Favorite Books!
« on: September 14, 2010, 06:28:11 pm »
Alright... I've seen several topics on Music and Movies and Anime... So I have to ask..

What are your top five Books or Book Series. Include Authors, so others can possibly take your recommendation and go read it/them.

For me, I enjoy Fantasy for the most part, as is obvious below.

1) Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan (and Brandon Sanderson since Jordan's death)
2) Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson (and Ian Esslemont and a very close second)
3) The Night Angel Trilogy by Brent Weeks
4) Elantris by Brandon Sanderson (Warbreaker and Mistborn were good too.)
5) Codex Alera by Jim Butcher (not epic writing, but great stories and ideas)

I personally think that Wheel of Time completely blows Lord of the Rings out of orbit when it comes to pure story, writing style, ideas, and possibilities... I never liked the whole "elves and goblins and dwarves, (oh my!)" thing... I bless Robert Jordan's soul for being original and not ripping off of LOTR.

As for the Malazan Books... dear gods above... Some of the most intriguing and enrapting stories ever. Even if somewhat hard to get into at the start.

That's it for me... What about you?

This... although being a poor teenager does have it's down points and I've only just been able to buy the third book.
2) 'Gone' series by Michael Grant
3) 'Courtney' series by Wilbur Smith
4) Discworld novels by Terry Pratchet
5) Cherub series by Robert Muchamore

Oh, and I disagree with your opinion on LOTR Pubbs :P

Ooh! Wizards of EarthSea! That was a good movie :)

Well, as for books, I haven't been exposed to many :( I don't have many books at home. Most of them come from libraries.
I read some dozen of the Agatha Christie books of Hercule Poirot...
I have a book 'Unmerited Favor' by Joseph Prince that I haven't touched yet because of all my homework...
I read 'Deception Point'...

Sorry, I can't think of anything else right now :-[
No one can go back and change a bad beginning; but anyone can start now and create a successful ending.
If a problem can be solved, no need to worry about it. If it cannot be solved what is the use of worrying?

Currently playing Pokemon XY/ORAS/Shuffle and Clash of Clans and testing out PokemonRevolutionOnline and Dragonmon Hunter....
Also, forum notification emails are not getting in my inbox... again...

Approved.

Mine in no order:

I can't say I'm the biggest book fan. So I'm sorry for such a short list.

1. Survivor - Chuck Palahniuk
2. Slaughterhouse Five - Kurt Vonnegut
3. Long Walk to Freedom - Nelson Mandela (his autobiography)
4. Choke - Chuck Palahniuk (favorite author. He is also responsible for Fight Club)

Oh!

And I've been cheating... I've listened to the Audio Books (so sue me, I don't have the time for books right now!) for Jim Butcher's Dresden files...

I love them... They're not really Fantasy, or Sci-fi, or Mystery, or Detective... But Kind of a mix of them all - if you have never given them a chance, try it... The language is a bit rough (modern cussing is included a bit) but it doesn't detract from the story at all.

PS: The fun SyFy Channel show was good, but nothing as good as the books.

Definitely a great book. I would have added it, but I felt 3 books by the same author might be a little ridiculous. If you like Fight Club and haven't read Choke or Survivor, you should really do so. They are all written in a similar fashion with similar types of characters (people who are demented or have deeply rooted problems that put them in compromising situations). Survivor is about a cult survivor. All the cult members were programmed to commit suicide when the "time" came. He and few others were saved and it's his story from then on out. Choke is about a guy with a sex addiction who goes to sex addictions meetings to meet girls and will purposely choke in restaurants to get some action/attention.

I like reading shonen jump or other manga related books, but i also like books with a good story line with precise details to give me basic information about what is happening at the moment. One of my favorite books that ive read was when i was in 4th grade. I doubt anyone hear has heard about it but its a book called Because of Romek. Its a really good story and the time period is during the holocaust. I would say thats one of my favorite books.

I just finished three books by Michael A. Stackpole... I forget the "____ Trilogy" name for them, but book one is called A Secret Atlas. I was pleasantly surprised.

It's not what I normally would've selected on my own, but he puts out a decent Podcast (free) about writing Fiction, and as a listener I decided to check out some of his work, and I was glad to see he actually uses most of the tips and ideas he gives in it.

Anyhow, You may want to give it a go. It's got a heavy Japanese influence (not entirely certain how correct he is with details and so forth, but it's obvious to anybody who knows much of anything about Samurai and their history.

1. The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is by far the best novel I have ever read. Although, the sequel just came out, so I might have to revise that statement soon.
2. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
3. The Discworld Novels by Sir Terry Pratchett
4. The Redemption of Althalus by David and Leigh Eddings
5. Seven Ancient Wonders by Matthew Reilly
