Completed Reports / #260 - Swampert
« on: April 03, 2011, 04:02:44 PM »
Name: Swampert
Number: 260
Type: Water/Ground

Abilities: Torrent, Damp

Base Stats: 100 / 110 / 90 / 85 / 90 / 60

Level Up Move Edits:
None

Move Tutor Move Edits:
Its current learnable Gen V TMs
Its current learnable Gen V Tutor Moves
Focus Punch
Aqua Tail
Earth Power
Endeavor
Headbutt
Ice Punch
Outrage
Low Kick
Superpower

Egg Move Edits:
None

Example Set
Old But Good @ Leftovers
248 HP / 216 Def / 44 SpD
Damp/Torrent, Relaxed
~ Surf / Scald
~ Earthquake
~ Ice Beam
~ Roar / Protect

Explanation of Set
Pretty much by the book Swampert. This guy is defensively great - and with EQ, Ice Beam and Surf, he can hit everything pretty damn hard. Just switch him in on a non-grass attack, and watch how things turn out.
The main difference generation V brings to this set is Scald - which can be be used over Surf for less power, but it has a chance to burn - thwarting physical attackers.

Example Set 2
Subpunch? @ Leftovers
252 HP, 76 Atk, 180 Def
Damp, Impish
~ Substitute
~ Focus Punch
~ Ice Punch
~ Earthquake

Explanation of Set
This one's a lot of fun. Switch in on a resisted move from a Poke you can wall all day with your defensive investment, forcing them to switch out. Set up your Sub, and just wail away with whatever you can. If your sub is going to go down, make another.

In-Forum Games / [Pending] Pokemon Ghost Ship: A PokeRP Game
« on: October 10, 2010, 09:26:55 AM »
Leo Edit: By Joining this "RP", You agree that you give other players permission to kill you.

That, and I think the level of Blood/Gore needs to be cut.

way too intense, Im INTO horror movies and this creeps me out.

Premise and Rules
You are on a ship. You're a serial killer, with a terrible self-control issue, and an itchy blogging finger. The premise of the game is that in each post, you are going to kill someone on the ship, and each time, you also get killed by the murderer in the post above you.

This means that in each post, you role play a different murderer, with a different Pokemon of choice, and hopefully, a different personality and feel. And then you die.

Your posts must be in first person, and contain your name, sex and a reason as to why you're on the boat.
You must kill someone in your psot in a Pokemon related manner.
You must then be killed off by the previous poster's character, in the method they wrote about.

Profanity is accepted,
Blood and Guts is encouraged,
Hilarity is rewarded.
Let's go. I'll start us off.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I pushed myself off the floor, the Murphy family of Fallarbor were never known for their sea legs -  and Thomas was no exception. Though, Thomas Murphy has always been known for other reasons. The assassination of the Mayor of Pallet? Maybe. The slaughter of a small troupe of Rockets in the Ilex Forest? Probably. The maiming of Mt Silvers Joy? Probably not... nobody to was around to see it, but my short mental fuse was alight - and I need blood.
I wretched for the last time before I indulged in my favourite sport... "Catch a Carp, Slap a Carp". The premise is simple.
1. Go out to the deck.
2. Get out my Old Rod.
3. Catch a Carp.
4. Brain someone with said Carp.
Seriously, it's the only reason I'd ever catch a ship anywhere.

---

After a good hour of fishing, I finally got a decent bite. "What? An hour for a Magikarp?" you ask, "Surely you jest". I do not. You see, the Magikarp has to stay concious for the whole ordeal - if it faints - it goes limp, if it goes limp - the amount of force you need to put into your clubbing skyrockets. And, when you're focusing enough of your attention on not vomiting all into your victim's hair - slapping effort is dangerous effort.

I held the 'karp triumphant - and ball'd it for easy storage. Now I needed to seek my mark.
Or, maybe my mark could stumble upon me...
I went down to the living areas, and sought out an empty room. The funny thing about ships? Everyone leaves their rooms unlocked. It's like the different setting begs different behaviour.
This person will pay for their stupidity.

