I apologize for th long wait. I've just been real busy. Enough apologizes, let's get this started.

With the previous round, one person has been eliminated.  It was a close call and only lost by one vote; but sorry, Genbor...you have been eliminated with 7 votes. I personally enjoyed your bug catcher paperdoll., good job Genbor!

Now on to the next challenge for our remaining competitors. Amphi, Lubbies, and Monzta here is your next challenge. Each competitor will be given a description of a random character. Your goal is to create a paperdoll the best you can with the description. I will post each description and the competitors name above it. You have til Saturday to have your entry in and polished. Here are the description and who will be doing what.

Amphi
Emo Kid
The emotional poet. These people love the colors black and purple, especially in a striped pattern. Their skin is usually pale, with some black eyeliner. Don't get them confused with a goth, as they stray away from tattoos and piercings. The hair is of no importance, as it can be in any style, base color black with dark colored highlights.

Monzta
King
Wannabe royalty, they wear a gold crown on their head, adorned with jewels. They take the royal look to such an extreme that they even wear the long cape with their purple or red clothes. Kings will usually have the kingly beard, well groomed and pointed in three directions, while the queen's face has a heavy amount of makeup. Royal scepters are not a big requirement, but can be set on the side, also gold with a few jewels. Make it as royal looking as possible.

Lubbies
Roman Cosplayer
This person loves Ancient Rome, and everything about it. They wear armor resembling the Trojans, which is gold with brown trim wear the leather is, and red for the brush on top. They tend to be on the muscular side, especially in the arm and chest areas. They wear symbols on their back, and since this is pokemon, what better than a pokeball symbol. To make themselves look tougher, they grow out their beards in a goatee kind of way.

Thanks to Cortex J. For the descriptions. Good luck to all, enjoy. Voting will start Sunday.

Guess my blond afro just wasn't that appealing to people. Anyways there was a secret in the bag: a radar! Just thought I'd share it since it's over anyways. Good luck Amphi, Lubbies and Monzta! I'll be curious of what you guys create from those descriptions.

I'll work on the leather trim later. The brush is a bit odd but I'll figure it out.

ummmm im not sure if it was a mistake or intentional, but when you were clarifying specifics on the roman paper doll, you used a greek example :) just thought it was a little funny

You might want to make it a darker yellow (bronze), right now he just reminds me of a guy dressing as a rooster :D.

You're talking about a greek or roman? This is how a greek looks like...

Not really, you see the Lorica squamata (Roman scale-mail armor) was made of either iron or bronze. Since he started it with yellow, I assumed he was going for the bronze version of it.

well I'm following instructions:

Roman Cosplayer
This person loves Ancient Rome, and everything about it. They wear armor resembling the Trojans, which is gold with brown trim wear the leather is, and red for the brush on top. They tend to be on the muscular side, especially in the arm and chest areas. They wear symbols on their back, and since this is pokemon, what better than a pokeball symbol. Don't know much about the greeks or the romans

My bad on the roman cosplayer, I was rushing to get the descriptions out. It can be called greek, but it really doesn't matter, I just wanted to see if anyone would make the brush on the helmet, seeing as hat wear can be challenging to make.

@lubbies, the outlines are great, but I don't really like the choice of the colours. They don't look roman in my opinion.

Either which way, still looks kinda like a guy in a chicken suit to me. Family Guy anyone?
Title: Re: Paperdoll Competition: Round 2
Post by: Pubbles on June 24, 2012, 02:18:48 AM
I think some sort of object in hand would help... A shield or a sword or spear... The one with the sash across his chest is definitely less chicken-y.

Is there any way to make the helmet less round? That, with the crest, is really making it look like a chicken suit, as MAC said.

Looking great Monzta, one thing though: the staff and the "mark" on the cape seem to be on the wrong side sometimes, not sure if it's intentional or not, but if it isn't you might want to fix it.
Title: Re: Paperdoll Competition: Round 2
Post by: Monzta on June 24, 2012, 01:04:22 PM
yeah, it's intentional. the staff is held in the right hand. the mistake was on the last back sprite, gotta fix that. also, that mark is supposed to be some kind of dent to show that the leg is putting pressure onto it.

