I remember writing a fan fic (started out as a pokemon RPG that died) and I had my character live in the Forest that was just south west of Celadon City just to the right of route 16.

I went by this map

for me, probably Cyndaquil, mostly because I think it is really cute and I love pokemon, too bad I cannot stay with an Eevee though because Flareon is my favorite pokemon of all