I hid under the bed.
God bless single bedrooms.

---

I lied in wait.
Soon enough, a single person entered the room and laid on the bed.
I waited.
Then, they arose.
I heard the sound of brushing teeth.
More brushing.
More brushing.
The wearing down of enamel.
I got impatient - what was this person? A Goddamn dentist? "Who the chansey brushe---"

...
...

Did I say that out aloud?
Oh yes I did... damn!

My mark yelled - but it was too late.
I drew my Magikarp, who, as expected, stiffened out of sheer pathetic defence mechanisms.
God bless Magikarp.

"Magica..."
-CRUNCH-
Blood sprayed everywhere.
"Magi-"
-CRUNCH-
The victim was unconcious.
"karp karp"
-CRUNCH-
I heard the skull give way.
"karp karp"
-CRUNCH-
Bits of brain covered myself and my club.
"Karp..."

It was done.
Now, I don't know what kind of material Magikarp scales are made of - they're not rock nor steel, but I knew that this passenger was not going to leave the ship unless by body bag.

I stole out of the room, and made a silent dash for my room on the next level - though... something felt odd.
I looked behind me to see a Hypno.
I glared at the Hypno and it glared back ... the room fell silent and cold.

"Hypno... you know what we do to those who lose their way during the night, right?" a female voice said.
Oh Jesus. I only hoped this wasn't who I thought it was.
"I've waited a long time for this Thomas"
crap!

"Now I'll do to you what you did to your last victim."
"Oh haha," I laughed, "Unlikely as I pretty much made his head expl... wait, Hypno can't do that right?"
"We'll see..."

I felt tension in my temples. This was normal when in the presence of a Hypno... but then I started to shake... I felt like vomiting... the tension increased until it was a headsplitting migraine.
Pun totally inte--

-----------------------------------------------------

So, the next person has to write their own post where their character kills someone in a Pokemon related way, then gets killed by my character - and so on, oui oui?

Jobs / How to Apply for a Balance Position.
« on: September 11, 2010, 04:43:01 AM »
Cool.
The balance team needs more members from time to time... but, in order to be accepted for the job, you need to show that you're competent in balancing Pokemon, getting along with the team, and being creative with skills that can be given to Pokemon in their skill trees.

You need the following skills:
Good Mathematical skills.
Great Knowledge of Pokemon Game Mechanics (such as IVs, EVs)
Good Knowledge of Competitive Pokemon

You need to know how to use the following tools:
http://smogon.com
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/
http://users.smogon.com/X-Act/BaseStatsRatings.html
Damage Calculators. We can provide a Variable Base Stat Damage Calc for your application.

So, as a step by step process:
1. Join IRC.
2. Talk a bit. Get to know Raikt and myself a bit. As Kamaran has been helping us quite a lot lately, knowing him is also helpful. Let us know that you're interested in balance.
3. We often have balance discussions right in the main chat - one of the many bonuses of being active in IRC.
4. If you do see a balance discussion, just look at how we operate and justify what changes we make.
5. When you think you're ready, or when Raikt, Kamaran or I suggest it, make a thread.

Now, in this thread you have to show that you can balance a Pokemon, and give it creative skills.

Pick a Pokemon. Any Pokemon that you feel like you know fairly well.
Study it pretty hard, work out what tier it is in competitive play. Should it go up or down?
The PU team currently tries to balance for high UU tier.

Work out the issues surrounding your Pokemon. Is it too easily countered? Is it too fast? Is it very limited in the roles it can perform? Are its Base Stats terrible?
Work out a solution.

