I stumbled upon these as I was organizing my clusterchansey of an image folder which reminded me that this place exists. As long as I'm here I might as well post these before they inevitably get lost on my hard drive again.

I remember being in the irc channel when the first one happened but I can't remember the context of the second image. Pretty sure it's from here though.

Edit: Good old language filter.

News & Announcements / Re: Pokémon Universe Soundtrack Album

Thanks Hiteryan, definitely downloading this. I think I can hear quite a bit of influence from the gen 3 music(R/S/E more than FR/LG), which was probably my favorite out of all the games in the series. I think Big Dark Spooky Dungeon was probably my favorite out of the bunch. I don't think there are really any songs in there that I disliked. The music was very well done; it had that Pokemon vibe, but it was original and didn't sound like you were just directly copying the music from the games.

Half the reason people leave is they get on, see it's advertising a game, and then see it's not out. They either leave after that, or look around to see how long it's going to take. When they see the latest topics, they abandon it because there's going to be no game— if we clarify the game is no longer in the works and that this is just a forum for Pokemon, it might get some people to stick around. Not sure, but it's an idea.
I think this is spot-on.

I would say raising a bigger community would do good. And to do that, we might wanna make more kinds of departments based on Pokémon so people can discuss over the different things they do Pokémon related. So we can make a section for the official games, the manga's, the trading card game, etc. And to keep those sections active is a second. So best is to have a bunch of people whom like a certain part of a department and are specialized in it in some way. Let's say, we have someone who is really active in the Pokémon Trading card game section and pretty much keeps up to date to that kind of stuff because he or she is very into this. Maybe they can write articles or set up a discussion about how good the cards are and such. Even host tournaments over there.

As for recruitment, I would leave that out for now. First thing we need to do is get this forum back alive again. After that, we can think over if we want to revive the MMO project until we got a living community going on again. Because yes, we have a lot of viewers, but they mostly indeed just check if the game is already running. Because people check out this site because it is referring that there is a game in the making. The art department is as good as dead right now. But if we can get it going again after we set up a community I might be able to host Art contests to keep things circulating over there.
This is a good idea. The most difficult part is going to be finding people with the time and dedication to get things going and keep the forum from dying again.

I would help out if I could, but not only do I not have a lot of free time, I'm not anywhere near as interested in Pokemon as I used to be. If the forum got going again, I might show up once every couple of days and post in off-topic subforums or hang around in the irc channel, but I doubt I'll ever be consistently active here.

I understand this is hard for some (myself included), because we've been through a lot. The easy way out would be to let the site continue as a Pokemon community. We'd just remove all the MMO related pages and forum boards. Then we'd assign some new Admins who're going to advertise and run the site.

What I read in your replies is that the new pokemon-universe.com could focus on General pokemon chit chat, role playing and the balance server. It would probably not attract the big crowd, but just the people who are interested in RPing or playing competitive pokemon.

Might not be much, but atleast the site will not go away.
Hopefully somebody with enough free time and dedication will take over and get things up and running. Despite the fact that PU gets 100 unique visitors a day, it's been dead for quite a long time now. Changing up things on the forum might stir up some activity, but that alone isn't going to be enough. I doubt many of the old members are going to return, so whoever takes over will probably need to think of a few ways to attract new members.

I think a big problem is that forums don't seem to be very popular anymore(Although, there are definitely at least a few exceptions. Maybe they haven't died out as much as I think they have; I haven't really been keeping an eye out for active forums.) Sites like Reddit have become extremely popular, and that seems to be one of the go-to options for most people who are looking for an online community. I think people are probably more likely to look for a Pokemon-related subreddit or something than to do search for a Pokemon forum. I think some self-advertising of some sort will probably be required.

Don't get me wrong though, I think it's possible to make this place active again; it's just going to need a lot of work and dedication.

Even though I was an edgy, annoying 12 year old when I joined, I still have fond memories of this forum. I met some really awesome people, learned some valuable lessons, and had a lot of fun. I'm not going to lie; this community definitely had its ups and downs, but I'm really going to miss this place.

Also, I want to thank the PU Team. You guys have gotten a lot of shit over the years, and a lot of people didn't really appreciate all of the work that you guys have put into this project. Thanks for dedicating so much of your own time to developing this game. You guys are awesome.

Hi Chaos,

I also have my questionmarks when the game will be finished.

But... At least I am really still working on the project. Look at this screenshot of the current status of the map editor. You like this?

Is the game still going to be tile-based, or will it be changed to full 3D movement like the current gen Pokemon games?

If I recall correctly, the reason they switched was because Mr Dark and Urmel ran into a complicated problem and couldn't get the code to work correctly.

Something along those lines anyway, someone that knows code would be able to explain this better then me.
This probably wouldn't be the most appealing idea since they've already switched languages once, but maybe if they can't switch back to C++, they would be better off switching to a language with more documentation, like Python or something. I don't know how much work they would be undoing by switching again, as I don't know how much progress has been made since the switch to GO. It all depends on whether or not they would be able to make progress quickly enough to offset all of the work they would be undoing.

