, and the area around them. Archie kept his guard up. At that moment, the tension rose tenfold.

Hason

As we lunged for the orange, I felt a thick pain embed itself in my side, and fling both myself, and Steven towards a wall. As we collided with the wall, and then the floor, I watched as several others followed our lead, and began to circle Archie. I also got to watch, as Steven jumped up almost immediately like a dumbass, and started circling Archie again. As I slowly got up, I leaned myself back up against the wall, and just sorta... Watched. I didn't really feel like getting the fuck smacked out of me again, once was enough, y'know? I do have to say though, I would be lying if I didn't have the biggest grin as Steven once again tried to jump towards the orange. I mean, I guess he was hoping others would follow his lead, and they would get the orange, but still, didn't seem like the smartest plan.

Alex put headphones in her ear, leaned back, put her crossed feet on the desk, and toyed with her phone. If this was supposed to be a lesson about teamwork or something, she wasn’t getting anywhere so long as Jessie acted like this. A dull thump went through her earbuds. She looked up at Archie, orange in hand, knocking Hason and Steven away. Other students stood up and began circling him. Alex shook her head and resumed doing nothing in particular.

Jessie crossed her arms and put them on the desk, then rested her chin on them and stared dreamily at the tall, muscular hunk of a man circling their teacher. She hoped he would smile at her again. And shirtless. Then her phone buzzed her back into reality.

Hey Alex. Are you busy after class?

Alex, she thought. I’m not Alex. Unless... she gazed over at her otherwise oblivious sister, a sly smile on her lips.

I think you have the wrong number. This is her sister, Jessie.

The next text was a bit delayed. OMG I am so sorry!

She giggled, thumbs tapping away. It’s okay, I’ll tell her you’re looking for her. What’s your name?

Thank you! Dean.

Jessie poked her sister in the shoulder. She mouthed the word What?, and Jessie showed her the screen. She read the conversation and immediately sat up and pulled out her earbuds. ”I did what!?!” Her hands were a blur when trying to send a text to him. Jessie almost fell out of her seat laughing.

Dean watched from the front-right corner of the room as Alex and a blonde girl, presumably her sister Jessie, reacted to the text messages. Alex seemed quite embarrassed while Jessie found it absolutely hilarious. Then he got a very apologetic text from Alex, explaining what happened the night before and why she wouldn’t be available after class.

What’s maintenance?

Trust me, you don’t want to know.

Dagen, Malencia and the other students lunged for the orange as well. Archie wasn't going to get out of this with a punch. Instead, he showed off his speed, dodging and weaving through the crowd, student after student flying past him. Dagen was shocked at the behemoth's speed. Malencia wasn't phased too much, and went for a second try, jumping off the wall she flew towards. Archie seen it coming a mile away, and swatted her to the side with no problem. A couple of students attacked from above. He hunched down, and as soon as they landed on his back, he catapulted them to the far side of the room. Three more went for either side of him. He fell onto his back, and rolled out of the way. They collided into eachother. Dagen positioned himself by Malancia, who recovered rather quickly from the hit.

Attack pattern, 1!

Got it!

Dagen sprinted towards Archie, and Malencia jumped into the air. Dagen's hand was now the barrel of his weapon form.

Take this. BARRAGE SHOT!

Four grenades flew out of the barrel, exploding onto the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust. Archie was on his toes, but Malencia dropped on him with an axle kick, surprising him. However, the hit wasn't enough to harm him. He grabbed her leg, and threw her towards where Dagen was. Dagen caught her, but the force alone sent them both flying away. They got up again, continuing the assault. The other students were determined as well, using their weapons to get that damn orange.

Silene absent-mindedly watched Hason and Steven scramble to get the orange, head propped up by her arm. She smiled; she was no strategist (that was Warren, for the most part), but their attempt was pretty comical. "Rushing up like that..." she whispered under her breath. Struck by a bout of curiosity, she shoved Warren.

The meister lazily craned his neck to face her, his eyes only half open. "What?" His voice was at its rawest when he was tired, the strange accent he worked so hard to hide creeping out. Silene preferred when he spoke like that; it was childish, but it was something only she ever heard and it made her feel special.

"They're just jumping at him to try for the orange. How would you go about it?"

Warren yawned loudly, stretching as he sat up. "I dunno, have they tried asking for it?"

"I'm serious, Warren!" Silene huffed and crossed her arms over her chest.

Warren held up his hands defensively. "I am too. The guy's been nice enough from what I've seen of him, it might work. Plus, " he motioned to the classroom. A kid went flying past him, hitting the back wall of the classroom with a resounding 'thwump' and sinking to the floor, unconscious. "They're just getting manhandled."

Silene winced at the poor kid, an idea coming to her. "Do you have any orange gum?"

"I think a piece or two, why?"

"Give it here!" Silene took the two pieces of orange gum eagerly and stepped away from her meister, rushing down the aisle, dodging flying students. When she got close enough to Archie he had just thrown another group of students several feet away, leaving just her standing there.

She held out the piece of gum, smiling sweetly. "I'll trade you, Mr. Archie! This orange-flavored gum for that orange." She held out the two sticks, both of which said long-lasting on the wrapper with orange shaded Death masks decorating them. "Please?"

Archie grabbed the gum, and crushed it, tossing it aside. What kind of person would hand him SYNTHETIC ORANGE FLAVORED GARBAGE? He continued to dodge and fight off the other students, hitting one directly at Warren, who he knew had the tainted filth on him. Dagen realized something in that exchange.

Hey, Warren! If I get the Orange, I get to date Silene, deal?

Shove off it Dagen.

He winked. They would need everyone to achieve this task. Dagen bombed the room, letting dust kick up everywhere. While everyone was distracted, he ran up to Silene, and kissed her on the cheek.

Alex brushed a lock of hair behind her ear and lowered herself in her chair. Jessie did feel a bit bad for laughing at her and made a note to make it back up to her. She’ll go out and get dinner or something. A few more ideas flowed through her head as she sat back down in her seat - and immediately she was up again.

”That son of a bitch!”

”Hmm?”

Jessie pointed at the front of the class. ”Dagen just kissed Silene on the cheek!”

Now Alex was on her feet. ”Excuse me?” She took a few steps forward and held out her hand, which Jessie landed in after transforming. Alex drew an arrow and fired it at Dagen’s neck. She knew before it left her hands that it was going low, but she didn’t care. Neither of the two did, so long as it hit him.

Rather than flinging each and every student around, I noticed that Archie began to dodge, and weave around the students... That was until one of them kicked off the wall, and he did the exact same thing he had done to Steven and I... I guess I was only half paying attention, though, as I didn't really see what had caused the thick cloud of dust that had been kicked up, causing me to begin coughing a bit... Man, whoever kicked up the dust was a jackass. Anyways, as the dust began to clear once again, I saw Silene walk up to the larger man, and offer him some sort of gum, to which he replied by taking the gum, crushing it in his hands, and tossing it aside. After that, I finally caught what had been kicking up dust; One of them had turned into a weapon, and was firing what I could only assume was grenades... How much did these guys want the damn orange?! Even Steven was dead set on getting it, turning his right arm into a chain and whipping it towards the orange as if to try and grab it...

Silene turned scarlet, her hands balled into fist as she turned to face Dagen, and swung a punch- only to have it halted by Warren. His face was as expressive as a slab of stone, one hand wrapped around her arm holding it back, the other clutching an arrow (where had that come from?). "Don't," he said quiet enough for only her to hear. "He's not worth the energy."

The scythe-weapon pulled back from her meister and his stony face, internally deflating. She had, secretly, hoped the kiss would get a rise out of him, but if it had it hadn't been the one she was looking for. He looked scary-mad. "Yeah, yeah you're right. Thanks."

She stormed away from the scene, surprised to find herself mad at Warren more than Dagen. She didn't know the two's history; he wouldn't tell her, but... Shaking her head, she plopped down in the seat beside Jessie and Alex, still looking rather gloomy. "Thanks for that shot, you two, I saw the arrow."

Warren turned back to face Dagen once Silene had stormed away, his eyes crackling as if they were a thunderstorm. The Grenade Launcher would have been familiar with the look, it generally signaled a lot of incoming destruction back when they were partners. "Don't lay a finger on her, Dagen. She's not like us, she's normal."
Title: Re: [RP] Soul Eater: New Earth
Post by: Tickles on March 09, 2015, 08:33:23 AM
Dagen smirked. All according to plan. Even the crazy chick with arrow got his blood rushing.

Don't worry old buddy. I shall not lay another finger on your wife. Now, let's get that damn orange already and go get some coffee. We really need to catch up.

Although Jessie seemed pissed off at Dagen, he made a face half apologizing, half flirting again. He needed Warren for this, although Warren seemed much different than before. Malencia noticed Dagen's face, and placed a hand on his shoulder. It changed almost immediately from a deranged smile, to a relaxed and level headed one. He knew exactly what she was thinking, and transformed into a full weapon, flying right into his meisters hand. Malencia's eyes turned a blood red, and the power radiating off the two was intense.

Warren, we just met, but you're going to have to work with us. I'll keep Archie on his toes, and back him into a corner. You grab the orange when the opportunity arises. He doesn't seem to intent on letting it get hit by anything.

She turned around, and faced Archie, still trying to keep the students off of him. He spotted the chain, and turned, taking the attack himself, the weapon bouncing off his skin.

EVERYONE, GET DOWN!

All the students realized what was going on, and got on the ground. One by one, Malencia lobbed grenades at Archie, pushing him back. He had his arm up, taking the blasts, guarding the orange as best he could. Hit after hit, he moved a couple of inches, until he could no longer move. She kept up the push, suppressing him until he held the orange in the air, outside the effect of the blasts. He covered his fingers over it, but they were slipping with each blast. It was only a matter of time until the orange would be free.

Warren, it's almost time. It's up to you now,

Malencia was caught up in the moment

COME GET SOME!

The rate of fire increased to a torrent of blasts, slowly tearing the room apart.

Alex almost tossed Jessie away. Instead, she abruptly dropped her and stomped back to her desk, hands in the air in defeat. She wasn’t sure what pissed her off more: the fact that her arrow didn’t hit Dagen, or the fact that Warren was able to catch that arrow mid-flight. I mean, the fuck was that? When did he suddenly become a super-human with better morals than her? . . . She spat her gum out of a hole in the wall and bit down into a fresh piece.

Jessie wasn’t faring much better. She transformed back with arms flailing around like a lunatic and swearing her mouth off as she stumbled forward. ”Did you see how he caught that fucking arrow? she said to Silene. ”How is that even possi-”

The shockwave of explosion after explosion knocked her off her feet. ”SHIT!”

Throughout the chaos, nobody noticed Dean calmly walk over to Archie, take the orange from his hand, and walk through a large space that was once a wall. He tossed the orange into the air a couple times, whistling as he walked across the field. Finally, he found an intact wall to lean against while he peeled and ate his prize. ”This is a good orange,” he muttered.

