We are going to add several tournaments so you won't get bored.

One of them is the Pokémon league.

Please notice that the Pokemon-Universe tournaments is not like in the regular games. Here you battle real players from all over the world to become the best - and only the best will win.

I will become the best PU'ler >_>
Tournaments would be very interesting. Do you want to programm it in the game, or is it posted in the forum and then you give the winner the prize?

Time will tell. It's not something we want to have implemented in the beta to we're not actively discussing it in the team.

All minigames will be found in the arcade.

I will not say which games you'll see, but most likely, will many of the already known games be avaible.

Excellent idea. Also to add on, the same pokemon can't be entered in twice.

I actually don't see anything wrong with them being entered more than once.

Well, if there are several wobbuffets with counter/mirror coat/encore/destiny bond combo is simply an insane thought! ... isn't it?  :-[

As long as theydon't have Leftovers, they should be able to be used.

Its called a strategy. Find a way to counter it.

How many tournaments are you guys plannin to host weekly or monthly?

There is a huge difference between strategy and repetitive noobiness.

This isnt some Pokemon GBA game. Its a MMO. featuring all 1.500 Pokes. You play the game to win; not annoy the crap (is that a forbidden word) out of your opponent.

"Noobiness" or not, it's still a strategy. Like the saying goes....Why change something when it works? Keep doin it until someone finds a way to counter you.

In Tournaments, are there going to be restrictions? Like item restrictions and such.

Post by: Jerry on January 21, 2010, 05:27:00 PM
It's a good idea... perhaps there can be different tournaments with different restrictions, and one without any. It'll be similar to multiplayer battle (wireless) in the current DPPt and HGSS games.

Well, professional strategy requires long, long training and lots of time. Even getting a pokemon with the right trait needs a long time if you don't have luck.

As said before, different kinds of tournaments would be good.
So I would suggest to make some tourneys based on tiers. Of course that would require more skill and training =/

This is of course if there's a day care/breeding centre (there was a discussion about this but I can't seem to find it)
If not... well then you have a lot of catching to do :P

I was talking about the breeding idea.
Well, it wouldn't be good in a online game. But on the other hand you need it for breeding moves.

I have nothing against nooby combos. If it works, thats great.

I was just pointing out that a "strategy" (to have a team of 6 wobofets or any other noob combo) should belong to that trainer, only. I've noticed that things catch on in MMOs quick and if it prevents players from thinking on their own, it will catch on no doubt. If everyone ends up using the same team in a tournament; it would ruin the game.

I was only suggesting to the PU team to possibly set the tourneys so that no two players, that enters, would have the same team of starting 6 pokemon.

I dont want to go through an entire tournament playing the same 6 pokemon 3-4 times. Thats all I was saying.

Hmm, I won't suggest that, but more that way:

- Check if the trainer has 6 similar pokemon as another trainer
- Check that each pokemon has the same exact moves as the other previously checked trainer.

If both the trainer is 'yes' for both, then (s)he will be asked to modify his/her team. A team of 6 pokemon with different moves means that there is a different strategy, most of the time and it may be a coincidence that two trainers select the same 6 pokemon.

The only problem in there is when the original trainer who subscribes to the tournament gets that message when another 'copy trainer' has already entered. But anyway, a true trainer should be able to come up with a good strategy with any team of pokemon.

Hey I was wondering about something... WHEN the tournaments will take place? I know that members of PU will be spread all over the world, meaning different time zones, some completely different even. How are you going to cope with that? Or will you perhaps make different tournaments associated to different time zones?  ???

Tournaments will be held on each server. So when you play in a tournament it'll be at a normal time.

*It's not likely you go play on a USA server when you're from Europe.

Not at the same time right? Also, have you guys confirmed if we can play on both servers with the same character?

Worldwide tournaments would really be great instead of having one North American and one Europe. Maybe we can have major tournaments worldwide and minor ones just server based. But still have the option of signing up for Europe and American minor tournaments.

No we're not going to allow this, you'll have to create a character for each server you play on.

Will there be a limit to how many characters a player is able to make per server?

You said you'll be having a server in USA and one in Europe (Netherlands), right? That means the closer one to me is Netherlands, and even then, there will be a time difference of about 4 hours. (+4.00 GMT). That will sometimes pose a little problem for me... bah, we'll deal with that surely later on.
Title: Re: Tournaments
Post by: Mr_Dark on February 05, 2010, 10:02:47 PM
Well The Netherlands is +1GMT. But still it's better then the difference we have with the USA.

@ghostman50
We don't know about a character limit yet, but you'll only be able to play with 1 char at the time. Characters can't be switched to other servers tho.

but both those servers will be not normal time for ppl who play from the other side of the world, such as australia :) so timing tournaments at different times might still be something to consider.

also i think tournaments should be totally item free. between tournament rounds you can heal your pokes or swap out some of your pokes.  but during battles its just how you use your pokes, otherwise it can be the person with the most potions etc that wins rather than the better team. maybe a program can be developed that blocks item use.

it might also be good to have type tournaments too, such as bug type tourneys, water tourneys, flying tourneys etc. again a program could be developed that checks validity of team.

If PU makes it so that members in the game, once its up, can create and form tournaments I'm sure more creative ideas than just water, or just electric battling will be requested.

Look, I don't mean to offend but both these ideas have been talked about already. Next time, try using the search bar...

not offended and did use the search bar :) i may just need to expand search parameters next time...will have another search, but this seemed the most appropriate of those i read through.