Fill out the following form:
Code: [Select]
Pokemon: Pokemon Name
Type: Pokemon Type
Current Tier: Where the Pokemon currently places in competitive play.
Reasons for this placement: Tell us why the Pokemon is where it is, in a few short sentences - like "Infernape is in OU for its Mixed Wallbreaking abilities, with its high Speed, Attack and SpA stats. Its ability to OHKO a Blissey and many Steel Walls with Close Combat is a high sought-after ability.
Stealth Rock Removal: How much is this Pokemon affected by the removal of Stealth Rock from Pokemon Universe? Stealth Rock has been the most important move in the game so far, and so, as we are removing it, you need to factor this into your balance. For example, Charizard is NU because he loses 1/2 his health if he switches into SR. Removing it makes him OU, you he doesn't need buffs.

Buff or Nerf? Tell us whether you plan to buff or nerf the Pokemon. Single word.
Explain the Change: Is it a change to stats? To abilities? To Movesets? Explain it in a sentence or two.

Old Stats:
HP:
Atk:
Def:
SpA:
SpD:
Spe:

Stat Related Damage Calculations:
Yes, you need these.
For an attacker, show what damage it currently does to common walls such as Slowbro, Weezing, Milotic, Chansey etc. with its most common attacks.
For a wall, show how much damage your average attacker like Blaziken, Nidoking, Venusaur, Ambipom, etc. will do to it.
Only test meaningful attacks, for example, no-one cares how much damage Charizard's Flamethrower does against Blastoise, as he will likely use Thunderpunch or HP Electric/Grass, or, another neutral move against it.

Proposed Stats:
HP: Also add the difference in, as in,
Atk: if you have Charizard's Base 100 Speed
Def: and you want to give him 105, make it
SpA: 105 (+5)
SpD: Likewise, if you had Blaziken's Base 80 Speed, and you subtracted 20,
Spe: 60 (-20)

Reasons for Stat Changes:
HP: Here you explain why exactly you changed the stats, in specific terms.
Atk:
Def:
SpA:
SpD:
Spe:

Stat Related Damage Calculations:
Yes, you need these too.
With the Pokemon that you tested against above, show what has changed with your new stats.

Movepool Changes + Reasons
If you changed the movepool, explain why here. For example, for Flareon:
+ Flare Blitz: Flareon has great attack, but a terrible Special-Oriented movepool that cannot take advantage of it at all. I added Flare Blitz to replace Fire Fang as its Primary Attack Move.

Or, in the case of removing abilities - for Machamp:
- Vacuum Wave: Machamp us designed to be a slower powerhouse - and so this move makes him extremely difficult to counter as even if you do outspeed his 100% Accuracy Dynamic Punches, he can easily use this move to threaten and deal high damage to you.

Ability Changes + Reasons
Does the Pokemon have an ability that is purely detrimental? Or perhaps an ability would synergise extremely well with a Pokemon, but it does not have it? In Pokemon Universe, Pokemon can have 3 abilities to choose from. If you think your Pokemon needs a different ability, post it here. For example, for Muk:

Water Absorb: I feel that Muk is a great Special Wall, but, it would be even better and more usable with a way to effectively heal itself, and check Bulky Waters in the process.

5 Interesting Skills that could be given to the Pokemon
I'm not sure if everyone is aware, but in PU Pokemon get skill trees like in World or Warcraft, or Borderlands.
An example is here:
http://pokemon-universe.com/index.php/topic,14.msg15353.html#msg15353

Skills can be applied to the Pokemon in general, or its moves, its abilities, etc.
To show how creative you can be, we want 5 Skills that are interesting, and could be applied to the Pokemon you are balancing.
These skills must be balanced and must work with the Pokemon to create a refreshing, strong and unique playstyle.

Fill this out for your application, we'll judge it, and hopefully it'll all check out!

Good luck!

Fan Fiction & Writing / Escape Rope!
« on: March 17, 2010, 10:46:41 PM »
Every time someone uses an Escape Rope it should trigger a music video for them.
The music video should have the following song (to the tune of the Pokemon Theme Song).

I want to get, out of this cave,
As I've run out of repels.
I can't walk, I'm not that brave,
It feels like I'm in hell.

I've been spelunking, in this cave,
Searching far and wide,
For the Escape Rope, I understand
Must be here inside.