As the dust was kicked up farther and farther, the room began to get more, and more displaced, the explosions knocking away more and more of the room with each blast. Something about this seemingly filled me with glee. Something about this, caused me happiness, as less and less of the room was left standing. Similarly, I felt myself get a bit disappointed when they began to realize that the orange was missing, and the shots began to die down in frequency, until the shots finally stopped. It's a pity that they stopped so soon, isn't it?

As the dust finally cleared, I felt somewhat disgusted. Not at anyone in the room, no; I felt disgusted at myself... Ah, but enough of that. I began to look around the room for Steven, mainly so I could tell him that the orange was at least gone. Upon finding him, he was on the ground, somewhat dazed and confused. I spoke, my voice sounding somewhat confused. "Hey uh... What are you doing on the ground?" To this, he merely gave me the same stupid smile, a somewhat excited tone to his voice. "I uh... I might got flung off of Archie, and decided to just sorta... Stay there, for a bit. " To this, I merely shrugged, and just sorta got up, leaving him there. As I began to look around, I noticed something, or rather, someone, leaning against a wall. He was eating an orange... So that was who got it, huh?

Silene dug her heels into the ground to stay upright, laughing at Jessie's flustered display. "Yeah, he does stuff like that sometimes." She shouted over the chaos. "It doesn't surprise me anymore; he's a lot better at fighting than he lets on." That didn't say much, now that she thought about it. If you judged him off the way he acted he didn't even deserve to be a meister, much less in the school. He still hadn't told her what he had done to pass the exam.

She looked back at the fighting below to see what Warren was up to, but something caught her attention; "Where the hell did the orange go?!" Archie's hand, even if he hadn't realized it, was empty. The shockingly scrawny boy with the tie from earlier sat outside the school, munching on it.

"He walked up and grabbed it while Dagen was talking. Saved me from having to do much." Silene jumped. Warren had again appeared out of nowhere, his hands shoved into his pockets, smacking on some gum. "Sorry 'bout that whole fiasco, by the way. I know he's a prick, but you guys don't want to find out the charges around here for murder." The tone in his voice sounded like he knew firsthand.

Silene nodded. "Yeah, you were right. Though," she was curious now, she had to know. "Why did you stop us? I get you didn't want us to get in trouble, but you seemed ready to slaughter him a minute ago."

Warren shrugged, slumping down in a seat beside her, eyes glued to the scene below like a kid at a candy shop, and shrugged. "I didn't wanna allow that bastard any pleasure. He gets his rocks off on pain, his owns and others. He's a damn masochist."

Silene faded into thoughtful silence, studying her meister. His actions were sluggish like they always were, but he seemed upset. Only someone who really knew him would spot the tells: the shifting eyes, the knot in his jaw as he smacked his gum harder than normal, the outline of the balls of his fists in his pocket. Whatever Dagen had done, he was not happy. "Well let's hope we don't see him at maintenance, then."

"Yeah."

MEANWHILE, AT THE TOOLSHE-- I mean Maintenance.

Dagen and Malencia were outside the lab doors for maintenece. The doors seemed rusted for a new school, but the two didn't pay any mind to it. The doors opened, beckoning the two to walk in. Meanwhile, outside the stranger's illusion, Dagen and Malencia were sitting calmly in a chair, zoned out while the stranger worked his magic. The other students that were sent there, having passed their tests, were told to sit and get some work done for the next couple of hours.

For those that are paying attention, I am merely using my soul's wavelength and changing it rapidly to match and distort my target's waves. By doing so, I can create any reality I wish within their minds. The hypnosis is a calming wave I apply every so often to keep them pacified, while being sure the conscious part of the brain remains active, and switching them into their subconscious when appropriate. Those that have extended control over their soul's wavelength can achieve the same thing, however my illusion technique is about as unique as it gets. You may recall a meister from the past named Franken Stein. His soul was so flexible that he could match up with any weapon he sees, use them to their fullest extent, and negate soul wave's as well. I someday aspire to be like him, but using illusions is more of my thing. Dissection was his. If you're interested in learning about him further, I have many of his books, along with his autobiography on one of the shelves. Now, if you wish to see this test take place, I will have no problem bringing you along, you will be invisible and intangible to them."

Back in the illusion, Dagen and Malencia were in a dark room. The stranger stood before them , analyzing their souls.

Did you really just get up and take that orange?

Yeah.

”... so, we had maintenance yesterday, we have it today, and we’re going to have it tomorrow.”

”Yup.”

”God damn it.”

Jessie threw her hands up in defeat. Neither of the two were looking forward to going back there again, although Alex wasn’t being nearly as vocal about it. She just sighed and shook her head.

To their surprise, the lab wasn’t nearly as terrifying as last time. Neither was The Stranger. In fact, it was almost welcoming. Alex found his speech quite fascinating in fact, and she was immediately drawn to a large bookshelf near the back wall. She gazed over each and every book, taking note of their pristine condition despite many being printed hundreds of years ago. Jessie, as per usual, found herself quite bored. However, she perked up when The Stranger told them she could watch a test take place. Normally she wouldn’t even dare speak about the test, but this one was Dagen’s…

”I’ll watch!” she blurted out, rising out of her seat faster than her hand rising into the air. She hurried over to The Stranger with unsettling enthusiasm. ”I want to watch the test.”

Maintenance; Terrible at first, but after you get it the first time, it's basically detention. As I sat my seat, I just sorta did the work I was given to do for the next couple hours, somewhat awaiting what was going to happen after detention... It was the third day. However, that's not what occupied my mind at that moment. I was more just sorta chuckling over how Steven and I got maintenance. See, I wasn't really sure why we got maintenance, but after people began to leave class, Archie pulled Steven aside. He had this somewhat angry scowl on his face, but didn't say a word; He merely pointed to us, and then the crumbling chalk board that only had the word "MAINTENANCE" left... And even that crumbled too, with a beautiful sound at that. Either way, we weren't really sure if we had maintenance, but we sure went there.

Anyways, as we were doing our work, the Stranger began to talk, explaining what was going on. To be honest, it was quite interesting if I have to say so myself, as he was explaining how he was doing the illusions. As he offered to show us the test take place, I couldn't help but sport somewhat of a smile. As I began to raise my hand, someone else spoke first... I believe her name was Jessie? She began to speak, rather loudly and quickly. Honestly, it was rather unsettling how happy she was about all of this. "I'll watch! I watched as she quickly ran up beside the stranger, almost like a puppy to their master. "I want to watch the test." When she finally finished yelling, I began to speak, a somewhat quiet tone to my voice... "I would like to watch the test."

As I finished my sentence, I looked to where Steven was sitting, to see if he was coming. To my surprise however, he had taken a book, one by that famous meister The Stranger had been talking about... Franken Stein, I think it was. He seemed quite interested in that book, I think the title was "Dissection for Dummies", and appeared to have no interest in watching the test. I simply shrugged and looked back towards The Stranger, waiting for us to begin watching the test take place.

Silene sat in the corner of her lap hugging her legs, head resting on her knees. Warren reclined beside her, his head laid back on his arms. His breathing was so soft and rhythmatic she was sure he was asleep. The rest of the classroom was surprisingly quiet, looking just like it had when their illusions had ended the night before. The arcane, nerve-wracking aura the Stranger protruded was still there, digging up the repressed memories. She shuddered, reaching over to softly run a hand over Warren's right arm. It was still there, all muscle and warm golden skin beneath her touch.

"It wasn't real, Silene. You don't need to beat yourself up over it."  Warren's voice split her thoughts and she jumped and snatched back her hand like she'd been burnt, slightly embarrassed he had been awake for all that.

"Yeah, but... Doesn't it get to you at all? I couldn't do anything to stop myself." Her voice was low and it broke on the last word. "It's the weapons job to protect the meister, even at the cost of their life, and I couldn't."

Warren sighed and pushed himself into a sitting position, looking out at the classroom a long time before he responded. "Neither could the other weapons, and they aren't upset." He swept his arm across the room. Alex was over at the book shelf thumbing through the records in interest; Jessie was jumping up and down in excitement over something; Hason stood right beside her, conversing with the Stranger, and Steven had opened a book and was busy reading it. "You just need to relax, Sille."

Oh god, he had promised he wouldn't tell anyone about that goofy nickname. "Easier said than done, Ren." That got him back. He stiffened immediately, neck craning around to deliver a playful glare. The dark crackle in his eyes was reminiscent of the look he had given Dagen... which reminded her! "You said you'd tell me what was up between you and Dagen after class, so spill it."

The meister ran a hand through his shaggy hair, exhaling in exasperation as he did so. "Fine, if you'll stop bugging me about it." His gaze swept across the classroom, making sure no one was ease dropping before he turned back to her. "He was my partner before I left home."

Yeah, had put together that much. Silene motioned for him to continue, and he did. "My family had a longstanding tradition, it went back longer than I care to remember. My brother could probably tell you, he was more of a history buff than me. Anyways, the tradition was pretty easy to follow, thankfully. A lot of that stuff could get really convoluted, but this was really basic; the heir of the Black Sun clan, me, always partnered with the heir of the White Moon cla- hey, stop laughing. I didn't name them!"

Silene clapped a hand over her mouth, forcing down her giggles. Black Sun and White Moon? Really? "S-sorry, go on."

"Yeah, basically we always partnered to seal the partnership between the two clans. Dagen was the heir to the White Moon- Silene, I swear to death I will go back to my nap if you laugh again- long story short, we ended up partnered. We had a disagreement right before I left, and it probably broke the family partnership that I ditched him. He had always been a bit of a snide prick, though. I only realized it there at the end." His story ended and he laid back down, popping another piece of gum into his mouth.

"Oh. I guess that makes sense." Silene folded her hands in her lap, wondering why she suddenly felt rather jealous. Why did she care if Warren had partnered with someone else before her? She had always assumed he had, but it hadn't ever really hit her. It didn't matter, though. Didn't matter that he was probably stronger than her. She honestly didn't care that they had known each other since they were kids, or that he was literally what Warren probably dreamed of in a weapon. "Hey, was he stronger than me?" Okay, maybe she cared a little.

"Huh? Oh." Warren shrugged, quite an amazing feat considering he was laying flat against the floor. "It really depends, I guess. I don't really think the word stronger is used right. Directly? Yeah, he made more damage, but he's mainly a one-trick pony. He can destroy things, but isn't maneuverable like you. There isn't too many options when they get up close when you're using a grenade launcher; if you fire, you're gonna hurt yourself. You can become resistant to your own attacks, sure, but no one is honestly immune. He also had a limit, since he was a Demon Gun. He uses his meisters Soul wavelength as ammunition. It can really be a drag at times."

Siene sat in slightly awed silence. Warren really did know his stuff. "Oh, um, thanks for telling me!" Silene leaned forward and pecked him on the cheek, blushing slightly. "And thanks for being a great guy, Warren."

It was a rare sight to see the Demon Scythe meister, heir to the Black Sun clan and one-time hardened criminal to blush, but the light pink tint to his cheeks left an accomplished feeling in Silene's gut. "Y-yeah, no problem." Maybe he wasn't as hard as he thought he was, after all. She hopped up, dragging him up with her.