Well thanks for giving me another chance, I found I am actually enjoying the pixel art business quite a bit, and wouldn't mind learning to do it properly. I took over the emo assignment and tried to shade it in a new way than how I did before. Hopefully it improved.

i think the emo idea its good... but the purple line in the head its a litle to much...  think its better only the purple on the hair that hides the eye....

It's pretty good. I like the side view especially the one on the right, the shading is really nice looking. I feel like I'm seeing a weird circle on the chest and back for the frontal and back view though.. A few minor things - the hair doesn't blend right between the black and purple parts(it's just too straight), the mascara looks a bit creepy in the frontal view(a single black outline), and.. it's too purple! Maybe make the pants a different darker color.. or.. add a black or light purple shirt but the sleeves will still have purple and black stripes cause I see "emo" people wear striped stockings and sleeves but never a full striped shirt.. and.. and.. a cute dark/ghost pokemon face on the back would be a nice touch me thinks. :D

Amphi sorry to hear that, you were great competition  ;D

I think it'll look better with some muscle lines like some pecs. You could even add a shoulder plate. Anyway, it looks good so far. I think he has a beard? but I can't really tell right away.

Yes, I know it's a little creepy, and honestly, many emos tend to dress and look creepy (not all of course) and since the colors are darker (black and purple) that sort of makes it a bit creepier. The striped shirt reminds me of a skeleton but I kind of like how it turned out. The stripe at the back is there because without it i felt it was too empty and plain, so I think i'll keep it there. I was also thinking of adding a logo to the back, but that was already mentioned for the Roman Cos-player. I might make one on the front though, just to see how it looks. Thanks for the advices I'll see what I can do about it.

I decided to remove the black outlines from the skin, and used lighter, more skin colored outlines trying to give off a better impression on being pale. If they make it worse I can re-edit them.

The eye placement on the frontal view is a little weird for me, it looks to high. Right now on an iPad so I'm hoping to get my laptop by today to finish off.
Title: Re: Paperdoll Competition: Round 2
Post by: genbor on June 29, 2012, 12:29:37 PM
Well what I did there, was remove one line from the eye (bottom one; eye = 3 lines) and replaced it with the "eyeliner", because when I used an eyeliner on the whole eye, it just looked like a big monocle.

ShedinjaEDIT: Here's the (hopefully) improved version. I modified some things that were pointed out to the best of my ability, and to my liking. I couldn't do a cute ghost/dark Pokémon's face due to spacial issues, but I made a PokéBand's logo (my own creation). Made it a bit more like a jacket with buttons because on it's own was a bit too plain for my taste.

woow that to seams preaty good Genbor!!... i think it really seems like a emo guy... it has all the style with it... The pokeband its pretty god and it really sees like a emo jaket

Also Monzta the king seems awesome!!! great job!!!... but it seems like the last image of the frontal view has the sceptre in the other hand... i dont know if it was the intencion but its the only of the images that has the sceptre on the left hand...

Erm, I don't know when he's gonna lock down the entry submission (I think it's posted, but I can't remember it right this second) and I also know it's late.

But just keep in mind that not all Kings have pointy crowns... There are several crown varieties that are curved, poofy and such... That are just as recognizable as a pointy crown!

Just wanted to toss that out there, since the rise and fall of the crests on the crown seem off a bit, I'd call them crenelations, but I don't know if that word applies to anything other than architecture!

But I very much like it, especially the imprint of the wait bearing leg when walking, in the cape. Most of the time you just see a slight curve up for a cape/mantle to intimate direction and dimension!

Okay one thing here:

The eyes. They're in the same position regardless of the direction the doll is facing. I feel like it would make more sense for it to not be like that. If it's intentional, whatever floats your boat I guess.

Emo kid could use some work on his clothing choice. And hair style too.

Kings face looks off. Might want to do something different there. The crown looks like a cake. No lie.

Spartan armor looks off. Need it more detailed.

Monzta - King

Lubbies - Roman Cosplayer
(http://p1cture.it/images/f8d7d96dee2752bbaca9.png)

Here is my thoughts on them I have a bad habit of always seeing positioning of stuff to be wrong.....it just bugs me....

Genbor- as you can see his design he kept them all the same way on the shirt and hair and such....Which I really like...

