Anime & Movies / Gintama
« on: May 30, 2011, 08:27:14 AM »
I noticed there was no thread about said Anime Gintama, and since it's not well known, in my opinion, I created this thread to talk about it.

Gintama (Silver Soul) is a manga and anime series by Sorachi Hideaki, with the anime currently above 200 episode counts. It is a sort of comedy/science-fiction/action based story, with mainly making fun of society among other things (including other manga/anime). This type of comedy might not be appealing to all, but I personally love it. Many times it requires background knowledge (about Japan, manga, etc.) to understand the jokes they make, and other times it's just really random. Well actually it is always random.

It is basically about a silver, perm haired samurai during the Edo era with a twist: Aliens invade. So now we have an Edo era/present day Japan mix, with Aliens roaming around, and space travel now being a reality. His name is taken from a Japanese legend Sakata Kintoki, who had superhuman strength as a child.

So Gintoki Sakata works as a Jack-of-all-trades (Yorozuya) and is about how he and the others he gets to befriend deal with life in this invaded Japan.

 - Despite it's comedy genre, it tends to get into deep, serious thoughts every now and then, and when it's an actual action scene not meant for comedy, it's really awesome.

Well it's not dubbed in English or any other languages that I know of, but I only like a few Anime dubs anyway: most of them tend to get the characters messed up and there are only a few good ones out there. Anyways, it might be for the fact that the numerous jokes that go around Gintama wouldn't be able to translate too well, and a lot of people might not get it. That might be the reason why not many people like it or ever watched it.

Well if you decide to give it a go: http://www.animefreak.tv/watch/gintama-english-dubbed-online-free

PS: Gintama means Silver Soul, but sometimes a pun is made: Kintama (means Testicles)
PSS: In the Anime, the story starts from episode 3. Episodes 1-2 are a sort of trailer, and they are already in the middle of the story, with many characters known. (Just pointing it out, if you want to watch it from the beginning start with episode 3, and later return for 1-2. They aren't canon anyway)
                                                              Cheers, Genbor

Fan Fiction & Writing / Balrok Chronicles
« on: April 16, 2011, 08:38:39 PM »
A/N:  I decided to start a story. It’s not really about Pokémon but I hope you guys will enjoy it. I think I’ll do weekly updates on it If you guys like it enough, if not than that’s that. It’s just a fun story I had in my mind for a while now (around two days or so) and decided to write it and post it. (Could you please send me your reviews in Private Messages so that I could continue the story in this thread without interruption between the posts; thanks.
To summarize the story: It’s about a guy named Elmith. In the Era of Prosperity, Enchanters are completely forgotten and when someone thinks of magic, they think of Elementalists who manipulate their respective elements. The story takes place in the Kingdom of Balrok.
 So anyways, here it is:

Prologue

The streets of Ündelan were busy with people bustling about their business. It was the time of the Festivities, where they were celebrating the successful growing of crops. This was the busiest time of the year for Ündelan, since people from all over Balrok visited the small town to enjoy themselves. The usually peaceful little town always went to extremes when it came to enjoying themselves, so they didn’t mind spending coins on anything during these times. This also attracted the performers and merchants, since it was a chance to gain good fortune from the festive locals and guests.

The biggest crowd was gathered around a young man with long brown hair.  He wore a brown coat, green shirt and khaki pants, all of which had been woven from some kind of plants. His feet were bare, even though the weather wasn’t the warmest.  At the moment, he was drawing a some figures into a circle he made on the ground, and seemed to concentrate hard on what he was doing as sweat dripped from his forehead. His bent back straightened after which the audience that was happily chattering with each other now quieted down, and begun to watch in anticipation.

The young man stepped away from the circle, and pointed at it with a staff that was bent to what resembled a straight hook at the end. As soon as he did that, the circle begun glowing in a light blue color, which was followed by a man’s gasp. Elmith smiled and beckoned the man to emerge from the crowd and stand next to the circle. What was in the circle was the cause of the commotion. There was the same man as the one standing next to him exactly mimicking his movements, thus looking completely flabbergasted.

“This,” started Elmith his explanation, “is a complex creation of natural factors. It allows me to make a perfect replica of anything I imagine. Well, perfect to the point of speaking that is.”
This performance’s most valuable audience proved to be the children gathered at the front of the crowd, who were laughing hard. A girl shyly tugged Elmith’s sleeves and pointed at the replica, and at herself. Elmith laughed and pointed his staff at the circle again. This time a replica of the girl was made, who merrily danced around her other self. The only fault in it was that although it copied movement and shape perfectly, it did not however leave the circle.

Elmith then created many more replicas from the crowd, and ended his performance by creating an Oak tree, after which he sat down under it, took out a flute, and started to play songs on it. People applauded and cheered, and showed their appreciation by throwing a few coins into the hat that was placed on the floor.

As the crowd dispersed, Elmith got up, emptied the now full hat into his purse, and walked into the Festivities to enjoy himself, as well as to eat, since it’s been a while since he ate a decent meal.
There were many more interesting performers present at the Festivities. Some were spouting flames with their breath, others were swallowing swords, and pulling them out without any injury to themselves. Elmith wasn’t interested in them. He walked through the streets full of merchants shouting about prices for their goods, and special offers. One particular thing did catch Elmith’s eye, but after closer inspection, the little carving proved to be unimpressive.

Leaving the noise of the streets, he entered an Inn and ordered some food. The Innkeeper seemed skeptical at first, but after he gave a nudge to his purse the Innkeeper smiled. It seemed he found the clicking of the coins satisfactory and lead Elmith to a secluded table at the corner. The dish that was brought for Elmith contained slices of beef, coated in honey and some potatoes along with vegetables. Elmith found the honey mixed beef strange at first but soon grow to like the taste.

