High level players in many MMOs will create second characters ("mules", from the animal that spends its whole life carrying stuff for its master). They have the sole purpose of circumventing 1-time quests and storage restrictions. This was brought up in the PokeNests topic, where it was suggested that mules may be used for farming, and I think this is a genuine concern.
Should people be limited to one account per IP? And if there are two or more people playing on the same IP, they have to apply for a second account on the forums? Or do you like the idea of allowing mules (you lazy bums)?

This.

i dont know if its essential to have alts. alts are used for: a)farming b)to storage c)to play with other classes...
a)farming:
because you are not limited to, f.e healing, or supporter, as player, you wont need an alt to 'farm things. you can just pick up offensive pokemons to do so.
b) to storage
i dont know if youre planning to limit your 'storage', wheater its the bank or your PC. if you do. you wuld need an alt. if the storage is unlimited. you wont.
c)to play with other 'classes/races'
there are no classes nor races. you can take the time to make different pokemon teams. but you wont need an alt to do so.
summary:
i dont think thats its needed. limit it to one char / account. and one account / mail.
-
I think you should be able to crate more than 1 account per IP. you never know when a family shares a computer, and more than one person wants to play the game.
I just think you should only be able to log onto 1 account at a time from the same IP.
-
schindle: The whole point of limiting storage is to limit it. Why would we want people to be able to double their storage via artificial means (using mules?). btw mules are not the same as alts, the former is not for serious playing purposes, the latter is. There is no need for alts in PU, as you already said.
Phosphorous:

Agreed.

Putting in a harsh punishment to deter same IP traders wouldnt be a bad idea either.
-
basicly it is the same. how you play your alt is your thing.

as i said. no1 would make a mule to farm things... when you dont have professions! if you have, and every character can have 1, then you need 'mules' or 'alts' to be able to have all professions avaible.
and i dont get what you mean saying The whole point of limiting storage is to limit it. Why would we want people to be able to double their storage via artificial means
sure it is? but why having mules if you dont need the extra storage?
-
You aren't supposed to have more than one or two professions, or unlimited storage. The whole point is that you have to choose. If you want more storage, you will have to buy it at the storage facility, rather than just make a new character for free (which is essentially cheating).
-
ok.
so now i get your point.
supposing: you have bought all storage avaible. like [200] places. what then?
limiting to one profession: ehm. why? you dont want the player to explore the whole content? if you allow only one profession, and one character. that would be weirdo. unless you could relearn the profession. that would mean once you changed, you changed it completely. personly, i think that would really mess up everything.
supposing:
profession1: potionmaker.
profession2: greenpeace-berry-guy
so with an alt, i could have master-potions AND berries. without. only one thing. ok. if you want the game to be so. ok. let it be. then you have to trade with other players.
problem: inflation of prices. when 800 players are berry.guys and 200 are potionmaker, potions would become extremly high-priced. as well as: why giving an rival my extra strong berries? just to make money? nah...

See, I have three computers, and my little brothers are going to want to play with me, so this creates somewhat of a problem. What of people with routers and other computers?

Agreed.
I'm with these two. I don't think mules are necessary.
-
That seems acceptable, as long as my little bro can play >.<

Yeah, I never really felt a need for mules in any of the games I've played.
-
But the thing is even if you're not supposed to have more than one profession, people are going to want to try out different professions.
I also think that only allowing one account per IP is a bit unreasonable. Most people have a dynamic IP which changes every once in awhile. Also it isn't hard to get the IP to change whenever I want. I can just restart my modem and it gets a new IP from my ISP. Imagine if someone made a character with one IP, eventually it changed and someone else got it now they can't make an account. I realize that that may very well never happen but it's a possibility...
So in short by using IP to enforce this will not work out so well.
-
Exactly, because me and my little brother are going to want to play, and we are both on the same IP meaning both of us wouldn't be able to have our own accounts, therefore causing problems. ???
-
It's not an exploit in any kind of form. Unless it unbalances PU, im all for being able to create alts/mules.
-
Honestly as far as i've seen i dont really see a huge benefit from making a mule char, maybe should make it possible to not cross trade from one of your chars to another, but even if that was possible it surely cant be as productive as just traing/skilling/leveling a single character can it??
-
You can only login with 1 character at the time.
-
my wife and i often both try games together and have no interactions between our accounts even so far as not buying each others wares on a general in game marketplace.
So, wouldn't the simplest solution to be to put a block on interactions between characters off the same ip, but allow multiple accounts to access from the same ip at the same time?
this would
A) allow family members playing on the same ip at the same time and students at the same school (with the same ip) to be playing at the same time etc
B) prevent abuse by allowing ppl that have the capability playing 2 characters from 2 computers on the same ip from trading/battling to gain cheap xp~lvls etc between the two (or more) accounts.
*** (for us personnally having only 1 computer connected to the web only one of us would be connected at any one time, so it doesn't matter to us what direction regarding this is taken, but it might matter to those covered in my point A)

At first i thought this was a great idea, then i realized, people are just going to trade something to their friend, and then have it traded back to their other character, or find some other method to "cheat" the system.
I think it will be impossible to avoid these problems without limiting characters to one per account, but I don't like that choice either.
-
If people insist on making other accounts for the purposes of farming and/or monopolising the crafting market, we will just make it harder to reach decent crafting levels. My personal favourite is to link max craft level to actual player level, such that you can't cap your craft before you reach character level 40. Happy grinding ^^/
-
How about you need to hit a certain player level to trade?
That way you can't just get a starter, first pokemon center, trade. Delete. Remake. Repeat.
-
I doubt you can trade the original starter
-
No you can't trade your starter Pokémon. However it will be possible to obtain the other starters.
-
The only thing I would worry about with mules is that if the population of the game is increasing will the lag also?
-
The population will not increase. There's a cap of 1000 players on each server.
-
Oh alright excellent. :) That solves the problem.
