Oh, it was a tumblr reference? I never saw anything about 'liking' shoelaces... I see many posts of Adventure time, or MLP, or HomeStuck however (and of course, Pokemon since most the people I know there are connected to Pokemon somehow). And few other things.

It's an identification method. You tell someone you like their shoelaces, and if they're on tumblr (and actually know the reply...) they'll react. Havoc and Meowth did it on the previous page, see?

I didn't know the shoes/aliens one. I just knew the shoelaces one because girlofthebluebox, who I went to middle school with, has a friend who's babysitter is a Tumblrian, and she taught me that one while I was waiting to pick girlofthebluebox up. Now I have to remember both of them...