"Lets go watch Dagen get his ass kicked!" The smile on Warren's face at that thought could have lit an entire city block.

As the other group came by to watch, the stranger put them under the same spell, but they could neither be seen nor heard by the two taking the test. The Stranger spoke to dagen and Malencia.

You, Dagen. Your soul is destructive in nature. Much like someone else. You knew each other, but he did something you can't forgive, can you? Was it a betrayal beyond your control? Or was not having control what felt like betrayal? There is something else. Something you prefer to hide.

Dagen felt the air chill. He had never felt this uneasy before around anyone. What was this guys deal. He kept his smile on his face.

There is nothing to hide then. Yeah, I used to kill people. I never ate their souls. Why risk my perfect weapon form. What are you trying at stranger?

The Stranger was stunned. Malencia looked on in confidence. Dagen revealed his past to her once before, but he wasn't that person anymore. The Stranger, knowing he couldn't shock this weapon, looked towards the meister.

You on the other hand are a tad more interesting. Never had I seen a soul that I couldn't fully understand. It's soft, and rhythmic. It soothes, as if being near you is enough to bring good feelings and emotions. You're brimming with confidence. The makings of a natural leader. However, you're nature alone is easily walked over. No one can seem to take you seriously, not even your own weapon. You also felt the sting of jealousy, your own, and from others. Hidden love? No, that's not it. You have poor self image don't you. Well, don't worry, I can make all of that disappear.

Malencia was stunned. She was confident in her abilities, but The Stranger got the other things on the nose. She just never told Dagen, who seemed to have a much more creepy smile.

He's saying you have big boobs

Dagen, not the time. Don't tell me what he said didn't get to you.

It didn't. They're just words. If he can see my soul, so what. It's the other feeling I'm getting from him... HEY WHAT THE--

And like that, The Stranger had Dagen in his grasp. The room melted around them as Dagen was forced into weapon form. All around them was darkness. Malencia began to run towards the stranger, her eyes glowing red. No one touches her weapon! The stranger thought this was a bit odd for someone, and fired a shot at her. The explosion hit the ground, launching her backwards.

Really? You're disarmed, what point is there to fighting. You're on your own.

Let my weapon go.

She rushed in again, only to have the same attack be repeated, except this time, she dodged to the right. Were her physical abilities increasing? Was this what she was hiding? The stranger let out wave after ave of attack, and she nimbly dodge each one of them. Her abilities were the same. She was full of adrenaline.

That's your secret. You feel a need to protect everyone. When the situation gets touch, your body reacts by increasing the flow of adrenaline in your system, allowing you to perform past your level. I bet it won't last long. It truly is a finicky chemical.

He was right. She began to slow down as the increased effort caught up to her. One final shot hit her in the chest. It wasn't too much of a hit, but enough to completely wind her. The stranger tossed Dagen towards her, and transformed into an avatar of death. A terrifying monster with black wings, the void for a face, and long flowing cloak that resembled the night itself. Dagen transformed out, and was attempting to revive his meister.

Come one, come on! Get up! Malancia, get up!

The stranger crept closer to the pair, preparing his final blow, when Malancia grabbed a hold of Dagen. The sudden touch caused him to react. She stood to her feet, eyes red again, and fire shot after shot, repeating what she did to Archie. The stranger was being pushed back as the rate of fire intensified. That was when the words escaped their mouths.

LOCK AND LOAD, SOUL RESONANCE

LOCK AND LOAD, SOUL RESONANCE

Dagen changed into a large backpack with two cannons held in Malencia's hands. Large metal braces hit the ground behind them, and the cannon's charged up.

HELLFIRE REIGN

HELLFIRE REIGN

A wall of explosive shells came flying out of the cannons at the speed of sound, hitting their target and everything around them. The Stranger felt the force of the hit, parts of him exploding off, others becoming mangled. It was only a few seconds, but the damage could easily equal that of an atomic bomb. When it was all through, there was nothing left. Dagen and Malencia awoke, as did anyone that was watching. They were in a normal lab, with the stranger at the front. Dagen dove towards him, anger in his face. The Stranger replied by pacifying him with a calming wave.

Calm down, it wasn't real. It was a test.

So, all of that... are you kidding me? I thought we were going to die?

Dagen was released so he could speak.

Mark my words old man, you touch me ever again, I will blow a hole in your throat big enough to shove my fist in and tear your heart through it. Then... His expression changed to a deranged smile once more. I will eat your soul.

Malencia placed a hand on his shoulder, which seemed to calm him. He responded by placing his hand over her's. They remained quiet in their seats, thinking about what had happened.

There was a queasy feeling in Jessie’s stomach when the test began. She knew what was going to happen, and the sudden realization made a wave of nausea wash over her. Then she remembered who was on the receiving end and felt a lot better about it. And it was during their test that she actually thought about what kind of person Dagen was. Rude, sarcastic, sociopathic, quick to anger, and vastly egotistical. He had all the charm in the world but probably couldn’t keep a girlfriend who gave two shits about her own feelings.

Why was it always the cute ones?

And his Soul Resonance was pretty cool too.

”Excuse me?” she blurted out, brushing past the stranger to meet Dagen face-to-face. ”This man has the power to lock you inside your greatest fears, and don’t give me that ‘I’m not afraid of anything’ bullshit, because I thought that too for a while, and guess what? I was fucking terrified! Not only that, but he can . . .” she shuddered as she spoke her next words, ”force you into a weapon and make your soul wavelength match his. Have you ever been raped? Because that’s what it fucking feels like!”

Alex stood up. ”Jessie-”

She looked and pointed at her sister. ”Stay out of this Alex.” Her sinister gaze returned to Dagen. ”This is between weapons. Where was I, oh yes, you were threatening the life of a man who is clearly stronger than you’ll ever dream to be!”

"Jessie!" Alex pulled her sister back. "Enough."

Jessie shook free, but stood her ground. I want to smack him.

He's not worth it.

As he put us under the same spell, I just began to... Examine, the situation. So far, it looked much different than ours; More like a void, similar to that when... Actually, let's not compare it to that. I don't want to remember that. Anyways, right off the bat he was doing the same thing he did to us. I believe a phrase that would fit it was 'Second verse, same as the first'. Or something like that. One thing that was somewhat interesting, however, was just how much he had to say about the girl... He just droned on and on about her soul, while merely glancing over Mr. Abs' soul. Similarly enough, the the girl was effected much more than he was, that was... Well, until he continued on with what he had done before. He grabbed Dagen, forcibly turning him into weapon form. This caused memories of when he did the same to Jessie, and even stole Silene from Warren during that...

However, she reacted much differently than we did. When The Stranger shot her, her eyes merely... Turned red. She reacted to being shot, by fighting back, with much less despair or even going defensive. She dodged wave after wave of attack too, like that of a ballerina, her agility unmatched by anyone I had seen... Except maybe Warren, actually. He did run up the arm of that thing after all. And then, The Stranger began to explain it like he always did, explaining that it was merely adrenaline, and that she would slow down soon, and sure enough, she did. When she had slowed down, a final shot actually hit her, knocking her down, or at least winding her... Did she just take a shot head on, and stay in one piece? Perhaps it was just the illusion, or perhaps it was because she was a meister, but it still struck me as odd... Then again, I did take an anchor to the side, and I'm here right now, aren't I?

When The Stranger stopped firing, he tossed... I think his actual name was Dagen, wasn't it...? Either way, he got tossed towards her, and transformed back into a human. He seemed to be trying to revive his partner, however, something else grabbed my attention; The Stranger had turned into a... I'm not even sure what to call it, other than a 'monster'. As he... No, it, neared them, the girl took hold of Dagen, and began to fire at The Stranger. The way it fired was quite reminiscent of how they fought Archie, however, one thing was different; Somewhere during it, they began to yell, something about lock and load soul resonance, and then something about 'hellfire rain', or... Did they mean Reign? Ah, I bet they meant Reign. As they did so, what seemed to be a large backpack appeared, replacing Dagen. The backpack had several bracing mechanisms along her back, and even some that shot into the ground as she began to fire. Honestly, there's only one thing I can say about the outcome of their attack, only one way to describe it... Beautiful... And then, sad as it was, it ended, the glorious destruction ended, as we were  returned to the lab.

As we were put back into our true place, I guess a grin was on my face, as Steven actually put down his book from the seat beside me, and posed a question. "So, I'm guessing it was good? I attempted to lose the grin, I attempted to go back to normal, and try to stop myself from feeling happiness from the chaos and destruction that had just taken place within the illusion, but... I just couldn't. Something about it, pleased me, and made me all warm inside. Even my reply to him had a bit of a tone of happiness. "It was... Amazing, to say the least."

But that wasn't where it ended, as I finished my short reply to Steven, something caught both of our attentions. See, while I was talking, Dagen had said... Something, I'm not sure what he said, but it seemed to set Jessie off. She began to rant, about how his reaction after the test was pretty much bullshit, and a complete farce. Furthermore, she began to go on about how he had just threatened a man who could not only lock him in his fears, but was about twenty times stronger than he was. Somewhere through it, her sister... Alex, I think, attempted to stop her, but even then, she was stopped. Honestly, I just sorta reclined in my seat and stayed silent after she was pulled away. After all, it was going to be interesting to see what happened because of her outburst, was it not?

Warren had to admit, begrudgingly, they were strong. Malencia's form was sloppy and she wasted most of her chances to strike back, but that was mostly due to lack of training; they couldn't all have psychopathic fathers, he supposed. She was still probably the second strongest combatant in hand-to-hand, though, directly behind him. Their resonance caught his interest in a strange, dark way. Each explosion that echoed out across the chamber excited him, heart jumping into his throat, brain clouding in his eagerness...

"Warren," a strange voice drilled into his head, pushing away the fog. Oh, but he liked the fog... No. He shook his head in an attempt to clear his mind, turning to face Silene. They were back in the lab now, when had that happened? This was getting out of hand. "Yeah, Silene?"

"You alright? You were looking a bit out of there for a second." She didn't directly say it, but he knew what she meant: "You aren't bat shit fucking insane right now, are you?"

"Yeah, I'll be alright." Don't worry, I'm not insane and about to kill you yet. Maybe next Tuesday though, just stick around. No, no he couldn't think like that. Couldn't think about hurting her, if he thought about it it became a possibility. It wasn't allowed to become a possibility, otherwise he would have to leave. Gah, why couldn't she just ditch him, it would make everything so much simpler!

"Good, I was worried!" She smiled, adorable dimples the size of craters sinking into her cheeks and he wanted to do nothing more than hug her and make sure nothing hurt her, except that would just be putting the dangerous closer and that wouldn't help and there was nothing he could do and- no, no. Calm down, breath. Okay, he was good.

"Don't be, I'll be fine." Sometimes he amazed himself at how calm his voice sounded. Could they really not see that no, he wouldn't be fine? He dreamed of blowing them into bloody smithereens at night, why were any of them around him? He should put himself in a mental institution, but no, that wouldn't work. He would probably just break through the walls, damn regular humans and their weak walls.

