Other Games / Ryzom MMORPG!
« on: October 01, 2012, 11:46:44 pm »
So.. I know we've all played various games over the years.. And most MMORPGs tout the same perks and benefits. Most even cost the same amount or have similar "pay options" through Online Shops/etc.

So I was skeptical, to say the least, when I scoured the web for a new MMO to play.

After trying 2 or 3 Free-to-Play games and being disappointed, I finally caved and tried the Sci-fi based MMO called Ryzom.

Ryzom has some things that you just can't find in most other games. With a "look" to its base graphics that is similar to many MMO's such as LOTRO, Everquest, WoW and others, Ryzom has offered up something mostly unique to the gaming world.

There are endless options, your character(s) are able to be much more unique and specialized than in any other MMO that I have played.

The 4 base skills (Fight, Magic, Craft, Harvest) are only the very tip of the iceberg. As you level (in a system that makes leeching and cheating to get ahead pretty much impossible) you will achieve certain levels that will open your character to more refined options.

For instance, when you get to level 51 in Fight, your "Skill Tree" splits into 3 categories, 1 Handed Melee, 2 Handed Melee and Close Combat.

Each level you gain gives you 10 Skill Points that you use to buy spells, abilities, crafting plans and more. This is a major note in gameplay because you will be able to create your OWN spells.

For example...

Your Fight spells come with "stanzas" which you are able to mix and match with other stanzas to create particular effects. You can combine some abilities to create a stronger attack, or take some away to make it more effective and cost less to cast. Playing with your stanzas you can even create "free cast" spells, which take no Stamina/Will to cast, which can get you out of a harsh spot!

These things even pale in comparison to the sheer genius of the crafting and harvesting skills.

So why am I posting this? Well, now is the absolute perfect time to start Ryzom...

The Ryzom MMO originally had 4 separate servers, broken up by language. But as of right now a full game merge is happening, and all 4 populations will be starting over on one server!

All characters that are Free-to-play start over at level 1 in everything unless they won an event, and even most of the major long-term players are starting over to rediscover things they haven't done or needed to do in a long while!

So the bulk of the game's patrons will be starting on an almost perfect even playing field! All inventories are being wiped, all Banks, all Guilds, All player apartments, all in game currency!

The game is Free-to-play to a max of 125 skill level per skill, and Pay-to-Play players are able to reach 250. The subscription plan is rather inexpensive.. $10.25 a month, cheaper if you get more than 3 months at a time.

I haven't played too very long, just a month or two, but I have found nearly every single person to be extremely helpful, even when I was just a level 1 character..

The world of Ryzom (called Atys) is expansive and will have new areas and options with the relaunch (tomorrow or Weds)

So, feel free to look 'em up! Read reviews, read the forums.. The game has been around for over 8 years, so they're doing plenty right.

Who knows, you might enjoy it enough to subscribe... If not, then enjoy it for free! It's a blast.

Here is the main site!

I've been fooling around with some of the NPC ideas needed on the To Do List, and it just dawned on me...

If the colors I'm using (custom, because MS Paint has a horribly inadequate color palette) will even work in the game... it would be silly to work out an NPC that can't translate into the game itself...

So, if there IS a specific color palette in use for the game, could I get a copy of it, in png format of course, to copy and thus use proper PU colors?

Thanks!!!!!

PS: I'm not very good at this, but I think I'm getting better, I hope that with each tiny project I play with that I get better, and eventually produce something worth your time to look at and such!

Development / Re: To Do List
« on: June 19, 2012, 03:08:45 am »
I notice it hasn't been changed for a while, and I also know that Mr Dark is currently not here, so I'm not trying to be a pest or impatient.

But I'd like to help develop some of the things on the list (if I'm at all capable, that is! I'll fiddle with it and try as hard as I can to make some of it!) BUT I'm lacking some information...

First, is there a standard "tile" size I should be working inside, for the "Ground/Environment" art? (eg, 20x20 tiles of the "Beach Sand")

Second, is there a maximum size for the Buildings or other "Objects" that are still needed?

I assume that the NPCs needed will need to be the same general size as the Paperdolls provided for the recent competitions, but can they be Taller/Fatter?