Escape Rope!
It's you and me,
I know it's our destiny
Escape Rope!
Ooh, you're my best friend
In a cave I must ascend!

Escape Rope!
A knot so true,
Your tension will pull me through
You tug me and I'll tug you
Escape Rope!
Gotta tug 'em all!

Every cavern along the way
With courage I will face
One hundred Zubats, never rare
And most at level 8.

Spin with me, the time is right
There's no better team
Arm in rope we'll flee the fight.
You're always in my dreams.

Escape Rope!
It's you and me,
I know it's our destiny
Escape Rope!
Ooh, you're my best friend
In a cave I must ascend!

Escape Rope!
A knot so true,
Your tension will pull me through
You tug me and I'll tug you
Escape Rope!
Gotta tug 'em all!

Fan Fiction & Writing / A Man's Hitmonlee. [WARNING ADULT LANGUAGE]
« on: March 09, 2010, 12:48:18 PM »
*a Spearow is seen pecking at the ground, when a large foot slowly slides underneath it, and kicks it into the air. A follow up aerial kick from a Hitmonlee sends the Spearow flying horizontally at an alarming speed.

The camera cuts to an odd looking trainer holding his arm out holding a Pokeball. The Spearow slams right into the button on the ball, which starts the capture process.
The trainer, looking pleased, clutches the ball tightly, fighting the struggles of the captures Spearow.*

*The same scene happens with a Pidgey,  and then a Rattata*

"Good work Hitmonlee.. oh... oh! Look! A Dunsparce! On the road to Pallet? How strange..." the odd trainer exclaims.
"Well, time for the combo. Let's get it."

*The Hitmonlee kicks the Dunsparce up into the air, but, as it does the follow up kick, its foot sets aflame - sending the Dunsparce flying at such a ridiculous speed that it is KO'd upon contact with the Pokeball - also sending the trainer staggering backwards from the force.*

"What the fuuuccckk, dude? Too much!"
*Hitmonlee makes sounds of annoyance*
"No, don't give me that, just too much dude, too much. You know, you can pull that on Lance's Dragonite and crap but man, a Dunsparce? Come on..."

"Now what are we going to do with this?" the trainer asks, as he holds up the fainted Dunsparce.
*Hitmonlee shrugs, but starts to get a gleam in its eye - it starts to giggle*
"Oh... hehehehe... I think I know what you're thinking..."

---- Later at the Pokemon Centre ---------------

Trainer: "Look out! Coming through! We have an emergency!"
The trainer runs to the front bench.
Trainer: *crying very unconvincingly* "Please, you've got to help my poor Dunsparce! It... it... just totally fainted!"
Nurse: "Uhhh... shouldn't it be in a Pokeball?"
Trainer: *thinking* "It... it would be except you seee..."
The trainer and Hitmonlee look to each other.
Trainer: "Man it totally jammed. Totally... jammed. Like... you know?"
Nurse: *suspicious* "Okay... then... just give it to me..."
Trainer: "Oh, just wondering, will my Pokemon be totally healed?"
Nurse: *smiling* "Of course! Your Pokemon will be fine in no time!"
Trainer: *walking away* "Damn..."
The Nurse looks puzzled in the background.

*The trainer and his Hitmonlee sit in the waiting room*

Trainer: "So like... you know... that was a pretty powerful kick... you know..."
"Like... Dunsparces aren't that light... you... know... you could try to..."
*Hitmonlee shakes it head in an obvious "No." signal*
"Nah but... man..."
*No.*
"I've always wanted to go to Fuschia and well, Snorl--"
*No.*
"Oh well you don't have to give me that, I'm just saying... you know?"
*Hitmonlee rolls its eyes*
"I'm just saying, like, they're not *that* heavy..."
*Hitmonlee shakes its head, clenching its fists in frustration.*

"Like, PokeFlutes are pretty expensi--"
*Hitmonlee makes argumentative noises*
"No, no way am I getting involved in that."
*Why?*
"No. Hey. You know how I feel about fuucking ghostly Marow-- and.. yeah"
*...*
"Well look, you won't be able to touch it. And like, Raichu definitely won't be able to touch-- and... that thing has Team Rocket written all over it you know?"
*...*
"Nah thats totally their kind of thing. Kidnapping old men and all that."
*...*
"And like, you know, that's the police's work. And you know they don't like vigilantes."
*Oh I'm sure they'd--*
"No, no. Did you hear what happened to that fuucking 10 year old kid? The fuucking death sent--"

The loudspeaker chimes "Dunsparce for Tim and ...Makuhita?"

