General Chat / I wish Gen 5's story was a bit more gray
« on: January 18, 2012, 09:09:30 PM »
It's interesting to see a group that wants to free pokemon, as it hangs a lampshade on the fact that many trainers just stuff a ton of pokemon in the PC to never or almost never be taken out. Some trainers just breed pokemon with each other so they can get pokemon with higher IVs just so they can fight better. there's a darker side to this that seems glossed over, but it seems to me that Plasma is still made out to be mostly evil due to the guy in charge wanting to do this for totally selfish reasons.

They don't even pretend Plasma isn't a bad group since early in the game grunts admit Ghestis is just trying to trick trainers with his speeches and the sages just want to forcefully separate pokemon from trainers. Then there's the possibly anvilicious dialogue about pokemon and people needing each other that's stated by characters that don't seem to give any thought that maybe some actions like capturing pokemon you don't intend to train might be wrong.

I just kind of wish this was explored more, and neither side was viewed as totally good or bad with the exception of N being a good guy thta was just manipulated by Ghestis.

General Chat / Confused about getting dream world abilities.
« on: January 17, 2012, 02:54:52 AM »
I've recently been trying to get my pokemon's dream world ability, but I seem to be missing something. I put him to sleep, and went to the forest, but couldn't find him. I woke him up, and went to the forest, but didn't see anything. Do I need to let him sleep a certain amount of time? I can only do this once a day. I didn't let mine sleep long enough because I'm still working on training him and such.

Can someone explain exactly what I'm supposed to do?

General Chat / Overpowered
« on: October 06, 2011, 07:47:45 PM »
I've had discussions about what is overpowered, and what isn't, and I don't think I fully understand what the standard is for saying something is overpowered.

I can see why anything that has a base total of 600+ is going to have a clear advantage against most everything else, but I'm not sure why certain strategies are banned. The thing I get the most flak for is my swift swim poliwrath while drizzle is going on. There are a dozen or so ways it can be beaten, and that's if it's able to set up in the first place to sweep.

How do you decide that something is overpowered? How do you know you aren't going too far by just banning whatever is popular? I realize that it can be restricting to always see the same teams, but you shouldn't bash something just because it works.

I just have trouble wrapping my head around this.

Ideas & Suggestions / Type resistances
« on: July 28, 2011, 12:01:25 AM »
I don't know if anyone has brought this up, but does anyone think it would be a good idea to make types universally resistant against their own attack types? We all know some types like ground and fighting aren't resistant to attacks of those types, and I don't know why the developers made it that way. I think it would be good if it was that way.

This could make some problems, like dragons only being weak to ice attacks. This change would remove Kingdra's one weakness, not to mention dragons are probably too powerful to remove one of their weaknesses.

Steel types are the only type resistant to dragon, and their offensive power is limited. Perhaps we could make dragons weak against steel, which would match up with the myths of knights slaying dragons.

ghosts may or may not can do with just being weak to dark attacks.

Would this make too dramatic a change in balance?

General Chat / Rotational battles
« on: March 24, 2011, 12:05:37 AM »
So how does everyone like rotational battles? Personally I like them better than triple battles, and find them one of the better innovations of Generation 5. After reading the page on Bulbapedia about it, it says that being one of the inactive two in battle won't reset the slow start ability. That means the other two pokemon can fight during the first five turns, and after five turns you can bring Regigigas to the front and sweep.

I wonder if it's possible for two pokemon to have protect, and switch back and forth while using protect (or detect) without its chance of failing increase. If so, it could break a battle. Just poison or burn your enemy, then switch between protectors. Anyone without feint would be killed off.

I've only been through a couple of battles, but I like the idea. I wonder if other people do as well.

General Chat / Funny things I thought about.
« on: January 04, 2011, 01:31:09 AM »
Think about it. Some kid starts his journey, gets stronger, and in that must be less than a year's time gets all the badges and beats the five most powerful trainers in the game. They must go through champions all the time. It's just something kind of funny I thought about recently.

Of course part of the reason is that the pokemon aren't really at max level anyway. If the highest levels in the game are in the sixties, why is the max level 100? Why didn't the devs just make the maximum pokemon level be 50 or 60? Then at least you wouldn't be able to grind your pokemon to higher levels than the Elite Four and Champion.

Ideas & Suggestions / Levels and badges
« on: December 06, 2010, 06:01:57 AM »
I notice in the games that as long as you catch the pokemon yourself, it won't disobey you regardless of your badge count. Are you planning to change that? I think it would be more realistic to not just have traded pokemon become disobedient. It would help prevent people from just level grinding to get their next badge.

You should probably make it so no pokemon after a certain level will obey you completely unless you've gotten enough badges. Not just traded ones.

General Chat / Pokedex entries
« on: November 11, 2010, 12:46:21 AM »
Why do you suppose pokemon have pokedex entries that contradict things that they can or can't do? There are multiple pokemon like this, but the thought occured to me as I was looking at Garchomp's page on Bulbapedia. Check out the trivia entry:

    *  Although Garchomp is said to fly at the speed of sound, Pidgeot has a lower speed stat but is said to fly at Mach 2 speed, twice the speed of sound.
    * Though its Pokédex entries make note of its astounding flying abilities, Garchomp cannot learn Fly or even possess the ability Levitate. Similarly, although Garchomp is known as the Mach Pokémon, it cannot learn Mach Punch or any other variation of Quick Attack (including Quick Attack itself).
    * Despite Pokédex entries noting that, when in flight, Garchomp's wings create blades of wind that can fell nearby trees, Garchomp cannot learn Air Slash or Air Cutter.

Why is this?

