If only I had a phone...

I wonder how long it will take before this gets copied and made into a cheap mobile game you can get for a dollar.

If I may:

@Toasty, I understand that you didn't intend to offend anyone but the thing I picked up was that you asked WHY Cincy had written the piece where it is perfectly understandable that he/she (I'm not too sure) intended to share a story. Even Shakespeare wrote kindergarten pieces once.
That's not what I meant when I asked that. I definitely could have said that better. Basically, what all of my questions were asking was what exactly the story was intended to be. Was it intended to be just a short story? Did she intend to expand on it, and maybe write some sort of second chapter? Is it supposed to be just, as the title implies, a short and simple legend; or did she want to make it into something more?

Again, that kindergarten comment was not comparing her writing to that of a kindergartner, it was just a comment about the length of it. It was neither a negative nor a positive comment.

Yes, Shakespeare "wrote kindergarten pieces once." I realize that, which is why I bothered to give constructive criticism. If I didn't realize that, I would not have provided criticism, or even posted for that matter.

And I'm back in this thread again... I'm seriously leaving this time.

Also, the "tone" of this post is completely neutral. Until I get better at using my words, I'll just include that.

Pokedex Entries / Re: [Pokedex Entry] Butterfree
« on: April 01, 2014, 10:41:56 PM »
You sure are dedicated. I wouldn't be able to churn out high quality entries all the time like this. Then again, writing has never been my strong suit. Actually, words aren't really my strong suit. I have a hard time putting my thoughts into words. What I think is generally a lot more intelligent than what I say.

I especially like the entries for the older pokemon though. I don't know if it's the nostalgia it brings me, or if they're just better (probably both), but I enjoy reading such detailed descriptions of the pokemon from the games I played when I was little.

Yeah, I've been meaning to get on the balance server. I would have been on over the past couple of weeks, but I was busy, and the heatsink on my CPU went to sh*t, so then I had to order a new heatsink.

That was pretty off-topic. Anyway, I plan to get on the balance server once I've done a bit of reading and throw a team together.

Would it be an idea to let members post their timezone and 1 preferable online game to play in a new topic (or blanc if they don't have one)?

That way, you'll have a better view of the active members, and the timezones they're in without messing up this topic.
Including perhaps some ideas for online games.  :)
I didn't notice this post before, but I just spotted it now.

Yes, that's the plan. This probably won't happen for a while though.

I've been thinking; maybe we could come up with some sort of contest thing. I don't really know what it would be for, but it would be cool if we did something like the contests for the professor (For those who weren't around, there was a series of contests in which a name, bio, and sprite for the professor were selected from entries made by the members of the forum.). I'm not sure what it would be, but maybe we could have some sort of mapping or pixel art competition thing, or something like that. Not sure what the reward would be, but I bet if we did a few different contests like this, we could catch some attention.

I guess that just shows how much testing I did as a balance tester xD

By balancing, I meant offering suggestions to the actual balancers on what needs to be balanced.

Even if I could just do 1-4th gen, I still don't know enough about competitive battling yet to justify even trying to apply. Unless everything comes rushing back to me and I can magically learn all the things I would need to know before the testers are selected, I'll just have to wait.

Wow fuzzy, you're still at this? How many entries have you done so far?

Great work, as always. I can't really think of anything to criticize.

I've got a question. How do you give karma to someone? I don't see any kind of karma button anywhere.

I would apply again (and actually, you know, balance pokemon), but I'm not familiar with the 5th and 6th gen pokemon. I didn't get into White much, and I don't have a 3ds to play X or Y on. I actually only know of three pokemon from the 6th generation, and those are the starters. On top of that, I've forgotten nearly everything that I had learned about competitive battling for the 4th gen, so I'm useless now. Maybe I'll get into competitive battling again, I need something to learn that involves strategy again anyway. I might be capable of balancing by the time you recruit testers again.

Yeah, again, the kindergarten thing was just a random comment about the length of the story; it was not intended as an insult. My actual opinions were below that.

Oh well. I suppose I've derailed the thread enough, I'll just leave now.

EDIT: Also, I wasn't seriously asking how to ensure that your tone isn't negative, I was just using that to further explain the point I was trying to make.

Agreed, timezones are a pain, but with only 2 people needed for the battle / event it shouldn't be to hard actually. Now getting on up to 3+ people on at the same time gets to be a real big pain. So those larger battles and events would have to be done the chapter way you were talking about.

I know, I was there when it happened. I was on IRC before you don't forget. :P
And yes this was long before PO and the balance testers. I was merely saying what I suggested, never was attempted. Only live RPs were attempted.