Who knows, maybe they can manage to make things work with GO. But even when the game is released, if it's as difficult to use this language as I'm being told, I think it could cause some serious issues down the line. It would really suck for both the devs and the players if some sort of game-breaking bug took forever to be patched because the code is so difficult to figure out.

You were pretty heavy on the ellipses there, you might want to use them less. I get that you were trying to get it across that the main character is exhausted, but in my opinion, it would have been better to convey how exhausted she is through actual thoughts running through her head, rather than through punctuation. Not that you shouldn't use ellipses at all, but I think it would look much cleaner and just better overall with just an ellipsis here and there.

There were a few sentences with lots of commas that might have sounded better if they were split into two sentences or something ("As the words left my mouth, a barrier seemed to glass over the entire village, the ball of flame smashing into the shield of light, and dissipating as the shield began to die out..." for example).

Other than that, there's not much to provide criticism for. I thought the spell names were a little odd, but that comes down to personal preference. Criticizing that would just be extremely nitpick-y.

Sup Baka? How's Japan?

There was a playable beta 5 years ago, before the switch to GO. Call me thick - but unless that code has been chucked out, wouldn't that be a better place to start than a half-written engine in a language nobody understands?
This sounds like a good idea to me. If the engine is only half-written, and GO is such a poop language, they might as well switch back to C++(I think that's what they were using) and develop with that. I think they would make much better progress with a decent language.

I think I remember you. You were in Omnicide and some of the other early RPs here right?

It's good to see even just one person come back, the forums had a small spike in activity and then kind of died again over the Summer. Hopefully more people will start to come back, although I think nobody is really going to bother until the game is finished (It's almost there though, from what I hear).

I'm doing quite well actually, trying to get a job, and getting pretty darn close.
Who knows? Things may turn out well.

(who's Toast?)
I was TrainerX, Simulacrum, and Obamasnow.

I've been working on getting a car lately, but rednecks want too much for their sh*t. I heard my cousin is selling his though, so I might get lucky.

Xetroc, what's the name of your channel? I wasn't aware that you made videos.

I don't think I've seen you around for quite a while Leo, how have you been?

I had intentions to start a bunch of threads, I've even got them written down this time. I've been too busy to actually start them though, I've been dealing with a ton of personal poop lately. Hopefully now that it's Summer we'll get some more members, but so far it looks like we haven't had much luck.

On the more mainstream, popular side, I thought the Hunger Games were pretty good, but not spectacular, and while I think that they are a bit overhyped, I did fine them pretty good.
I had the same opinion. I originally wasn't going to read the series at all, because it seemed like it was really overrated. They were good, but as you said, not spectacular.

I really enjoyed the Harry Potter books, but for reasons I'm not quite sure of, they've lost a lot of their appeal to me over the years.
I started that series in first grade, and I've experienced the same thing. It used to be my favorite series, but I can't really read them anymore. They just seem different.

I never read the Percy Jackson books, but I heard that they were good. They sounded kind of overrated, so I never bothered with them.

I've heard good things about the Divergent books, but I haven't read them either. I don't know what it is exactly, but someone described the setting to me, and it didn't appeal to me at all.

So yesterday I started Neuromancer, and I really like it so far. It's considered one of the greatest books of the cyberpunk genre, and I can see why. I haven't made it too far yet, but I really like the writing style. The dialogue is great as well; so far, none of it has felt forced. Badly written or awkward dialogue is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to books.

I liked the Ender's Games books, but I wouldn't call them one of my favorites. For some reason I liked Bean's stories more than the main ones.
I'm pretty sure the ones about Bean were written after the Ender books. The Bean stories seem like they're better written, so I guess he just improved as a writer in the time between Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow.

I like Ender's Shadow better than Ender's Game as well. Bean is just more interesting to me. Getting into Bean's head and seeing how his mind worked was a different experience than with Ender. I think it's a combination of how interesting it is to analyze him as a character, and Card improving.

I think that's the main thing that draws me to his books. Card lets you really get into the head of the characters and get a good idea of how they think, and then you're kept wondering how the character is going to react to new situations. He seems to really get into making the main characters. I haven't really read any other books that take it to the level he does.

Favorite books? Easy, Christopher Paolini's Inheritance Cycle. It was when I read the first book, Eragon, that I first decided to get into writing and make it a career.
I thought the Inheritance Cycle was pretty good as well. I've read books since that I think are better, but the Inheritance Cycle was a lot better than some of the newer stuff out there. I'm not really a big fan of most of the newer books out there.

Lord of the Rings and its spin offs, Redwall series by Brian Jacques. Those books made me want to be an author (though I quit on that), and I still reread them often.
I read the first Redwall book when I was in like 4th grade, but I never did finish the series. I don't know why, I always meant to. I'll have to see if I can find them. Lord of the Rings is also good, but I don't remember much besides the basic plot. Last time I read those books I was in like 5th or 6th grade.

One of my newer favorites is the Ender's Game series. I'm only two books in, but they're really good. The Pathfinder series is another of Orson Scott Card's series, and those were also really good. I love the setting, and the plot is great as well. I just liked the way the books were written in general; I highly recommend them.
