Title: Gym Leaders and their pokemon levels
Post by: Jerry on January 22, 2010, 08:09:33 PM
Ok, I was wondering, since the game will not be linear, how are you, designers are going to cope with the gym leaders, concerning their pokemon level.

If the game is non linear, that means that each gym leader will have to be as strong as any other gym leader.

Or, you'll perhaps make the system as being: the gym leaders will have increasing levels, yes, but according to the number of badges you already have.

The latter then triggers a question. If a gym leader becomes stronger, (s)he will have to have more pokemon (not necessarily though), higher level pokemon with perhaps different movesets, perhaps evolved pokemon too.

Therefore, there might be one 'easier' gym leader than any other to start with, or a gym leader who is much tougher than the rest at a given level and is best to challenge earlier, with weaker teams.

Gym leaders will have "fixed" level Pokémon.

With non-linear we mean the world is open so you can go everywhere, even when you just started. Even when everything is open it might not be wise to enter each cave without being prepared, because the begin of the cave might inhabit low level Pokemon but the deeper you go the higher level they get. The same goes for grass.

Oh, okay, you answered more than I expected :D

That means that you are free to go anywhere, but it's up to you to go for the tough regions or follow a path with increasing difficulty...

Ok, got it! Thanks! :)

Yes, but unlike the original games you'll have to find this "path" yourself (there's more then one way which leads to Rome)

Does this mean no world map?

No, this means you'll have to learn where the 'easy' path is and where not to go.

You might know where such and such town is and how to get there, but you don't know which one contains the gym leader with the lower level pokemons.

There will be a mini-map. Which will only show the places you've been.

Well, if we want this game to be more original, why don't we NOT use levels, have to go into tall grass for pokemon, look at the whole screen etc......why don't we just have the ability to see everything but ourselves, you know we can control the pokemon during levels, we can choose to let the pokemon stay out of their pokeballs and there won't be a need for HMs. It can be more like the show in the sense that we can run a gym, we can see pokemon moving and choose whether or not to approach it, and give them the ability to chase us.

An open beta is slated for release this year. Patience.

And yes, you will have to find the correct paths for yourself. It will all be up to the trainer, in the end. Someone who picked, say, Chimchar, might have an easier time running through a grassy area filled with Grass types, but a Water trainer will not. So, they will both have to learn to move around in different paths.

It will make the experience unique and challenging for each individual.

Use the search, all of these have already been discussed. BUT, since I'm such a nice guy I'll give you the answers here and now. Also these are non-negotiable.

Levels: Yes
Pokemon outside of pokeballs: The pokemon at the top of your party follows you around
HMs: No
Run your own gym: No
Battle system: As in the handheld games.

i think the gym leaders should be at their normal low lvls until you beat elite four.
then all gyms and elite four get rematch bonus lvls.
then later, give them all lvl 100s
then after that, give them good EVs, good team (with wall, sweeper, .... of leader's type), items, and maybe even IVs

Ha, I plan on having the Gym Leaders tough in the first place. You will not beat the first Gym Leader the first time you come across him if you don't know what you are doing. Also; there will be no EV's in PU. We have something better planned.

anyway, why not EVs?
too much work?

(hope this isn't against rules) why can't i post on people controlled gym forum

this is good, because i think that ALL the gym leaders should be tough and ALL have high levels

There is no Elite four, read more about the game, by clicking on Game > About to the topmost of the page.
EVs will not be implemented, as said by Raikt, but IVs will be kept (according to what was said last time).

Not too much work, the system is not that good, PU will have a better system so that every pokemon has a chance to stand against any other pokemon.

And, lastly, there will be no player controlled gym. How can you imagine someone to be in charge of a gym 24/7? People also have a life (well, not all, but most) and can't be online forever waiting for challengers.

I'm sorry I didn't know which word to search for, but what exactly do you achieve by beating a gym leader?

That actually sounds pretty cool Mr.Dark. The thing bout higher level pokes deeper in grass and caves that sounds pretty sweet imo.