"-- that's what."

*Hitmonlee glares*
"Hey, no, don't you give me that look! You're a wanted Pokemon in like, 5 fuucking cities, we can't use your real species!"
*Hitmonlee gives a very hushed "Don't go there" action*
"Hey I'm not bringing it up, I'm just saying... but... dude... with a Skitty? Come on..."
*Hitmonlee kicks the trainer in the shins*

*Cut to the emergency room, Dunsparce is still recovering*

"Hey doc, I thought you said it would be A-OK."
"Well, the Dunsparce took quite a beating, it's still a little hurt"
*The doctor turns away to prepare medication, while the trainer's face lights up and the trainer and his Hitmonlee exchange high fives*
"Now, you'll need to administer a couple of potions over the next couple of hours..."
*The trainer quickly captures the Dunsparce, and the duo climb out of the open window*
"So all you need to do is just...."

"Oh what the fuuck?"

New Trainers / Welcome / A wild Pidgey appears!
« on: February 05, 2010, 07:49:35 AM »
Hey. I kinda dived right into suggestions and IRC, but I guess I'll make an into thread...

I'm Level 5 Pidgey, real name Zanda - a college student 18 years of age from Australia.
I attend the Academy of Interactive Entertainment where I am in my first year of Professional Game Development - Programming Major.
I plan to enter the game industry through programming, but I aim to be a designer rather than a programmer.

Anyway, I have contributed a lot to other game projects, most notably my revision of the Dead Ringer in Team Fortress 2 (a build currently still functioning in game), and my total redesign of the flagging system in the European MMO Darkfall Online.
I also won a national game design competition called 'Gameface' - with my entry 'The Undeadables'.

I want to help this project mainly through attacking Pokemon's large content redundancy, and I have a range of methods to attempt. I'm still trying to work out what will be most effective.
Right now I'm creating a program that will effectively compare Pokemon's base stats as derived stats, that can help us individually balance various pokes.

Anyway, if you want to see some of my work:
http://zandagamedesign.blogspot.com/
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YL294g3svr0

I hope you like it :D

Anyway, I'll just rattle off some facts:
Favourite Films:
No Country for Old Men
28 Days/Weeks Later
Children of Men
Tekkon Kinkreet
Blood Simple.
Reservoir Dogs
Wall-E, Ratatouille, Up, The Incredibles
Sin City
Zombieland
District 9
Inglourious Basterds
Up In the Air

TV Shows:
Heroes
Burn Notice
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Dexter

Music:
The Protomen
Les Miserables
Ayreon
Guilt Machine
Cog
Mindless Self Indulgence
65daysofstatic
Deftones

Games:
Team Fortress 2
Pokemon Snap
Pokemon R/B/Y/G/S/C
Golden Sun 1, 2
Pikmin 2
Zack and Wiki
Tales of Symphonia
Borderlands
Cloud
World of Goo
The World Ends With You
Okami
Braid
Harvest Moon

Opinions of Pokemon:
I'm a giant fan of the first 2 generations, and I love them to bits - but I am less than impressed by the newer games. In fact, I'm trading all my newer games for the remakes of the older ones.
I believe a great flaw in Pokemon is its 80% content redundancy - and I aim to try and fix that.
I also loved the immersion of Pokemon Snap (seeing a world full of wild Pokemon) - and I want to see more of that in future Pokemon games. I think the turn-based game play might be getting a little stale, so a more immersive environment should be encouraged.
