Movement controls.
« on: April 23, 2011, 10:26:28 AM »
I was just wondering about the keys used to move the character.
Are you guys going to be using the arrow keys or the AWSD keys?

In my opinion the AWSD keys are far easier in that, to my knowledge, the majority of people are right handed, meaning they will be using their mouse with their right hand.
Many left handed people have been trained to use their right hand for mouse control as (from my experience) most school, library and workspace computers feature a computer mouse with button specifications for right-handed users.

Why not both? Or just give users access to a key mapper that let's you set up the keys a you wish. Most MMO's do that anyway.

That would be ideal, haha.

For the record I am left handed and use the mouse in my left hand, I have no trouble with using WASD or the arrow keys. Perhaps I am in a minority and other people do have problems, but I don't see how what hand you use to move the mouse impacts on keyboard movement.

Well, as a right handed person using the mouse with my right hand, it is unnecessarily awkward (for me at least) reaching across the keyboard with my left hand to use the arrow keys when the AWSD keys are right there on the left, where my left hand is.

I think Raikt had it right and it would be ideal if perhaps we could choose to change the keys in a key mapper of sorts, if need be.

I don't see the mouse use as much of an issue really, as you won't be needing to use both at once. The mouse is mainly used for navigating menus, something most players won't be doing whilest moving.

Okay, well I was only trying to bring up an issue that some people might have, as I know for myself it is a pain to use only one hand for everything (or reach across the keyboard).
I just find it easier to keep both hands in their respective sectors, left and right, and to use them equally during gameplay (rather than right hand for mouse, take hand off the mouse, right hand using keys, stop moving, right hand on mouse again).

As I said, I see no reason why a key mapper can't be included for left handed users or anyone with a disability. (I personally know someone who plays WoW with only one hand, as that's all he has.)

At first, it may only be WASD controls with the mouse or the arrow keys, however.

I agree on the key-mapper idea.
I might be right-handed, but for some reason I like to use the arrow keys more than the WASD. Even if I have to hold the mouse and the arrow key...

But for as far as I know, most people use the WASD rather dan the arrow keys when they need to control both the mouse and the keyboard. As for left handed It would be handy if for them the arrow key is available. ;)

I think being able to choose your own keys would be best, cause i use WASD, but some people i know use Arrows and the arrows with numbers on them.

Yes I also cast my vote with customizable key mapping. But anyways, I never really used the mouse to navigate through anything in Pokémon, (when I played on PC)  since I could easily do that with the same buttons as the movement controls: whichever they may be.

Playing world of warcraft is hard with one hand, tell the person you know that he is a strong willed person, and is very creative.

I think there should be a possibility to control the game with keyboard only.

You should be able to do that so don't worry about it. :)