Silene turned her head, ears perked up, an adorably confused expression her face. Oh, was some one yelling? Damn them, he was trying to have a conversati- oh, it was Dagen. Of course, because the bastard couldn't just not follow him for once in his god damn life! Why didn't the moron stop yelling? Would he like it if all anyone else did was regurgitate shi- oh and now someone else was yelling too great! Yelling! Maybe he should just make an explosion and they could all shut up! They'd all be dead then, hahaha, then they couldn't ye- god damn it, he was doing it again. Stop it.

He turned towards Silene and focused on her. Immediately the stupid, psychotic, amazing wonderful thou- No! No stop it! Agh! "Let them yell, she'll get it out of her system. Everyone has to yell at that bastard at some point."

Silene nodded, her long beautiful hair that smelled like like roses and would look good blown - NO! NO IT WOULDN'T! "Yeah."

They sat in the corner in silence after that, watching the two and thinking about blowing up the chairs and desk and the stran- "So, that last mission we had..."

Dagen, already excited from the event, looked at Jessie (who seemed to be bending over thanks to her little tantrum) just smiled and flexed his muscles in a very subtle way.

My question is, why don't you strive to be stronger than him? At least I have the balls to stand up to him. Power is the only thing that matters in this world, and those that want it will become strong. I'm one of those people, I don't care what it takes. I'll be past everyone's level and then no one can call me weak ever again.

Dagen gave her a flirtful wink and walked away, Malencia approached Jessie and spoke softly to her.

He may seem like an ass at times, but deep down, he's actually quite nice. He's just afraid to show it. Says kindness is an excuse for weakness. I'm sorry if he offended you in any way. Take care.

She took a bow and followed after Dagen, saying something vague about their mission in Paris. The stranger was busy looking at a book while the commotion was going on. He only looked up a second to say one last thing.

If any of you have business for me, by all means, I have all night. If not, I think some of you need to get to your missions. Wouldn't want to keep those Kishin Eggs waiting now would we?

His eyes snapped back to his book, A Romance of Knives by Franken Stein. The cover seemed to have knife blades dripping in blood, and a smiling, nearly exposed woman under them. Sure signs this was one of those weird erotic novels.

Hason

As everyone else began to get up, I felt Steven tap me on the shoulder, and motion towards the door, speaking with a somewhat dull tone to his voice. "I'm gonna go pick us out a mission, since we sorta forgot to do so before this started, so we've most likely got the worst mission left. Come find me whenever, and we'll go."  And with that, he was off; Running as he normally did, no doubt to pick a mission and then to go interact with his cats. As everyone, one by one began to leave the room, I slowly got up, and approached The Stranger. I began to speak, a somewhat cautious, and perhaps nervous tone to my voice. "You uh... You said to be here in three days, so I'm here, and ready for the tests, Sir."

The Stranger

As the young witch approached him, The Stranger let out a smile bellow his cloak; He had been looking forward to this from the other day, finally a chance to examine a witches soul without them trying to truly kill him. Without a word, The Stranger hit a button on his desk, several training dummies dropping from the ceiling, and coincidentally setting on fire. He spoke; His voice quick, and slightly demented.  "We're going to test your endurance and power. You have to put out all seven dummies within ten seconds or else they'll burn up... Of their original ignition point, leaving about seven seconds as I finish this sentence."

Hason

As the training dummies fell from the ceiling, and were set aflame, I nearly zoned out of his explanation. I knew what I was supposed to do already, but... Could I? Something told me not too, and there was a tingle of delight I got from watching them burn, similar to one watching a movie they enjoyed. As the seconds ticked down, I seemed to come back from almost allowing them to burn, firing out several mid sized maws to douse the flames at once, with greater precision than ever.

The wind was seemingly knocked out of me at the sudden expenditure of energy, and I was reminded why I was taught to gradually fuel them, rather than to rip the energy out all at once. Nonetheless, I completed my task, and returned to my 'instructor', hoping that maybe he had assumed it was just the charge time for each maw, rather than me almost allowing it to be. I began to speak, a somewhat curious but cautious tone to my voice. "Did uh... Did I pass?"

The Stranger

Hmm... She put them all out with a maw for each one, signifying the well of magic she pulled from's strength, but there was something that caused him to be somewhat concerned. She cast the spell at near the last second, and she only 'succeeded' in the test due to a miscalculation on his part, as they stayed aflame for eleven seconds. He wanted to write it off as her taking time to conjure the spells, but he could sense her soul had wavered for a second during that time. He would however keep this knowledge to himself, as to not discourage her, and only write it down himself. This time when he spoke, his voice was a bit more calming, his abyssal eyes examining the barely standing dolls as he spoke.  "Very good. It took you longer to conjure that spells than I had anticipated, but it still got the job done."

As he finished his sentence, his voice he clicked another button, several more dolls falling from the ceiling, again catching on the fire. He spoke again, his voice returning to it's demented demeanor, speaking a bit faster than before. "But can you succeed with triple the amount?"

Hason

As the second test began, I felt somewhat betrayed, but I also felt that warm feeling again. It was somewhat intoxicating, to be honest. The more I felt it, the more I wanted it to go on, the more I felt my judgement grow blurry... I had to stop it as soon as possible. I began to charge a maw, but realized rather soon that it wouldn't work alone, no; I didn't have enough time. I kicked my bag into the air, and caught it, taking out a water bottle and unscrewing it, pouring it's contents into the maw I had been charging, mixing the water into my own, and while it did leave more water behind than I had anticipated, it did succeed with less than a second to spare. I didn't turn to the stranger yet, I instead watched my work, or what I had done, all 21 training dummies still in some more of 'not completely burned'.

The Stranger

As the test came to an end once again, The Stranger was a bit surprised, as she succeeded in her task. He noted her soul wavered much more this time, almost dipping into allowing them to burn, but she put them out much faster this time; It was as if the more she wavered, the faster she was to react to something, which was... Intruiging, to say the least. This reaction time increase was hinting towards her being more likely to act without thinking the more she gave in, which would be good to know for further tests. The stranger concluded he would have to wait to put this to its limit for later, though, as she still had a Kishin hunting mission to get to.

There was another thing he noticed, but he would have to wait to put that to it's true test until much later. When he once again spoke, his voice was back to his somewhat calming tone, and he had moved away from his desk. "Ah, you were much faster this time. Your precision was off, but that was to be expected in this situation. I didn't even expect you to succeed in this task, so I must commend you in your use of mixing the pre-existing water with your own. Now then, hurry onto your mission with Steven, as I have to clean up all of this water."

Hason

As he finished his sentence, I nodded, taking my now water soaked bag, and leaving the room, heading into the city to look for Steven... And to pick up some more water.

The crescent moon hovered in the sky, grinning its toothy grin as a small, banged up car pulled to a stop in front of the opera house. The building was deceptively old and grand, polished marble and stained glass windows illuminated by the yellow moonlight, a stark contrast the dark forest that surrounded it. Silene pulled her keys from the ignition and slipped them into her purse with a shaky sigh, turning to her partner in the passenger seat. His feet were kicked up onto the dashboard, seat reclined as he snored softly. “Warren, get up, we’re here!”

Warren grunted in acknowledgement, pulling himself into an upright position in a sloth-like manner, grumbling. “I can’t believe you made me wear this shit.” Silene giggled. His normal sloppy attire had been exchanged with a single-breasted black jacket with glossy black buttons, a smooth white undershirt, black slacks and his regular steel-toed boots. She had tried for a tie and dress shoes, but they remained in a smouldering piled of leather and cloth at home (she didn’t press her luck). Even so, he cleaned up startlingly well.

She herself had chosen a form-fitting purple dress and heels. Her hair had been styled, falling to her waist in a wave-like fashion, and she wore a minimal amount of make-up; most notably the petal pink lipstick. A matching purse was slung over her shoulder. “Well, coming to a ballroom dressed in our normal gear would just freak people out. It’d probably scare the killer away, and we don’t have enough money to stay overnight!”

Warren sighed, stepping out of the car and burying his hands in his pockets, head downcast. “This stuff is so damn itchy, though. I don’t get how anyone wears it!”

“Oh, man up. I can’t believe you’ve never worn a suit before, didn’t your clan have any formal meetings or anything?”

“Yeah, but that was more of a ‘if you don’t do this we’ll kill you in cold-blooded fashion’ type of meeting. Wore whatever we were most comfortable fighting in, because brawls were pretty regular.” At the rather appalled look on his weapon’s face, he added, “Don’t worry, only two or three gave any bad injuries, and I can only remember one that someone died. It was probably the least dangerous thing we did, honestly.”

Silene shook her head, careful not to mess her hair up. His stories always made her stomach turn. What must it have been like growing up like that, always watching your back against everyone, even your parents? They were supposed to love and protect you from all the bad things, not actively expose you to them. She thought of her own parents, who she hadn’t talked with in months. In comparison, they didn’t really seem so bad… “Well, we’re here."

Warren nodded, staring up at the big wooden door. It was polished, like everything else, until its surface was as reflective as a mirror. From the other side of it he could hear a loud, slow song playing. “Nothing left to do, it’s time to hunt us a phantom.” He pulled a hand from his pocket, shoving open the door. Inside was an array of colors and tables, important looking men and women swaying back in forth in their expensive clothes.

Suddenly, Silene felt underdressed. They all looked so rich, whirling around the floor. God, she couldn’t dance like that. She had taken classes when she was younger, but...

“Don’t worry, you’ll be fine,” Warren assured her, grabbing her by the wrist and pulling her inside. They came to a stop at one of the big tables covered by the embroidered cloths. Tall, long-necked wine glasses and old bottles of wine lined the table. “Want a glass?”

The scythe shook her head, shooting him a soft warning glare. “Don’t think we’ll be able to spot a kishin egg drunk off our asses, Warren.”

He shrugged and poured himself a glass, leaning against the table as he sipped it. Something about the way he held it told her it wasn’t his first time drinking, which was curious considering he still wasn’t even of legal age. “The phantom always strike at midnight, we have an hour.”

Silene looked at her DeathPhone, hidden in her purse. He was right, the clock read 11:00 even. One hour to blow. They stood there for a while, her swaying to the beat and him drinking his wine. When he reached for the bottle to pour himself another glass, she decided to step in. “May I have this dance?”

Warren gave her a look that clearly said ‘you’re-fucking-dreaming’. “You do realize it’s men that generally ask women, right?”

“I don’t follow social standards. Besides,” she motioned over shoulder. “People are looking at us weird.”

The meister shrugged. “Let them, they can’t kick us out legally, DWMA students have the right to go wherever we’re assigned.”

Damn him, since when did he know the rules? It was time for the trump card.“I’ll give you your gum back.” She had confiscated it on the way because he wouldn’t stop chewing it and the smell, cramped up in the tiny car, had burned her nose.

A moment of hesitation followed before he finally replied, his voice strained, “deal.”

