Title: Submit your building ideas! No pixel art skill required!
Post by: Alais on June 29, 2010, 11:31:03 AM
Building design!

Surprisingly, you don't need any pixel art skill to contribute to PU's building designs! Submit your concept for a type of building here, by sticking to a few simple rules. Designs can be as simple as you like, and can have colour or be outline drawings.

The tile size is 48x48 pixels. The grid you can see above is from Photoshop, but other free programs also have grids.

You have probably noticed that pokemon cities have one style of building per city, and this is what gives the city its feel so you remember it. The way you get many different buildings in the same style without much work, is to make sure the tiles for each one are reusable. Here are some simple examples:

(http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp147/Alaisx/House2large.png)         (http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp147/Alaisx/House2.png)

(http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp147/Alaisx/Basichouselarge.png)         (http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp147/Alaisx/Basichouse.png)

As you can see, every feature (wall and roof edges and corners, doors, windows etc.) occupies as few tiles as possible. The door is on one, the window is on two but makes good use of the extra space. The roof on the first house has corners that only take up one tile. You get the idea.

Another good idea is to keep all the parts simple. This doesn't mean you can't add lots of parts (flower pots, door signs, chimneys, aerials etc), it just means that each thing you add should be clean and simple looking.

Here is what it might look like if I was to take the first house and finish it for PU, although this is just a quick example using old stuff:

(http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp147/Alaisx/House2colouredlarge.png)          (http://i406.photobucket.com/albums/pp147/Alaisx/House2coloured.png)

You can take inspiration from pictures of real buildings on Google images, or from the official Pokemon games for some starting help.

Good luck!

I will be submitting one either today or tomorrow, depending on how long it takes me to scale this design I have up.

Well, this is the original design. It is quite literally 48x48 pixels. I am in the process of changing and scaling it up. I figured I would go ahead and submit the basic design though.

Sorry that the last picture of my design was so tiny. I remade it, with a few small tweaks here and there, but this time, I made it much larger. (It was much harder too!) I wasn't quite skilled enough to include the light fixture above the door, like in the previous tiny picture. Also, the building is supposed to be bricked, but again, paint is a low level program.

I was thinking more of a city-style building. Full of glass panels, tall, shiny and expensive looking. Could be used for a big city mall... I'll try and whip something up tomorrow.

Try a castle. When you enter it, you will either see the whole royalty thing or just a museum. Team Rocket is trying to rob it for the ancient artifacts and Giovanni wants the riches and jewels. You obviously need to stop them. That was just the short of it.

Cause thats never been seen before...Team (insert one of your choosing here) stealing from a museam, and you being the only one who can stop them.  Cause police fail.

Yes, but your banners aren't sprites being made from scratch.
I recommend Paint.NET, if you can't spend money for some reason.

Second version of my secret hideout:

Sorry I took such a long time to update this, I've been really busy with school :(.

I'm not sure if I like the bricks, but it felt too boring with just a flat color. The Team Rocket logo could be replaced with another organization's logo (as mine isn't really that good, and I didn't know if Team Rocket will be in the game or not).

Anyways, hope you can use this idea somewhere  in the game ;D

The windows, door, and roof could use some form of border or trim.

3rd version!!

I took your suggestions and bordered the windows, rounded the corners, added some shadows, and shaded the roof a little darker. Also made the roof look run-down, with broken and missing tiles (not sure if I like this a lot, but what do you think?)

I wasn't sure if I should continue posting here, or make a new thread under ideas/suggestions to submit it for consideration to be in the game. I'm sure this building still needs a good bit of work first before that, anyways. :)

yea, put them in ideas forum..

suggestions:
looks a lot better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Make glass more realistic
- Shadow on door and the closed up windows.
- something seems off to me :s... anyone can help me out ??

but overall good effort!
More practice and ull have some good stuff!

Thanks partyprash :D

What exactly do you mean by shadow on the door and windows? Just make the whole areas darker, or make the shadow extend down from the top farther?
Title: Re: Submit your building ideas! No pixel art skill required!
Post by: partyprash on March 16, 2011, 09:15:01 PM
remember, outlines on pixel art should never ever be black/that dark unless the building or whatever is dark grey, but then u should just use a darker grey O_o lol

windows and doors need shadow on the top as well as the left side pane..

just select that area and use burn tool if using photoshop..

Um... I can't distinguish the front and back grounds. The colours below the roof, IMO are too close. Add more grey in that yellow/light brown for the wall, while making the columns brighter, then add shadows that the columns cast on the steps and wall

Hmm, you're lacking details. That's all. :) There is no "3D" feeling, nor do the colours work. They are too weak. But a good try. :)

You wouldn't happen to know any handy tutorials to get that 3-d feel would you? also can you elaborate on the color situation? I'm not sure whether your saying their isnt enough contrast, shading, etc. etc. or you just don't like the colors (based on actual buildings in my native Massachusetts by the way)

3D is allready said.
The windows are nice and the plant-stuff is fun.
But you could make a bit more out of the roof and the door.

First, I changed the team rocket hideout a bit more, adding some rust and chips in the wall.

This is some sort of apartment building, where players could have rooms. Not quite sure how well that would work, but it could be just a regular building as well.

I'll be posting more on my deviantART here (http://kurtrank.deviantart.com/gallery/33740617) (I also have some other drawings and such)

I thought I was forgetting something......
A little over two years ago I asked if i could edit kiyoshi's building, and I probably still need more time.  :-[

^The edited version of kiyoshi's team rocket base that I never got around to posting.

Things i did to it:

1.) Changed the color of the bricks.
2.) Changed the keypad to a keycard slot.
3.) Made the window on the door lighter
4.) Removed some of the pipes on the roof
5.) Changed the roof to a checkered pattern
6.) The front window is now wooden boards instead of metal
7.) Removed the door handle (Not sure why i did this. I guess the door slides open when the keycard is used)
8.) Added more rust to the door

Things i probably should have done:
1.) Change all of the window frames color to match the bricks

P.S. Look closely at the building.

Well, I had made this recently with the program and tile-set mentioned here (http://www.pokemon-universe.com/index.php/topic,4908.0.html)

The top right is like the Pokecenter/Pokemart you would find before fighting the elite four in a normal Pokemon game.
Directly under it is the entrance to said Pokecenter/Pokemart.
The island with nothing on it but a sign is just an island with nothing on it but a sign at the moment.

(http://i1172.photobucket.com/albums/r566/eddiedelta8/Map_zpsa6dbbd7e.png) (http://s1172.photobucket.com/user/eddiedelta8/media/Map_zpsa6dbbd7e.png.html)

Oh, and yes. this is unfinished

I will edit this post later with a close-up view of the pokecenter/pokemart, if needed.

Just as a reminder, we won't have the elite 4 in PU, but we'll be having 'The Brutal Five' :)

Otherwise, keep up the good work!

Things I added since last time:
1.)2 more islands
2.)patches of sand from the middle island to the top left island (I really have to name these islands...)

The island/path/mountain/cave/etc at the bottom of the map is the exit from victory road.

The island in the top right is a dock for a ship that would take you somewhere you can only go to after you beat the brutal five (elite four)
