You could try out GIMP. I think it's as good as photoshop in terms of tools but it's free! :D

I like using Paint.NET, but that's mostly for photo editing. I don't know how well it would work for making a sprite from scratch.

Yeah, GIMP is mainly for photoediting too though :-[

 I had a weird dream last night... I was playing PU, and I was facing the champion. I only had my Typhlosion. It had full health and beat the crap out of all of the champions pokemon. Then he threw out his last pokemon. It was a level 100 Suicune and it took my Typhlosion down in one hit. Then I lost all of my money, pokemon, and badges. I had to start the game over, and I had to get a level 1 Magikarp since there were no more starters. It had an everstone attached to it, but I couldn't take it off of him. It was really weird...

I had a dream.  I was the champion and someone challenged me with a pumped up Typhlosion.  I decided to Action Replay a level 100 Suicune with 999 stats and defeated him.  Fearing he would challenge me again and be the victor, I took all of his possessions away and made him start over at his hometown.  I stole all of the Professors Pokemon but left a Magikarp with an Everstone attached to it.  Best.  Dream.  Ever.
