Title: What is your least favorite dungeon/area in any Pokemon game?
Post by: ChampionMic on January 11, 2011, 10:26:25 PM
It's a pretty random question, but for some reason I am curious as to what the answers will be. What is your least favorite area in a pokemon game?  ??? It can be a dungeon a route, a gym, a city... heck, it could be as specific as a certain patch of grass or whatever. It can be in any pokemon game at all. It's a pretty simple question. You can hate it for any reason at all. You can also list multiple hated areas if you want.

My least favorites are:
-Pokemon Mansion: So many encounters and such an annoying puzzle. And you have no idea how large of a tantrum I threw when I found out that the red carpet door at the near end of the dungeon sent me back to the beginning. Without repels, I wouldn't be able to keep my sanity.
-Whirl Islands: I had a pretty bad experience there when I forgot to bring Flash.  :'(
-Seafoam Islands: ANNOYING STUPID STRENGTH PUZZLES, and overall extremely tedious.  >:(

Note: I did a search, and I didn't find this post anywhere. If there is already a thread on this subject, please show me the link. Thank you.  :)

Nah, the most annoying one was in Goldenrod City, under the dept store with the switches in GSC. The switches didn't have colours then, whilst in HGSS, they are coloured so that you know which switch triggers which doors. But in GSC, you could spend hours trying combinations and once you pressed a couple of times different switches, there is practically no way to reset the switches (unless you noted down what you did in what order).

Then, less of a pain were Whirls Islands, Dark Cave and another dark cave where you get Tyrogue in GSC. The walls and paths seemed so much alike even with Flash on.

As from those, all the rest of the games were easy.

Personally Mt.Moon
If you started with bulbasaur/squirtle. You pretty much just kapowed Brock with one lvl 11 pokemon. With the constant encounters, and your low level team, this was absolute hell. Plus, I always got lost ¬_¬

Lol, I could go through Mt. Moon if it was a dark cave with flash required and without using flash, and at the same time get all the items, hidden or not XD

It's only a matter of time before he gets reported. Derp.

Anyway, the dark caves that you need flash for drove me crazy. Especially when I was playing it in the car.
At night.
On red version.
With no light.

two hours of hugging the wall, being bombarded with Zubats that have nothing better to do than poison my charmeleon.

I played so much as a kid, that I have most of the caves that needed Flash memorized...

But Mt. Moon was a pain when I chose Bulbasaur. Still, easily the most hated for me is the Safari Zone. How many Pokeballs can one Kangaskhan break free of? ¬_¬

PMD-wise... : Sky Tower, or Buried Relic, or any "Level-One" Areas.
Otherwise: Victory Road. Long dungeon is long.

Pretty much all the really big caves made me want to punch my gameboy in the face, although the caves where there were legendary pokemon lurking somewhere within them usually turned out to be pretty cool.

lol, catching safari pokemon was kind of easy. All you had to do was enter Safari zone, exit, walk down to the ocean, surf to the ice isles, then surf by the shore. Voila...

When I was like 7 and had blue version, I never knew where to get flash so going through that one cave next to cerulean city that lead to lavender town was a big pain in the neck, but eventually I memorized the route and it didnt matter whenever I started a new game. The cave that I really did hate throughout my pokemon playing years is probably the whirl islands in the original silver version. It took me forever to find lugia.Flash would have probably been helpful...

For me, Sky Tower was a good dungeon to level up the pokemon below level 50.
Otherwise, the 'Level-One" Areas were really a pain, especially where you can't bring any item or money... or friends and the dungeon would to up to a 100 levels.

Rock Tunnel is about 10 times worse then Mt. Moon.
The lesson here? GET THE EFFING FLASH.  >:(

Rock tunnel, not so much. But when I did it from GSC, the map of Rock's tunnel was nearly all different!

When I said "Sky Tower" I mean 1st time through.

After that, its easy.

More importantly, I was never a big fan of caves in general. I hate rock types, and, well...

My Favourite is any where with Fire pokemon, cause im a Water type trainer  ;D

But the worst is having to go through a cave with flash  :-[
I never teach it to anyone cause its a pointless move!

That is why the term HM slave was introduced. It's a pokemon with only HMs (which are usually not very desirable to have in the movesets of pokemon dedicated for battling)

IMHO, HMs should at least be Good, like Surf.

Why did they make Surf an all-target move?

~~~
EDIT: It wasn't... until Gen IV where Surf became all terrain target.
~~~

But yes, I think too that some HMs should be better than they are actually.

That said, places with too much trees to cut is tiring, especially when the 'talk and activate TM' feature was not yet implemented and you had to each time press Start, select pokemon, select cut and lastly confirm.

Again, I reinterate the point of....

Victory Road, long road is longer.
I understand a final challenge, but they make a 10 year old kid run through a 2.4 mile tunnel?
All the while, smashing rocks, climbing steep terrain, pushing heavy boulders, and guess what? In GSC, you were lucky enough to have your rival ambush you at the last pixel.

That damn mountain that Raquayza lives in. The crumbling rocks that you have to bike over are pretty annoying.

I agree. I always get HM slaves.
I hate it when you need to use so many HMs in a dungeon COUGHVICTORYROADCOUGH. Many times I have been forced to walk all the way back to the start of a dungeon because (a) I needed an HM to continue and (b) I had no Dig or Escape Rope.
Rock Smash has terrible base power.
Title: Re: What is your least favorite dungeon/area in any Pokemon game?
Post by: Frenchfry on February 01, 2011, 11:01:24 PM
Rock smash being weak is actually semi-realistic. The move is, quite literally, the smashing of a rock. And damage done to the opponent is just debris.

Also, I think the reason most HMs suck is because of the fact that you can reuse them. If cut had, say, 80-90 power, and you could teach it to EVERY pokemon you have, that would be broken.

But seriously, WHY do we need all these dark caves? Don't worry, I brought a flashlight. BECAUSE I EXPECTED DARKNESS WHEN I ENTERED THE CAVE.
Oh, wait. No flashlights. Lemme just hug the walls for eight hours.