He stayed at the table for a while, ordering a mug of ale while watching the ever growing number of people. After he got tired of laughing at the drunkards arguing and brawling, he bought a room for the night from the Innkeeper, who got one of his barmaids to show him the way. He bid the barmaid good night and slipped a coin into her hands, after which he closed the door and got to work on the door. He drew a circle on it along with some runes, which started to glow as soon as he was finished, this time a dark blue color. As soon as it was done he got out of his clothes, and lay down on the bed to rest.

Ideas & Suggestions / Tutoring Trainers
« on: April 14, 2011, 05:23:01 PM »
I apologize if a similar or the same topic has been made already, but I seem to have an intense war going on with the Search function.  >:(

 A few ideas/suggestions:

1.) In many games what I searched for but never found, was an option to "tutor" other players. This would mean that if I was particularly good at something, I could help him gain experience by showing him how to do it.
This could be accomplished by allowing other players to see your battles you have with your Pokémon; which would give them a slight bonus in experience gain.
To give an example: A higher level trainer's fight could be watch by other people, whoever watches the fight could gain the slight experience gain from watching it. The higher the trainer level, the higher the experience gain. (This, of course, would only give the Trainer experience and not his Pokémon)
To back this up, even in game sometimes there are scenes where others show you how to catch a Pokémon. This increases your knowledge of how to catch one properly and therefore your trainer should get a slight bonus.
Another argument would be that if you have the same Pokémon as the higher level trainer fighting, you could learn a few tricks from how he uses his Pokémon.

To exploit this idea further, in a 2v2 battle, the trainer's (along with the Pokémon) could "learn" from each other - since each person has different techniques - and therefore enhance their overall experience they gain. I would very originally call it a Party boost. (if there is a Join Party/Group action)

To go back to how to view a fight, there could be some kind of object pinned to the ground indicating a fight. (a flag, sword stuck in the ground, etc) This object would have a Watch Fight, option, with which you would do just that.

This would also make Competitions fun for others - and not just wait for announcements to know what happened -  and be there participating in the fight as a Spectator.
This might cause some lag issues but it sounds fun for me.

2.) Another idea I have is regarding the HMs and TMs.
It would still be nice to have them around, but since the TM is a use-once-only move, it could have a little twist in it.
To elaborate on the "twist", here's an example:
You learn an HM or TM move. The TM move naturally disappears with the use, but after a number of times used, (would have to be a pretty high number to make this worth it) the trainer would learn the move itself. So now he wouldn't need to have that TM/HM in his bag anymore to teach a Pokémon. Since he used it so many times he now knows exactly how to teach the Pokémon the move. So he could teach moves to his, or other trainers' Pokémon without having the HM, TM moves in his inventory. (This could also be classified as an achievement?)

Anyways, these are just my thoughts. They don't seem to blown-out-of-proportion ideas, so it might be worth to think about it. So tell me what you guys think.
                                                                                              Cheers, Genbor

PS: Since I wanna contribute something to the game, and since I realized I am horrible at programming, pixel art, or anything else; I came to the conclusion of trying to "contribute" with ideas and suggestions. That might include Quests if that's still open for people to write and suggest.

PSS: "Contributing" ideas
         change "Contributing to "Annoying"
And you have "Annoying" ideas  8)
- So tell me when I should stop bugging you with them -

New Trainers / Welcome / Genbor says: Hi!
« on: April 12, 2011, 08:30:45 PM »
Like my title suggests, I am here to officially say hi to the Pokémon Universe. I've been registered for a few days now and have been looking at topics occasionally (meaning whenever I had time) but haven't really seen this option yet.
Although not sure what kind of introduction should I be doing I'll just do it the way I like. (I read FAQ, and the Forum Etiquette + Regulations so hopefully I don't cross them)

 Name: Viktor
Age: 18              (You can probably find this info on my profile, if not I'll update it soon)
 Country: Hungary

Not sure how the character creation will go, but if I can choose a name it will be Genbor.(surprise surprise)
Starting and forever used Pokémon: Bulbasaur (well, his evolved forms anyways)
My Trainer Philosophy is to catch the Pokémon I like and battle with them till we win. -All you need is guts!-

Anyways I love the games, and love what you are doing here. Not sure how the game will look like in its final form but so far what I have read about it I'm enchanted by the PokéUniverse. This game would be a dream come true, since I always wanted to battle others with my Pokémon when I used to play, but never had a cable or the same game. Although I haven't played for a while now (last Pokémon Game i played was the Crystal version) after i stumbled upon this website the old passion for the game revived.

Since I haven't been up-to-date with the games, I don't quite understand these newer options like breeding (if it was available in Crystal than I have the excuse of relying on my guts and just beat the game with brawl) so I would like to ask help in these cases. (starting from the new options after Crystal) If you have time and like to help newbies out a tutorial or links of them would be greatly appreciated.
I read on the forums about the IV system - a predetermined x-value for a Pokémon that boosts stuff and is unchangeable (if I understood it right) - and would like to ask if starting Pokémon that are the same would have the same stats including IV (not even sure if I'm using it in a proper way) or it's determined by luck? - ex: starting Bulbasuar good IV stats for one guy and starting Bulbasaur bad IV stats for another-

Anyways I am looking forward to the game, and would like to say keep up what you're doing. If this website managed to pull me back into the Pokémon Universe, then I'm sure it will attract others like me as well.
 So with regards,
Cheers, Genbor/Viktor (whichever you like better)

PS: Forgot to add one thing.
I fell for the Aprils Fools prank, and it made me cry I was laughing so hard. Thanks for that.