Monzta-Cane second column last design....The can is in the opossite hand.....4th column first design...it is either broke or the top is in the right hand and the bottom is in the left O.o

Lubbies- Second Column 3rd design.....the strap all of a sudden reverses O.o

Other than those little things I think they all look great :D

Nothing personal to the three talented entrants, but I'm abstaining from voting this round. Why? I find too many things I disagree with on each of the 3 entries. I'm not going to explain which ones/why so I don't look like some Troll.

I will admit I'm disappointed because the previous round's renditions were better. I also take into account:

Higher difficulty
Less possible creativity

At this time, I'll be a good little boy and shut up.

I found it very hard to vote this round.

There wasn't 1 of them that spiked my attention, there were various, each with their downs and ups.
I'm just gonna say this before you read on,you might feel offended, for i am very "mean" in the way i say things, but if you will read, please know you are to be congratulated for most would not even get this far.

I liked the idea of Genbors Emo Kid and had my mind set on voting on it.But it seems i have a different interpretation of emo than most people do,i was expecting a black coat dude with a matching sombrero style hat, with a manuscript in his hand.

Then there was Monzta's King, when i think of a king,i do not aim myself at the classic pumpy bearded men dressed in gold and red.
Infact,i got more towards the prince look, the knight in his galliant armor, with his shield that keeps hope living on and his sword that punishes all those dark. So,i could not bring myself to vote here.

And finally,Lubbies Roman, this was by far the one i liked the most, from his starting schemes i never looked at it as a "chicken" perspective, and kept seeing a roman in there. In my pokémon roman, the only thing that his drawing lacks is the classic spear in the hand, and a separation from the chestplate and the gloves/bracers.If he showed skin between the shoulder and the lower arm,he would have got my vote from the start.Lubbies got my vote on this one.

P.S:I was deeply sad when i heard Amphi was not gonna participate anymore.I loved his fire type trainer to the core.

I would say that you started the flame war by your post containing your 'thoughts' on the chars because I believe that Silver (and me as well) find that a lot of the things you 'thought' was totally off the focus of this poll.

You have the right to state your opinion, but the fact that you intentionally 'slapped them in the face' was uncalled for. Just saying

is like saying sorry for intentionally killing someone.

@ John Flame
The sprites don't really appeal to me either but any spriter can have it's ups and downs. If someone gives his/her reason for not voting I don't see harm into it. Pixelart is art after all and art will be critisized, liked and disliked. Some people can't really tell what's wrong with the sprites but want to share their thoughts anyway.  I usually give my reasons for not voting a certain art to make it have sense why I vote a certain piece of art.

I give an example:
I did't vote for lubbies because, first of all, the armor doesn't look metallic at all. I see not a single shine on the armor, and next to that the sprite seems very flat due lack of shading. On the other side he did a good job making the cape look properly attached to the armor. But sadly the torso-part of the armor looks more like some kind of shirt, than it looks like a piece of armor. Most romans had a breast plate and almost no plating on their arms.

This kind of explanation for voting can give the creator of the sprite an oppurturnity to improve his pixelart skills.

@ John Flame
The sprites don't really appeal to me either but any spriter can have it's ups and downs. If someone gives his/her reason for not voting I don't see harm into it. Pixelart is art after all and art will be critisized, liked and disliked. This, and the erased/deleted posts, are why I didn't want to explain myself when I said I was abstaining from voting. I just didn't want to look like I was an expert on something I know probably nothing about myself. Yuki here actually does know, so she can freely make points

Better to be quiet than to be a fool.

All entries are great. You gotta think, these guys just started to do pixel art. They're not gonna have the techniques to make pixel art like me and Yuki. Considering we've developed these skills and techniques through the years. I'm simply looking for someone that'll go out of the box, to create something original and still have the look of what it represents.

The techniques and skills will be tought during the training process. But it is good to see people with these traits already, but not required.

It is very true. Which is why it's not my place to give criticism for that which I cannot judge.

I've seen amazing work here on these dolls, I tried my hand awhile ago, and my attempt makes these dolls' flaws look like perfect jewels.

@lubbies You spent enough time on your paperdoll, for me it looks pretty much like it's going to defend untill death ;D It's looking great, very realistic.