On another note
Hopefully this has everything cleared up. I probably won't be posting in this thread again as I don't really care for RPs. xD Just had that thought and wanted to give it to foodonfloor.
I didn't plan on posting this many times I just had to clear up some things.
I know you were on IRC before :P

I do remember at least one RP where they would meet up every so often on their own irc channel to discuss and plan stuff, but I'm not sure if they did any actual RPing on IRC. I can't remember for sure.

I honestly don't see how I was being rude :|

Okay, maybe the kindergarten thing was unnecessary, but I didn't mean it as an insult. That was just a comment about the length, it didn't really have much to do with what I thought of the quality of the story. That's why I gave my opinions and criticisms below that.

It may seem like my post has a negative tone, but that's not how I intended it. When I give criticism, I get straight to the point. Sugar-coating my opinions is a waste of my time, and a waste of the other person's time.

The tone is what you interpret it as, unless the poster let's you know what they intended it to be. As a general rule, if I see a post that seems like it's meant to have a negative tone, I read over it a few more times to make sure I'm interpreting it correctly. It's important to do this on the internet, since there's no body language or tone of voice to go off of. If I'm still not sure, I simply take a neutral approach. By neutral, I mean that I disregard the "tone" entirely. So if I'm being criticized on something, I just look at the criticism on a basic level and move on. For example, if somebody says that I have to work on my spelling, but they say it in a way that seems like they may be trying to be insulting, I just forget about anything other than "You should work on your spelling."

I probably did too much explaining there, but I want to make sure this doesn't turn into one of those threads that goes on for three pages where everyone is trying to explain exactly what they meant.

Quote
Just please be a bit more careful on how you talk to others, and always check over what you wrote before you post to ensure that your tone isn't insulting or aggressive.
But how do you ensure that? A comment can be interpreted in too many different ways. For example, I could interpret the comment as an honest request, or I could interpret it as a comment intended to offend me. The latter interpretation is extreme, but I have met people that I could actually see interpreting it that way.

Cincy can choose to listen to my criticism or ignore it if she feels that I'm wrong, or if she feels like she's being insulted. This shouldn't be a big deal. I offered my opinion, but I'm just some random guy on the internet that can easily be ignored.

I have never seen what I said attempted, and thats coming from someone who was logged in on IRC and PO 24/7. Though I did see the live RP come and go 2 or 3 times.
Though what I was suggesting isn't a full live RP only the battle / event. So it can get done and move on with the RP since that seems to be a big problem with people.
No one wants to wait 2+ days for a battle to end so they can continue, much less 2 weeks.

A simple time frame for the individuals that are participating in the event / battle to meet on PO / IRC / skype should suffice.
The people who tried it made their own IRC channels. I'm talking way back though; this was before the balance server was made accessible to everyone, and maybe even before the first group of balance testers was selected. It was quite a long time ago.

I either misread or misunderstood your post. I thought you were talking about everyone in the RP getting on IRC together for bigger events in the RP or something like that. If it's just one or two people, that's a way to do it.

I think most RP forums prefer that you do co-posts for fights and stuff. It's much easier, because you just RP back and forth in messages, adding on to the post each time you write. You tend to end up with a pretty big post, and then one of the players posts it. It's a slower process than doing it on IRC though.

I don't RP, I used two when I was around 18, but that's long before PU.

Anyway, for the whole "Events take 2 days to 2 weeks" problem. Why don't y'all make up a schedule for the people partaking in the event and have them do it "live" on PO / skype / IRC and then save the log and post it in the RP thread it goes to. That would let them do the battle / event a lot faster and let the RP move on.

Just my 2 cents. Use it or leave it.
I think that's been attempted before, and we've even had people try to do live RPs on IRC, but it just doesn't seem to work. Maybe if you had enough dedicated people. It wouldn't work for all RPs though, as it largely depends on the style of the RP and the players. Some people like to come up with shorter posts on the spot, and some people like to make long posts that flow really well and are really detailed, which can take 1 - 3 days (or longer) depending on how ambitious and skilled the writer is.

I'll probably read over the rest of this stuff tomorrow so I'll have an easier time thinking and comprehending, but there are a few things I'll mention now.

The thing with the "The GM's Rule is Law" rule, is that you have to depend on the mods of the RP forum to watch and step in if things get out of hand, or to investigate if they're getting complaints. Right now, the only active mod of the RP section is Jerry, and he's busy, so he can't handle it all himself. I think we need to de-mod the inactive mods, and then find some people who are willing and capable of moderating the RP section. If we have enough mods, that should eliminate any of the issues you guys mentioned.

I'm still not entirely sure about the verification thing, but if it's just a 400 word story I guess it couldn't hurt.
