Post by: jflorence05 on March 24, 2010, 03:25:19 PM
I'm gonna be building a new PC in the next month or so. Give me your thoughts on the system so far.

PC I currently own:

MOBO: ABIT IP35 Pro LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX Intel Motherboard
PSU: Thermaltake W0106RU 700W ATX Power Supply
GFX: BFG Tech BFGE88512GTOCE GeForce 8800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3
RAM: Kingston HyperX 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400)
CASE: XION Onyx XON-303 Black/Blue Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
OS: Win Vista Ultimate x64

NEW BUILD:

CPU: Intel Core i7-860 Lynnfield 2.8GHz 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1156 95W Quad-Core Processor
MOBO: ASUS Maximus III Formula LGA 1156 Intel P55 ATX Intel Motherboard
RAM: Kingston HyperX 8GB (4 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
GFX: BFG Tech BFGEGTX260MC896OCDE GeForce GTX 260 896MB 448-bit GDDR3
HDD: (2x RAID) - Western Digital Caviar 640GB
PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V
CASE: Antec Twelve Hundred Black Steel ATX Full Tower Computer Case

Any suggestions? Comments? Always appreciated.

My old PC is going to be combined with another PC I have into a dedicated server for hosting private online games etc.

you could probably go with a little bit more power on the processor and two graphics cards if you have the money. 640 gigs of space is alright as long as you're not collecting large amounts of data. You might want to spend a little more and go for between 750-850W on the power supply just to play it safe,  And how do you plan to cool it? other than that looks pretty good.

Unfortunately I can't SLI the Nvidia card as it just isn't in the cards money-wise.

Edit: The processor you may be right on, however I had forgot to mention that the CPU is going to be OC to 3.6 GHz. It has been tested and confirmed to a 3.8 GHz with the cooler I use and pushing the voltage to 1.35 however I don't want to push it to far, so 3.6 GHz will do.

The 640 GB of HDD space is not including my 2 external HDD that are both 500GB each. Those store most of my crap data like movies, photos, music, etc. The primary HDD is only for apps and app-data.

I actually thought the PSU was a 750W, that was a mistake on my end. Thanks for catching that.

The system has 7 fans within the case, plus I mod my GFX card and remove the generic fan it comes with, and replace it with a radiator system & dual attached fans. The CPU is cooled with a massive Zalman I have that keeps the temp extremely low even under extreme conditions. The HDD have a mounted fan under each as well as RAM has module coolers per chip. The machine need not fear the heat.

The SLI note you made before I may be able to accommodate later on down the road, but as for now it just isn't in the cards.

Thanks alot for your input, it's appreciated :)

No problem, and it's good to hear that you know what you're doing! Best of luck, sounds like it'll be a beast like mine ;P

640 hardrive? A slow Pc... Get a 120 one that is fast.... Ok? make it your main.. Use that one to run your Pc and desktop and most the needed files... Then plug in the other and it'll be using the fast one as a runner so you get speed AND space ok? External harddrives too.... You can't get a hardrive with speed and space... You get one with speed ad use that speed on a spaced one (Unless you have a super-computer..)

Get a good SSD harddisk for OS and applications and a normal one for storage. Once you go SSD you'll never want to go back :P

Great operating system choice though. And you just put my explanation into short form :P I just got a new PC and i'm gonna build it after Tuesday once i get my parts in. My old pc's fan ports are blown from too much gaming. :P. But I got a fan ports for your 4-pin plug-ins from my power supply. My new antec looks awesome.. Speaking of that, Get ANTEC, If you're a gamer. Antec is some of the best PCs. May be a little bit expensive, But it's epic.