Quests & Plots / A couple of ideas.
« on: August 11, 2010, 08:51:07 PM »
I was wondering if you would consider having a certain spot where new quests can be obtained, instead of going to certain people for all quests. As in, you could go around talking to people to collect quests, or you could just check the board in every town to see what new quests there are.

Much like the do in the Mystery Dungeon games.

Also try to make it where there is a larger number of quests for higher levels than at lower levels. We don't really need a bunch of quests in the early levels where the reward is exp points, because leveling up is fast. However when you get high up you will be wanting quests to give a bunch of exp points to reduce the grinding.

Early in the game most rewards can be pokedollars (or whatever the currency is) and possibly items. Later in the game when collecting money is easier most quests rewards can be exp.

General Chat / Finding a Feebas is a pain in the butt.
« on: August 08, 2010, 08:00:41 PM »
Does anyone know why finding a Feebus is so hard. Milotic is a great pokemon, but does finding its preevolved form really need to be that difficult? Does anyone know why the devs did this?

I'm just asking because I'm curious. If the PU team wants to make Feebus easier to find I'm all for it, but I'm mainly asking just because I'd like to know if there's a big reason the devs decided to make Feebus such a pain to find.

There's a move called follow me that forces pokemon to attack a certain pokemon in double battles. However for some strange reason Shuckle never got this move. It totally fits him, and I don't see why they wouldn't give it to him.

I was wondering if PU could correct this, and maybe some other moves that people might think about.

Pokémon Roleplay / Elite Four to the Rescue
« on: August 03, 2010, 06:06:34 PM »
Story

A criminal organization calling themselves the Pokemon Rulers has kidnapped the four most renowned Pokemon Professors to work for them: Professors Oak, Elm, Birch, and Rowan. The police can't do anything to stop them, so it falls on the shoulders of the greatest Pokemon trainers to rescue the professors. The setting can take place in Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh. whichever one the players would rather be in. It doesn't matter.

Profile
Name: (self explanatory)
Gender: (self explanatory)
Age: (self explanatory)
Appearance: (self explanatory)
Pokemon: (list the pokemon that you will be using. Since you are a member of the elite four, this assumes your pokemon are high enough to have learned any move it can learn. If you want different pokemon later, just mention going to the PC and switching for a new one.)
Other: (anything extra you care to mention)

I will be one of the Elite Four, and I will need three additional players. Maybe someone else to play Champion, if we include a fifth player, otherwise we'll just say the Champion stayed at the Pokemon League to handle the business matters there. If I get three players, that would be wonderful. If I'm lucky enough to get more, we'll find a way to fit you in.

My Profile
Name: Chad
gender: Male
Age: 19

Appearance:He wears a blue vest over a white shirt, with blue pants and a captain's hat. He is a water type trainer with a sailor moteif. Much like a sailor, he is muscular.

Pokemon: Blastoise, Swampert, Tentacool, Gyarados, Buizel, and Milotic.

Other: Most of what he uses are water types, though he has caught and trained other types before. Water is just his prefered type.

Ideas & Suggestions / Hidden Power
« on: August 02, 2010, 11:48:20 PM »
Can we change hidden power so it's easier to get the one we want. Back when I played Shoddy Battle sometimes we'd use Hidden Power to give a pokemon an attack type that they otherwise couldn't use. Even though it's not quite as useful to physical attackers, and has a base power of 70 (I think), it's still useful.

However it depends on IVs, and getting exactly what you want is very difficult in a game where you can't readily alter your pokemon's IVs. so can we change it to something easier, perhaps?

Trainers Lounge / Favorite pokemon type?
« on: July 31, 2010, 10:08:55 PM »
Does anyone have a favored type? Has anyone ever tried using a mono type team like they do in gyms?

Mine is water. It's only resisted by three types, and nothing is immune except pokemon with the Hydration and Water Absorb abilities. There's a part water type for almost every other type out there, which makes setting up a mono type team easy. Plus when I play the games I usually find a flying type and Geodude early which covers my water starter's weaknesses.

New Trainers / Welcome / Hi
« on: July 31, 2010, 01:45:24 AM »
Hi everybody. Call me Chad. I came looking for a Pokemon MMO, and I found this. Let's see if it goes anywhere.

So a little bit about me. The first pokemon game I played was Yellow, and if I recall correctly I had at least one of every pokemon you can catch in Yellow including a Mew. Yes one of those Mew glitches actually worked. I didn't have Red or Blue, and for whatever reason I didn't trade with my younger cousin. Probably because of lack of opportunities.

I got into pokemon because of my younger cousin, and found it to be an interesting and surprisingly complex game. It wasn't as simple as I thought it would be. Each starter had different advantages, and there were all kinds of other pokemon I could get.

After that I played both Stadium games, Crystal, got r/s/e at the same time and two GB Advanced to trade with, Colluseum  and X D, and lastly Diamond and Pearl. Seeing how expensive these games are, it's a big investment.

One of my prized pokemon is a Parasect that's bred for false swipe, spore, stun spore, and X Scissor. It is my pokemon catcher and can snag me just about anything.I also have a chansey with softboiled and heal bell that I'm using as a cleric. I have other pokemon I use as utility pokemon, or HM slaves as some call them.

If I was a monotype trainer, I would be a Water type trainer. Only three types resist it, nothing is immune except with certain abilities, and there's a part water type for almost every type out there. I do like other pokemon types, though.

Pokemon is a good RPG with an overwhelming array of different pokemon. I don't know what they're going to do next, but they consistently improve the series with each generation. I have thought of things like the addition of an Alien type which usually gets shot down, and attacks that are dual types such as an attack that's both water and ice or dragon and fire. I have also wanted to see an actual Fire/Dragon type for the sake of fire types not being universally weak against water.

Dang, I said I'd give a little bit about me but I could just type all day. I'll stop now.