With a gracious smile, Silene inclined her head and placed her hand in his, steering them into the throng of couples swirling around the polished floor. Quickly, observing what the other couples had done, he pulled her close to him and she was forced to swallow her gasp as his arms fit snugly around her waist. Luckily, the dance was slow, because a sudden wave of dizziness hit her as the scent of wintergreen and musky cologne washed over her - it was oddly intoxicating. “I-I thought you said you couldn’t dance,” she mumbled, flustered at the pace.

“I can’t, at least not very well.” Warren tilted his head down to look at her, eyes half-lidded. Had his eyes always been that dark? He had obviously seen more than many men his relatively young age, she knew that, but it gave him an easily respectable air when he wanted one. “I’m just copying the people around us.”

Silene couldn’t help but let out a giggle that had suddenly become quite flirtatious. She immediately blushed afterwards and his smile threatened to turn into a grin, amusement lighting his eyes. “You’re doing a good job of it, then. I took lessons when I was younger and I can barely keep up!”

He chuckled, the sound deep in his throat. “Don’t expect me to make a habit of it.” His forehead came to rest against her's, body softly swaying with the beat. “I’d only do something like this for you, Sille. For anyone else it would just be too much effort.” His lips were just inches from hers, warm breath tickling her cheek.

“You’re such a lazy bum…” Her voice was low and breathy. It would be so easy to lean just a little bit forward and press her lips to his, to finally show him that he was more than just her friend and partner; she loved him, damn it. The song was drawing to a close, it was now or never. She stood on her tip toes, gazing directly into his eyes, and brought her li-

“Shit!”

Silene jumped back in surprise, eyes wide, scanning the room in panic. Had she gone too far? Damn it, she had scared him. He wasn’t ready for a relationship, now he was going to call off their partnership an- oh, no. The kishin egg had just appeared, that explained it.

“Well, phantom, looks like you aren’t so ghostly after all.” Warren stood several feet in front of her, hand wrapped around the wrist of someone, blocking the descent of the knife they held. “Lets try one more test, though; how do you react to an explosion?”

Silene could see the telltale sign of his attack from where she was standing; the rounding of his shoulder as he drew back his arm, wavelength gathering in the palm of his hand, knees slightly bent to deliver the strike full force - there was a grunt of pain as his blow found its mark, the explosion from his palm lifting the assailant off his feet and throwing him back.

The ballroom dissolved into chaos at the sudden fighting, people running and screaming, trying to figure out what was going on. Silene made her way to her meister, grabbing his his shoulder. “Where’d he go?”

Warren pointed at the shadows of the room, eyes narrowed. A man stumbled out, dressed in an extravagant suit with a black cape and white gloves. A porcelain mask obstructed his face, thin eye-slits glowing red, and his right hand gripped a knife. There was a smoking chunk missing from the midriff of his jacket, courtesy of the explosive attack. “I saw him right before we were about to, uh, finish our dance. Barely managed to catch the knife in time.”

Kiss you mean, Silene thought, decidedly angry. She had finally gotten the courage to do it, to kiss him, and this wannabe ghost had ruined it. He was going to pay- she couldn’t wait to eat his soul. “Ready, Warren?”

Warren nodded, catching her as she transformed into the scythe. Like always, he spun her around quickly in a predictable pattern, warming up. It kicked up a whirlwind, blowing his hair around. “Hey, phantom,” his grin was broad, but it wasn’t deranged. He had complete control of himself. “wanna take a shot at sticking someone who’s actually looking at you with that knife?”

The man snorted underneath his mask, rushing forward and swinging the dagger wildly. Warren caught it with the crook of the scythe, twisting the weapon out of the ghoul’s hand. It skidded across the marble floor of the now empty ballroom, scraping the otherwise flawless ground. “I’m gonna make you explode now!”

The familiar explosive wavelength flowed through Silene, gathering at the point of her blade, and she put her all into amplifying it. She was angry at the phantom, angrier than she had ever been, and it was time for payback.

Once the attack was ready, Warren struck out, hitting the ghoul in the chest. It exploded much stronger than his first attack had, launching the phantom haphazardly into the air. “Hold on Silene!”

“Got it!”

Warren, for the second time, used his scythe as a pole vault to launch himself higher by causing an explosion at the base of the weapon. He was like a speeding rocket as he hurtled through the air, foot smashing directly into the falling kishin egg’s chest. It grunted and hit the ceiling, shattering the pretty gold decor. Its soul drifted slowly to the ground, small and wispy red. “Can’t believe we had to come all the way out here for this, he didn’t even put up a fight.”

Silene transformed back into her human form, nodding. “I did expect him to do something with how much hype the people around here had been giving him.” She crouched down beside the soul, picking it up and tossing it between hands. It felt significantly less powerful than the last one she had eaten, Kreddy Frueger, but she couldn’t complain. A soul was a soul. With a soft sigh, she swallowed it, coughing at how bitter and twisted it was. “His soul wasn’t even good.”

The scythe meister chuckled, pulling Silene back to her feet. “I think you owe me my gum, now. I really want a piece.” She tossed it to him and the silence that followed was almost comfortable, the only sounds the slow music in the background and the smacking of gum. Everyone else had fled in their panic.

“Warren?”

"Huh?"

“Lets get going, I don’t wanna be here when they find that hole in their ceiling.” They left the opera house behind, their mission complete. It was a success in her book. She got to see Warren in a suit, got him to dance, almost got a kiss! Oh, and they got another soul, so that was something.

Our target was dubbed 'The Batter', his location an abandoned baseball stadium on the edge of town. The field was clear and open, the atmosphere silent save for the low humming of the training equipment and the flickering of the spotlights. It was quite apparent that our target had been here moments before, so a single question plagued out mind; where was he?

My question was soon answered, low voice ringing out across the field. "Specter, I have come to purify you." As the words were finished I heard the mechanism from the training equipment fire, and then distinct noise of a bat colliding with a baseball echoed throughout the field. Out of instinct, I began to twirl Steven, a shield materializing in front of me. The ball collided with the shield, thin spiderweb-like cracks spiraling from the collision point, signifying the force of the blow. As the ball fell to the ground, the lights flickered out and fear sparked down my spine, leaving a knot of terror in my stomach. Something was wrong.

The spotlights flickered back on, revealing our target standing face to face with us, bat held to the side poised to strike. His skin was almost completely white, and his eyes were obscured by the cap he wore. His outfit consisted of a baseball player's uniform: a white striped shirt, white trousers and cleats. I saw a smirk grow on his face and he swung the bat with force unmatched, shattering the shield and whipping up a cloud of dust in the process. The bat didn't stop with the shield, it went straight through and collided with my side, sending me flying across the field and into a wall. The force was so great the stone shatter under my weight, cracking much like my shield had.

My vision flashed in and out as I got up, retrieving Steven in the process. The lights flickered on and off too, and I could see him running, growing closer with each flicker of the lights. As I got ready to make my move, a copper taste filled my mouth, and I spit out a mouthful of blood. A lingering pain stayed at my side, and I gripped at it, holding it with my left hand and Steven with my right. Anger washed over me, and the grip I had on both my side, and Steven tightened, my vision blurry. My soul protection dropped in an instant, and the large amounts of electricity began to overwhelm me, but I had one ace up my sleeve; when the lights flickered off, so did the power, and he was the only electricity I truly sensed during this time, granting me a slight advantage during this.

At the next outage, I reared back my arm, swinging Steven with full force and launching two maws beside him, hoping to clip something. The lights flickered back on in time for me to see him bat Steven away, however the maws seemed to catch him off guard, one of them taking off a bite out of his shoulder. This still didn't stop his assault as the lights flickered off,  and I dropped down, feeling the wind rush over my head as the bat passed over me, missing ever so slightly.

The lights returned just in time for me to stare into his eyes, and finally get a glimpse of who I was fighting; or rather, what. In place of normal eyes he had four slits, two on either side of his head, with red, almost glowing pupils. I should have felt fear or despair at this sight, but I felt quite the opposite. Anger roared through my blood, imbuing my attacks with raw strength. I whipped Steven up into the air, and swung him around, seemingly missing The Batter as the lights flickered off once again. I heard a laugh and could sense he had raised his bat. Fear finally began to overpower anger, and I let go of Steven's hilt, and just sort of resigned myself to my fate... And then, nothing.

The lights flickered on, and I could see him standing there, the chakram having embedded itself in his back, as if it swung back towards us before I had dropped it. The Batter first dropped his bat, and then collapsed to the ground, turning into a soul mid-fall. As the lights flickered on and off, the adrenaline and anger began to fade, and pain washed over my side once again. I began to clutch my wound, wincing and stumbling as I powered through the pain, walking towards the exit of the stadium.

As Steven caught up with me, I smirked; he looked rather pale after that whole ordeal. "Hey, Steven, you're uh... You're lookin' a little pale."

To this, he just sort of shrugged as he got ready to send us back, answering with a disgusted tone. "Eh, must have come with the sense of self righteousness I got from the soul."

As we exited the area, I could have sworn I heard a final deep laugh from the stadium, and the lights flicker off one final time... But that was just my imagination, right?

Alex felt Jessie tense up at Dagen’s last remark. Jessica...

She shot a glare at Alex.

Please.

A quiet moment passed. Alex let go of her sister, who let out a defeated sigh. ”Let’s go.”

The two left the lab in silence.

”Alex?”

“What now?”

”You didn’t answer my question from last time. How did we get a horse?”

Alex let out a tired sigh. ”Same reason why we’re fighting a kishin in the middle of the night? I don’t know.”

Jessie let out a dissatisfied grunt. ”Are we going the right way?”

Alex didn’t answer. You’re the one with the map...

”I know I have the map! I was just . . . thinking aloud.” Jessie laid the unfolded map on Alex’s back - forcing her to lean over a bit - as she traced their path on it with her finger. ”Hmm, let’s see, we just passed this, turn left there,” she muttered under her breath. ”Ah-ha! We should be-”

”-almost there,” said Alex. ”Covered bridge, up ahead.”

The forest’s green-gray mist seemed to part before them, revealing a weathered and rickety bridge spanning a creek down the road.

”Hey Alex - stop that! This is serious! Remember what that old guy said back there?”

”Umm, he said…”

”’Don’t cross the covered bridge or the rider will have your soul.’ Or something like that. Point is, he was probably talking about that one up ahead.”

Alex shrugged. ”So? What are you expecting, the Headless Horseman to come out and try to kill us?”

”. . . yeah!”

”Don’t be ridiculous Jessie,”

”Excuse me? We’re in a forest outside the actual Sleepy Hollow in the middle of the night hunting a kishin egg, and in case you’ve forgotten what those are too, they devour souls. And considering how we’ve fought Mecha Mole-solini and a Kenkhis Ghan cosplayer who thought he was the actual guy’s ancestor, not to mention how Warren and Silene fought someone who thought he was Kreddy Frueger, and that Hason’s kishin egg was a walking diving suit with a giant anchor, the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow doesn’t sound that far off to me!”

Alex took a few seconds to think about what her sister just said. It really did sound quite believable, actually. Still, he couldn’t actually be headless. ”Right. So are you saying we shouldn’t fight him?”