The reason I ask these questions is because I've developed Maps for another MMO, and done so very well, but always had a "Mapping Program" that held all the tiles, objects and NPC graphics that I'd need. So with that experience I assumed there is a Tile size we're shooting for.

I don't have a ton of free time, but I'm more than happy to at least try to develop some of those basic tiles!

Hope this post isn't duplicating questions elsewhere, or seeking answers already given. But if someone could post that information, I'd really appreciate it, and it'd give some of the others the info they'd need to try to help create at least some of the pixel art!

Thanks

Other Games / Ultima Online

I know that it's an older online game, but I figured maybe a few people here have played it or still do.

I have a pretty decent account on Atlantic Server, millions in gold and a 17x17 house (1x1 less than the max size) that I have been trying to find a new home for. I no longer really play the game, but I don't want to lose everything I had or leave it to scavengers.

Let me know if anybody here plays... Maybe I can find someone to take the house...

Other Entertainment / Favorite Books!

Alright... I've seen several topics on Music and Movies and Anime... So I have to ask..

What are your top five Books or Book Series. Include Authors, so others can possibly take your recommendation and go read it/them.

For me, I enjoy Fantasy for the most part, as is obvious below.

1) Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (and Brandon Sanderson since Jordan's death)
2) Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson (and Ian Esslemont and a very close second)
3) The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks
4) Elantris by Brandon Sanderson (Warbreaker and Mistborn were good too.)
5) Codex Alera by Jim Butcher (not epic writing, but great stories and ideas)

I personally think that Wheel of Time completely blows Lord of the Rings out of orbit when it comes to pure story, writing style, ideas, and possibilities... I never liked the whole "elves and goblins and dwarves, (oh my!)" thing... I bless Robert Jordan's soul for being original and not ripping off of LOTR.

As for the Malazan Books... dear gods above... Some of the most intriguing and enrapting stories ever. Even if somewhat hard to get into at the start.

That's it for me... What about you?

Art Work / Looking for Clips...
« on: September 09, 2010, 08:45:48 pm »
I searched and couldn't find any topic/post already showing this... So I apologize if I'm posting this here; and there is another that topic this should go in.

But I'm looking to do a collage of clips and pictures of a Pokemon. I would prefer to do Eevee or one of its evolutions, but I don't recall how often they would appear in the shows/movies.

So what I need to know:

Is there anywhere I can go to get clips, screen shots or pictures of Pokemon from the movies or the shows??

I'd like to give it a shot, I've done Picture Collages before ((Creating a scene or portrait from multiple unique clips and images)) but I'd like to try this and post it... Maybe I should start with Pikachu, since it's so often shown in anything Pokemon related.

Thanks

Trainers Lounge / Help with any type of writing!
« on: September 06, 2010, 03:06:35 am »
Hello there!

I wasn't exactly sure where to post this, as there isn't a specific Forum board set up for this sort of thing, so I put it here, and hopefully each of you that read this will be content with that choice.

I am a writer, an author really, I have been writing stories for nearly 20 years (yes I'm a bit older than most people here ^^) and have, I've been told, developed quite a talent for it. As a writer, I love to read. I have read a great number of books and stories and have come to appreciate the efforts of a good proof-reader.

So I am offering my assistance to anybody who wishes to write a story, a quest, a series of short stories, and pretty much anything else to do with writing! I will gladly (if you can be patient and deal with my schedule at work) help develop and edit anything you want me to proof-read... I will also gladly assist anybody who wants help with writing out their role play scenario/etc if you are having a hard time putting it into words!

Shoot me a PM if you wish to engage my talents!

Trainers Lounge / Starter Pokemon... Do you always use them forever?
« on: September 03, 2010, 07:11:16 pm »
I've always seen a lot of... Well, interest and hype about which starter is better and who likes them most, etc...

But I've always found it somewhat difficult to include the Starters in any of my past Teams for many reasons or their types (be they single or dual type). Personally, I like to keep them as long as I can as a part of my active team... But it's mainly for sentimental reasons and not preference, with the exception of very few starters. Even then it's because some have a great use further on as Dual types or with necessary strong attacks/uses...

So, the question is...

Do you always include your Starter as a major part of your team?
or
Do you switch them out for something you feel is more useful (either in battle or for RP)?
