Title: Paperdoll Competition Results & First Trial Event
Post by: Bryan on June 04, 2012, 03:12:56 AM
Now is the voting part of the current trial event. Remember you'll be voting on creativeness, as well as, quality. Please take the time to look at the following entries and vote on your favorite entry. I ask all competitors to please not vote for yourself, but I can't stop you and hope you follow the rules. Your also only allowed one vote, so make it worth it. Now for the entries.

Lubbies - Ice Trainer

Genbor - Bug Trainer

Monzta - Grass Trainer

Good luck to all competitors, and let the best man win; and women. :)

It's finally time to announce the winners of the paperdoll competition. As well as, giving the first trial of the top three winners. Let me explain this first, before I move on to the winners that will be competing in this very competitive trial of events.

After the winners are announced, I will begin the first trial. There will be a total of three trial events. Each event will last one week. The first day I will announce the event each week the event takes place. These events could be anything, and they will all be different in some way. But they all will pertain to pixel art, paperdolling and the base sprite for Pokemon Universe.

After the event is announced, the players will have three days to create what task they are given for that trial event. This gives you the day the event is announced, which will be on Sunday. Til Wednesday to complete your art for the task.

Thursday will begin the day of voting. This will last til Sunday, on this day the polls will be locked and votes will be tallied and one person, with the least amount of votes, will be eliminated. In the case of a tie, I will decide who will move on based on the art. The remaining players will be moved on to the next trial event. Then this process will begin again, until there is one person.

Since there are three events, I will need the top four winners in the Paperdoll Competition, excluding Pokemon Universe's Staff. So now I announce the winners for the Paperdoll Competition. These are the top four, including staff.

4th Place - Genbor
3rd Place - Lubbies
2nd Place - Zatir

1st Place - Yukimenoko

Now for the four winners that will be in the Trial Events.

4th Place - Amphi
3rd Place - Monzta
2nd Place - Genbor

1st Place - Lubbies

The first trial event is as followed:

You will take the male base character sprite, and create a sprite for a trainer. What I mean by this is, you will pick a specific element and make a trainer based on this element. You may use any of the elements in Pokemon. (Grass, Rock, Dragon, ETC.) Be as creative as you want, and try to represent your element in your trainer. You may post your W.I.P. In this thread. Please use the male sprite in the first topic for this competition. Thanks.

After you read this, the competition has begun. Good luck to all.

Here you go Monzta.

Congratulations Lubbies, Amphi, Monzta and Genbor for winning the first round btw! Would have loved to compete against you guys.

Ps: if more pixel artists are needed even after these 4 awesome additions on the team. I often find myself with too much spare time on my hands. ;)

Actually, only one of the four will be selected after a series of elimination rounds. Though having more pixel artists would not be a bad thing.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't pixel art at moment the main thing that is delaying the development of the game? If so I'd say the more people working on it, the better.

yeah, but the purpose of this competition is to find a paperdoll artist. I'm not part of the pixel team, so I really don't have a say in how many they want to get on the team.

Right now we only have time for one paperdoll artist. What I mean by this is, I don't want to give Yuki two artist to train. There might be future events where will train an item artist, or other things. But at the moment we're focusing on tiles and paperdoll art.

Yes, it would be nice to have more artist. But at the same time many people here aren't that experienced. So we do with what we have. I'm actually becoming more active and getting quite a bit done.

As easy as it makes the Hood I won't reccomend it like that. Maybe if you show more of the face and make it a bit more around the face instead of covering it and make it look a bit more fluffy.

To be frank; so far it's quite plain, maybe you could spice things up a bit.

as for constructive criticism on what you have so far:
The hood is now exactly the shape of the head maybe you could make it a bit bigger so it looks more natural. I'd also open up the hood even more so you can see more of the face because it does look like kenny right now.

One more thing I would like to point out how many Eskimos that have their face fully covered like that could you actually see their ears poking out of the hoods? :P Just a small pointer.

I was gonna suggest that too, but it's possible to keep him bald. If you're going to do hair, find either Green's complimentary color, or something that looks nice with green, like orange.

Congrats to the winners! And what are you all progressing, the pixel art is awesome!

@Amphi, the hair is great, but I think the outfit is a bit standard. Maybe you can try something with darker volcanic rock-colours and make something like volcanic clothes with fire.

@Monzta, The idea and theming is really nice. Maybe you can add more detail to the clothing, some better texturing. The cap is great!

@Lubbies, The opening is way better now than before. I'm also curious about the side views!

Nice work yet for all of you!

Title: Re: Paperdoll Competition Results & First Trial Event

Well that eye patch is actually supposed to be an adjustable microscope, which you can wear on one eye, so you can see smaller bugs as well, etc.

i would think that a Normal type trainer would be wearing something that screams Pokemon, or is like Cosplay of a normal type Pokemon. i.e. a person wearing a Teddiursa inspired set of clothes. like bear ear headband, furry gloves etc.

Just my idea of Normal type
Title: Re: Paperdoll Competition Results & First Trial Event

Sure there's the whole poke fan thing but that's a bit unoriginal, plus putting it in a Teddiursa outfit does not always mean that that person will use normal but I see your point.
Title: Re: Paperdoll Competition Results & First Trial Event
Post by: genbor on June 05, 2012, 11:10:30 PM
I agree, a normal trainer is just too normal. I don't think any particular outfit would say "NORMAL TRAINER" in capital letters, since it just doesn't really have a specific trait.

Back on topic, I'm sad, no dark type trainer. The ice tyoe looks like an ice type with the color change, but brown would be a fun option, the grass type trainer reminds me of an eco-friendly robin hood, and why does the bug trainer have an eye patch?

I was going to say this too...Why no one made a dark type trainer? No ideas? Just make a black-dressed guy (this doesn't mean I'm racist) and something special for darkness at it, like in the animation to came out of the smog. I know it's hard but I would vote for it if it's better than Amphi's.

Really?

I see a huge difference between an eyepatch and a face mounted microscope. I see the microscope much closer related to Deadshots(DC) face mounted targeting device.

@CortexJ, I didn't make the Dark type trainer because I was already doing the bug type, but i'd love to try and make a Dark type one. Also, is he not allowed to have an "eyepatch"? Is that accessory banned for Bug Catchers?

Well seems like I'm out. It was fun anyways, and I didn't really think I'd even get this far. That alone is an achievement. It is more convenient to be honest, since my exams are still underway. Good luck to you guys Amphi, Lubbies, Monzta. Your paperdolls are great!

This topic will now be closed. The next trial event will start this Sunday. All competitors will be notified when the next one begins. I'm busy this week, sorry for the inconvenience.