”No, I’m saying we should be aware that we’re fighting The Headless Horseman.”

”Okay . . . here’s the plan. See the roof over the bridge? I’m going to toss you up there, as a weapon of course, and then ride across. When I see the horseman, I’ll ride back towards the bridge and jump up from the horse, then you’ll pull me up onto the roof. Then we’ll kill him from up there.”

”Alex-”

”Now what?” Alex turned around to look at her sister sitting behind her, then followed her pointing finger to the bridge. Standing across it was a cloaked man on a black horse, menacingly staring at them. Which was made even more terrifying by how he had no head to stare with.

”Alex! Alex, run! Get us out of here!”

She didn’t need anything else.

Their little brown horse was a surprising match for the much larger steed, but it was slowly gaining on them. Alex was doing her best to shoot behind her, but her arrows were going wide. Each miss made the horseman laugh louder and harder, seeping fear further and further into Alex’s skull.

Shooting backwards isn’t working Alex.

Really? What gave it away?!?

Head into the trees and get beside him, you’ll get a better shot from there.

Alex slung the bowstring over her torso and steered towards the thick mist lining the road, but as she did an orange explosion forced her away. ”The fuck was that?” She looked behind her: the horseman - no, the pumpkin in his hand cackled. He threw it at Alex, and she had to leap off the horse which took off into the thicket to avoid the pumpkin. Alex rolled to her feet and drew her bow, but the horseman was on her already. He swung a massive scythe at her, knocking her back and into a tree which came crashing down.

Alex lost her grip on Jessie, and she flew even further back, ricocheting off a couple trees and getting stuck in a bush. She transformed back to a human and untangled herself. Alex was laying on the ground a good fifty metres away, and the horseman was at least twice as far as that. This part of the forest was too thick for him to bring his horse, so he dismounted and slowly made his way towards the girls. Jessie tore through brush and leaped over fallen trees, doing everything in her power to reach her sister before The Headless Horseman did.

”Alex!” she yelled, only a few metres away. ”Alex, get up!” She was breathing, but not moving. There was no time to assess her wounds, so Jessie picked up her unconscious sister, slung her over a shoulder, and ran back the way she came. She could hear the horseman start slicing through the bush now, tearing a path towards them, coming closer and closer. ”Come on Alex, wake up…”

...put...me...down...

”Alex! Are you okay?”

I said... “Put. Me. Down.”

Jessie didn’t need to be told again.

She practically leaped into Alex’s arms, who shot arrow after arrow into the lumbering horseman. Each shot slowed him down, but his laughter pursued. Finally, he reached up, cackling pumpkin in hand, ready to bring it down at his feet and take them both with him. But before it was smashed, Alex put an arrow through it, sending it flying backwards and lodging it in a tree.

The pumpkin didn’t find that very funny.

”Jessie.”

Yeah?

Alex dropped her sister, who transformed back to a human. ”I’m going to faint.”

Jessie caught her before she collapsed, chuckling to herself. ”Let’s get you home, I’ll pick up a pumpkin spice latte for you on the way." She picked up the soul the horseman's dead body dropped as she passed by it. It smelled like raw pumpkin and rotting flesh. "... gross."

Dagen and Malencia walked through a small side street in Paris. Their target was that of a master alchemist, who was said to be seen turning people and their souls into gold.

So, Mortecai just let you have this three star mission?

If by let, you mean I nabbed the briefing off of his desk when I seen it, then yes. This guy has to be worth ten, maybe fifteen kishin egg souls alone. I read the entire thing.

Malencia stopped, and brought her hand to her forehead, seemingly rubbing away a headache. So, you're telling me that you stole a mission for something that can be potentially out of our league? And you actually read the entire briefing?

Ok, I skimmed over. All I know is, he is supposed to be ugly. At least that's how I imagined him. A guy that turns people to gold must have a good case of the not getting laid anytime soon.

Good, you can join him. We're going through drills for the next month because of this. Do you realize how much trouble we could get...

Her thought was interrupted as a gold statue of a person fell from the sky. The two looked up to peer into the face of a man wearing a solid gold mask. He was heavily armored all around his body, save for areas where he needed movement. In his right hand was a large glowing red orb, and in his left was a scepter of some kind. The being was breathing heavily, his large stature barely standing on the building. He gazed upon the weapon and meister, and only uttered a whisper that sounded like "More power..."

Found him!

Dagen transformed into his weapon form, and malencia took aim, but the being was gone. She stood on her guard, only to have the very earth under her move, tossing her towards a luxury shop. As she crashed through the window, the being followed in, destroying the wall in the process. He slammed his scepter on the ground, erecting a cement cage that trapped the two.

Dagen, you're an idiot, you know that?

You gonna punish me for being a bad boy?

Malencai rolled her eyes, and blasted the cage open, jumping out of it as the creature tried to fire some kind of beam from the orb. She took aim and used barrage shot, which barely seemed to affect him. The alchemist responded by firing another beam of energy at her, hitting her in the side, which turned part of her clothing into gold.

MY UNIFORM! You're going to pay. Dagen, how much do you think this place costs?

Who cares, no one will know we destroyed it and the surrounding area. Unless you focus my fire right, we may only destroy everything behind this walking iron penis.

I'll take those odds

Malencia's eyes turned red, and Dagen began to glow. The two went into their resonance, causing the being to become curious. He stood an watched the spectacle, his scientific mind taking over. He wanted to see if he could add them to his collection in this very state. Too late, a barrage of explosive rounds began to destroy his armor, and eventually hit his fleshy parts. Wave after wave of explosions reduced him to a mere husk, and his soul silently fell to the ground, golden in color. Dagen transformed out, and looked at it closely.

Yep, this soul should give us a needed power boost.

His attention diverted to the merchandise in the shop. It just so happened to be a lingerie shop. He examined everything he could. He imagined what Jessie would look like in some of these items, and got lost in his daydream. Malencia shook him out of it.

Dagen, someone is here!

What?

A shadowy figure, holding a katana, was standing next to the soul. From the katana, an arm reached out, and the soul was devoured. In an instant, the two disappeared, as if they never existed at all. Someone had stolen the soul they almost died trying to get. Dagen looked dumbfounded, while Malencia released her frustration by punching a mannequin across the room.

So, that happened. Want to try on some of these things? Could be something in your size.

Must your mind always return to sex. We have a bigger issue at hand. let's just head home. I need to sleep this off

The two walked back to the transport terminal, and prepared for the trip back to the island. Both disappointed in their own way.

GM Edit

Six months have passed, and our heroes have gained more souls, and new abilities. Reports have risen about mysterious people stealing souls. Carter has taken to this by offering a reward for the capture of these thieves. Now, we see what is in store for the students in Mortecai's class.

Silene woke up rather suddenly, sitting upright, unable to move or see. The air was cold and musty. Her entire body ached. She licked her lips: dry, cracked, and irony. Bloody. The last thing she remembered was going to bed angry at Warren, but he wouldn’t do this to her. Whatever this was. Footsteps behind her sent chills down her spine. They circled around her, heels clicking on a metallic floor. They stopped in front of her. She felt a leather  brush her cheek, moving down to her chin and lightly holding it, bringing it up.

”Look at what he did to you,” said a smooth, seductive male voice. ”Let’s clean some of this up.” He let go and walked away, still talking. ”There’s not much I can do about the cuts or bruise, but the blood can be cleaned.” He walked back. Silene felt a warm, wet cloth on her mouth. She was too scared to move. ”I feel like a mother, cleaning up her infant child after a meal. There, good as new.” He took the cloth and walked back to where he got it from. He walked around a bit more, shuffling papers around, moving large objects. Then he stopped.

”Smile, honey.”

Click.

”You’re on camera.”

Ergh... What the hell happened? Warren groggily sat up, rubbing his temples; he had the worst migraine. What time is it? He fumbled for his phone on the nightstand beside him, wincing at the sudden burst of light as it switched on.  "Damn it, late again..." Groaning, the meister lifted himself off the couch and stumbled to the bathroom and slipped into the shower.

When he was clean and free of the lingering scent of vomit and alcohol, Warren shoved his jacket on and headed to class. The outside air bit into him, frozen Northern wind chilling his damp skin to the bone - drying his hair would have been beneficial, but he was distracted. 'She was just trying to help and I hurt her, like always.' The meister came to a stop outside of Mortecai's classroom, staring at the door. 'I've got to fix this.'

Warren shouldered the door open, glancing over at their normal seats. The entire row was empty, which was mostly normal; no students generally sat around him because of his tendencies, so the row was reserved for them, but Silene wasn't there. His heart jumped into his throat and he scanned the rest of the room for her. No, she wasn't sitting with any of her friends. She was gone.

Numbly walking to his seat, Warren was confused. He had been trying to get her to leave him since they met, so why did the thought that she actually had terrify him so much? He slouched down, head hitting the desk. 'You did it. You chased off the only person who gave a damn about you, good job Warren.'

Mortecai's class; Something I assumed would get better, but honestly, never did. I had noticed that Warren and Silene hadn't gotten here yet, but I had assumed something just kept them up. About halfway... No, a quarter into the lesson, Warren walked into the class room, and he had a strange look to him. He looked almost depressed, or mopey. I mean, sure, he always looked depressed, but even this is off for him, it was like depression times two. Furthermore, Silene wasn't following him, and the whole situation was just all around a bit strange.

It was strange enough, that even Steven nudged me, mentioning that Warren looked off, and that Silene was missing, two observations that I had already made. At this point, my attention was focused on Warren; Not because of him being mopey or anything, but for the reason that everyone else was; He had the audacity to show up to Mortecai's class late. And I, for one, was curious as to the consequences.

Dagen was sitting at a desk, folding his arms over his nether region, seeming in a lot of pain. It had been a few months since Malencia started the "Super Secret Training Regiment," and it impeded on his social life quite a bit. He ignored the fact that Warren walked right in the class like a jackass, and that Mortecai, who was in the middle of the history of him, stopped to glare at the meister, raising the tension in the room to ungodly levels. No, he was pretty mad at Malencia, who decided to look at him and see what's wrong now that the coast was clear.

What's wrong?

My balls hurt cause I hadn't gotten any action in three months because you will not leave me the fuck alone about this training shit. And it doesn't help that you walk around the apartment half naked like there isn't a guy who hasn't had any in THREE months living there too.

He felt a surge of pain, and cringed, looking as though he might almost cry.

That's what this is about? Because you haven't gotten a date in a while? You do realize that is ridiculous.

I don't care. I have needs. I can't go take care of those needs because you had me running drills every damn day after class and before missions. How the hell do you have so much energy?

Because I disciplined myself over these past couple of years to have a higher amount of endurance than  most regular meisters. At least I hope.

I turn into a damn weapon. I don't need drills.

You need to learn how to control yourself Dagen. We have been getting harassed by that soul thief. Who seems to strike when you lose all the blood in your head.

She was starting to get frustrated with him. All this complaining because he can't get laid? Nonsense.

I can control myself. I just don't want to deny some willing lady the time of her life. Not that you'll understand. You're still a virgin.

Malencia's face blushed until it was beat red. A few of the nearby guys looked in her direction, smiling at her.

You promised you wouldn't say that! What the hell Dagen?

You don't know how it feels, so you will never understand why I need a release as soon as possible.

The looks were getting worse, and she was now pissed at Dagen for his blatant statement. She acted rashly.

Fine, if you feel that way, how about a deal. We get the next few souls without any issues, or we catch the thief, I'll help you out.

What do you mean help me out?

You know damn well what I'm talking about. If it will make you shut up about this for a while, I may be able to keep my sanity. You still have to work for it though. I'm not one of those skanks you usually get. I do want to keep some standards.

She sat straight in her chair, confident, and a little disgusted. Dagen had a more devious smile on his face.

Jessie and Alex had taken their regular seats at the back of the class. Jessie was revelling in the obvious pain Dagen was feeling and Alex seemed to have her nose in a book. She was becoming rather adept at pretending to read while texting.

”Have you seen Dagen recently?”

”Mm hmm.”

”Wouldn’t it feel great to walk up to him and just sack him?”

Alex didn’t respond to that.

Look at Warren. He seems pretty down today.

He’s always like that.

Worse than normal. Silene’s not with him either.

I talked to her a bit last night. I think they were fighting.

Poor guy.

I’ll talk to him after class.

K.

Mortecai sprang into action before anyone could react, moving so fast towards Warren he just seemed to appear beside him. He grabbed him by the back of his head, ripping him up from his seat. "You won't be late again, Pop-It. Got it? Do it again and you will be sent to maintenance. Now shut up and stay awake." He shoved him backwards.

Like a bird of prey, he swooped down Dagen and Malencia next. "Do you think we're deaf? If you got blue balls, I suggest you practice your handy-work." He barked a round of laughter at his own joke, loud enough that several students near him covered their ears. "If you speak without being spoken to again, you'll get another maintenance, Pretty Boy. Same to you, Tits!"

He glanced at Alex and Jessie as he walked by, eyes like a bullwhip, audibly cracking as they split the air. "A reminder, cellphones are not allowed in this classroom. You can text your friends about how bad your damn lives suck after I finish making them worse." His work done, he returned to the front of the classroom, grinning like a shark.

Warren
Warren unceremoniously picked himself off the ground, running a hand through his hair where Mortecai had grabbed it. The sudden jerking motion had brought his headache and nausea back, and it took all his effort to swallow the vomit before it came back up. Pale, he returned to his seat and propped his head up with his arm. His gaze was focused on the front of the classroom, but he seemed to look right through it. 'Four more hours of this shit...'

To be honest, I expected Warren to get off a little worse than he did. Sure, he got pulled up by his hair, and then shoved, but his wasn't as humiliating as some of the others. Maybe I guess the main reason that I found all of this amusing, was so great because I wasn't the one on the receiving end. As Mortecai moved on from person to person, Steven gave me a nudge, and began to whisper a bit. "Is it just me, or does everyone get maintenance like, every other day?"

To this, I smirked, muttering my reply back to him as Mortecai continued to move along, a hushed tone to my voice. "It's just you. In reality, we all get it every day. Get it right."

At my reply, he just sorta shrugged, before returning his attention back to Mortecai. Our instructor had since moved from scolding Alex, back to the front of class, where he had a grin that if given by an actual shark, would have made me proud.

The class passed by to the final few minutes, and Archie was finishing a grand lecture so amazing, it had every student on the edge of their seats to listen. He imparted on them the wisdom they would need to go into battle, how to prepare for enemies by checking for important notes in briefings, as well as different exercises on how to improve soul wavelengths. Even Dagen managed to ignore his pain to pay attention. It's hard to believe that Archie was able to not only write quickly, but draw amazing pictures with great speed and accuracy. Mortecai stood up as the room erupted in applause.

Alright, shut up! I have an announcement. Apparently, boss man wanted me to let you guys know that you all will be starting team trials soon. Kishin eggs have been getting more frequent, and the rise of soul thieves ave pushed us to try drastic measures.

This was unheard of for Mortecai to actually be serious. He had in his hand a large folder.

In this folder are the potential team combos. I have finished my analysis on all of you, and will determine your teams for you. You will have over the weekend to ready yourselves for group missions, so get the eggs while they're hot. Also, there is a large reward for the capture of the soul thieves. 5000 death bucks to anyone who brings them in. So far, we have three confirmed, but there might be more. Now, get the fuck out of here. I have a date and need to get ready.

The students were dismissed.

”Teams? This’ll be fun,” said Jessie as she stood up.

Alex sighed. ”As long as we don’t get some jackass paired with us.” She walked over to Dean and brushed his arm. ”I’m going to see how Warren’s doing.”

He nodded. ”I’m going out for a smoke. You want anything?”

Alex scowled. ”I thought you were trying to quit.”

”I am.”

There was a brief pause. ”Whatever. Bring me a coffee.” She went up on her toes and pulled him in for a quick kiss. ”I’ll text you if Warren wants anything.” The two parted, Dean slipping out of the class and Alex on her way to Warren.

”I’m heading up to the room,” said Jessie as she walked by her sister.

”Enjoy your date,” she replied. The class was mostly empty when Alex finally reached Warren’s desk. She crouched down to meet his eyes. ”You don’t look so good.” She lightly patted his shoulder and stood straight. ”C’mon, let’s get out of here before Mortecai yells at us again.”

Warren turned his head to face her, a blank expression plastered on his face. "I'm fine." He said and stood up, slinging his bag over his shoulder. "Go on, I've got to get home." He turned on his heels, long strides carrying him out of the room.

When his apartment door was just in front of him Warren stopped, head sagging. He couldn't do this, whatever this was. The school, the friends, the training; he was only here because she wanted to be, he didn't care about any of it. Shaking his head, he shoved his way inside the apartment and threw his bag down, heading to the kitchen. Once he had found a cold can of soda, he returned to the living room and flopped himself down on the couch.

"What the hell?" Warren said, grunting in pain and reaching underneath his back to pull whatever had stabbed him out. It was a small blue piece of plastic with metal on the front; a USB. They didn't own any of those. He barely knew how to work a computer, much less a USB. Something was off.

Heaving a sigh, Warren stood up and walked to Silene's abandoned room, grabbing her laptop and sitting down on the edge of the bed. The screen lit up brightly when he pressed the power button, and it took him several attempts to get the password right, but he eventually did and it brought up the home screen. He inserted the USB into the drive. A blinking pop-up appeared asking if he wanted to watch a video.

He clicked yes, and the screen went black.

"Smile, honey."

Click.

"You're on camera."

The video slowly faded in from black. Silene was front and centre, tied to a chair and blindfolded. Her shirt was ripped in multiple places, she was missing half a pant leg, and there was a large bruise from her cheekbone to her jaw.

"Let's start . . . with your name."

Silene hesitated. She tried to keep her voice as steady as possible. "Silene Delacroix."

"Silene . . . isn't that a pretty name."

"W-who are you?"

He chuckled. "This isn't about me, Silene." A black leather hand came in from off-screen and brushed her bruised cheek, making her recoil away with a cringe. "It's about you." The hand grabbed her chin roughly, his thumb pressing into her bruise to make her scream, and turned her face towards him. "And what I might do to you if I don't get what I want." He let go and she turned away.

"What do you want from me..." All confidence in her voice was lost and replaced with a pitiful sob.

His suave voice had a cruel snide to it. "I want you to cry, scream, beg, pray that your friends will do the right thing to save you." He removed her blindfold. She kept her eyes closed as they adjusted to the light, still turned away from the man beside her. "Alex. Hason. Jessie. Warren." Silene opened her eyes after the last name. "Ahh, that still means something to you? Strange. After your fight last night, I wasn't expecting much..."

Silene looked up at her captor. Her voice was cracking into sobs, her eyes were misting over. "How do you know?"

He chuckled, brushing under her chin with the tips of his fingers. "Now why would I tell you that, hmm?" He took his hand away and spoke to the camera. "There is a witch among you at the NDWMA. If you want your precious Silene back, you will have her stand at the school gates tonight, alone. I will deal with her from there. If she does not comply..." He knealt down slightly, enough to reveal the lower half of his face, and brushed a lock of hair behind her ear. "Can you keep a secret, Silene?" He hid his face from the camera with his hand and whispered something into her ear. She closed her eyes in pain. ”Don’t tell anyone,” he said, turning away. ”I mean, who are you going to tell anyway, the walls?” He laughed cynically. ”Any last words for the audience?”

”Warren…” she looked into the camera as a single tear rolled down her cheek. ”I’m sorry.”

“No, Silene!” Warren screamed, clawing at the screen of the laptop like he could pull her free. It slipped from his lap, hitting the plush carpet below and snapping shut. The last note of the video echoed around the room, sounding forebodingly like a curtain call. He dropped down to pick it up, ripping it back open. “Silene!”

The monitor held nothing else for him. The screen stayed the same, asking him if he wanted to rewatch the video. He watched it again and again in the dark of the room, hands pulling at his hair; each replay was torture, but he deserved it. “Silene…” The unfamiliar feeling of helplessness pooled in his gut, and tears pricked at his eyes; he hadn’t felt like that since he was a little kid fighting his Dad, so utterly broken.

Without warning the laptop exploded as his fingertips ghosted across the keyboard, shards of burning glass lodging themselves in the palm of his hand. His mind didn’t even register the sting, robotically pulling the USB from the wreckage. It was singed, but still intact. “Gotta… Gotta call.. Witch…”

Warren felt far away as he pulled out his phone, clutching the usb to his chest tightly, rocking on the floor. The madness was stronger than it had ever been in his life, a thousand voices screaming in the back of his head for attention. It threatened to pull him away, but the thought of Silene’s tearful face was enough to keep him on track as he dialed Hason’s number into the cellphone. It rang three times before someone picked up.

“Hason…help…Silene…bring...laptop...” The phone imploded after that, a hysterical grin spreading across Warren’s face. “Ahahaha! It exploded! I wonder how many pieces it’s in?” Sitting up, the delirious man began to count the shattered bits of the phone

The day had been like any other; Steven and Hason had tried for a mission, but yet again had failed to get there in time to actually receive one that would pay enough. Luckily they had leftover cash from the last few, but it was still getting a bit sketchy cash wise, and they were going to have to start training more if they couldn't get one soon enough.

As they sat in their dorm room waiting for the next day to come, they were just sort of relaxing. Steven was reading a book he had borrowed from The Stranger, by Dr. Franken Stein, and Hason was watching something on their laptop. As they were just sort of doing whatever, Hason's cell began to ring.   She was a bit confused at first, because after all, why would anyone be calling at this point in the night? Without even checking who it was, she answered, and began to say hello, before promptly getting cut off. What she heard on the other end of the line was a somewhat broken, or distressed voice... Warren's voice. "Hason...help...Silene...bring...laptop."

As the other's sentence came to a close, there was a deafening explosion from the other end, and a somewhat horrified look grew in Hason's eyes. As she began to pack the laptop away, Steven closed his book, giving her a questioning look as he began to speak. "...What was that noise? I heard that from here... And why do ya' look so shocked?"

Her response was quick,, but it gave him the only answer he needed. "It was Warren."

At this, Steven gave off a light sigh, however he knew her concern was genuine because of her answer. He slipped a bookmark into 'How to Vivisect your victim; Redux', and began to get ready. He threw on a scarlet hoodie over his black T-shirt, and wore a pair of faded jeans with his tennis shoes. Hason wore a similar outfit; consisting of a lime hoodie over a white T-shirt, jeans, and tennis shoes. As she slipped the laptop bag's strap around her shoulder, she spoke, a somewhat urgent tone to her voice. "You ready?"

Steven replied by opening the door and motioning for her to lead, a blank tone to his voice. "Yep. Why don't ya' lead the way? I'd assume ya' know the route to their apartment better than I do.”

About fifteen minutes later, the two arrived at the apartment complex, where they then began to look for Warren's room. It had been quite some time since she had actually been here, as they had started meeting out at the sparring point, rather than meeting here first. When she finally found it, there was a bit of a relieved tone to her voice as she pointed towards a door number. "Ah... There it is. Sorry for not remembering, it's been awhile since I've been here."

Steven shrugged, replying to her in a monotone voice. "Eh, I mean... Ya' got us here and even found the room, so I can't really complain."

When no one came to answer, Steven put his ear to the door, where he heard something; it was as if someone was counting, a demented tone to their voice. Steven turned to Hason, attempting to open the door as he spoke. “He’s in there, but he sounds off… Like he’s counting, or some shit.”

As the door opened, Hason quickly made her way past Steven, a concerned look on her face. She had somewhat of an idea of what Warren was like right now, and it didn’t really fill her with confidence. She cupped her hands around her mouth as they walked in, as if calling out. “Hey, Warren! We’re uh… We’re here!”

Warren shoved a shard across the floor, pushing it into a large pile with the others. “Two-hundred and sixty-three,” he whispered, glancing towards the doorway at the sudden new voices. “Who’s there?” His steely eyes pierced the darkness, and a toothy grin consumed his face. “Are you here to die?”

Warren’s reply sent chills down both Hason, and Steven’s spine, however the reactions were not what one would expect; Hason had seen this before, and was rather cautious, contemplating even leaving and coming back later, as to avoid getting blown up. Steven, however, reacted a bit differently. He hadn’t seen this before, he had only heard stories, and they never mentioned it like this. He moved to stand in front of Hason, jade eyes glaring into the steel eyes the other Meister possessed. When he began to speak, his voice had an undertone of aggression. “It’s Steven and Hason. You called for us, didn’t you?”

“I…” Warren blinked several times, shaking his head. The broken picture of Silene pierced the haziness of his mind, forcing back the madness; the voices in his head roared and he fell to his knees, clutching at his hair. “Flashdrive...watch it,” he finally choked out, motioning to the small USB beside him.

Hason cautiously took the USB, careful not to startle Warren. She sat the bag down on the bed, loaded up the laptop, getting the flashdrive ready to play. Steven slowly turned his gaze towards the screen, glancing back routinely glancing back at Warren like he was a snake that might strike at any time… And then, Hason hit play.

The video played on, all while they both watched. Steven’s hand balled up into a fist, and then into a chain, taking great self control not to lash out at something, anything. Hason however, reacted with a blank stare. Her breathing seemed to slow down, becoming heavier with each passing second, and her eyes bored into the screen like it was a void. “I’m going,” she said quietly, standing up.

As the words left her mouth, she began to walk towards the door, however her movements were brought to a halt as Steven’s hand came down upon her shoulder. His voice was both caring and angry, completely free of its previous blank tone. “No, you aren’t.”

Hason began to struggle, trying to get away, trying to get to the door. She kept telling herself she had to turn herself in. That it was the right thing to do, that it would allow her to save Silene, and possibly make things right. She told herself it was her fault that this was even happening, that she somehow caused this. Tears began to stream down her face, and her voice came out heavy, her tone that of regret. “I’m going. I have to save Silene, I have to stop this before anything else happens to her, or anyone el-”

She was cut off as Steven pulled her back, and positioned himself in between her and the door.. As he spoke, his eyes began to stare into her being, and his tone had lost the concern it previously had, the blank tone once again overpowering all else. “Do you really think that even if you were to give yourself up to them, that they would just give her back? Do you really think that if they were fucked up enough to do this in the first place, that they would just drop it here?”

At this, Hason stopped moving. She didn’t really react further; she wasn’t sure how to react, she wasn’t sure what to do, to be honest. Steven was right. Why would they give Silene back, even if she were to turn herself in, but she herself didn’t have any better ideas. She turned herself to look at Warren, a somewhat regretful tone to her voice as she spoke. “What should we do...?”

“Go...” Warren trailed off, forcing himself to his feet. He was drenched in sweat from the effort of controlling himself, eyes bloodshot and sunken into his head. “Go show that to Alex and Jessie, then stay with them.” His voice was strained, breaking every other word. The madness drowned out all rational thoughts; the only thing he knew was Silene needed him and he was wasting time. “Hurry!”

At the other’s words, Hason began to pack up the laptop, taking the flashdrive and slipping it into one of her pockets. Once the laptop was packed up, she left the apartment, beginning a walk towards both Alex and Jessie’s dorm. As Steven began to follow, he turned around at the door, saying a few choice words to Warren before he would begin to continue following Hason. ”“Hey, don’t do anything stupid.”

And with those words, he was off, going in a light sprint to catch up to Hason as they began to head to Jessie and Alex’s dorms.

About fifteen more minutes later, Hason and Steven arrived outside of Jessie and Alex’s dorm room. As they reached the correct door, Steven motioned towards it, speaking as he did so. “Here we are. How about you knock this time?”

Hason nodded, and walked up to the door. She shakily rose her hand to the door, knocking on the wooden door, a bit of disheartened look to her face.

Warren did not look fine to Alex. She knew he wasn’t fine, but decided not to say anything and let him leave the classroom alone. He’d sort it out with Silene later. Alex jogged to catch up with her sister, who was texting away.

“What’s up?”

“He wants to know if we can push our date to two-thirty instead of three. I wanted to go home and freshen up a bit first, but I won’t have time to now...” she bit her lip.

Alex sighed and shook her head. “Jessie, you look fine. It’s not like this is your first date with him, and you’re only going for coffee anyway. Besides,” she smiled, “from what I heard, he likes a dirty girl.”

Jessie elbowed Alex in the rib. “Oh shut up! You’re more embarrassing than Dad.”

“Aww, wittle Jessie’s getting worked up over her big sister,” she said as if talking to a baby.

Jessie muttered something under her breath and stormed off, leaving Alex behind to laugh.

“You’ll be fine Jessie!” Speaking of dates, she thought as Dean walked over to her, hands stuffed in his pockets and that same neutral expression on his face.

“What happened?”

Alex was still giggling a bit when she replied. “Oh, nothing. Just us being silly. Where’s my coffee?”

“I decided not to go for a smoke.”

“Glad to hear you’re actually trying to quit now, but I was looking forward to that coffee...”

Dean put a hand on Alex’s shoulder so she would stop and turn to look at him. He brushed a lock of hair behind her ear and whispered to her: “I have something else you could look forward to when we get back to your dorm.”

Alex looked her boyfriend in the eyes. “If it’s not coffee, I’m not interested.”

Dean raised an eyebrow.

Alex sighed and grabbed his tie, dragging him with a quickened pace. “I hate you sometimes.”

He chuckled. “Love you too, Lexie.”

“Don’t call me that!”

Alex and Dean sat on the living room couch together, his feet on the table and her head in his lap. It was quiet, only the sound of turning pages momentarily breaking the silence. And then Jessie walked in.

“How was your date?” asked Alex, not lifting her eyes from her book.

“He’s cheating on me!”

She looked up.

“Well, actually, he’s cheating on another girl, but he’s cheating on her with me!”

Alex sighed and returned to her book. “So not good then, okay.”

“What a fucking prick,” said Jessie before slamming the door to her room. The next interruption was a few minutes later when somebody knocked on the door.

“I’m getting changed!” yelled Jessie.

Alex looked up at Dean. “Please?”

He closed his book - a crime novel about a girl who was suspected of being a witch - and answered the door. It took him a moment to recognize the two faces. “Can I help you?”

“We’re looking for Alex and Jessie. Are they here?” asked Hason. Her voice was shaky, her face wore a worried expression, and a laptop was being carried under her arm.

He knew exactly why they were here. He could imagine Warren in his apartment on his hands and knees, weeping for Silene, praying she would come back. He wondered how she was faring in the hands of his master. He wouldn’t have to wonder for long. “Yeah. Come in.” He held the door for them and stood aside to let them pass.

Steven waved for Hason to go in first, and then merely stood in the doorway. Hason slowly set up the laptop, turning it towards them with the video pulled up, before moving herself away, not wanting to watch that again.”Press… Press play. She muttered, her voice barely audible.

“Jessica,” said Alex, staring at the screen. “Come here please.”

She was throwing on a light sweater when she came charging out of her room. “I’m here. What’s up?”

Alex pointed at the laptop and pressed play.

Jessie stood behind her sister with her arms crossed. Alex touched Dean’s arm, and he wrapped it around her for support. He used all his effort not to cry out to her and confess. I did that to her, he thought. He remembered how easy it was for him. Walking down the street alone, a sick mind would think she was asking to be taken away. And the bruise from when he punched her while trying to run away, his fist still burned from it. “Cut her up a bit too,” he said. “Give them a better show. Be careful with the flesh, we don’t want her bleeding out before the grand execution.”

There was an icy silence when the video ended.

“How’s Warren?” said Alex.

Hason’s voice was somewhat shaky, the tone of someone just trying to hold it together breaking through. “He’s… He’s lost it…”

Alex opened her mouth to say something else, but all that came out were sobs. She turned around and fell into Dean’s embrace.

Jessie rubbed Alex’s back and mouthed the word “Later,” to Hason and Steven.

Neither Hason nor Steven complied, feet rooted to the ground. "S-sorry, but... We're not leaving. Warren told us to stay grouped together with you guys, and... I honestly don't know where we'd go right now." Hason whispered, her voice shaky and apologetic.

As she finished speaking, Steven stepped in front of her, chin raised defiantly. “Not only that, but Warren's out there, most likely being a dumbass...” His aggressive voice trailed off, before he began to point towards the window, voice picking up violently as he spoke. “Why the hell are we standing around, doing jackall to help him!? Jackass’ll get himself killed without us!”

Jessie sighed. "Fine. I'll go, but give my sister a minute, please." She looked at Dean. "I trust him."

He nodded, Alex now quiet.

Jessie ushered Hason and Steven out of the dorm. "They'll come when she's ready. The last few weeks were really rough for Alex. Dean's last kishin egg fight put him in the hospital, our grandmother had a heart attack, The Reading Café almost burned down... and now this. It's too much for her."

Each and every one of them was silent for the walk, a bit on edge after what they had seen...
